Has it been an April 2013 already? Last night (26 April) I attended the seminar given by Ventura Isle Marina. The local Coast Guard Auxiliary gave a presentation which title went somewhere along the lines of What To Do If the Skipper Becomes Incapacitated. Being a skipper in my own right as well as an ex-coastie (and let's not forget the free food) I went to attend. It was enjoyable and informative. There with me to represent PBYC were the Countesses and Dorothy Adriansen. When the seminar began there were 4 PBYC members present, when the night was over, the number increased to 5. We now welcome Ed Morris to our club, bringing our member roster up to 40. A good sign indeed. May begins our fabulous, fantastic, far-out Island Series, with the Hardway race scheduled for 18 May and co-hosted by our friends at the Santa Barbara Sailing Club. Fliers and posters have been distributed, so here's to hoping for great turnouts and agreeable weather. Last night (Saturday the 27th) was something new, for me at least; a Board Meeting NOT followed by a General Meeting. Understand it was a busy weekend for some people. One example: Jim Adriansen, one of our directors, was racing aboard OUT PATIENT in the Newport Ensenada Race [go Jim, ed]. Thankfully we achieved a quorum and were able to get some things done. Once we adjourned, that was it, we all departed. Speaking of getting things done, thanks to the efforts of Steve White and Gerald Davies, our Beer Cooler is back in operation. The evening before it felt somewhat awkward serving White Wine at room temperature. I couldn't help but notice that Saturday Evening's Bartender had on one her fingers a new, shiny article of Costume Jewelry as well. [not sure I understand, ed] A little sailing music Sam, AND AWAY WE GO!!!* * Apologies to Jackie Gleason. Commentary by the Commodore James Lavagnino PBYC Commodore
View From The Rear It is hard to believe it is already May. Opening day was such a great time to be at PBYC. Fortunately, the beer cooler compressor did not fail until after the big day. Many thanks to Robin, Steve and Gerald for fixing it and saving the club almost a thousand dollars and just in time for the Island series! I am out of town almost all of May and will miss the Hardway race [me too, ed] much to my dismay. I had hoped to race with Chuck and participate in a race instead of just the race committee. Guess I'll have to wait a little longer. Congratulations Bill and the Afterburner crew on the big win at N2E! I hope the editor will put a view from the rear of that sports car in this column [6-8 months to wait I m afraid, ed]. A picture always speaks more than anything I can say. I have no words to thank you for the tremendous honor of receiving the founders award. To know that ones efforts truly make a difference in the lives of others is such a gift. All I can say is the feeling is mutual. My life would not be the same without my friends at PBYC. Judy Nolde PBYC Rear Commodore
Race Report Richard Countess HARDWAY RACE The 33rd Annual Hardway Race co-hosted by PBYC and the Santa Barbara Sailing Club on May 18 (see the Notice of Race elsewhere in the Fore 'n' Aft) is the first of three races in PBYC's 14th Annual Island Series. The other two races in this series are the Milt Ingram Trophy Race on July 13th and the Tri-Point Ocean Race on August 17th. The Hardway Race is part of the Association of Santa Barbara Channel Yacht Club's High Point Series. ASBCYC presents very impressive trophies at the opening days for the first through third place winners in the standings as well as the skipper of the top boat from a yacht club at each of the three harbors. For 2012, Mike Hopper was the second place winner over-all and skipper of the top boat for a yacht club in Ventura Harbor. As always, we need help for Hardway. Bob Blackmon has offered his motorhome for the finish line and Bob Shirley has volunteered for a late night/early morning shift. We need more finish line help. Lisa Hopper will be providing after race food for the hungry hoards and I'm sure she can use help as well. Please let me know if you can help rcountess@aol.com, MISCELLANEOUS Are we going to have to build another trophy cabinet to hold all of Bill Gibb's trophies from this year's Newport to Ensenada Race? Tommy Bahama Trophy for First Over-all in all classes (PHRF and Multihull), First Multihull on Corrected Time, 2nd Place Elapsed, 1st Catamaran on Corrected time. Way to go to Bill and crew! Congratulations to Mike Hopper for his second place finish on MAGIC DRAGON in VYC's PHRF Regatta held on April 20th as well as his second place standing in the County's High Point Series (with 29 points, just behind Deke Klatt's JADED with 34 points) and his fourth place standing in the Association's High Point Series. We are happy to see Verne Haller back on the water racing 'Я' ESCAPE. UP-COMING LOCAL RACES May 1 VYC's Wet Wednesday (May 1 Sept 25) May 4 AYC's Anacapa to Port (Anacapa #1) May 11 PCYC's Pac Cor Cup #2 and VCORC Random Leg May PBYC/SBSC's Hardway Race (Island Series #1 and Wilson Series#1) June 1 CIYC's Bob Cooke Memorial Double Handed Race June 2 VYC's Governor's Cup (Random Leg) June 15 AYC's Platform A Race (Anacapaa Race #1) June 22/23 PCYC's Pac Cor Cup #3 (Yachting Cup: Windward/Leeward) June 29 VSC's Frenchy's Rum Run June 29 CIYC's Channel Islands to Marina del Rey
