Commentary by the Commodore This will be my last article written for the Fore N Aft and the last as your Commodore. It has been a fascinating and fun year.

3 Commentary by the Commodore This will be my last article written for the Fore N Aft and the last as your Commodore. It has been a fascinating and fun year. Challenges have been met and extraordinary things accomplished! All with the support and time of the members and many volunteers! Thanks to all of you for a great year! [and thanks to you for being a great commodore, ed] And it is not over! The last race of the Two Harbor Fall Series is December 3rd, AYC has the lead on this one and the awards will be given out at their club! Also on the 3rd is my annual jewelry boutique! On December 17th the Ventura Harbor's Parade of Lights will be held. It is an informal pot luck event, and if you come please bring a something to share. It was pouring rain last year so let's hope for pleasant weather this year! New Year's Eve celebration will be the Ventura Marina Mobile Home Park. They have great food, a lovely venue, and music by DJ John Thawley! It is moderately priced. Your invitation will be ed soon with further details. Reservations are a must! Finally, please reserve the night of January 28, 2012 for the Change of Command dinner and ceremony! More details will be forthcoming. It is in the early stages of planning so if you would like to help please let me know! I know that 2012 will be a successful year under the stewardship of Rick Lunsford as Commodore, Jim Lavagnino as Vice Commodore and Larry McGrath as Rear Commodore. As well the Board of Directors includes 2 previous directors, Jamie Clark and Dale Pelka; and 2 new directors, Mike Hopper and Lynne Nelson who are knowledgeable people with the best interests of the club in mind. 4 From the Vice Commodore I'm a little late in writing this article because of issues with my internet but let's give it a shot anyway. I'm presently neck deep in the politics of running a yacht club [PBYC?, ed] and I'm swamped at work plus it seems as if everything is breaking on the boat all at once. Murphy is a persistent individual I tell you. He is never far off. Well it looks like the new bridge and board are pretty much decided on. I look forward in working with each and every one of you throughout the year. This year may be a tough one but as long as we run a tight ship things should go well. I just want to take this chance to remind all of you that when you use the club, please insure all of the doors are tightly closed and locked. The front door was found to be slightly ajar the day after Thanksgiving and therefore not locked. Please be sure we stay locked up! If I don't see all of you before the Christmas holidays please have a safe and Merry Christmas. Rick Lunsford PBYC Vice Commodore

5 View From The Rear Well fellow PBYC members, I believe this is my last column submitted as your Rear Commodore. I'm hoping Vice will be nice. [I hear it can be, ed] As I write this column, it is the day before Thanksgiving and I am preparing for the road trip to spend the day with my sister and her family in Northern California. I ask you; Where does Southern (CA) end and Northern begin? If you look at a map (OK chart) of California you'll see that the San Luis Obispo-Monterey County line (I call it the SLO-MO line) is a flawless straight one and continues as such between Kings, Tulare and Inyo Counties to the north and Kern and San Bernardino Counties to the south. If California were to split, that line would seem the ideal option to me. I'm a northerner by birth but a southerner by choice. In a little more than 3 weeks is the Winter Solstice, then the days will star getting longer again. Longer days lead to better sailing opportunities, once the Santa Anas have run their course. I can recall great sailing conditions in January one recent year. I'd like to see that again. Cards on the table time: Due to the other irons in the fire I currently have, I will no longer be able to continue as Club Photographer designate. [thanks for all the pictures, ed] I may be able to show up at some races with my Nikon but not most of them. So the designated position is now open and I encourage anybody with a camera to give it a try. 11 Notes from the Editor Where has the year gone? Seems like Cindy was getting sworn in yesterday. And in a few weeks we ll have a new Commodore. I know I speak for many when I extend my thanks to Cindy and the rest of officers, and all the volunteers that keep PBYC clicking along. A personal thanks for all the races, and after race refreshments as well. As Cindy mentioned, the last race of the year is Saturday, and Afterburner sits in her slip broken, waiting for parts to arrive from Australia. A 25 year old boat breaks a lot. We wore out the main traveler car in the last race, lost most of the balls and got it stuck to the track pretty good. Corrosion prevented removing the track end caps, so we cut them off. If the parts arrive we ll be back in business in minutes. If. We also overloaded the new jib traveler in the strong winds, and began grinding flats in her balls. Double cars are next, along with new balls, and these parts are in. But not the main traveler. I think we may miss a race. On a personal note, I tend to overdo my hobbies. For example, most people don t need a 52 racing catamaran to enjoy sailboat racing. My other hobby is wine. Normal people are content buying their wine in a bottle. But no, I couldn t stop there. So now I own a small vineyard in Paso Robles. 7 acres of grapes to call my own. I m not going to become a farmer or make wine. Nor am I moving to Paso any time soon. But I have all these extra non-race weekends I can spend in wine country. If you happen to be in Paso Robles next year, drop me an and maybe you can visit. I should have the local hot tips by then. As editor of the Fore and Aft, it is my duty to remind you each year, that I write very little of this newsletter. I edit, I don t write. I also don t take pictures. Writing and pictures come from all of you. Starting with the officers, each of whom have a column. The Race chairs have a column [hmm... oddly missing this month, ed]. Su Countess frequently volunteers a column. And you can too. Or at least take a photo and it to me.
