June 2013 MARKS OF THE COURSE Carlyle Sailing Association Philippi Harbor Carlyle Illinois CSA-Sailing.org Editor: Mike Niehoff Commodore s Corner Keeping this short and sweet because I m busy getting my boat together for this weekend. Fair Winds, Mike Hill CSA Commodore The seas have parted and we are back in business. It s great to get the club back sooner than expected. There are lots of activities just around the corner with Open House and Luau coming up June 30 th. It s time to shake the dust off the boats and get them back out to the club. Last weekend couldn t have been nicer for opening weekend with 12 knot breezes and sunny skies. I d like to thank all the CSA folks that came out and helped get our club opened at a moment s notice. I know it was a struggle to find folks on short notice. The club is looking better and we are in full operation with racing starting June 2. Junior sail camp is starting up June 9-14 th with the first Harbor mice starting June 23 rd. Get your kids signed up now!!! We have a pursuit Race this month on Saturday, June 9 th. We also have an all-member s party hosted by the Flying Scot Fleet on Sunday, June 23 rd. Just a few friendly reminders: *Definitely make a point to tie your boat securely to the trailer and your trailer securely to the ground. We have had some strong storms come through already that could have caused some problems. This is an important issue for you and your neighbor!!! *Put wheel chocks on both trailer wheels when storing your boat. *When using the launch ramp, please get your car and trailer in line before moving you boat to the courtesy dock. *Have fun and when you see new members, give them a nice welcome and any help they may need.

June Splinters From The Board Hello fellow sailors, From our May meeting here s what we can report: Our membership is doing well and our numbers are close to 2012 s. Thanks to Shirley Allen, we sold one of our Snipe s to a fellow in Wisconsin. The flood has delayed a few projects such as the new wiring for the pavilion. We re in the process of getting 3 bids to have the fixtures replaced on our 11 light poles. CYC needs to be informed that they have the Whale, now Sailing For Veterans Regatta, on the wrong weekend in September. This task was completed. Our hoists are fixed and ready to go for the season s opening thanks to the efforts of Jeff Melly and his crew. Director Bartman created and printed hundreds of tourist flyers that will be distributed throughout the region. Thanks to Joe for putting the creative effort into making this happen. A foundation tied to the Flying Scott Class has made a donation to our sailboat rental program in the way of funds earmarked for the purchase of a Flying Scot. Director Pitzer is on task of researching and finding a boat to purchase for the program. CSA s spring racing clinic will be rescheduled so please stay tuned. The Adult Sail Seminar has been rescheduled for July There are slots available for students so hurry and contact Director Leimbach. Also, instructor positions and volunteers are need. The Board approved a special Adult Sail Seminar scholarship to Kent Reperrda. Kent is the father of Aaron Reperrda, a US Marine from Lebanon, Illinois who was killed this spring while on a training exercise. Aaron, a few hours before he died, had ed a picture of a sailboat on Carlyle Lake that he wanted to buy so he and his dad could learn to sail. Kent and his family will be special guests at the Sailing For Veterans Regatta in September. In case you haven t heard, the Sailing For Veterans Regatta has been rescheduled to September We are waiting for a draft of our new lease from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Director s Beier and Folwell met with the IDNR folks a few weeks ago to begin the lease renewal process. New signs are coming to the hoists. Amazingly, those wooden with white and faded green lettered signs, most believe, are from the early 70 s. Finally, thank you to any and all volunteers who gave their time and energy, and continue to do so, during these trying flood times. As of this writing, the lake is back over the seawall, but only slightly, so racing and sailing goes on. Rick Bernstein Chairman of the Board

June When you re handed lemons, you re either going to sit and stare at them or make lemonade. Well we ve been handed lemons when it comes to rain and flooding and the hosting and subsequent postponement of the first annual Sailing for Veterans Regatta benefiting wounded veterans. Obviously we re not going to sit back and let this all go stale. In fact, there s a huge benefit to our cause: almost 4 months of additional promotion and fund raising which will only benefit our mission. A good question many ask is how can I help? or what can I do to raise money? First, a quick way to help raise awareness for the event is to buy our great merchandise. The Tervis mugs for hot and cold drinks look great and they re first class. Comes with a lid and they re life time guaranteed. They re in stock now so go to the website or go see Mary Bartman for one, or two!!!! This past weekend I saw the new ladies T s that have the cool logo in BLING BLING. I d call them sequins but that doesn t do them justice. Again, these are available in Mary s office for review and purchase. The embroidered coats are in, we re getting embroidered polos, hats, visors plus our custom designed wrist bands are in. So you see, you can help raise money for the event and start showing off our great merchandise which will only help spread the word about the regatta this September. The next way to help our mission to help wounded veterans is to send out an to your contact list with an explanation that you re fund raising for the Sailing For Veterans Regatta. They can send you the money; checks made out to the event s name, or send them to the website for instructions on how to donate. Kids can help and it s a great learning activity. Have them write a letter explaining what they re raising money for and take it to summer camps or walk the neighborhood or ask friends and family members. Another way to get more participation in the regatta is for your fleets to send reminders across the country to our sister clubs about the event. The regatta has been rescheduled for the second weekend in September which is normally for the Whale of a Sail. This year, as we did two years ago, we re combining the events to host one fantastic event. That year we had 133 boats and raised the most money ever for the LCR. Let s make a solid go of it this year and beat that year s total: $66,000. Thank you to all for helping create, promote and make this really worthwhile event happen. It takes commitment, desire, and hard work, dedication to the mission, trial and error and a lot of luck...but through our work the rewards will be great for those who have served our country and suffered injuries to help protect us. Rick Bernstein Regatta Chairman

