After several months of meetings, the committee presented its recommendations to the Board of Directors. The Board implemented the recommendations. I am very proud to present our exciting new programs: 1. Boat Rental Program. The CSA has acquired a Hobie Wave, a 15- foot catamaran, for the purpose of staring a rental program. The Wave can be rented by qualified skippers for half or full days (i.e., 9:00am to 5:00pm) on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The boat is also available Monday through Thursday by appointment. Reservations are encouraged, but not required. Rental rates are $100 for a half day, $180 for a full day, and $300 for an entire weekend. Primary members get significant discounts. Please see the rental agreement located on the CSA website for more information. In the future we would like to acquire additional sailboats or other non-motorized watercraft (e.g, kayak, paddle boat, rowboat, etc.). If you have a boat that you would like to donate, please contact me. 2. New Membership Category. In addition, the CSA now offers an Associate Membership ( AM ). Like the Friend Membership, the AM is designed for non-sailboat owners. However, unlike a Friend Member, an AM includes the following exciting privileges: I look forward to introducing Henry Theodore Preston to the sport of sailing, even though he probably will not get much time at the tiller for the foreseeable future. a. Associate Racing Program. Though AMs cannot keep a sailboat at the CSA, AMs can participate in the CSA racing program. They can either launch from the CSA (upon payment

J u l y 1, CSA MARKS OF THE COURSE of the daily usage fee) or launch elsewhere and meet the fleet on the racecourse. This offering replaces the old Racing Associate Membership. b. Boat Rental Program. AM s receive discounted rates for the boat rental program described above. c. Watercraft storage program. AM s are entitled to keep one non-motorized watercraft other than a sailboat (e.g., kayak, wind surfer, kite board, standup paddle board, etc.) at the CSA. Additional watercraft can be stored upon the payment of a modest fee. We hope that this program will attract a new breed of water enthusiasts to the CSA. AM s also get full use of the facilities. The cost of a AM is $150 per year. 3. Special Membership Designations. Finally, in order to raise funds and recognize our dedicated volunteers, the CSA is introducing three new membership designations: a. Crew Benefactor. Any member may earn this designation by making a donation to the CSA in the amount of $400. All crew benefactors will receive (i) recognition in the membership roster, the Marks-of-the-Course, and elsewhere; and (ii) two tickets to the Luau, the Whale-of-a-Sail dinner, and the Commodore s Banquet. b. Skipper Benefactor. Any Corporate may earn this designation by making a donation to the CSA in the amount of $800. All skipper benefactors will receive (i) recognition in the membership roster, the Marks-of-the-Course, and elsewhere; (ii) two (2) tickets to the Luau, the Whale-of-a-Sail dinner, and the Commodore s Banquet; and (3) a collectible gift to be selected by the Board of Directors. c. Sustaining Volunteer. Primary Corporate Members may earn this designation by earning 40 or more hours of Work Hours (including the Work Party Assessment). All skipper benefactors will receive recognition in the membership roster, the Marks-of-the-Course, and elsewhere in the discretion of the Board of Directors. The specific terms of the foregoing programs are set forth in the updated membership handbook, which is available on the CSA s website. There will be further discussion concerning the updated Handbook in next month s commodore s letter. In the meantime, if you have any ideas for recruiting new members or otherwise improving the CSA, please let me know. Yours with great respect and esteem, Robb Preston, Commodore *** d.!! 2

