Commentary by the Commodore April showers bring May flowers! I wonder if we had enough rain to accomplish this? Something to ponder! What I don't need to ponder is the high level of volunteerism evident in our club. Even though we are small together we accomplish a great deal and in so doing bring credit to our club. This is certainly evident in the newly painted flagpole thanks to Mike Hopper and John Thawley, who accomplished the painting of the flagpole before Opening Day. While some stand around and point out problems and lament lack of solutions, there are others who figure out at way to see the chore completed successfully. Mike and John did just that with the flagpole and earned the coveted Golden Anchor at the General Meeting April 23rd! A further example of our successful volunteerism is the Outstanding and Awesome Opening Day we all pulled off. This is not done through the efforts of one or two people but a whole host of people. I was and am proud of our club, the way we all made her shine for Opening Day. Thanks to Lesley Pelka who headed the organizing committee and all of those members who assisted her in putting this wonderful day. Opening Day ceremonies are as unique as the club holding it! I have not attended an Opening Day that did not have a hitch or 2 in the process! We are a forgiving crowd and all is forgotten but the good stuff. With this in mind I announce the recipient of the Fouled Prop which was awarded to Rear Commodore Jim Lavagnino for missing a page of Visiting Yacht Club people. Jim was gracious in accepting the award and relieved someone else will do this next year! The Blue Ball was won by Jeff Heath and Katherine Paulson, brand new members representing Los Padres Ski Club. Congratulations to them! Jeff is a sailor without a boat and would like to crew when possible! CONGRATULATIONS to Bill Gibbs and Gary Kahler for their outstanding success in the Newport to Ensenada race. Both racers received different and numerous Perpetual Trophies so many that our club also received one for the many Gary and Bill received. Bill's trophies are on display at the club and Gary's will be on display soon. Well deserved applause go to both of you! You bring honor to the all racers and to our club!

The first race of the Island Series is the Hardway Race on May 14. This begins in Santa Barbara and ends in Ventura. Watch your for opportunities to help out with this race! Bright red golf shirts commemorate this race and are priced at an affordable $25 each. I think order forms are on If not contact me and I will hook you up! The Board and General Meetings have been rescheduled for May 21st, a change necessitated because these were originally scheduled on Memorial Day weekend. Robin and Steve Whyte will be preparing dinner and they are accomplished chefs, so be sure to mark this on your calendar to attend. Hopefully we will have Paul Swanson, Director, RBOC (Recreation Boaters of CA) attend to talk to us about what is in store for us at a state level. This organization oversees state and local issues regarding boating. They operate on donations which we solicit at dues paying times! The June Meeting to be held on 25th will feature Janet Lawson who will talk about Predicted Log Races, also known as Cruiser Navigation Contests. She has a lot of experience with these and so it should be an informative and interesting time! A little disclaimer, the speakers have not yet committed so there may be changes. We'll know better closer to the meetings. The Bill of Rights, a tall ship, and nonprofit corporation, needs to be hauled out for painting and servicing! All of the yacht clubs in Ventura County have come together to organize and hold a benefit for this worthy cause. The Pirates Haul Out Party will be held on May 20th at Channel Islands Yacht Club and is described in a flyer with all of the information elsewhere in this newsletter. Tickets are $20 each and you can purchase them from me. Watch for further s about this event. Hoping to see you at the club! Cindi Mathieu PBYC Commodore

From the Vice Commodore This last meeting and dinner were excellent! If you were one of the unlucky ones that didn't make it, you missed out on some great vittles. A thanks goes out to John Thawley and Cindi Mathieu for that one. BBQ tri-tip, chicken, garlic toast and all the fixings yummo! We have some new members this month! Lets welcome Jeff Heath and Kappy Paulson who are also representatives of the Los Padres Ski Club. Great to have you on board guys! Since you all are lucky enough to have a power boater for a Vice Commodore, you are also subject to receiving the local fishing reports. Don't you feel lucky? Ok, here we go. Captain Hooks Landing had 34 anglers on 2 boats with 15 Vermilion Rockfish, 195 Rockfish, and 5 California Scorpionfish. Channel Island Sportfishing Center had 238 anglers on 11 boats with 26 California Sheephead, 34 California Scorpionfish, 1363 Rockfish, 9 Lingcod, 1 California Barracuda, 45 Vermilion Rockfish, 40 Sanddab, 1 White Seabass, 4 Ocean Whitefish, and 3 Cabezon. Port Hueneme Sportfishing had 34 anglers on 2 boats with 247 Rockfish, 30 Ocean Whitefish, 20 Kelp Bass, and 2 California Sheephead. Ventura Sportfishing had 52 anglers on 2 boats with 520 Rockfish, 3 Rock Sole, and 2 Lingcod. As you can see, there is a wide open bite with the rock fishing early this season so if you haven't gotten your lines wet yet you're missing out on some great action! And some great rockfish tacos as well! Rick Lunsford PBYC Vice Commodore

