2 2 OCTOBER 2010 Cat Tales by Holly Hoffman September 5th Race Committee Tom Paoli PRO and Nicky Mark Paoli and friend on Whaler saved something like, 5 people, 2 lifejackets, and a hat so reported fleet captian Shirley Allen. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Flotsam - Anything floating in the water from which there is no response when an offer of a cocktail is made. skipper s mtg, Strawberry Regatta. top: former Hobie 16 sailor Barb Mencin and Nancy Tuffli below: Nancy Tuffli, Sue Dudek, and Pat O Donnell Howdy, Fleetsters! So much excitement on our lake this past month! On September 5 th we had a long distance race in gusty shifty wind with plenty of Cat involvement. Al Bromley and his wife Carol kindly stopped their participation in the race to assist with righting a fellow Hobie 16. Dave Waugh sailed Bob Monaghan s 18-2 while Bob sailed his Inter 18 with John Herdlien (the former owner of the 18-2). Daniel Paoli came out on his dad s Nacra 20; Joe Leonard brought out his snazzy A-Cat and was one of the first back to the harbor. There were a lot of new crews on the water with skippers Joe Bartman, Dave Leimbach, and Craig Lincoln. John and Penny Peika sailed their H16. Josh Doherty and crew Heather, looked like they had a good time. Russ Ammons sailed in all that breeze solo on his trusty Hobie Getaway. And, the latest in the Jaeger boat saga, Ray and Mary Jaeger, with daughter Lauren took part on the next resurrection of his H16. On September 11 th we had the Strawberry Women s Regatta with the traditional fluky wind and variety of female participants from all fleets. A full complement of 3 catamarans were on the water enjoying the flukiness this year including the long missing Nancy Tuffli who took 1 st on her Mystere! Karen Pauls took 2 nd followed by PatSue. The wind was as unpredictable as a teenage girl, from everywhere and mostly nowhere that day but the ladies were brave and persevered for 2 races. The awards stage backdrop was very prettily decorated with a colorful Hobie sail. Well done, Dave Leimbach! Speaking of adventures, Hans Aldenhoff and his Hobie 18 have been on several this season. A few weeks ago he bravely set out single-handedly in a 25 mph blow, ended up capsized, was kindly towed into Allen Branch by a Good Samaritan fisherman and reported missing to the Rangers by our watchful Harbormaster. Mary Bartman said he has had this particular adventure in one form or another 4 times this year. Braver man than I! Way to keep at it, Hans! On September we had the 40 th annual Whale of a Sail. Doug Draper, my skipper on the J105, told me he has sailed all 40 which I found to be impressive. There were an equally impressive 90 boats on the 3 race courses this year, one of the largest in the history of the regatta. The wind was again uncooperative though I won t complain much as Bladerunner won the one race we were able to complete. I would love to give you more results; unfortunately, the scores are not yet posted. I suspect the Whale of a Party that occurred on Saturday evening was inspired, in large part, by the early imbibing that the lack of wind generated. The majority of our RC on the cabin boat course consisted of the experts from the North American Catamaran Championship RC in Racine, led by our ever confident and competent leader, Dave Bryant. They did a great job with the mixed bag Mama Nature threw at them for the regatta. Last but not least on September Mr. Mike Hill won Area K at Kool Kats Regatta on Lake Kegonsa in Stoughton, WI and therefore qualifies for an invitation to the next Alter Cup. Congrats, Mike! And a BIG THANK YOU to Mr. Tom Paoli for making the best looking sandy beach on the Catfield ever! photos by Karen Pauls

3 Flying Scottlebutt by Linda Tatum OCTOBER Memories of Whale 2010! Saturday the Mutineers continued their Nationals while the rest of us hoped for wind to sail the Whale. After staring at a Mirror of Muddy Water most of the day in late afternoon the race committee took the Mutineers out and they did have enough wind to continue Nationals. The rest of us got an early start on Flying Scot wine party prior to the club dinner. We welcomed several out of town Scots! Included were a new family from Bowling Green KY: Larry and Diana Caillouet (#2864) and Frank and MaryAnne Gerry, Ben Williams and Debbie Aronson, Mike Bibb (KC) and Sam Bibb (Mizzou) with Joe Gerrity. Joe reported on his exercise program which which seems to keep him in great spirits and a role model for those