2 2 SEPTEMBER 2011 Commodore s Corner The Bob Levin Leukemia Cup is coming The Bob Levin Leukemia Cup is coming.!.! THE BOB LEVIN LEUKEMIA CUP IS COMING!!!! Yeah, that event that usually takes place in the spring is now happening in about three and a half weeks. If you haven t already planned to be there do it NOW! See the CSA website for all the details. The place (aka CSA) is finally starting to look like is old normal self again, by the time the Open House and Luau happen a few weeks ago we had the majority of the boats out of the car parking lot and some cats moved back onto the cat field. If your boat has not found its rightful home at this time, please work to get it parked where it belongs. A BIG THANK YOU goes out to all you who came out and assisted with the Open House, although the wind went missing mid day, all those that came to visit had a great time and that s because of the AWESOME volunteers who took them for rides on their boats. Events like this are the future of our club, so if you didn t get a chance to take someone for a ride this year plan to do it next year. Immediately following the Open House the real first party of the season happened in the Luau, yeah, hard to believe the first real party was the middle of August however, it s been one of those years and now the momentum is growing Did I mention the Bob Levin Leukemia Cup is coming??!!!!! That should be the party of the season since a lot of the fleets have had to reschedule their regattas due to that silly flooding. So like I said you need to be at the Bob Levin Leukemia Cup. A special thanks goes out to Jeanette Beier & Shirley Bild for organizing the Open House and Luau! THANKS!! Another event that has gone off without a hitch, although also delayed by the silly flooding, was the Adult Sail Seminar, 28 students enjoyed the best week of weather at the club thus far. Again, thanks needs to go out to the volunteer instructors who made this event as great as it was! A special shout out to organizer Dave Leimbach. LATE BREAKING NEWS!!! Due to the silly flooding and the lack of WOW (Women on Water) events this season the originally scheduled 2 day Strawberry Women s Regatta is being cancelled. It will be replaced by an all day WOW event on Saturday September 10, more details to come from organizer Linda Ditzler via the CSA list serve watch your s. Hopes are for the 2012 Strawberry Women s Regatta to go to a 2 day event as originally planned before all the crazy excessive water events of this year. 3 Splinters from the Board SEPTEMBER We are busy talking to and interviewing potential candidates for next season s Vice Commodore position. This is a 2 year volunteer position ending with the final year as holding the esteem position of Commodore of CSA. In closing the books on the 2011 Adult Sail Seminar, Director Leimbach reported 27 students with some already being new CSA members and/or boat owners. Thank you to all the volunteers that helped run and teach this very successful program. Following adult camp, there was interest from some attendees to purchase a Snipe or two from our club owned supply. We discussed the merit of this option and opted to table this discussion until Director Beier, the Board s liaison the the Jr. Foundation, discusses this topic with the CYSS Board. We have been extremely lucky over the years always having and even finding when lost, our powerboat keys. With changing volunteers potentially each year, we re making a big effort to make sure duplicates are in Mary s office should one decide to grow legs and walk. The busted water pipe break and bubbling up leak at the water spicket at the bottom of the car parking area has been dug up, found and repaired. We learned a new shut off valve was put in place that should hopefully last us another 40 years. The board is engaged in determining and finalizing our capital project for With the flood and additional funds spent on the lovely extra water, this makes for a more difficult situation going into next season. The fixe em up projects underway include painting the harbormaster s house, repairing the facades on the pavilion, Glenn Grummon s great work on repairing the whaler canopies plus we re getting parts replaced on our 2-ton hoist. By the time you re reading this, all boats should be off the car parking lot. If they re not, I can state we re going to move them for you, and where they ll be, only Mary will know. In closing, continue to get the cob webs off your boats and come have some great fun at this year s Whale/Leukemia Cup Regatta. Get your registration forms in today (there in this Marks and on CSA s website) and your boat name will be on the cool regatta shirts. There are special packages for you to donate a little more and get great merchandise from this year, and previous years events. Please register early so we can have a number on lunch and dinner needs with our caterers. This year s regatta is named after Bob Levin, one of CSA s founding fathers who past away in the last year from Leukemia. Come join his family regatta weekend celebrating his life, those that have lost in the past, and the positive energy we ll be putting out there as we all work at helping to find cures for these dreadful diseases. Thank you, Rick Bernstein Chairman of the Board Carlyle Sailing Association Race committee photo by J. Beier

6 6 SEPTEMBER 2011 Cat Tales by Dave Waugh COMING SOON... Muddy Waters and the Great Lakes Area A-Cat Championships Our Muddy Waters regatta this year is being run in conjunction with the Great Lakes Area A-Cat Championships. Joe Leonard is expecting as many as 15 A-Cats to show up. We are also expecting several F-16 s, F-17 s, F-18 s and N-20 s in addition to H-18 s, H-17 s and H-16 s. So mark your calendar for Sept. 30 thru October 1-2. Our fearless leader, Jim Disano, promises warmer weather than last year and equal winds. You do not have to be a hot shot sailor to participate. Just come out and join the fun. And now for something completely different l to r back row: Caleb, Dave, Joe, Mary, Joe, Jim, Tom. front row: Pat, Latham, Sue, Jim, Mary, Shirley Photo by Ashley Over the past few years I have spoken to several people who have just started to sail. Many have had a story of how they forgot to do something simple before they