j u l y 1, CSA MARKS OF THE COURSE Splinters from the board Juneʼs Board of Directors Meeting took place in the middle of an incredible month at CSA. Already completed were the Adult Sail Seminar and Jr Sail Camp. About the start were the Flying Scott North Americans followed by the Open House (details of each of these in this Marks) 1. Director Leimbach, whoʼs the Director of our Adult Sail Seminar reported the just completed class was the largest ever. The price for this yearʼs seminar was raised and the results proved a very important item; the level of students this year were more focused and serious. As a follow up to this, we had a jump in Friend Memberships and one student before the class ended had a new boat and was discussing how to start his membership at CSA. Also, the board discussed adding a 2 day pilot racing seminar as follow up to the seminar. 2. Also just completed at our board meeting was Jr. Camp. Director Beier reported thirty kids attended this year and the kids staying on our property in the evening proved to be a big success. 3. More of the the whaler boards, or those wood protective coverings on the walkway on the seaway have been installed in time for the Flying Scot Nationals. 4. All the picnic tables at CSA have been freshly stained 5. The Commodore reported we had 5 new members since the last board meeting and there are 2 cabin spots open. 6. Director Bartman has been working with a company analyzing the lightning strikes weʼve received this year. Early reports suggest we may have a ground issue with the power on some parts of our property. We are evaluating bids to determine what the best course of action is to improve this situation. 7. The new boat rental program is ready to launch. As we organize and develop this further, weʼre learning about the intricacies of running such a venture, specifically how the State of Illinois wants us to operate. We have purchased a Hobie Wave and weʼre waiting for the licensing of this boat to be finalized. Weʼre looking at adding a San Juan 21 and a another boat to this fleet. At press time Commodore Preston is finalizing the contracts and weʼll be getting them ready to put on our website. 8. We formed a sub-committee to investigate members with multiple boats. Director Leimbach is chairing this with Directorʼs Pitzer and Clark assisting. 9. CSA is looking for a member in the insurance business to help advise the board. If interested please contact me at rick@aboveandbeyond.tv. Thank you Jack Klug for your yearʼs of service. To every CSA member who volunteered and help, assisted, lent a hand, advised, gave a suggestion or opinion in order to help any of our June events, thank you. June was truly a great month at CSA. 4 j u l y 1, CSA MARKS OF THE COURSE Flying Scot North American Championships Bagpipes and Scots Have you ever been to a National Regatta? It was my first. From June the CSA Flying Scots hosted the North American Championships. During this event championships were decided for women, juniors, seniors, champions and challengers. Ten races were held under the direction of CSA's fine PRO Ted Beier and his team; Jeannette Beier, Sandy Pinkel, Tom Pinkel, John Woodworth, Cliff Flath and Gerald Donaldson. They did a masterful job of getting all of the necessary races in as the temperature climbed to 106 on Thursday. Wind conditions were excellent throughout the week and we suffered no drifters during a race. Flying Scot sailors came from all over the country to compete. Sixty-three boats registered and several rolled in at the last minute. Texas, Louisianan, Virginia, Florida, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan,Massachusetts, Iowa, North Carolina, Kentucky and Maryland were a few of the states represented. As in any class the top sailors came to fight it out for trophies and recognition. The Flying Scot class has strict specifications regarding any "go fast" changes to a boat. Long time measurer Bob Neff (who sailed at CSA in the early 80's) and the measuring team are very careful about each boat adhering to the original design. Although the one design class rules call for a level playing field the variety of different rigs and personal preferences demonstrated that the top dogs had fine tuned things to a degree that I did not know existed. Many boats revealed the great lengths taken to fare, smooth and polish the hull and centerboard to a fine gloss. Sanding is out. Teflon glass like finishes are in. Even tillers were modified to shed weight. Of course there were the those who raced in the challenger division for whom a clean boat was good enough. You can't polish everything!! Monday the serious qualifying races started. Two races were held (and one more on Tuesday) to determine who would be in the Championship division or Challenger division with the entrants split equally among the two. As the races began we were greeted by a young man about 15 who was a bagpipe player dressed in the traditional Scottish kilt. This was a tip of the hat that our Regatta Chairman Jim Harris gave to the Scottish origins of our