June It is with great sadness that I report our Treasurer Dolores Swan has been forced to resign to care for her ailing husband Pat. I have only known them for a short while since I joined the fleet about 7 years ago, but both Pat and Dolores have been vital contributors to CSA and the Scots. Pat was, for many years, in charge of keeping the docks in shape, and he began the rebuild several years ago. His happy and kind presence was always evident. He was always willing to do anything asked of him. He loved sailing his Scot and regularly raced on Sundays with an easy going approach. He loved the camaraderie and was always a delight to be with. We wish him the best. Dolores and Pat Swan We cannot say enough about Dolores. She has been one of the anchors of the Fleet. She has always been the treasurer as far as anyone living can remember. She has also kept the CSA books. With a firm and organized hand she has kept things balanced and paid. And, whenever the Fleet had a Regatta she was the go to person for management of the food service. She knew where to get the best food at the best prices. She knew how to organize the preparation and service. She supported everyone in the Fleet and was a no nonsense commander when it came to getting good food out on time. She was always willing to do whatever was necessary to get the job done. We will have a tough time replacing her steady and reliable hand. Now all her energy will be focused on Pat and we wish her the best. The Scot Fleet recently received news that it has been awarded a grant of $1500 to purchase a Flying Scot that will be used in the CSA rental program. Jim Harris was responsible for using his inestimable influence with the FSSA organization to secure this grant. His application proved to be the key. The Fleet and CSA will partner up to close the deal and very soon the Rental Program will have a fine Scot. We are very excited to have accomplished this purchase and hope this new boat will attract new sailors to the Scot and to our Fleet. It s a win, win, and win for the Scot, the Fleet and CSA!! The Fleet also wants to extend a hearty thank you to Dr. Jacques Baenziger and his wife Nancy. When they found out about our initiative to put a Scot in the Rental Program they stepped up. They made their 1987 Scot, sail # 4268, available to CSA at a very nice discounted price. Their generosity was triggered by the many happy memories they have of sailing at CSA. They first joined in late 1987 and sailed at CSA regularly throughout the 80s and early 90s. They loved to day sail and really enjoyed the beauty of the lake and the quiet repast that CSA offered. As life became more complicated there was less time to sail and for the last 7 or so years their boat has been in storage. But now with a little soap and water it will be back on the lot for others to enjoy for years to come. Thank you Jacques and Nancy. Finally, we are happy to announce that our new fleet member Eric Sutton has agreed to take over the job as Treasurer for the Fleet. Thanks Eric. AND, mark your calendar for the EGYP- TIAN CUP which will be held on Labor Day weekend, August 31-September 1. Get on the line!! Mike Pitzer

June WOW-Women On the Water The WOW ladies recently made their second trip this spring; this time to the Midwest Women s Sailing Seminar in Milwaukee. It was all women with all women expert instructors. Jan Guthrie was the docking instructor. Jan has years of experience as USCG captain, cruising and racing extensively, and teaching classes and seminars. She owns and operates a yacht brokerage. The take away from Jan s class was, knowing your boat s pivot point and using a springline, a.k.a. warpline, to predictably control your boat. The springline is connected on one end to the boat s pivot point and the other to the shoreside, dock cleat, or piling pivot point. As the boat moves in gear a lever effect is created causing a rotation. It s an age old seagoing skill that is too often neglected by recreation boaters (Pisciotta, 2004). Some other tips from Jan - -Think of the keel as an indication of the direction the boat is able to move most easily. -Do NOT try to hold a boat with just your body! -Practice throwing lines over cleats and pilings. -Learn how your prop can turn your boat. Is it a left or right turn prop? -Listen and learn the sounds of your engine. Learn to hear what gear you are in and use neutral as your default gear. Additional references /links SeaSkillsSpringLinesColumnDIY.pdf -Use-Your-Boats-Pivot-Point&id= A 50 (15m) triple strand nylon line with whipped ends will work for CSA boats. This line has some stretch to it. Strong cleats are imperative as you don t want to blast the cleat like a missile. Never use a lifeline, stanchion, or deck rail for this process. The crew stays on the boat for the entire maneuver, with the line looped around the cleat, so they can control both ends. Practice, practice. Approach dead into the wind; loop the spring line around cleat or piling, then power either forward or backward against the line forcing the boat to rotate toward the dock through judicious rudder usage and a gentle hand on the throttle (p. 54).

