by David Crosby Another month has slipped on by. I hope things are going well at CSA. As an absentee Commodore I am quite out of touch so this monthly column will be lacking on CSA details. Megan and I, along with the rest of the crew of the Beneteau Oceanis 473, Esprit d Escales have safely arrived in the Azores. Our 20 day passage was uneventful. We skirted along the edge of the Azores High, so in reality had extremely calm seas and a perfect breeze. The wind for the better part of the trip was in the knot range. The highest we saw was 30 knots and that was a single gust. The highest sustained winds were around 25 knots. Instead of my going into great detail about the trip in these pages of the Marks of the Course, I have been keeping a daily blog which can be found at My blog is updated daily while at sea via sat phone. The owner/captain has also been keeping a blog, which is updated daily but posted when we arrive in port. This blog is available at We also have a boat tracking system, so you can follow along if you like. This is at Click on Current cruising boats, and then look for Esprit d Escales. Our departure date from the Azores is not yet firm, but I anticpate that we will be leaving on June 30th. Our destination is Oban, Scotland. This leg of the journey is expected to be cold and rough. The captain has prepared for numerous alternate destinations, so if iboattrack shows us going somewhere other than Oban, don t be alarmed it may just be a planned deviation. The overall goal of the permanent crew of this boat is to cruise England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales for the remainder of the summer. Where we actually make landfall is not critcial at this time. The one unfortunate bit of CSA news that I have received is that past members, Ray and Debbie Bunse were in a motorcycle accident. Debbie came out of it with some cuts, etc. but is otherwise OK. Ray on the other hand is in critical condition and the last I heard was hospitalized at St. John s. Please include Ray in your thoughts and prayers. I wish you all a fair breeze for the month of July. Happy Sailing! David Crosby Commodore Carlyle Sailing Association Photos by Bill Kesler on Visitor s Day 2

by Rick Bernstein Lights, rocks, contracts, and events these were the highlight discussions during our June Board Meeting. 1. Director Dewille reported all of our property lights have new parts that will make them turn off during the day and on during the night. Over the past several years we ve had trouble getting all of these fixtures to function due to various problems. Today we can report all is well. 2. Director Beier reported that the Corp of Engineers has started a project at CSA. The project involves laying down a rock drive towards the West end of our property where a high water ramp will be constructed. Members will notice this work underway as they drive towards the front gate of CSA. 3. Our great relationship with Carlyle Yacht Club is taking a more concrete step. Since CYC and CSA verbally agreed to a race committee boat rental agreement, it has been modified over the years. The board has put a written agreement together between the two clubs that will solidify our agreement going forward. 4. Since the last article, our club has hosted the Leukemia Cup Regatta, Visitor s Day, Adult Sailing Seminar and the Luau. Normally the Commodore would report on these but since he s out of the country, I d like to take a moment and comment on the above four events because for the first time, I either helped run and/or participated in all of them. a. The LCR thanks to the donation of CSA s facility and the hard work of dozens of volunteers from the four clubs on the lake, the regatta was a complete success. Although racing Saturday was cancelled on the one design course due to no wind, the evening s festivities, as it always does, made up for the lack of sailing. On Sunday the wind kicked in and racing was on. In the end, 85 boats and their fund raising efforts raised close to $40,000. Next year will be our 10th year running this great event. b. Each year our Visitor s Day takes place during the Lightning Districts so I ve never attended one. This year my family was able to attend and we had a blast. Taking 5 different groups sailing throughout the day in the Melges, what a great way to meet folks who have never stepped in a boat. The event was very well coordinated thanks to the efforts of Shirley Allen and this year s staff. I would recommend to all of you in the future to join this club event and just make it a day of taking fun people out on your boat and enjoy the commaraderie. A special thanks to Scott Zerban, my lifelong friend; his mainsail was in our boat, and I mistakenly used it w:) c. A great way to gauge the success of Visitors s Day is to see what happens to the attendees after. Given I taught at Dave Leimbach s Adult camp a few weeks ago, there were so many