View From The Rear Oh me, Oh my! Was there a TYPO in my last column? The current committee boat is CAROLINE. Apologies to Joe. One week left in April as I write this column. A quiet month as far as races go. What else happened besides opening day? That was fun. My time at the mike went over OK. If I ever have to leaf through a multi-page list of names to announce again, I'll be sure to keep some Tacky Finger handy so I won't skip over pages and omit names. The month of May will bring a change of scenery to me as I will be moving SHIAWASE to a new berth here in the Marina. Probably the biggest benefit of that will be, I get to walk to Canoe Practice, a few hundred FEET away. There's some weight off my carbon footprint. Looking forward to the Island series. I need to get out there and fulfill my Club Photographer duties so I can put some new images on my website. Even had a request to print the image on the Island Series flier! One knows it's time to get back to work when you find a cobweb on your camera lens. James Lavagnino PBYC Rear Commodore

Race Report Joe Vetrano (& John Thawley) I m afraid we have no race news for this last month. And if James get s my boat s name wrong again there ll be no racing news next month either! Just kidding. Hang in there, we have the Island Series starting in just a few months and they are the best three races of the year! In our humble opinion any way. We ll be back with tales of darring do and Jame s photo s to entertain you once more. [ghost written by yours truly, ed] April races by Bill Gibbs But wait there were races in April, I know, I was there. First was the Border Run, Newport Beach (NPB) to San Diego (SD), as a charity event benefitting the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. They raised over $50k, which isn t too bad. The long course rounded the north Coronado island, the short course just went straight there. I know, as I took the short course. (we had to be back in NPB Sunday and couldn t chance drifting all night) My pusher boat project is not ready for the open ocean, so my crew and I sailed down to NPB on Friday April 8 (I had flown in from Florida the day before). We arrived in time for the dinner and skippers meeting at the Harborside restaurant. Next morning the race started at 11:00 AM. Not a lot of wind. But enough to have fun and a few puffs for excitement. Best part of the race was the finish in daylight with enough puffs to show off for the photo boat. We had dinner and celebrated my birthday at SWYC, which is a very nice place, then headed back to NPB. The light air allowed us to motor and arrive NPB 7:30 AM. We managed a 2nd breakfast at Cappy s on PCH. Our rides connected and all crew were home in time for work Monday. (We didn t win though we were first to SD). 4 days later, Thursday, we drove back to NPB, had a crew dinner and started off to Ensenada at noon Friday. We went low and didn t get the wind our $50 forecast promised. After a few hours of watching mono s pass us outside we worked our way outside on a lift to catch Stars & Stripes before the Coronados in 10 knots of wind. A bit more wind had us passing him on the backside. Just after dark we gybed in and found wind and waves for surfing. Doing 22 knots in the dark is always a thrill. 14 miles out the wind died and we spent 7 hours averaging 2 knots. I stayed up all night watching for sneaky bastards passing us along the beach, as in previous slow years. I

didn t see any. We finished at about 5:14 AM, one of our slowest NP-Ens races. We were amazed when they said we were first. You see we weren t the fastest boat in the race. That d be Loe Real, a 60 racing trimaran. Turns out she suffered a bow sprit failure, retired, and we never saw her bail out. We were very happy. Dock and off to breakfast in town, then a nap, and an afternoon in Ensenada s bars and restaurants. Dinner with the ORCA group. A little over-indulgence, maybe. Sunday was a few boat chores, meals, and off to awards. Which I was prepared for. NOSA has erred before. They called my crew & I up on stage before Gary, and handed me the 2nd place mug for ORCA class. They suggested that was it and I should get off the stage. Instead, I walked over next to my First to Finish Overall trophy, pointed at it, and announced I wasn t leaving the stage without it. Shocked looks and several men fumbling through sheaves of paper. After an awkward minute, one of them announces he s right, and hands me the trophy. So I smiled and pointed another trophy (First to Finish Catamaran) and said I want that one too. More paper fumbling and laughter from the audience. As they confirmed my request they also found my First ORCA to Finish trophy and my first place in XS mug. We presented our 3 perpetuals to the audience to much laughter and left the stage. Gary won 1st in ORCA class, corrected. It's the last time I ever talk Gary into competing, and get him excellent crew (Paul Martson, a top F31 sailor). Gary also was the best overall corrected finish for a first timer, winning him the Amigo award. Together we won 5 perpetuals, which was enough to win PBYC the award as the club winning the most perpetuals, the Spirit of Ensenada. With South winds forecast we headed north immediately after the awards and made a fast run to SD for customs, then Catalina to get an angle on the Westerlies forecast for Monday afternoon. We ran right into the wind storm forecast, about 19 miles from Ventura. Nothing like 30+ knot/big sea excitement at dusk. But we didn t die. 28 hours home, including several hours for customs. Another great adventure for Afterburner and crew.

