June 2014 MARKS OF THE COURSE Carlyle Sailing Association Philippi Harbor Carlyle Illinois CSA-Sailing.org Commodore s Corner Editor: Mike Niehoff Another Sailing for Veterans is in the books. Rick and company have put on another slick event. Our club was splendid to look at Red, White and Blue everywhere. Thanks to all of you who helped put it up and stayed to take it down. Our guests gave us good reviews on our Salute to Veterans and Service People of today. Coming soon a Lighthouse near you. It will sit on a 30 inch silo that required 12 cubic feet of concrete. This was done with the services of famed lighthouse builders Howard Harris, Jerry DeWille, Peter da mixa Mackercher, David Crosby, Liam horse Coonan and Dave Leimbach. Watch for the Grand Hoopla Lighting Party. I am not out of Grandchildren to show you. Here I am with Madison, our 12 year old. In addition to being a Karate Black Belt, she is an avid reader and serious student. In April she was accepted into the National Honor Society. She can sail also and will be at the Junior Sail Camp. Next month is just packed with Adult Sail Seminar, Hare and Hounds, Pursuit Race, Membership Party, not to mention Open House and Luau. Be there. There seems to be more than one opinion about the perfect weather that was guaranteed for this past week-end. I can tell you Helen reveled in it and did some of her best sailing. 2 June 2014 Page 2 Splinters From The Board Chairman Bernstein was absent from the May meeting, so it has befallen me to write this month s column. A number of items arose, which will be of interest to the CSA membership. The meeting began with the counting of ballots from the election to choose a Board member from the CSA membership in the presence of witnesses chosen by the two candidates. Each candidate received a significant number of votes, with Sebastian Bautz receiving the majority. We welcome him to the CSA Board. It was announced that the State of Illinois is no longer mailing reminders when renewal of your state boat number is due. Many of you may need to renew in June of this year as do I. You must take the initiative and register on line at Look for renew my watercraft registration from the How do I? list in the center of the page. Remember the law states that your boat must be numbered in its state of principal use, and if you are a CSA member, that s Illinois. Capital expenditures were discussed, and two large maintenance items are facing us: replacing the siding on the pole barn, and replacing the porch decking and step stringers on the observation building. The Board accepted a bid for around $8000 to replace the barn siding for immediate action as the current fiber board siding is well past its expected life, and a major storm could cause major sections to depart. The new siding will be steel of a type that has demonstrated a long life on farm and commercial buildings in the area. The decking replacement is substantially more expensive (perhaps up to $20K), and will be deferred for now. This project is something that CSA members could do in a piecemeal fashion for work hours at much less cost. There was much discussion about an increasing lack of compliance with harbor rules recently; especially rules that involve member safety. We all need to get back on track with these. If you see a fellow member doing these, please remind them politely of the issue. Some of the more important, and their reasons, are: Putting owners name and parking space numbers on trailer or dolly tongues. Without this information, the harbormaster does not know who to call in case of storm damage or flood. Getting under a boat when it is hanging on a hoist by its sling, either standing on the lot or on the sea wall whaler board is a very bad idea. Working under a hanging boat without an adjacent support is foolish. We re sure you would not work under a car on a jack without an adjacent jack stand for backup. We need all of the members we have, and would hate to lose one to a falling boat. Bringing cars onto the boat parking lot on weekends except for delivering/retrieving boats or other heavy items is prohibited. Using them to impose your choice of music on others is impolite as well. If you have a valid reason for bringing a car onto the boat lot, be very careful and proceed slowly when crossing the center driveway. We have had several near misses of car-pedestrian collisions. If it must remain there for more than load/unload time, please secure the permission of the harbormaster. Jack and Shirley Firse made a presentation about starting an adaptive sailing program at CSA. This is a program which introduces veterans with moderate disabilities and their family members to sailing to show them that more freedom of activity is available to them. The Board expressed interest, willingness to provide some financial support, and requested that they continue to develop the idea. The next step is to find interested boat owner/instructors with suitable, stable boats. A pilot program with a limited number of boats and clients was recommended for later this summer. You will probably be hearing more about this worthy project. Sail safe, Sail often, Ted Beier, Vice-chair, CSA BOD
June 2014 Page 3 May 23-25, 2014 Photo: R Bernstein When the tables were put away, the decorations taken down, trash cleaned up, boats all secured and tied down till the next sail, it was time for this sailor to sit down with a few friends by the beer truck, under the trees, and take a breath. I will admit, this took place with my first Captain and Coke for the weekend, and it was a good toast. I sat with some of my dearest and oldest friends from CSA, along with our kids, and realized the event was over our 2nd Sailing for Veterans Regatta was in the books. There's a load of adrenaline created in the system when an event like this starts, all the way till its conclusion. Sometimes it goes so fast we miss out on the fun; not this time folks, this regatta was a blast. Sure, we had some light air on Saturday; sure, we had a little rain on Sunday; yes, the bread on the lunches could have been better; and sure, every merchandise item could have been purchased. But hey, we raised close to $30,000 and that my friends is pure and simple success. The regatta had some cool new items this year. We brought in this button group that, for a small donation, took your picture and placed it on a button for all to wear. It was a nice keepsake for us to hold and use to remember the regatta for years to come. We heard great reviews on the BBQ dinner provided by Tornatores. Can't remember us going this route in years and thankful the masses approved. The rum party Saturday night, oy did the Lightning Fleet bring in the bottles for us, so thank you. The Focus Marine Foundation and The Fisher House, the two great beneficiaries of all the hard work and donations, will receive a very nice check in the weeks to come thanks to almost 8 months of planning by a bunch of very cool, dedicated and passionate people. Together, along with all of you that attended, and the out-of-towners, everything went off as clockwork. A big thank you to Carlyle Yacht Club and Bob and Susan Snyder for the yummy cocktail party Friday night put on for our meet-and-greet party. Norma Hall and her crack crew of cooks and planners prepared some of the best breakfasts our charity events have seen, so thank you all. I guess no news is great news so congratulations to Sebastian Bautz and his registration team for getting all the boats organized and onto the race course. Of course all their hard work made the job of scorer, John Folwell's job, that much easier; again we had the scores in record time. The auctions were a hit, both silent and live, with almost $5,000 grossed from them. This was great work by Linda Ditzler and her team. I thought the raffle this year was a great addition with everyone being given great chances to get a lot of cool stuff. Thank you Ted Beier, John Woodworth, Denny Taylor and Dave Leimbach for their excellent Race Committee work. Bill Kesler's website was once again spot on and I heard very good reviews on everything tied to this.
