From the Commodore If you missed the Halloween party then you missed a really great social event. It was good to have so many guests from AYC. As for costumes, we had it all, from the weird to the wonderful and everything in between. The food was excellent, good music, and the Hurricane drinks went down as fast as we could serve them. Again thanks go to Lynne, Tom, Cindi, Robin and all the other members that chipped in and made it happen. Look out for more of these great social events in the next few months. Once again we had a strong turnout of PBYC boats at Caregivers Sailathon. As a result we get to retain the ugly fish award for another year. Thanks to all for the effort to make it happen for a great cause. At the October General meeting our newest member Rob Kobrin [another multihuller, ed] picked the member name from the Blue Ball of Happiness and once again the person drawn was not present so it now rolls over to $75 for the next meeting, you have to be there to win. Speaking of members, it is time to renew your membership, I am pleased that we have had such a large number of members renew this far, it is very encouraging indeed. If you have not renewed yet, now is the time. Also last month we made some upgrades to the club so you see, some you don't like replacing the rain gutter and down spout on the North end of the deck, however you can see the new floor tiles around the coffee machine and behind the bar area. General feedback is it looks great. My theme for the rest of the year is MEMBERSHIP so do all you can to encourage those prospective members out there to join. Remember next meeting is November 20th and the BBQ. Gerald Davies PBYC Commodore
From the Vice Commodore October seems to have been a jammed packed month of terrific activities at PBYC! The first race of the Fall Series kicked off the activities on October 9th! This marked the transition of Race Chairs. Richard Countess has retired from this position and John Thawley [3 cheers for John, and thanks to Richard for all the great races, ed] will be the new Race Chair beginning January. John set the race course which was obviously short because racers finished before dark with Afterburner's crew sailed into the club about 2 hours after the start [we were hungry, ed]. All racers were treated to chili dogs with all the fixings to celebrate the finish! [thanks, ed] On October 10th the Caregivers Sailathon was held and hosted by PBYC. The day began with the Skipper's Meeting chaired by member, Andy Killion. The weather prediction was for no or little wind. Not to be deterred, 12 boats/canoes from PBYC entered the fray. Happily our club won the Fish trophy, which we have won the last few years. On a personal note, I was a guest on Afterburner! Words fail to describe the excitement of riding on this really cool and very fast boat! It was absolutely too much fun. I was soaked and still giggling! There is a video which I took on YouTube, go to Afterburner Catamaran Giggle to see it! I wish I could learn to crew on this boat so I could ride on it more. Alas! That probably won't happen! [Cindi was great!, ed] I had the excellent opportunity to meet a favorite author! My friend and I drove to La Jolla to meet Vicki Myron who wrote Dewey, The Cat Who Touched the World. It is a cat story; also it is a story of Spencer, Iowa and the author. It was one of those books that really touched me and so I became a great fan! John and I visited the library where Dewey lived the summer of 2009! I really enjoyed this experience! I would recommend this book to everyone! The Board and General Meetings with dinner were on October 23rd! I think everyone enjoyed the roasted chicken dinner prepared by yours truly with the great assistance of Carol Davies! Our Commodore, Gerald, was awarded the Golden Prop for getting the tile behind the bar replaced, the gutters outside fixed and belatedly for getting our club phone in working order! A well deserved honor! Congratulations, Gerald! The ghoulishly and fantastically costumed guests at the club Halloween Party feasted and danced the night away. Our own DJ John Thawley played dance tunes throughout the night, while Lynne Nelson prepared the feast (as well as organizing this successful party) of New Orleans style food and drink! Thanks to Lynne and John for a very fun party. Special thanks to Robin Whyte for decorations which turned the club into a haunted club. Whose idea was the body parts candy, very weird stuff! And thanks to Sheryl Lunsford who also helped with organizing, making cool costume certificates! Congratulations to Sheryl, fortune teller, who won the Best Costume prize, Randy Alcorn (AYC), vampire (with real real teeth) for the Scariest