designer Sandy Douglas. As the wind blew over 15mph and with gusts a few competitors stayed in while at least 50 went at it. It was a real test of endurance just to hold the boat down but during 2 races, each with two starts, the competitors managed to stay upright except for one boat that turtled and bent its mast. That left him in the challenger division. It was rough out there!! As the week progressed five more races were held to determine the winners in the Championship and Challenger Divisions. Trophy's were presented Thursday evening during a hog roast dinner. The regatta was originally scheduled to go through Friday but with the advancing heat the race committee successfully completed all races by Thursday evening. Everyone was anxious to get on the road and beat the heat. So what are the benefits of being in a national regatta? First you realize how serious some are about their racing. Nothing is left to chance and every variable that can be eliminated in the boat or equipment is methodically replaced, rebuilt or improved one way or another. The key common denominator among the pros seemed to be the hull finish and the centerboard finish, both of which were polished with special compounds to a!! 4

j u l y 1, CSA MARKS OF THE COURSE Cont, high gloss. Bottoms were fared out with sandpaper and filled in until there were absolutely no undulations of any size. Those boats were so slick you could shave in the reflections. Second, you learn on the race course how to follow. the leaders who can read the wind like nobody's business. When I was flopping along others were smoothly gliding by having built up speed as their apparent wind increased. It's also great to see your boat builder, Harry Carpenter, help out our newest fleet member Thomas Kraft with advice and assistance in making adjustments to his new Scot. Finally, you meet great people and create new friendships that carry over into other regattas and maybe lifetimes. One of the great stories came out of John Folwell's unlimited kindness when he helped a couple who needed boat repair. After John refused their offer of monetary compensation they made a $75 donation to our junior sailing program! Congratulations to Fleet 83 and all of its members who volunteered. Jim Harris our Regatta chair and right hand Betty Struckhoff deserve kudos for long hours of planning and hard work. The Fleet 83 list includes Bill and Lori Kesler (incredible work on the web and registration), Mike and Joe Ann Sullivan (wheel chocks for all and trophies + bookkeeping!), Marilyn and Dan Murphy (mast sleeves and all around support at the brat BBQ), Felicia Bamer (scoring input), Len Sisul (measuring and general man on hand) Mike and Patricia Hellweg ( a lot of everything all week long!) Al and Pat Redszus(measuring, bow numbers and good cheer), Bill Clark (head of the measuring effort) Thomas Kraft ( who did whatever he was asked), Tom Baker and Rick Guffey (the beer truck maestros), Bill Dummitt and Emilio Tellini (measuring and supporting the beer truck), Sue Tellini, (fleet nurse and helper), Bill Fogarty (best crew and supporting guy to all and fleet doctor), Shirley and Brian Bild (registration) and Rob Preston (sailing instructions). Dan & Tobi Moriarty, Terry Burke, and our new skipper Thomas Kraft. If I left anyone one out my humble apology. Special thanks to our outside volunteers; John Folwell who handled the scoring under pressure and Norma Hall who, without prior experience, took on the food chair job when our loyal Dolores Swan broke her ankle (thanks Dolores for the preliminary work and your advice to Norma). Ted Beier and his crew also made a huge difference. His judgment and ability to get the races started and on time as well as good course layouts made it a challenging Regatta. Mary Bartman was also great, handling all site issues promptly and decisively. Rick Bernstein (photo man), and photos by Sandy Pinkel, Mike Hellweg and Kay Ward were shared on CSA's Face book page and our Regatta web album. See So, if you get a chance to compete nationally don't be intimidated because there is too much to learn just by being there. You have nothing to loose. CSA should be proud. 