Su s Tidbits I know it's Spring. The Canada geese here on the lake are busy showing off this year's crop of goslings. Our roses are prolific with first bloom as is my athlete's foot [yuch, ed]. WALTER A. DANE, our electric boat, needs spring cleaning and charging, and we still do not have the anchor windlass installed on SYMPHONY. Steve has given us sound advice that I hope will make us brave enough to drill those final 5 holes and get the blasted thing done. Thank you, Steve. After 5 months of being homeless (hurricane Sandy), my cousin, Patt, is back in her house in Mantoloking, NJ. They had to get a repopulation permit in order to be allowed to move back in. Richard told her he hoped it didn't mean they would be required to have more babies. There's a 6 pm curfew, a police cruiser parks each night outside the house with lights flashing, and 2 feet of sand has been scraped off the property. Patt sums up the situation, At least the toilets flush. PBYC Staff Commodore 1977 Bill Wells passed away April 28th. Chuck Queen, Jr. remembers him: I knew Bill Wells many many years ago. Sailing with my dad on our Islander 30, we saw the blue stern of that Newport 27 most of the time. I believe, if my memory serves me correctly, that Bill Wells won the very first race held by PBYC. We started off Ventura and sailed down to the Port Hueneme buoy and back. That would have been sometime in 1973 and I was 12. I recall there were somewhere around 40 boats that day I also remember that Bill never liked quitting a race. I remember several times we'd all be out there becalmed, all day, everyone would finally cash it in and motor home only to learn Sunday morning that Bill and crew had stuck it out and finished. For me he was a sailor I looked up to. When we joined PBYC Bill and Iris were the Cruise Chairs and they ran a meticulously organized cruise that took us out to San Miguel Island and down to San Diego with fun stops along the way. The Wells sailed VOYAGER to their former home in Michigan and Bill published a book about the adventure. Our thoughts are with the Wells family. You don't have to be a racer in order to purchase race shirts. The shirts for the Hardway Race are short-sleeved polos with an embroidered race logo patch. The color will probably be green. Please let me know if you would like to order one or more at $25 each. For Milt's race in July and the Tri-point race in August we do screen-printed T-shirts. So get your creative juices stirring and submit designs. Great news! PBYC has 2 new members. Please welcome Terry and Kenzie Sorensen who joined at Bill Gibbs' last Wine Sunday. (What were you serving that day, Bill?) Terry and Kenzie are interested multihull racing and, of course, wine tasting. Ed Morris joined at the last VIM Friday night seminar. He has a 34' sailboat bow-to-bow with Verne on J-dock. Ed's interests are meeting people and sailing. Welcome Terry, Kenzie, and Ed. Membership is Job 1 at PBYC. Encourage your dock mates to climb the stairs, cross the threshold, and discover the fun and friendships PBYC offers. Please add Del Rey Yacht Club to your list of reciprocals.

Notes from the Editor You ve probably already heard we had a marvelous run in the Newport to Ensenada race this year. 2nd to finish and first overall corrected. We won the race. It s traditional for me to include a detailed race description, apologies to non-sailors... Friday April 26 was NOSA's Newport to Ensenada race (125 nm), where the wind gods smiled on the fastest boats this year. The ORCA class (multihulls) and the MAXIs were the last start at noon (2 start lines), of the approximately 200 racing boats. There was good wind at the start and very soon the three lead boats were Loe Real (60' racing trimaran), my Afterburner (52' racing catamaran), and GoCart (SeaCart 30 trimaran). We had 4 hours of screacher beam reaching, our fastest point of sail. We were flying! After 1 hour we were actually ahead a bit of Loe Real, us on rhumb line and them high. We couldn't shake GoCart under 15 knots boat speed. As wind built, we pulled away from GoCart, then Loe Real away from us as speeds topped 20. We split the Coronado Islands at 4pm looking for more wind outside and had knots to the finish. Loe Real went inside on the rhumb line. For 3 hours after the Coronado s we went deeper with our maxi reacher in confused seas hitting a top speed of 23.1, and gybed into the bay from pretty far out. We over-stood by a bit and jib beam reached to the finish doing 22+ knots. We finished before dark at 7:47 PM but not before sunset. Almost 2 hours faster than our previous best. Sadly for everyone else, winds started dropping at sunset. [maybe not so sad, ed] First 3 boats on elapsed time were Loe Real, Afterburner, GoCart. First monohull was Bad Pak, 4th boat in. Loe Real missed a new course record by something like 17 minutes, finishing in 7:04. They are only the 2nd boat in race history to finish before sunset. We won the race with best corrected time overall (Tommy Bahama trophy). As well as trophies for first in class, first Catamaran, and 2nd placed on elapsed. Grand prize was a 2 year lease on a new Lexus. We averaged 17.1 knots over a sailed distance of 135 nm. We also had a great time in Ensenada and at the Hotel Coral. (maybe a bit too much eating and drinking) [maybe not, ed] Your Editor, Bill Gibbs