campers who I saw at Visitor s Day, which leads to this: The one-two punch of these two events has become a very good way for us to help promote and grow CSA. I commend Dave for his very well run event as throughout the 3 day camp, in very trying hot and light air conditions, I heard nothing but favorable comments stating how much fun folks were having. d. Relatively new CSA member, Ladanna Darks, was sort of thrown to the fire regarding running the Luau this year. With her mentor, Commodore Crosby being gone, Ladanna was left with coordinating with very little experience, as she later stated. Once the board learned this and begin spreading the need for help notifications, out came the fantastic volunteer spirit of CSA. In the end, Ladanna sold over 100 tickets to the event, the weather was great and the food was unforgettable. Congratulations Ladanna, you did absolutely great. In closing, the events of the past month and the way in which all of you run and manage them, along with the great participation from CSA members, I am so proud of our club. Even with our fearless leader gone sailing the seven seas, CSA didn t miss a beat taking care of what has been the most important; our club, our guests and our members. I toast every single one of you for a job VERY WELL DONE. Rick Bernstein Chairman of the Board Carlyle Sailing Association 3

Howdy, Fleetsters! I am so excited to see so many new faces on our Cat Field lately! There have been all kinds of random people just dropping in for daysailing, and we have recruited a few new members out of the crowd! I wonder if it is because Cats are affordable yachts for those that want to sail whereas anything larger or more complicated takes more of an investment in time and money. And anything smaller just simply doesn t go fast enough. So, therefore, we have the ideal sailboat for a good time, right?! I want to say a huge THANK YOU!! to everyone that helped take folks out on Cats during Visitor s Day! We had more Cats on the water than we have had in the past and perhaps that is another reason we have had so many new folks visiting our beach. Jim Disano gave a great show on his Hobie 17, screaming into the harbor with rooster tails flying off the rudders, probably to slow him down a bit as the wind was strong and coming right into the harbor mouth. Sue Dudek gave multiple rides to novice sailors as she tried out her new to her blue jib. How will we recognize her with a blue jib? Bob Monaghan practiced deep sea diving techniques, or was it playing at being a pelican, scooping up gobs of water but alas no fish. Dave Leimbach and Brock Tuffli tried to go out at the same time so they could sail side by side with their visitors thoroughly impressed (or scared) sailing so close to another boat at that speed. Typical! Russ Ammons helped by taking whole families out on his boat. Karen made one trip out of the harbor with a visitor but once the white caps started she assisted on shore. I also must mention the Cat sailors that lent a hand out in other ways: Dave Waugh and Latham Souther helped out on the E scows (Latham had trophy bruises to show off afterwards). Carol Galbraith and Pat O Donnell gave their all, and poor Josh and Heather (who had no idea what they were getting into) organized the food, passed the repast and cleaned up afterwards. Also a big round of applause to Shirley, for putting the whole thing together! by Holly Hoffman I have been doing some follow-up research in regards to the 33 rd America s Cup. The bad news is that they are apparently no longer entertaining the notion of multihulls for the event. On the other hand I was looking over the dimension requirements for the boats and Holy Cow! Do they look exciting! Check this out! The ACC Version 5.0 was the last design; the Class AC33 is the new design. The spinnaker area is limited only by sheeting constraints, not by measurement of dimensions. Isn t that crazy?! Remember, they are only allowed to use manual labor on those boats, so I guess, in theory, if they got enough purchase and enough strong guys the spinnaker could be the size of a small African country. Did you know that the America s Cup is the oldest active trophy in any international sport? Pretty cool, huh? On the out-of-town front, Joe Leonard was up at the Chicago NOOD this year. On Day 1 the crew warmed up with a 5 th and 6 th, Day 2 & 3 showed significant improvement with 3 bullets out of 4 races and an overall 2 nd place! They spend plenty of time on the lovely waters of Lake Michigan, waiting for the wind to fill in. Fortunately, the temperature was perfect and the sunshine on the ACC Version 5.0 Class AC33 Length overall 24.5m typical 26m maximum Length waterline 18-20m 26m maximum Beam 3.3m typical 4.8m maximum Draft 4.1m 5.0m Weight in measurement condition 24T 17.5T Mast height from sheerline 32.5m 33.6m Spinnaker area 512sqm maximum Unlimited Mainsail area 214sqm typical 225sqm