3 From the Commodore I am starting this months article the day after 2010 Change of Command, so now it is official, P.B.Y.C. and it's members are stuck with me as Commodore for the year..just kidding. If the rest of the events this year are as well planned and executed as CoC event was, then we are in for some great food and good times. Of course Change of Command did not just happen by itself, I would like to thank all who made it happen. However the following all deserve particular mention for the effort they put into making the evening a success - Cindi, Leslie, Mindi, Lynne, Cheryl and Robin all proved that we can cater events in house and put on a first class evening with great food and entertainment. It was also very pleasing to see so many friends, new members Lou and Anne Wallman, plus a whole bunch of staff commodores, blazers were everywhere. Following the ceremonies we held a super short monthly meeting, presented Lou and Anne with their burgee, awarded the Golden Anchor then the Fouled Prop and had the drawing of the 'Blue Ball of Happiness. Once again the member whose name got drawn was not present so the $175 he missed rolls over to $200 at the next meeting on February 20th... Remember you have to be there to win, so be sure to attend!! You will also notice some clean up has occurred on the deck and in the shed, this is the result of the efforts of Dale, George, Tom and I a couple of Saturdays ago. I would like to thank them all for participating in the job and getting it sorted out. By all means use the shed to store club items, but please do not just dump stuff in it. Let's try to keep it tidy so we can use it. I strongly believe it is participation of members like the ones I have mentioned in the events above that will be crucial to PBYC having a great 2010, and therefore 'Participation will be my theme throughout the year. I am sure you will hear it several times again, so if you have not visited the club in a while, or not participated in anything for some time, get back into it, it can be very rewarding and a lot of FUN. We have the spring series race on February 13th and I know Richard is looking for volunteers, so call him and see where you can help. I would appreciate your ideas for events and increasing membership or anything else you think would be beneficial so please call me or let's discuss at the club. As always make our new members feel at home and help them settle into PBYC events. Looking forward to seeing you at the club or on the water Gerald Davies PBYC Commodore

4 From the Vice Commodore Ahoy Maties!! Yep, that's right, it is time to go boating again! The first racing series of the year for PBYC is right around the corner. Spring series starts on Feb. 13. We need help on the committee boat, finish line, and serving those hungry racers afterwards. Then we get to do it all over again in two more weeks on the 27th. Due to the racing schedule this month, we have moved the general meeting to the 20th. Our year got kicked off with the Change of Command Dinner on Jan. 24th with a great home cooked dinner by Leslie Pelka and Cindi Mathieu. Thanks so much for your hard work. One last thank you to our new Jr. Staff Commodore Dale Pelka for his dedication and duty last year. That granddaughter I spoke of last month finally arrived on the 31st of Dec. She needed a C Section in order to come [I believe Randy is referring to the mother, ed]. Everyone is doing great, now. Then another daughter gave us our 18th grandchild, another granddaughter on Jan. 11th. Boy, if I have too many more of these, I will have to go back to school and learn counting again! I have had inquiries about a St. Patrick's Day dinner for the 13th of March. Please give us some feedback on the interest level so we can decide to do it, or not. Robin Whyte is interested in helping to put this on. Her events are always well done, so it promises to be a great party if you can come. One more request does anyone have ideas on what they would like to see for meeting programming? Please remember to check the bar schedule in the back of the Fore & Aft for your dates. And yes, it is the current years' schedule, even though it may read 2009! [Already fixed, thank you very much, ed] Randy Buckingham PBYC Vice Commodore

5 View From The Rear Change of Command has come and gone. I believe everyone had a really fun time. Lesley Pelka and I were the organizers and we had a lot of help from fellow members. First, I want to thank Lesley for her superlative assistance in planning this event and pulling it off. We learned that next time we will roast turkey breast! (All of those bones are a chore to carve around!) We were grateful and thankful of the help and cooperation from the following members: George Moore, who cleaned the deck and straightened up the deck; Tom Nelson, who hired a bartender; Lynne Nelson who sat at the reception table and accepted money for the dinner; Sheryl Lunsford and Mindy Siemens for helping to serve salads, clear plates and generally being helpful; Robin Whyte, who almost single handedly cleaned up on Saturday night and returned on Sunday to finish; Jim Lavagnino for coming on Sunday to help with general cleanup and vacuuming. Stephanie Pelka assisted her mother and me on Friday afternoon with shopping and setting up the tables with place settings and decorations. THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR VOLUNTEERING TO HELP AND MAKING THIS EVENT SUCCESSFUL! Thanks to all of the members who came and enjoyed the libations, dinner and ceremony! February is a very busy month for the club. Two of the three Spring Series races are February th th 13 and 27. Putting on races is a lot of work. Richard and Su Countess put in untold and unheralded time to put on successful races. They are always thankful for the assistance of members to assist with the races. Su is finally home recuperating from her surgery and will be unable to co-lead with Richard. Please think about volunteering for one or both races in February. There are many tasks and your assistance is needed from the Race Committee boat to the finish line. PBYC has a great reputation in putting on well run races, so come be a part of these successful events. th The Board Meeting followed by the General Meeting will be on February 20. The Blue Ball of Happiness is up to $200, but you have to be present to win! Dinner is provided, in fact, a volunteer for this is probably needed. Your officers and board welcome anyone who would like to volunteer to help with our activities. Please call or contact any of us if you have questions about where your skills could be helpful. Cindi Mathieu PBYC Rear Commodore

