2 2 AUGUST 2010 Commodore s Corner What a great summer we ve had at CSA so far. In June, we provided two great opportunities for juniors and adults alike to learn to sail or just improve their skills: the Junior Sailing Camp and the Adult Sail Seminar. Both events were well attended, and the latter has provided a great source of crew and possible future members of the club. With one US Sailing certified instructor for every two students, the Adult Sail Seminar is one of the best deals going. July 3 rd was a busy day with the second Open House of the year, a Hare & Hounds race in the afternoon and the Luau and fireworks show in the evening. The Open House was a huge success, with over 220 guests in attendance. Many skippers came out to give boat rides, allowing visitors to try out several different classes of boats. A big thank-you goes out to Wendy Haglin and all the volunteers for helping show off the great facility we have and sharing their enthusiasm for sailing. If you weren t one of the 120 guests that came to the Luau and fireworks show, you missed a great evening. The food was awesome, and after a long day on the water, the Mai Tai s were very, very, very good. Josh Doherty and his crew did a great job transforming the pavilion into the CSA Tiki Bar, complete with island music, tiki torches, and sailors sporting their finest grass skirts, lei s, and Hawaiian shirts. The party was capped off with a spectacular fireworks display over the lake. Make plans now to attend next year! This year, we are introducing a new program called the Practice Series on Sunday mornings in July and August. This program is designed to appeal to novices and experts alike. It will help beginning racers learn the basics, get more comfortable maneuvering their boat around the racecourse, and practice new skills. It is also a great opportunity for the hot-shots to come out and practice their starts, mark-roundings, and boat handling skills. The format is simple: meet in the O.B. at 10:00 a.m. for a quick seminar and discussion, then head out on the water to practice the skills you just learned. A different topic will be covered each week (e.g.: starting, mark rounding, wind shifts, etc..). On the water, we will set a small course and run a bunch of short races. You can contact Robb Preston for more information. On July 17 th, the annual CSA Championship ( Blue Ribbon ) was held in borrowed Y-Flyers. The winds cooperated, and eight CSA fleet champions competed in a 7-race one-day regatta, with Matt Burridge and crew Paul Hanson coming out on top with three bullets. Thanks to Felicia Bamer for once again organizing the regatta, and to the Y-Flyer fleet for loaning their boats. Sincerely, Jean-Pierre Bordes CSA Commodore
3 Splinters from the Board AUGUST Hello Members, A lot is going on since we last chatted it up here so let s get to it. Great success to report from our 2nd Open House thanks to the great work by our committee led by Wendy Haglin. In May our first event saw 65 people walk through out gates; this time on July 3rd, 225 people attended. The Luau was also a great success, this one thanks to Chairman Josh Doherty and his staff. On a great weather day, the event welcomed 120 guests to great drinks, food, games and of course, perfect CSA sailing conditionsj Seems like our Practice Series on Sunday mornings is off to a good start.at this writing there will have been 3 of them and the Commodore reports good attendance. Thanks to Rob Preston for his dedication to this project. In evaluating the Hare & Hound Series.the Commodore reports attendance has been ok, however for next season we need to plan H & H days not on other CSA scheduled events. This is Chuck Alyea s baby so thanks for the hard work to make this fun for those involved. Adult Sail Seminar directed by Director Leimbach saw 34 students during the 3 day event in late June. This year, the weather was not too warm and there was really good sailing wind the first 2 days so good the students sailed more than classroomed, which is great. The follow up to this year s seminar is I keep seeing and hearing more students already involved in CSA events, which is fantastic. Plan on Internet access in the basement of the OB the next time you re there. We discussed adding sailing training videos to our website. This would be a great tool for newer sailors to be able to watch on their own time and use as training tools for themselves and their crews. The expense would be minimal since the videos are already produced. We ll keep you updated on the progress of this. Our budget, congratulations Commodore Bordes, is ahead of last year. The board is investigating rational and budget to replace the windows in the OB. The board created a House Committee to diagnose and respond to issues relating to members and the like; it consists of Jerry Dewille, John Folwell, Ted Beier and myself. Usually the best is saved for last, I ve done the opposite. We re still struggling with