of us who one day will be retired sailors. Rodney Bussell Storms with Rain began before 2300 Saturday. RC left dock and those getting later start out the harbor found themselves paddling to the starting line. Did the wind ever get up to 2 km/hour? Only seven of us sailed the one Whale race Sunday morning! Top CSA finishers were third place Emilio and Sue Tellini and fourth place Robb and Hannah Preston. The event was won by Frank and Marianne of Lake Delavan with 2nd taken by Ben Williams and Deb Aronson Clinton Lake (Ben and Deb used to race Lightnings at CSA) Bill Vogler attended the Glow in the Dark regatta at Clinton Lake. Harry & Carrie Carpenter won with 4 2nds and a 1st place in 5 races. Four different racers racked up at least one victory in each of the five races. Boats came from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Maryland, & IL to compete in the quaint and friendly regatta. Harry C. was in town to deliver a new Scot to a sailor from Decatur, IL. Winds were light on Sat. and very strong and shifty on Sunday. Bill Vogler with crew Rob Preston placed 4th of 13 boats. Behind the Carpenters, were locals Ben Williams & Deb Aronson in 2nd, then Frank and Marianne Gerry (Egyptian Cup winners). Bill reports on Sat. we finished a respectable 4th, 4th, and then a stinker 7th. The stinker occurred after fouling an opponent and spending much of the race in 13th place. We somehow maneuvered into 7th by the end. After adding weather crew, Deb Torgeson on Sunday, we fared better with a 2nd then a 1st place to close out the racing in some pretty stiff breezes! Bill wants to see more CSA sailors going to the Glow next year as the competition from 7th 13th is very comparable to many of our own boats and the racing should be fun and not just for the so called hot shots! The Clinton locals and others will be more likely to reciprocate by coming to our Egyptian Cup & Whale if we go to their regattas! The event is very much a small, friendly, chip in type regatta with a camping, cookout, & bonfire type venue. Fleet #83 helped out at the Friday evening pot luck by providing potato salad, crackers, and wine. Some boats from Wisconsin provided beer and brats. Bill reports the place finish and point total to the best of my knowledge for the 1st five boats: Harry and Carrie Carpenter pts Ben Williams and Deb Aronson pts Frank & Mariane Gerry pts Bill V. & Rob P pts Larry Klick pts Historic Flying Scot now in Museum Clark and Rhoda Ashby s Flying Scot, boat (#4) was recently placed into new Oakland transportation museum near Deep Creek Lake, Maryland. This is the boat Bill Vogler and Jill delivered to Maryland last November. Bill believes this boat was the first commercially sold Flying Scot boat in the US. It was sailed originally at Crab Orchard Lake in Carbondale, IL by Jack and Lois Brown from Benton, IL who had it delivered by Sandy Douglas. Lois Brown still lives in Benton and is a contemporary and friend of Florence Glass wife of Ted Glass, former FSSA president who resided in Mt. Vernon, IL. The Glasses sailed at Crab Orchard then Carlyle Lake for many years. Frank & Mariane Gerry first place Whale Ben Williams and Deb Aronson 2nd place Whale

4 4 OCTOBER 2010 Cabin Fever by Felicia Bamer Whale Race committee Pros, John Woodworth, Dave Bryant, Jack/Shirley Firse, and Felicia Bamer Chuck and Marge Alyea at the Whale HARVEST MOON What a gorgeous sight! Saturday evening the beautiful red moon rise was spectacular! Fall has arrived! Leaves are turning! Chill is in the air! Lake is going below normal pool! And, I hope you witnessed the Harvest Moon several evenings and early mornings especially at CSA! WINE AND ;) TEARS Sunday, October 31 around 3 p.m. Where???? Either on Garrett Island or in the Clubhouse! BYOB and simple hors dourvre! BYC COMMODORE S CUP REGATTA and CHILI DINNER Saturday, October 2: CYC ANNUAL GREAT RACE and DINNER Saturday, October 30: 40th ANNIVERSARY WHALE OF A SAIL Chuck and Marge Alyea won the Long Distance Races that started up at Allen Branch with RC Jack/Shirley Firse with Denny/ Shara Taylor. Jim and Barb Mencin were 2nd and Dave Leimbach and Linda Ditzler were 3rd. Dave Bryant on his Catalina 25 chaired the Cabin One-Design with assistance from Dave Waugh and Karen Pauls, Sue Dudek and Pat O Donnell. Somehow Skipper Ann and Bob Lacker received a trophy for JAM I bet they finished! One-Design Committee included John/Peg Woodworth with Cliff Flath and Howard/Cheryl Harris plus Whale Regatta Chairmen David and