6 Race Report Richard Countess PBYC Spring Series Since posting the Notice of Race for the 2010 Spring Series several weeks ago, I have received many responses from local racers asking why PBYC and all other local clubs do not require PHRF certificates for non-spinnaker boats. Stan Whisenhunt's recent race column in the Ventura Star pointed out that non-spinnaker boats outnumbered those using spinnakers in almost every weekend race last year. According to PHRF of Southern California: all boats racing under PHRF must have PHRF certificates or it is unfair to those skippers that have them. The PHRF certificate documents a configuration and provides a specific set of (Class) Rules that its members must comply with. The ratings on the PHRF certificate are predicated upon the boats sailing in the configurations documented on their PHRF certificate and it requires that those boats also comply with PHRF Class Rules. Boats sailing without a PHRF certificate could be sailing with "modifications" that are inconsistent with the ratings for a standard/stock boat which could provide unfair advantages to non-phrf boats. Also, since the boats never signed a certificate committing to comply with PHRF Class Rules, they can remove weight from their interiors, sail without engines and/or other safety equipment, etc. providing them further advantages by not being a PHRF member. In fact, there are so many advantages to racing without a PHRF certificate (because you can "cheat" without violating any specific set of rules), it almost doesn't make sense to obtain one. Racing is a "game" that must be played by the rules, which include the rules of the class in which you are racing (boats without a PHRF certificate don't belong to any class) as well as the RRS. Racing without requiring membership in PHRF will likely have a negative impact on racing because those who are honest, Corinthian sailors will become discouraged and quit racing. Since PBYC hosts the first PHRF-handicapped races of the year, we have decided to set an example for other local clubs by requiring all boats regardless of class (other than ORCA boats that are members of their own organization) to obtain a current PHRF certificate before the end of the 2010 PBYC Spring Series in order to be eligible for series trophies. With my sidekick recuperating from spinal surgery at home, I will need plenty of assistance on the race committee including finishing boats. Cindi has already volunteered to be in charge of the post-race festivities at the club for the series. Miscellaneous The 2009 PBYC racing sailboat of the year was awarded at PBYC's Change of rd Command on January 23 to Afterburner. [Woooo Hooo!, ed] It was a close contest with XS and R'Escape just several points back. 16 Your Editor, Bill Gibbs The Fore N Aft Club Notes from the Editor Sorry I missed all the fun at Change of Command dinner. Work had me traveling to Israel of all places. The company I work for is owned by an Israeli company and they thought it was a good time for a general meeting. About 20 hours of flights and layovers to get home. Sheesh! I did manage to arrange a stop in Barcelona where both my daughters were vacationing, so it wasn t all work. Barcelona has some really good food and wine, by-the-way. Sadly, neither of my daughters was the least interested in traveling to Valencia for a glimpse of the 2 mega-multihull America s Cup boats warming up there. Has anyone been following the America s Cup? They must have set a record for the most litigation. As of today they have been ordered to go ahead and race on February 8, even though there are several open issues that could invalidate the win. The big one is whether sails are part of the vessel s construction that must occur in the nation of origin, in this case Switzerland (Alinghi), who s sails may have been made by North in Nevada. Alinghi is racing a giant catamaran. Oracle (the US team) has a giant trimaran. Both boats are 90 wide with 90 waterlines. Oracle s trimaran has a wing instead of soft sails, the largest wing ever built at over 200. It seems to be working well for them. While all the time in court may help make this one of the stupider America s Cup races, the boats themselves are impressive and I m excited to see them sail, regardless of the outcome.