our RC boat. At this writing the pontoon was to be back; I was up yesterday taking Sunday racing pictures and it was not. Thank you Gerald Donaldson for lending CSA his powerboat to assist with our racing. To all, it s blazing hot out there. Please watch your water intake, sunscreen BEFORE you go outside and watch others around you to make sure everyone s ok. 5 AUGUST Whale of a Sail Registration The Carlyle Sailing Association Whale of a Sail SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Friday, September 17 th Saturday, September 18 th Sunday, September 19 th CLASSES/COURSES WHAT TO EXPECT: ACCOMMODATIONS: NO camping or pets are permitted on CSA grounds. DIRECTIONS * Class Questions? CABIN BOATS PLEASE COMPLETE PAGE 2 OF REGISTRATION

See JIBE and SPAR. * Sunday racing, photos by Rick Bernstein Cat Tales by Holly Hoffman Howdy, Fleetsters! Welcome to the dog days of summer, when the humidity suffocates and the weather forecasters are left guessing just like the rest of us. The lake is still up which is nice as it means the water is closer to the boat spaces and one doesn t have to push one s boat as far to launch it. We also had sand delivered to refresh our beach (when we can see it again) that has created our two new CSA atolls, conveniently placed so that newcomers to the beach can simply park their boat on them while they retrieve their wheels. Just another service our fantastic club provides! Latham has been enjoying his new A-cat, indeed he followed in Joe s footsteps the other day, driving the boat onto the launching ramp ( Latham, ramp! Ramp! ), giving himself a smart smack to the back of the head with the boom, and promptly parking his new boat onto one the aforementioned atolls ( Latham! Sand pile! Sand pile! ) Go Latham! May your new boat provide you with even more excitement in the future (and not get you maimed)! On another note, the oil spill disaster in the Gulf has affected our Southern sailing community drastically. There have been several North American and National Championships that have been rescheduled, postponed or cancelled due to the mess in the Gulf of Mexico. On April 20, 2010 (Earth Day Eve) the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded, killing 11 people and injuring 17. The resulting blowout of oil from the well almost 5,000 feet below the surface of the Gulf has spilled an estimated 35-70,000 barrels of oil daily from April 20 to when the well was capped on July 15 th. On April 28 th BP began controlled burns of the slick. On May 5 th, they lowered a containment dome over the leaking well, however it failed due to ice crystals that formed on the way down. On May 16 th they inserted a smaller pipe into the flow of oil and gas in order to siphon off some of the leaking product. On May 27 th a top kill was attempted which consisted of injecting drilling mud and rubber particles into the leak to stop the flow. On June 1 st the US Government launched a criminal investigation of the spill. There is still ongoing seepage at the site though the cap that was placed on July 15 th has been holding for the most part. Unfortunately, the extreme depths and pressures of the site complicate the process immensely. It simply isn t possible to test the plans well before they are implemented. Most of the knowledge about the processes can only be based on good theory, obviously making it very difficult to develop a successful plan. The ongoing environmental and economic damage is certainly going to be a dilemma for decades to come. BP has reimbursed those affected by the spill some $200 million thus far, with more anticipated to be paid out. In Pensacola alone an estimated 60% of vacation reservations were cancelled. Considering tourism is one of the main industries of the area this was a significant blow. For our sport, it is anticipated the effects of the oil on our beaches will continue to be an immediate problem for at least 4-10 years. Certainly the exact environmental impact on the Gulf and the coastline will be difficult to determine. The cleanup efforts are ongoing and we hope our Southern brethren will be able to resume their normal working, sailing, and recreational schedules as soon as possible. Photos by Rick Bernstein