Su s Tidbits Two of our members recently lost parents. Will Tacke's father and Maura O'Connor's mother passed away. Our condolences are extended to their families. On a happier note, Eric and Diana Jones have sold SEAWINGS. Her new owner plans to sail her to Australia. Richard and I have many wonderful memories of racing and cruising on SEAWINGS, including winning trophies in the Ensenada Race, King Harbor Race, and, most recently, the Bandares Bay Regatta. SEAWINGS is a beautiful boat due primarily to Eric's skills as a boat builder and attention to detail. It's evidently the time of year for buying/selling boats. Dale and Lesley Pelka have sold PELICAN. I'm sure it won't be too long before another PELICAN will come along. Will Tacke is looking to buy a Catalina 27. I'm sure Bill will talk about the Ensenada Race. In a nutshell, PBYC had two entries, both multihulls. Between AFTERBURNER and DREI, we have to find a place to display a gaggle [6 is not a gaggle, ed] of huge perpetual trophies. We also won the award for the club that won the most perpetual trophies, AGAIN! [last time was 2004, ed] KATANA, Dr. Laura's brand new boat, retired from the Cabo race after facing 30-knot winds on the nose and breaking seas. Everyone came through OK, including the boat. Too bad the Hardway Race around Santa Cruz is too short to be a qualifier for the Transpac. The qualifying race must be a minimum of 160 nm. Twice around Santa Cruz anyone? The 2011 Island Series Notice of Race booklets have been printed and mailed. Entries are starting to come in. The Hardway Race starts off the series on May 14th. Santa Barbara Sailing Club starts the race, we finish it. We always need help for the races, so please volunteer to be part of the excitement. Genie Pang attended a seminar and brought back useful info on boating web sites. Here are just a few: California Department of Boating and Waterways. Contains laws and regulations affecting California boaters plus information on buying a boat, using a boat broker, boat registration, boating facilities, and consumer protection. Marine surveyor David Pascoe's website on boats and boating. Chock-full of useful articles for both the novice and expert boater. He's very opinionated but his boat reviews are a good source of information. A website to be visited and studied many times. The only problem is that many of his boat review entries are old and cold. Visit this website for current chart information and NOAA chart downloads. The U.S. Coast Guard's navigation center for recreational and commercial boaters features information on GPS, using your VHF radio, and rules of the road (navigation rules). The site contains safety alerts, the U.S. Light List, and Local Notice to Mariners (be sure to sign-up to receive your free notices!). You can download important publications, including the Light List.

Notes from the Editor No need to talk about recent races, I think I ve covered that. So allow me to mention my upcoming Wine Sunday on June 5. Yes, it's a ways off, but we re planning something special. My food buddy John is making a Paella, a large Spanish rice dish with just about everything in it. To pair wines, I am bringing a selection of Spanish wines, including some of my favorites from the Priorat region near Barcelona. Something different. Let me know if you might be joining us. The Island Series races are some of the best around. The pride of Ventura and of PBYC. I speak as an appreciative participant. So thanks in advance to everyone at PBYC who helps put them on. I m looking forward to the Hardway and plan to have my repairs completed by then. Repairs? Yes, the other half of the sailing/racing hobby. After the Border Run I had a broken carbon batten to repair. After NP-Ens, I have broken wind instruments, broken outboard motor control, and a broken mast rotator. A 5/8 x 9 long bolt mutinied and went AWAL somewhere just outside Ventura. The outboard locked into full throttle just after we entered Ventura Harbor. It is never ending. But in a few weeks we ll be in SB again, representning PBYC as best we can. Your Editor, Bill Gibbs