maximum I from sheerline 26.1m 28.5m J 8.3m 10m Spinnaker tack from mast 11.6m (pole) 13.65m (to end of bowsprit) water was beautiful to watch. The boat that beat them (by a measly 2 points) had our very own Chris Stahl as one of its crew members! Mike Hill took a 3 rd up at the Lake Petenwell Regatta in Wisconsin. On Saturday morning there was no wind, so I got my workout by delivering boats to the raft. Once there were about 5 boats rafted together, all that sail area managed to find the little bit of wind left on the lake. Nothing like swimming a Cat to a moving target! The raft just kept getting further and further away! Whew! Zephyr - Warm, pleasant breeze. Named after the mythical Greek god of wishful thinking, false hopes, and unreliable forecasts. 4

by Betty Struckhoff Lots has been going on in June YUMMY POTLUCK A hot hot day at the lake is still better than a hot day just about anywhere else. One June 21, the summer solstice, we waited and waited in the shade for the wind to come up. Somehow our race committee managed to eke out a short afternoon race and we made it back to harbor without hauling out a paddle. But then, as the coals were heating up for our first Sunday potluck of the summer, the sky darkened in the northwest. The storm literally blew by us around the north side of the lake while it dropped a few welcome sprinkles and cooled the air significantly. The breeze continued throughout our eating and chattering under the picnic pavilion a perfect evening. The food was yummy! The only downside -- we had taken our boat out of the water when the storm threatened. It would have been a perfect evening for a sail. EGYPTIAN CUP As usual, the visitors showed up the locals in the Egyptian Cup, May But when you have the boat builder and a sail maker in the mix, what can you expect? We enjoyed some great competition, even better partying, and were happy to give the first place trophy to Ryan Malmgrem and Carrie Carpenter for the second year running. Stiff breezes on Saturday kept some folks on shore. Two more races on Sunday morning made for a five-race regatta and sent everyone home happy. Thanks much to our race committee Ted, Jeanette, John, Peg, Heinz, Cal and Bill. Check out the great photos, compliments of Cal, on the fleet website. HOMECOMING We celebrated the Saturday evening of the Egyptian Cup with some Fleet 83 Alumni. It was great to see the Moores, Waibels and Cooks. Since Kathy Cook had a conflict she visited virtually by cell phone with folks eating and drinking on the lakeshore, then stopped by for lunch on Sunday to say Hi in person. Thanks for coming, guys, and we hope you enjoyed Greg and Melissa s feast as much as we did. (Alumni update: Paul Moore is recovering nicely from knee replacement surgery.) CRACK OVER CARLYLE It took some dedicated sailors to give boat rides on Visitors Day in winds of 15 mph plus. Mary Bartman said it wasn t Moon over Miami but Crack over Carlyle when a Scot crew dropped his water-logged drawers while docking. Reportedly the two women guests on board appreciated the show. It was a great day to showcase CSA, but you didn t have to go that far, Pat. KIDS ON THE TILLER Your scribe and her skipper had a ball on June 14 hosting the winners of the Day of Sailing and a Cookout that CSA raffled off at Scott Air Force Base. Two young couples, the husbands both meteorologists no less, and three small children had a great afternoon. The oldest child, all of five, was a natural on the tiller and would have spent all day and night on the boat. Thanks, Karen Pauls, for contributing a Cat ride to the mix. Let s hope this becomes a part of building more awareness of what Carlyle Lake has to offer among the thousands of military and civilian employees at Scott. WELCOME ROBB AND HANNAH Our newest members of the fleet are no strangers to the club. Robb and Hannah Preston are buying Bill Vogler s very fast FS Robb was a collegiate sailor and has been crewing for Bill, sometimes with Hannah too, since last summer. Hannah says they won t be ready to approach the starting line for a while. I don t believe a word of it. Welcome to Fleet 83! And don t worry; we ll be seeing Bill in a brand new boat he will pick up at the Midwest Districts in Delaven, July JUNIOR SAILING The trophy for most grandkids at Junior Sailing Camp will probably be retired after the Fogarty brood makes it through these years. Was it seven for 09? The two Schneiderjohn boys were also sailing this year. Hope to see you soon out on the water. As this goes to press, Flying Scot skippers are heading to the lake to participate in the Adult Learn to Sail seminar. In July, some of us will be motoring to the Districts at Lake Delaven. Always a great group of people and a fun party. Mark your calendar for the next Sunday evening potluck on July 26. See you at the lake! Check out the Scottlebutt pictures on page 8 5