June Hey, you want to go to a Luau? News and Notes The CSA Luau will be June 29 th, the same day as our open house. Tickets will be $15.00 per person. The meal will include Hawaiian Chicken and Island Pork, seasoned green beans, rice pilaf with almonds, summer salad with peppercorn dressing and fruit salad for dessert. All tickets must be pre-paid for by June 25 th. You can purchase tickets from me, Patti Davis, during weekend races before June 25 th. Alternatively, you can mail Patti your reservation and payment; she must receive it before June 25 th. You can or call me with any questions. My contact information is in the CSA membership roster. Aloha, Patti Davis Headline Visitors Day: 2013 Open House Saturday, June 29, is a most important day for CSA: Let's show the public how wonderful sailing is at CSA! This activity is a major source of new CSA members. To accomplish this, your participation is vital. Volunteers are needed to welcome our guests, show them around, assist in getting guests on and off boats, and to give sailboat rides. Please sign up by clicking on the attached link and participate in the Open House, and as a bonus, make your reservations to stay for the Luau and fireworks that evening. We would like a response from you ASAP. Any questions and suggestions, please contact Sebastian Bautz at , sebastian@bautz.com. Thank you. Sebastian Bautz Chair, Visitors Day

June Lightning Flashes few of the Lightning crew (John Folwell, Mike Reed and myself) were at Carlyle Lake yesterday, Friday, May 24, 2013, to help in getting the club ready for the season. Before Friday I could think of nothing new to report, as we have all anxiously been awaiting the start of the racing season, and thus something new for me to report. But now that the opening of the club is just around the corner, and with my personal observations of the condition of the club, there are some things that must be said. Firstly, and very importantly, the Mid- Continent and Mississippi Valley Lightning Championship Regatta is still scheduled for June 8 & 9, So, Lightning sailors lets support this regatta by preparing your crews and plan on a great sailing event. Mike Reed is still looking for helping hands in a number of duties. If you are available and can help, please contact him at mzreed@charter.net. We are planning on partying after the races on Saturday evening June 8, 2013, at the LuBar in Carlyle, IL. Right now Mike is planning on 8 Lightning crews and the race committee, for a total of approximately 32 people. He has reserved the front room at the LuBar for our pleasure. He and I checked the joint out yesterday and found it to be rustic, clean and the food was decent. The beer was particularly excellent, in frosty cold 20 oz. glasses. They have a great selection of beers as well as mixed drinks. We sure hope to see a good turnout for the Regatta. Plan on joining us! A Lastly: IMPORTANT SAFETY ALERT!!!!!!!!! While cleaning the club up after the floods, another issue dawned upon me that I wanted to pass along. The water level at Carlyle Lake has left much of the parking lot and the docks with a film of slime on these walking surfaces. We're talking mud, algae, and guano and a whole host of other contaminants. Have you ever heard the old adage "more slippery than whale snot"? Well, I can attest to the fact that mud, algae and guano are pretty darn slippery when they are wet. Power washing all of the walking surfaces at the club is simply not possible. There are and will be areas and small localized spots that may be slippery for some time to come. As a safety professional that focuses on pedestrian safety, it is the unexpected changes on walkway surfaces that concerns me, as it is the "unexpected" changes that cause people to fall. Whether it's an unexpected change in slip resistance of the surface, or an unexpected obstruction, these are factors that contribute to falls. And as we grow older, falls tend to hurt us more. Falls are 2nd (auto accidents are 1st) as the leading cause of death of persons 70 years of age and older. So, as we begin our season late this year, please proceed with care, and caution, as there are spots where unexpected conditions may be present on the parking lot and docks. You are all important people to our club, and we want to see you healthy and able bodied, until you can no longer pull the sheets, or longer... We hope to see you all on the race course soon! Be careful out there!!! Respectfully, Keith Vidal, P.E.

June Cat Tales Water, Water Everywhere I had not realized I was still the writer of these articles again this year. That s why I have not written anything. This will not be much of an article since the club has been closed as soon as it was opened (?) The Comet fleet is probably getting upset. They came to CSA to get away from the yearly flooding of the river and this is the second time we ve been flooded since they moved... Sorry guys. Plan to attend some of this year s activates. Something for everybody! 16 Carlyle Sailing Association Hazlet Park Road Carlyle, IL June Do You Know...what the original boat drink is that Jimmy Buffett sings about? The history behind the song Boat Drinks is that while spending a February in Boston, Jimmy was cold and wanted to go home. Rum and tonic was his antifreeze. Here is the recipe for the Original Boat Drink provided by Jimmy s sister, Lucy Anne Buffett, aka LuLu, from her book coauthored with Anastasia Arnold, Crazy Sista Cooking: Cuisine and Conversation, pg 76, Wimmer Cookbooks, For 1 drink: Fill a tall glass with ice. Pour in 2 ounces of Mount Gay rum, then top with a splash of tonic water. Garnish the top of the glass with a lime wedge. This is a simple and refreshing drink that is easy to make and can be a refreshing change from sweet soda and fruity drinks during those summer days on the water. Enjoy, Mr. Editor