6 j u l y 1, CSA MARKS OF THE COURSE A Record Open House In addition to experiencing record heat, the 2012 CSA Open House experienced record attendance also. About 260 visitors turned out for the event, which we think is an attendance record for this annual event. The majority were from the Southwest Illinois area rather than Metropolitan St. Louis, which is probably a result of the better coverage we get from the Illinois newspapers. After registration, our visitors were taken on a tour of the property to show them the observation building, showers, and pavilion. Then it was on to the boat parking lot to see the various types of boats on their trailers before having rides on them. Rides were available on several cats, two E Scows, a Flying Scot, two Lightnings, an MC Scow, a Melges 24, a Precision 15, a San Juan 21, a Y Flyer, and four cabin boats. The cabin boats seemed popular among many, and we could have used several more, which would help grow that fleet. Despite the light and spotty winds, the visitors each got several rides if they so wished. St. Louis Boat and Paddle attended again to demonstrate various types of kayaks and paddle boards. A number of visitor and CSA kids quickly turned the paddle boards into swim toys. The Open House Committee wishes to think all of the CSA volunteers who worked as registrars, tour guides, dock captains, and sailboat ride givers. In particular they would like to especially thank those boat owners who stuck it out in the hot conditions to the very end.!! 6

j u l y 1, CSA MARKS OF THE COURSE Adult Sailing Seminar 2012 Update This year s event is over and on the record books as the largest and most successful class ever. We had thirty six students and twenty eight people who helped to put on the event. Some who used their own boats and some people who lent us boats. Now imagine that for a minute, lending your boat to people, some of whom have never sailed before. Now I will point out that we had an experienced instructor on each boat, but it is still a great favor of individuals to lend us boats for this class. I would like to thank everyone who helped and those who lent, or used, their own boats. They are listed below: Mary Bartman, Greg Franklin, Shara Taylor, Russ Ammons, Dave Waugh, Jack Firse, Barb Mencin, Bill Clark & boat, Mike Sullivan & boat, Emilio Tellini & boat, Mike Pitzer & boat, Tom Pinkel on Len Sisul's FS, Michael Max on Tom Baker's FS, John Folwell on Jim Harris's FS, Joe Bartman on Jack Firse's SJ, Jeff Melly on Cal Guthrie's boat SJ, David Crosby on Peter Infanger's boat, Jim Mencin & boat, Sebastian Bautz on Tom McLaughin's SJ, Howard Harris & boat, Denny Taylor on Steve Kemper's boat, Cal Guthre & boat, Ted Beier on Bill Coulson's boat, Jim Disano on Dave Leimbach's boat, Brock Tufli & boat, Rick Bernstein, Kay Ward The class gets better every year and it fills earlier and earlier each year. These people are responsible making this a success and the way we tell is marked in a number of ways: Since the class we have seen many of the students at CSA crewing. Becoming members Buying boats Many were at the open house (Jeanette Beier, Chairperson), Luau (Patti Davis and Janice Watson, both of whom are Adult Sail Students previously) and fireworks (all a huge success) Comment cards that are turned in at the end of class. Smile factor during and after the class. The students were really engaged during the class. Many are shopping for boats It was exciting watching the instructors and the students work together and progress over the three day class. Watch for these people at the lake: Continue next page...!! 7

CSA MARKS OF THE COURSE YEAR # 28 for CSA JUNIOR SAIL CAMP Twenty-nine campers arrived at CSA Sunday, June with a check-in of boats, finding spot for belongings, setting up tents and saying hi to friends and getting acquainted with new sailors. Ted Beier and David Crosby coordinated camp before camp, Erica Sepanski coordinated the week, John Sepanski is the Instructor of Instructors, Laura Severson is chief cook. Staying with kids at night were Doc Bill Fogarty, Jay and Helen Buchta and Rick Bernstein. Instructors included Melina Crosby, Alina Crosby, Shirley Bild, Alex Severson, Doug Flath and Felicia Bamer. Additional helpers included Brian Bild, Terry Crosby, Kathy Mencin and daily volunteers. Sunday evening began with three groups of Team Building where we met each other, had the ball run through PVC pipes, wind awareness, and, And, who stayed up too late; no, who does not know how to Whisper? After the Safety Walk on Monday and Instruction (Advanced, Intermediate and Optis) all groups got their boats ready. Was that storm morning? Or was that Tuesday? And, all Sailed on Monday! New for Some! Rusty for Others! New Philosophy? Let s Not Spend so much time going