by Felicia Bamer Rides were abundant on Visitors Day June 6. Oh, I did not write everyone down to remember who was out there. The day had a variety of winds. I spent the day seeing smiling visitor faces as well as interesting situations in the Whaler. New sailors have come from our Visitor Days. Tradewinds Yacht Club was invaded by Denny and Shara Taylor, Rich and Sharon Pendl, and Dave Leimbach and Linda for the weekend of the Tradewinds Yacht Club Commodore s Cup (June 13). They met new friends bugs. Saturday somehow the TYC Race Committee had an entire Olympic Modified Race. Winning the Second Place Trophy in the First Division was the Chuck and Marge Alyea. And, Linda Tatem and I won the Third Place Trophy in the Second Division missing second place by 19 seconds after racing almost 2 ½ hours. Let s see we drifted and drifted and drifted, then a storm came, the end of the run to the leeward mark became a beat and the beat became a run before the finish by drifting and drifting. Division 2 had hard pouring rain. Chuck and Marge had no rain. Caryle Yacht Club s Commodore Cup on June 20 was postponed to July 11 after sitting in a mirrored lake across from the Junior Firecracker Regatta. The Luau and Fireworks and second Hare and Hound and will be history prior to the printing of the Marks. BIGGEST EVENT OF THE SEASON Saturday, July 18 BANJO! CSAers only know one Banjo Player. I heard through the grapevine he is coming. After the CSA Championship of Champions Regatta and the 3 rd Hare and Hound is the Barbeque Cookout and Banjo Celebration around a Camp Fire! Then Sunday Morning, the 19 th, is the Annual Cabin Fleet Breakfast. Aeolus (Felicia Bamer) Photos by Bill Kesler 6

Visitor s Day by Shirley Allen Visitor s Day 2009 got some help from Mother Nature in the way of a bright sunny day with lots of wind. Although we had a smaller guest list than usual, about 120, I think we wowed them. We had a total of 30 skippers, some with crew, available to give rides, including cabins, Y s E s, Flying Scots, Lightnings, five varieties of catamarans and one Melges. Our skippers were young, old, big, little, adventurous and some who said the wind was too much. We had one capsize and everyone was OK. Does it get more diverse than that? How could sailing not be for everyone? In addition to skippers, there were 22 ground crew, not as glamorous, but still a necessary part of the whole picture. The number of guests was down probably because of two things: The Post Dispatch did not pick up our press release, as they have always done. We postponed opening registration up to the public in hopes that the member invites would produce large numbers of guests. Where did our visitors come from? 42% invitations or member referrals 22% posted flyers 18% web site 10% newspapers 7% groups that we contacted The results so far have been two catamarans that have already joined as a direct result of Visitor s Day. A crew list of 10 posted on the web and I noticed that few skippers were collecting their own crew lists. Clever. We also filled adult camp. It seemed to me that the visitors were more enthusiastic than in years past. This event is a large undertaking involving many members. I am putting together some suggestions for next year, one of which will be to combine Visitor s Day with the Luau next year, as we discussed at a couple of meetings over the winter. If anyone has any suggestions, I would be glad to include them. I want to give a huge thanks to everyone that helped with this event. I hesitate to name names, as I will inadvertently leave someone off. I do want to mention Norm Karl, who handles registration and press releases, Bill Kesler who created the flyers, Betty Struckhoff, CSA s publicity chairperson who helped with promotion and planning and Josh Doherty for heading the food committee. Another 50 volunteers gave boat rides or tours or supported the skippers and food committee. This event is a huge effort for CSA.vv I hope to see a corresponding huge payoff for us. 10 The Gatekeeper by Mary Bartman As I open the gate today... It has been Hot Hot Hot as you all know and little wind on the weekends. When did we start to allow August weather in June. You know that on Sunday nights when you all leave the wind tends to pick up and we have good sailing. Lots of things happened at the club last month and something very strange happened on Visitor s Day. We had a full moon that night and I heard through secret sources that another moon appeared on the docks in broad daylight (no names revealed here but you know who you are). Someone accidentally put on a good show for one of our visitors and got thanked for it. You never know what you will see around the club. I had a couple of car adventures too. Cliffy gave me a ride in his awesome blue car and when we were tooling around the park we got stopped by the conservation police for going too fast. Even though there is no speed limit posted where we were driving. Cliff got off with a verbal warning. kay sera sera. Then Jim D made the mistake of telling me his keys were in his souped up hot red sports car so I took it for a drive. Unfortunately I haven t driven a stick in sometime and it was a little bit of a jerky ride, a girl has to get in a little mischief once in a while. Ya know what I mean. I am now closing the gate. TTFN Just a gentle reminder that if you or your guests are spending the night here at CSA you should be sleeping on your boat in the water. Please do not sleep in your vehicles on the grounds. Thank you. Photos by Felicia Bamer 10