7 Flying Scottlebutt by Linda Tatum AUGUST Registration for our Flying Scot visitors BBQ, scheduled for August 14, is coming along. Skippers and Visitors please sign up by Aug 9 so we can plan for food. Those who plan to go for the Hare and Hound race, should probably bring a sandwich or snack to eat before/during the race. Skippers are to bring a dish to share at the mid to late afternoon BBQ. Fleet is providing brats, coleslaw and potato salad. Skippers Meeting for Hare & Hounds is 9:45 with race starting at 11. We have a new Flying Scot Fleet Member / Boat Owner, Mike O Brien. He is a neighbor of Bill and Carol Clark in Maryland Heights. When you see Mike at CSA introduce yourself to him and welcome him to the Flying Scot Fleet. His contact info is: mjobrien@sbcglobal. net (314) (cell). There is great news about our efforts for Flying Scot Fleet expansion. We have several new crew for our fleet, thus more boats on the water. Some are interested in becoming Flying Scot owners. July 11th began with Robert Preston, assisted by Bill Vogler, hosting the first Practice Series on Starts and Rules (Chalkboard and On the Water). Robert also ran the afternoon races. Emilio with his new MAD sails enjoyed the lead through most of the afternoon. July 18 Robert gave another chalk talk prior to races. Chalk Talk and several Scot racers and new crew! Memorial Service for our friend Joe Charleville, of Kirkwood, Missouri, was held July 20 at the Charleville Winery southwest of Ste. Genevieve. He is the widower of Alberta Charleville. He is survived by his loving companion Margaret Uhrich of Ft. Meyers. Joe passed away Saturday June 19, 2010 in Ft. Meyer s Florida. He was known as a friend to all who knew him. His CSA friends miss him. Joe was a retired aeronautical engineer from McDonnell Douglas (Boeing Aircraft), an avid sailor with the Carlyle Sailing Association, and Volunteer for Wings of Hope. Charitable donations in his memory to: Wings of Hope, Edison Ave., Chesterfield MO would be greatly appreciated. Services: Maryann Crews, President of Flying Scot Sailing Association, was in town for her daughter s wedding. Jim and Betty attended the wedding and the reception which followed. The reception was held at the Missouri Botanical Garden. Shirley Bild and Brian have been on a National Parks camping tour. They went to the Badlands, Mt. Rushmore, Wind Cave, Jewel Cave and Devils Tower National Parks then spent night at a high altitude campsite in Bighorn National Forest. Thus far they ve been cool at night and comfortable during the day. (Yes we are a bit envious of that weather report!) In Cody, WY they checked Cody library. Their next stop was Yellowstone NP. We look forward to slide show on Shirley s laptop. Lots of flying Scot owners want to thank Felicia for moving their boats out of the water when we had some flooding in July. Photo by John Millaire

10 10 AUGUST 2010 Every Sunday In 1978 I wheedled an invitation out of a neighbor and her boyfriend to give me a sail on Lake Carlyle. It was Labor Day weekend; I got a terrible sunburn and had a great time. They invited me to sail the Whale with them. We tent camped in Hazlett. It was a glorious September weekend. The next spring my neighbor called me and the conversation went like this: She: Remember Jim Harris out at the lake? Me: Yeah, sorta. She: He s looking for someone to crew for him this year; that s all he wants, just a crew. Me: Okay, we can talk. But I m not committing to every Sunday. Luckily, Jim was willing to accept that early lack of commitment. Thirty-one years of sailing and 28 years of marriage later you ll find us at CSA most Sundays. The moral of the story: Not everyone is ready to dive into sailing headfirst. Some folks may need time to find the space in their lives for it. So, keep inviting those folks who are mildly interested to come back for another sail. Don t ask new crew to reorganize their weekend lives before they are ready to do so. Be flexible, have fun and we ll eventually have more sailors enjoying our great sport. 12 12 AUGUST 2010 Notices MATT B WINS CSA C of C by Felicia Bamer Matt Burridge wins CSA Championship of Champions (Blue Ribbon) Saturday, July 17 in 5 to 8 knot breeze out of 195 to 215. Reigning Champion Dan Moriarty also had 3 firsts in the event but Matt scored higher in other races. Both Matt and Dan have approximately won equally the prestigious event that began 30 years ago. Being worried about a forecast of 2 mph breeze all day and with knowing I may be three (3) boats short with 10 responses, luck became on the side of all with a wonderful breeze for the summer event and not a heat index of 106. So, eight teams of top notch skippers and crews representing most of the fleets of CSA as well as National events competed fairly and closely for four morning races of approximately 24 minutes and the afternoon races of 12 minutes. The first race Dan won followed closely by Matt. After switching boats Matt won the next 3 races. Tom P won the 5th race with Dan winning the third race just beating Tobi for 2nd. As PRO I usually say I try to set races for fair racing the way I like to race. One of the pleasures of doing this group is the fair racing, but truly competitive racing in the Corinthian philosophy. Each has pride and respect of all! First was Matt Burridge with Paul Hanson; Second Dan Moriarty and Courtney Menges; Third was Tobi Moriarty with Nick Beckmann, Fourth was Tom Paoli and Commodore Jean Bordes, and Fifth was Ian Moriarty and Bobby Lacker. Thanks, Thanks, Thanks to the Y-Flyer Fleet for loaning their boats. And, Thanks to Glenn Grummon for doing Mark Set. Photos by Glenn Grummon top right, bottom right, bottom left.