June 2014 Page 4 Photo: R Bernstein that we're a society of takers. Year after year, I see that we sailors know how to give and not just receive, and I commend all of you. On behalf of our organizing committee and the veterans that will receive our bounty, I thank you. In closing, there's one minor detail I'd like to ask your help with. We have too much merchandise left. I will be sending an out shortly with pictures and an inventory list in the hope that you all make some additional purchases for people on your birthday, graduation, Chanukah and Christmas lists. I hope you all have a superb rest of the summer. Thanks Shirley and Jack for donating the Veterans hats which were all given free to anyone who attended the regatta who is or has served in the military; this my friends was a nice touch. Thank you, Carolyn Burke for the great effort on getting and preparing the trophies. For a multi class regatta this is always a tough task. Jim Akins and his family sure did keep the place nice and clean, so thanks to you. Merchandise was handled by Arthur Merdinian who had a lot of support manning the selling from Friday night all the way through Sunday. Barb and Dave Huhn and their team out did themselves this year making the decorations and turning all of CSA into a star spangle banner of patriotic red, white and blue. Using his creative juices, Joe Bartman did a great job on the regatta program, and thank you Bob Snyder for coordinating the printing. Saint Louis Sail and Paddle, thank you for bringing out your boats for visitors to give sailing a try. And last, but not least, thank you Mary Bartman for all the crazy hard work you put into getting the club ready for this great event. You see, although there are many names here, this is only part of the list of those who dedicated time and money to carry out this formidable fund raiser for our veterans. Finally, thank you to everyone who came and gave. I read more and more Rick Bernstein Chairman Sailing for Veterans Regatta Photo: R Bernstein We thank our corporate sponsor BMO Private Bank.
June 2014 Page 5 CSA Racing Clinic By Jim Disano Ted Beier organized and chaired a racing clinic on Sunday, May 18, 2014 in place of the normal Sunday Race Program. This seminar was designed for new and nearly new sailors who wanted to learn or refine their racing skills. Twenty sailors attended the morning classroom session. Ted provided a handout with lots of information. There was also a chalk talk about racing rules, starting sequences, starting tactics, and how to get around the course. The classroom session included several experienced sailors who added their two cents worth to the presentation and to the answers to participant questions. After an hour or so of classroom instruction, the group broke for lunch. After lunch, class was reconvened on the water where a start-finish line was setup. The wind was generally light, with occasional puffs coming down the lake and then dissipating to near-calm conditions. But at least they kept coming. The racers had to contend with quite variable wind direction during the session. It didn t come from every direction, but it certainly used a lot of the compass headings. First, there were three or four starting sequences run through where the only point was to start and sail upwind for a few minutes and then come back for another start. The racers left plenty of room in the starts on the first sequence. Each subsequent sequence resulted in more boats closer to the line when the horn sounded. One racer even got a compliment on their start over the PA from Mr. Beier. After a couple of these start and return sequences, the racers progressed to sailing around a windward mark and doing a downwind finish. After a couple of these, a leeward mark was set below the committee boat and the racers sailed around a leeward and windward mark to an upwind finish. One boat, who shall remain nameless, tried to hook the windward mark and steal it, but it came unhooked and we didn t have to call the water patrol. This clinic Photo: J Beier was a good chance for newer racers to learn more about racing and to put that learning to immediate use in a less intense environment than a normal Sunday Club Race. The participants got lots of practice and experienced some challenging and frustrating wind conditions. Based on observation, the racers came out of the day better racers than when they started. A big thank you goes to Ted Beier for putting on the clinic, and for the handful of volunteers on the committee and chase boats. If any of the participants have any thoughts for making next year s clinic better, please feel free to share them with Ted Beier or Jim Disano. Photo: J Beier Photo: J Beier

Carlyle Sailing Association Hazlet Park Road Carlyle, IL June 2014 Page 16 Do You Know where this lighthouse used to protect sailors from the shoals? The light pictured here is actually the 4th generation. The first, a brick conical tower, was built in 1849 and destroyed by a storm in The second and third light were also destroyed by storms and beach erosion. This light was built as a 98-foot skeletal lighthouse with eight cast iron legs. This tower, originally 1500 feet from shore, was damaged by a powerful storm in 1894 and left standing in water. In 1918 is was moved 1/4 mile to where is stands today, but is no longer open to visitors due to beach erosion. Have you figured it out yet? This is the Cape San Blas Lighthouse located near the town of Port St. Joe on the Florida panhandle. It was originally built to warn ships of the dangerous shoal at the Cape. Even though the light is closed to visitors, you can park your car and walk the beach about 1 mile to see it up close.