Firecracker Classic Light Air Again!???! by Felicia Bamer After a week (Junior Sail Camp) of enjoying sailing with winds, our Juniors found Firecracker Saturday a tremendous challenge. Twenty-five juniors competed in the 2009 event. In light air a well rested Ian Moriarty (he just returned from France) shot off the Laser starting line and led race 1. Newly certified US Sailing Instructors Caleb Leonard and Bryan Burke sailed fast in light air to finish 2 nd and 3 rd. Alli Lacker and Ryan Felter again sailed ahead of other Optis and finished in that order. A Second race was started and abandoned after the wind changed direction twice and then died for a tow into the Harbor. John Sepanski served as Principal Race Officer. After lunch and some of the Lasers and Optis were packed away, a challenging light air race occurred just outside the harbor mouth. Ian again sailed away, and Jack Fogarty did his light air race for a 2 nd. Therefore, Caleb and Bryan both ended up with 6 points for the regatta. I apologize Caleb. So the Firecracker Classic Laser Radial trophy winners are First Ian, Second Caleb, Third Bryan, and Fourth Jack Fogarty. Jacob Bernstein won the Opti Race followed by Alli and Third Sarah Schott. The Opti Intermediate Trophy winners were First Alli, Second Jacob and Third Ryan. The Top Finishing Opti Beginner with two 4ths was Connor Felter who won the top place trophy. (His cap was signed by Dennis Connor in San Diego last month.) Congratulations to all of the 25 competitors. Felicia Bamer P.S.: An incredible amount of hard hard work happened during Junior Sail Camp. I wish to thank Terri Crosby, Laura Severson, Donna Schott, Ann Lacker, Brian Bild, Bill Fogarty, Kathy Ratliff. Also, Thanks to the on water crowd of Edd Burke, Caleb Leonard, Bryan Burke, Alex Severson, John Sepanski, Shirley Allen, Shirley Bild, Heinz Dutt, Bill Bertrand, Jerry, Richard Felter. I wish to also thank each and every person who has donated to CYSS to make it possible to have Laser Radial rigs, Optimist Dinghys, and Snipes for our future. Many of our CJSA Juniors today are 3 rd and 4 th generation sailors. 15 The Cruising Race of June 28 by Ted Beier Thanks go to Bill Kesler for the Visitor Day photos. Pat O Donnell has a link to her photos on our web site csa-sailing.org Our first attempt at having a cruising race seemed to be a success based on the comments of the participants. There was enough wind to make it a challenge and provide for a good ride, although everyone that finished did so in a shorter time than intended. At least 28 boats started, which is more than on most regular Sunday races. Much was learned in running such an event, which should make things better next time. On the short course, the first to finish overall was Dan Haile in the only Y Flyer sailing. Where were the rest of you? Second and third positions overall on this course went to Flying Scots Felicia Bamer and Bill Clark. The third Scot to finish was Tom Baker. Dan Moriarty was the first Lightning to finish, and fourth overall, followed by Terry Burke and John Folwell. The Scots chose to sail without spinnakers, and thus started at their non spinnaker time, which was a clever (or lucky?) thing to do as the wind backed into the northwest enough to preclude using spinnakers on this course. Had the Lightnings done the same, they would have claimed the top overall spots. On the long course, all of the overall top spots went to cats with Brock Tuffle, first; Latham Souther, second; and Dave Leimbach, third. Few monohulls sailed this course, and the first to finish among them were Cal Guthrie and Joel McKell sailing Joel s San Juan 21. There was one mystery boat that signed in after the race, who identified themselves an IM with a sail No. 40. We have no idea who that is. There were prizes for this event, but it got too late to gather the group and give them out. We will do that when we do the cruising format again on 6 September. Other changes that we will make include: (1) starting one hour earlier, (2) have only one start time for each class, and (3) having everyone fill out an entry sheet (seems the cats change sail numbers more often than Elizabeth Taylor changes husbands). If you have other suggestions, let me hear them. All finishes will be posted on the website as soon as the remaining mysteries are resolved. 15