Costume, and the Underwoods (AYC), Popeye and Olive Oil, as Cutest Costumed Couple. Most of the partiers were in costume and it was fun to see the originality! It was great to see club members dancing away the night and I would really like to see more of our members participate in the various activities the club sponsors! So all of you wall flowers start coming out to get to know fellow club members and enjoy the hospitality the club members work hard to provide. Begin with the next General Meeting on November 20th at which your 2011 officers will be elected. See you at the Club! Cindi Mathieu PBYC Vice Commodore PS: Correction to last month's Fore N Aft: John Thawley was indeed awarded the Golden Prop for organizing the very successful club team for the Ventura Cup! [congratulations John, ed]
View From The Rear As a powerboat member of PBYC, all I can think about this time of year is the great fishing we have right off our coast. The end of the season is rapidly approaching and those of you with that angler blood coursing through your veins need to get down here and get some of this action! Activity over these past two weeks proves it is not too late for anglers to target halibut, as bounce-balling has been effective at Gaviota, Goleta, Padero Lane and below Point Mugu. Drifters have scored on the Ventura Flats and near Rock Island. At the Channel Islands, catches have come from Prisoners Harbor, Smugglers, Christy's, Bechers Bay, Eagles Nest, and Simonton Cove. Certain halibut hotspots are giving up a few white seabass as well, with the island spots outperforming the coastal spots as opposed to a couple of weeks back when coastal spots were the go-to places for gray ghosts. Fish are showing a preference for bigger baits, so pick out a large sardine or jig up a small- to medium-size mackerel. At the islands, live or fresh dead squid makes a superior bait because the fish have been feeding on squid during sporadic squid spawns. Finding a steady supply of squid to jig has been difficult, yet live squirts have accounted for more seabass than fresh dead squid or finfish baits at the islands. When live squid isn't available, most folks have been switching to halibut drifting and still manage an occasional white seabass. Ventura and Santa Barbara's harbor entrances have been experiencing decent morning halibut and white seabass bites, making float tubers, kayakers and skiff anglers very happy. Sand bass are providing some variety for anglers targeting shallow and mid-depth structures along the coast. This is a welcome addition to the usual chocolate bass, sugar bass and johnny bass menu for commonly fished areas near Ventura and Santa Barbara county harbors. Medium-size sardines on dropper-loop rigs have accounted for a majority of the sandies, however, green and light-brown swimbaits have also been effective. Rick Lunsford PBYC Rear Commodore
Race Report Richard Countess TWO HARBOR FALL SERIES The first two races of this series co-hosted with Anacapa Yacht Club were th rd th held on October 9 and 23. AYC hosts the third race on November 13 and we host the final race on December 4th. Assisting Susan and me on Symphony for Race #1 were Genie Pang, John Thawley and Jim Lavagnino. George had several of his canoe club buddies help finish boats and Cindi prepared chili dogs and dessert for the post race festivities. We had steady winds with all boats finishing in near record time and some very close corrected finish times. Bill Gibb's Afterburner nearly horizoned the 17 boats entered in the race completing their 14.5 nm course in 1 hour 27.8 minutes. Rival, a J-35 skippered by Dave Boatner, was the fastest monohull boat sailing the same 14.5 nm course with an elapsed time of 2 hours 18.3 minutes. The top three boats in the spinnaker fleet were Angry Hillbillies, an Olson 30 skippered by Deke Klatt and Paul Moore, Rival, and then XS, a Mull 30 sailed by Gene and Geno Beville just 17 seconds behind Rival. The top three boats in the non-spinnaker fleet that sailed a 9.9 nm course were Brent Swanson's Islander 29 Velero, Mike Leary's J-30 Pangea, and Randy Alcorn's Cal 29 Out Patient. For Race #2 AYC gave the spinnaker fleet and the lone ORCA boat (Afterburner was side-lined with jib traveler problems [damaged in Caregivers, ed] and No Regrets failed to get to the start line due to engine problems) a 17.5 nm course around platform Gilda and the non-spinnaker fleet a 11 nm course around Fishsticks. The top three boats in the spinnaker fleet were Angry Hillbillies, Rival and XS while the top three boats in the non-spinnaker fleet were Out Patient, Chris Johnston's Catalina 27 Breezy, and Velero. The corrected finish times for the first two races are presented below. For the series, Angry Hillbillies leads Rival by 2 points in the spinnaker fleet, Out Patient leads Velero by 2 points in the nonspinnaker fleet, and Itchy leads Afterburner by one point in the ORCA fleet. 