shoved off for a day of sailing. Many were so embarrassed they were thing of not come back. Well, let me tell you if you are a new sailor and this has happened to you are not alone. Everyone does forget something at one time or another. No matter what you do someone else (usually a very experienced person) had all ready done it. So far this year we have had experienced people, who shall remain nameless, who have: Not gotten the halyard locked and their sail came down before getting out of the harbor Forgot the plug in one hull Forgot the plug in both hulls Rudder cams in the wrong position and could not lock the rudder down And my favorite, forgot, not one but both dagger boards. Over the past several years I have done all of these... Well, not the one with the dagger boards. In addition I have rigged a spinnaker upside down. Now that one looked really weird. So in conclusion, no matter what you do you not alone. It has already been done. You are not the first and you will not be the last. So just forget about it and continue on and have fun. 7 Adult Sailing Seminar by Betty Struckhoff SEPTEMBER Adult Sailing Seminar Creates New Sailors A physics teacher, a retired dentist, a former police chief, a lawyer, an employee of Ameren, a professional gardener where would a group like this come together for three days to learn and develop a new skill? Nowhere but CSA s Adult Sailing Seminar. The wonderful diversity of the students (and instructors) is just part of what makes CSA s Adult Sailing Seminar, fondly known as ASS, such a special three days on the water. This year the weather gods smiled on us. August 10, 11 and 12 brought temperatures in the 80 s with breezes steadily building through the three days of learning, while never growing too stiff for the beginners. Instruction included classroom time, lots of time on the water, rigging and de-rigging boats and video coaching sessions in the CSA Theater. Thanks to Rick Bernstein s expertise, on-the-water video was ready for viewing each day. While watching the video together, Rick and others coached the students and even some instructors. What s that saying if you really want to learn something you should teach it? Each student will receive a copy of the on-thewater video from the class. The most frequent comment from students? Along the lines of there is such a breadth and depth of sailing experience in this club. Who knew?! Putting on this event takes a tremendous amount of time and effort. Kudos to Dave Leimbach for organizing, which included rescheduling some 30 students and 20 volunteers following the flood. Besides the volunteers, boat owners who couldn t spend three days in class lent their boats for use by other skippers. The class was taught in Flying Scots, San Juans and Catamarans. In addition, a Snipe was used for capsize drills in the harbor. A special thank you goes to Mary Bartman for keeping us well nourished and hydrated throughout the day, in between clearing dried mud from the parking lot! Next time you see any of these folks at the lake, you might say thanks for helping to promote our club in such a positive and educational way: Skipper Instructors Other Volunteers Boat Lenders Bill Clark Mike Sullivan Jim Harris Emilio Tellini Evan Ringle John Folwell Jim Coleman Lathum Souther Dave Waugh Sebastian Bautz Howard Harris Junus DaRugna Mary Bartman Greg Franklin Jack Firse Rick Bernstein Kay Ward Betty Struckhoff Bill Dummit Joel McKell Steve Kemper Cal Guthrie Jim Mencin Peter Infanger Ford Miller Adam Sampson Bryan Gill

10 10 SEPTEMBER 2011 Edward Killeen, SF Sailing Examiner February 8, 2009 Sailors take themselves pretty seriously. The more pretentious out there call it yachting ; some even wear yachting gear when not on the boat. In short, as a subculture, sailors are ripe to be made fun of. But you have to pick your moments, you need to know when they re doing something that even their own compatriots will laugh at. Here s a short list. When to make fun of a sailor: 1When they re baylining. This is the condition that many find their boats in when they re lazy; they left the dock with their fenders still dangling overboard. If you see this, the appropriate reaction is to point and laugh. I sometimes take pictures. 2When the crew is wearing matching foul weather gear. This is OK if you re competing for the America s Cup. It s ridiculous if you re out for an afternoon sail. The appropriate response is to beat them in the race and then ask them at the party afterwards where they got their cool gear. 3When sailors talk about how fast they re going. This is absurd. Really, really fast boats go about 20 MPH. Race boats go around 8 to 10 MPH. My boat goes around 5 to 6 MPH. Let s compare...humans walk around 3 MPH and jog at about 7 MPH. So race boats are a bit above a jog. World class marathon runners average around 10 MPH, Usain Bolt runs at about 23 MPH. Are sailboats really fast? Proper reaction is to walk away and ask, hey, can your boat keep up with me? 4Topsiders. What can you say about topsiders? Maybe in the early days of yachting, a leather shoe with oddly placed laces and weird ridges was considered high tech. But do yachties really have to wear them off the boat? I don t know the appropriate reaction...like most everyone my age, I wore them in high school so perhaps just look down in mutual shame? 5Nomenclature. This one is probably the most important. Sailors talk funny with all that starboard and tiller and boom and other odd terms. At one point there must have been a reason for sailors to have their own language; most likely because a ship could have sailors from many different countries and cultures. But is there really a reason to exclude the common man from conversation? Why ask someone to trim the afterguy when pull the blue rope will suffice? Why use terms like galley and head when kitchen and bathroom are far more understandable? The appropriate reaction is, obviously, a blank stare, or ask them to repeat themselves in whatever foreign language you know. 6 Now for the last rule, don t make fun of sailors, they might give you a ride ( Then you can wear a cool yellow outfit with topsiders while talking funny about how fast you went with your fenders dangling. Just like real sailors. Wheeee! This article is available at