around those Buoys! With the strange day -- Lesson 101 on weather clouds and storms at CSA All sailed! Then after dinner ALL had a ride on a Melges 24, Hunter 23, Catalina 25 or Catalina 25 into a delightful evening with an incredible sunset. Oh, we had these three groups: U.S.S. (Unstoppable Sailor Swag), Super Sailors, T.U.R.D. (Team Ultimate Rubber Duckies). Three Flags were designed and made after the name was created. And, all participated in these unique competitions. On Friday the tie breaker was won by U.S.S., Super Sailors was in 2 nd place and 3 rd was T.U.R.D. Erica s creativity SHINED in designing the individual competitions for groups! Have you ever put an Oreo on your forehead and ate it without touching it with hands. Or have you ever bounced ping pong balls on a table and had them land in a cup! Have you ever blown up balloons and let the air out to get cups off a table that is 3 foot wide? Tuesday Alex, for Intermediates, set up the picnic table (upside down of course) and attached a main sheet and tiller and tiller extension to practice tacking. Put that Back Leg Across the Boat First and don t let go of tiller extension nor main sheet. All three groups got in instruction and sailing! However, Tuesday afternoon had to include Steal the Bacon after lunch and then Water Polo late in the afternoon. Day ended with a Free Sail into the Sunset! Was that guitar and fire night by the tents! Also, another night or two or three! ADVENTURE WEDNESDAY!!!!!! Well, light wind for cabin boats! John in Mingo; Melina in Small World ; Doug in Nightwind ; me in Knotta Yatta! and two Whalers took off across the lake with about 7-9 kids each to South Shore; 2 nd Trilateralization Station ; to Coles Creek for an anchored swim; to Allen Branch for lunch served by Laura, Terry, Brian,... Did you know you could get to the high water dock in Allen Branch without running aground!? And, I learned that we need to take more tours for CSAers to know about the shores and creeks on Carlyle Lake. Since two of us did not have motors, we did not get to go into Boulder Yacht Club to see the narrow channel and the red/green buoys. Ask Mingo Melges about a main halyard and shackle. After lunch Knotta Yacht went northeast to see the Silo on this perfectly clear day before returning to CSA. Then off to the Carlyle Pool for the Pizza Party and a SWIM. I called it SPLASH! Patrick Won! Continue next page...

CSA MARKS OF THE COURSE Thursday was light air! All Optis were sailing! Some could get to the windward mark. In the afternoon after tie-dying tee shirts, the Advanced took a trip down to the Dam Beach to swim. And, whatever the Advanced did, the Intermediates wanted to do it also. When we arrived the Advanced were gone. Fortunately, we intermediates were visited with popsicles (rumor Advanced got ice cream). Thanks Melina! Isn t that the day that all Beginners made it out of the harbor well barely! Friday morning began with the Photo. The Advanced came out with masts tied together with ribbons and the Intermediates had to do it also. We got two BICS tied in the harbor and twice they got sailed. So, the others got tied, and the wind went to less than 0 mph so they had to rock back to the dock while still in the harbor before lunch. And, wait, wait, wait, wait,, postpone, wind came up and Firecracker Regatta Time! Put away boats! Bye! A GREAT GROUP OF KIDS! Golden Batten Recipients for CSA Junior Sail Camp are: Dan Lindauer, Matt Bald, Emma Radcliff, Nicholas Flath, Katherine Toltemark. Aeolus (Felicia) 2012 CSA Junior Sail Camp by Megan Crosby In the previous years of sail camp racing was always the main focus. This years junior sail camp was directed toward having fun and adventuring. All of the campers were split off into three different teams. Each team had to create a team flag, and would compete in 'minute to win it' challenges to earn points. This competition was on-going throughout the whole week. The campers tried multiple different tasks; anywhere from moving an Oreo cookie down your face into your mouth with just face muscles, to blowing cups off of a table with a balloon. Many of the campers got a chance to explore inside Peppenhorst Branch, a part of a lake that not many go into. Peppenhorst was filled with a lot of stumps but exploring back inside there was a lot of fun. We went so far back until you could stand in the water, and all the advance kids swam around for a bit. On Wednesday, We had our LDV day (long distance voyage). Two