14 Su s Tidbits I know I say this every year, but this is my favorite time for being PBYC's Records Administrator (the person who collects the dues). I enjoy the notes some of our members send with their checks, especially those from folks we don't often see. We got a note from Bill Williams. He and Joyce were married in October. Welcome to PBYC, Joyce. Several members are off to new adventures: the Buckinghams to the Pacific Northwest, the Wallmans to Mexico, and the Ottevangers to Florida. Happy sails to you. Even though dues are not due until November 1st, we've already collected from 15 members and some have included a donation to RBOC. Thank you. The imaginary prize for first to pay is a three-way tie between Tom and Nancy Roland, John Thawley and Cindi Mathieu, and Laura Schlessinger and Lewis Bishop. I had so much fun at the Caregivers Sailathon that I could barely move afterward. After a glassy start we clocked 22 knots of wind (not boat speed, Bill). It was a lot of work keeping SYMPHONY on her feet. Verne Haller mastered our huge main while Genie Pang and Jim Lavagnino helped Richard with sail trim. Nine laps was a record for us. RAGE (Tom Roland) was in her glory in that much wind. What a gorgeous sight! New member, Rob Kobrin, sailed his trimaran, George got three outriggers out, the Greers motored the TAMI LU, then there were CAROLINE with the Lunsfords aboard, and AFTERBURNER, and Here's a question for Brian Kerr (J-92) and Mike Hopper (J-22). Do all J boats come with giant American flags? PERFECT (J-100) flew hers and SYMPHONY (J-32) hers. I actually amputated about 6 inches of SYMPHONY's flag to prevent it from dragging in the water. Once again Staff Commodore Judy Nolde donated $100 for each PBYC boat and we had a bunch of boats enough to win the Ugly Fish trophy again. I hope Caregivers netted a bunch of money as well. This just in from the Ottevangers: ANCHOR CHAIN FOR SALE feet of 5/16 high test galvanized, some rust at ends, most in good condition $ Here's some news from members Randy & Gina Thomas aboard BALENA, their Endeavor We continue to have a great time exploring the Sea of Cortez. This year we spent several months in La Paz installing an electric windlass, which turned out to be a HUGE job. I also got to swim with dolphins and commune with a whale shark from our dinghy. Randy adds to his network of friends wherever we go.

Notes from the Editor As you have already read, Fall Series #1 was short, but fun. And Caregivers had more wind than anyone expected, also fun, to a point. The last laps were a bit too much wind for fun. Our day started with a sticky main. We always have trouble raising it, so we just pulled harder. A few minutes later we noticed a batten without a car. We sent Shaun up the mast to find a screw had backed out of the sail track, jammed a car, and we had broken it off. No worries, we remove the batten and car and head to the start where there is a huge wind hole. They had to let everyone turn their motors on to get to the wind line, 100 away. Weird. For us it was a close reach, a bear away to a downwind leg, then a close reach to the start line again. Not really enough time to sheet in. We just kept going faster, topping 25 knots I think. As the wind built we continued to depower (ease sheets), and started having ever more trouble tacking after the start line, especially the last few laps. You see, with loose sheets going into the tack we had no time to sheet in & head up, before the beach. So we blew a few tacks where we had to back down to complete them. A couple tacks we had to do over completely, which is nervous time as you drift down on the pier in 25+ TWS. Somewhere along the way we buckled our jib traveler track from excessive jib loads, we should have downsized the jib, but with 2 minute legs who change a sail? Parts are on order and we ll be fixed soon. Other boats had adventures like a dismasting and a damaging collision, so I won t complain. All part of the adventure we call sailing. Your Editor, Bill Gibbs The Fore N Aft Club As usual you are invited to my Bill s Wine Sunday November 21, as I bartend that Sunday.