Terry Crosby are also Cabin sailors. San Juan21 Fearless Team Melina and Megan Crosby; Shannon and Alli Lacker finished 3rd in Miscellaneous Fleet. CSA HARE AND HOUND 5TH RACE SATURDAY, SEP- TEMBER 25 AND CABIN BARBEQUE After a slow afternoon on Long Distance Race, the Cabins had a barbeque again at the top of the hill. Chairman of the Series Chuck Alyea commented: The 2010 H&H racing series has come to a close. The new more competitive type racing format has not increased nor decreased the number of racing participants, so much for hope and change. If I had done a better job of controlling the bugs, the wind, the rain, the heat, the flooding, the visits from your out of town relatives, and if I had not had other events scheduled on my race dates, probably the H&H series could have been more successful. My hope is that next year the new Cabin Fleet Race Chairman can come up with a winning formula to make the H&H series a success. I suggest you contact Chuck if you have a remote control sailboat for sailing these up-and-coming six (6) months. ANNUAL NOVEMBER WINE TOUR Sunday at noon on November the 7th Where? Augusta or...??????????? Sail Safe! Sail Fast! Sail For Fun! Aeolus (Felicia Bamer) Members of the Cabin Fleet enjoying the BBQ on the hill.

5 Why do you like CSA Betty Struckhoff OCTOBER open water and wind was very friendly affordable social activities people, especially wind facility Hare and Hounds boat not stored in water people sailing course good place to learn and meet others with same interests Those are some of the responses to last year s survey of new CSA members. This year s new members will be getting an soon asking you to tell us what you think about our club, how we can improve it and how we can attract more new members like you. And any member can share what you like about CSA and what you think can be improved by taking the on-line survey at this link: FlCRFBxbnc6MA It only takes five minutes of your time. Assuming you are willing to spend a bit more time helping to improve the best sailing club in the Midwest, mark your calendar now for the CSA annual member meeting on Friday, November 12 in the evening. There s always good food, drink and friends. This is your opportunity to learn more about our wonderful club and share your ideas for making it better. 6 6 OCTOBER 2010 Visit csa-sailing.org for the race results and pictures. We have some GREAT action pictures, even Nancy Tuffli flying a hull YAHOOOOOO. A special thanks goes out to all who participated and helped, including Dan Haile and the race committee. Strawberry Scoop by Dave Leimbach The 2010 Strawberry Women s Regatta and Fashion Show is now history. We had wonderful wind, flat water, and comfortable temperatures for two races. Race results are posted at the CSA website, csa-sailing.org. We had participants from Boulder Yacht Club, Carlyle Yacht Club, and Carlyle Sailing Association. It was a growing experience for many. We had some people who had never been on a race course, some who never had the helm in a race, and those who have never been on a boat without a man onboard. They learned from each other and were inspired by those who had the helm and responsibility of the boat. Several women told me that they were so inspired that they are going to be at the helm of their own boat next year and will practice to get there. It was very nice to see some of our students from the Adult Sailing Seminar and husbands involved. We had men on spectator boats and some of those men had never sailed before. When the racing was over and the women had a chance to get freshened up, the men provided a very tasty and healthy dinner. A special thanks to John Woodworth, who coordinated the food and smoked the turkey and pork. After dinner, vocalist Linda Ditzler incorporated a musical performance intertwined amongst the fashion show, including audience members for special performances of Big Spender, LeRoy Nooter, Get Out Of Here, Norm Karl, and many others. The bar was expertly staffed by Joe Bartman, LeRoy Nooter, and Bill Bertrand serving the beverages including Strawberry Daiquiris. The Nautical Fashion Show was a special feature this year as the ladies teamed up using special kits with only ten minutes to design outfits utilizing the theme Nautical Fashion Faux pas. WOW did they ever faux pas. My mother designed and knitted special hats to resemble a strawberry for this event. They were a big hit, truly the new MUST HAVE in the world of sailing fashion. photos by Ed Verch