Catalina s (25 and 250), a San Juan 21, and a Melges 24 all went out. We went to different sites on the lake, and then all anchored in Coles Creek for a swim. After that the boats made their way over to Allen Branch where everyone sat on the fishing pier and had lunch. The intermediate and advanced Lasers also took a trip to the beach at West Access. It was a nice reach all the way across the lake, and then we pulled our boards and just sailed up onto the sand. The campers played on the beach for a while, and the advanced group even went out for ice cream before sailing back to CSA. We played many games out on the water. One of them was called 'Siamese Twins.' In that game, you had to tie a ribbon to the top of your mast and a partners mast. The goal was to sail around as long as possible with out breaking your ribbon. We also played capture the flag. We had life jackets that were fastened onto marks, and rubber duckies that you had to throw at another boat to tag them. If the boat got tagged they had to go back to their side and sing Twinkle Twinkle little star five times as loud as they could. During that game, we did a boat swap. All of the Bic sailors went on Lasers and vice versa. Later in the week we did starting drills (upwind and downwind starts) in preparation for Friday's Firecracker Regatta. When the regatta came there was no wind at first, but as the day went on it started to really blow. All of the groups had intense races. Almost every boat capsized, but each kid got back out there and tried again. Results next page.

CSA MARKS OF THE COURSE Cabin Fever Joe s Update June turned out to be a great month for sailing this year. We had lots of events, visitors, warm days and plenty of wind to keep our docks full of boats and happy faces. At times this can bring a congested launching ramp as I had several people bring to my attention. Over the years the launching procedures have been fine tuned; and if we follow them the best we can, things tend to flow very nicely. Most importantly let s be safe, practice some tolerance, have fun and please, keep coming back for more. :) Until next time, sail fast and don't panic Joe Upcoming Schedule! Cal Guthrie raced on Bill Bertrand s J-29 Determined (gosh I wish I had not seen that/felt that rip on the spinnaker from the horizontal bar of the CSA CB flag pole). I hope that next year CSA cabin boats will race in the JAM fleet since there were only three competitors raced OM. Be Careful! Well, I learned the hard way. The left ramp had algae on it. I came down the ramp backwards during sail camp to talk with an instructor about an OPEN BIC being full of water since the plug was partly out and to ask him if it was AOK. I backed down to in front of the algae on the port side of the van. However, the starboard rear tire on Van the Van was in algae. After flooring it four times, the rubber started, I finally went forward and did the rubber ever stink and smoke. Then, Visitors Day Saturday the tire blew near St. Clair Mall. 16 july CSA MARKS OF THE COURSE` LETTER FROM THE TEMPORARY EDITOR Hello my friends. I am sending an appeal to CSA looking for someone to take over as Editor of the Marks-of-the-Course. Due to significant changes in my life that now require me to relieve myself of some of my CSA responsibilities, I am stepping down as the Editor, a job I took figuring it would be temporary. Aside from wanting to spend more time with my three kids, Kyle, Jacob and Marina, as of last month I started not only a new job, but an entirely different career path that s taking me down a road I would have never imagined. All of this is very good, however I want and need to spend more time with my family and my new job. The task of editing these marks is as easy as taking the existing template in Microsoft Word, either for the PC or MAC, and cutting and pasting new articles from month to month. It s also just as easy to copy and paste pictures, files from s and information you can find on the web that you as the editor feel would be useful in our newsletter. I am more than willing to walk you through the required steps...all you have to bring to the table is a few hours a month and some creativity. If interested, please contact me as soon as possible at: rick@aboveandbeyond.tv or give me a call at Again, I will take whatever time is needed to help you smoothly and seamlessly transition in to being the Marks editor. Thank you, Rick Bernstein CSA MARKS OF THE COURSE 714 Yale Ave St. Louis, MO 63119
