COMMODORE'S COMMENTARY Dorothy Adriansen 2/16

Hello All, I came to the club on June 1st to do dinner prep for the next day s meetings and was delighted to hear children s voices and laughter. What a great way to start off the month of June at PBYC! Rob had booked the club for Maddy s end of year surf party and the kids were having a blast. We held our May board meeting and General Membership meeting on June 2nd and had 20 plus members in attendance. National Weather Service Forecaster & Marine Program Manager, Ryan Kittel spoke and presented us with a slide show on marine and area weather. Jim and I did go with the Hawaiian dinner theme as planned, and served kahlua pork, shrimp macaroni salad, tropical green salad and Bananas Foster Flambé for dessert. Thanks to all who helped with cleanup. Ventura Yacht Club hosted the Commodore s Classic race on June 3rd. Our boat, Miramar had 2 PBYC staff commodores and yours truly aboard. If there had been a prize for coming in last we would have won it. We had a fabulous time out on the water though. Unfortunately we missed the Father s Day Sail on the 17th due to no wind. We were also absent for the June monthly meetings on June 23 as we were out of town putting on a couples baby shower in Las Vegas for our youngest daughter. I hear the Recla s dinner was fantastic! Coming up this next weekend is our Independence Day (4th of July) cruise to Smuggler s Cove, a beautiful anchorage off Santa Cruz Island. If you re a hiker there are several trails on Santa Cruz Island that can be reached from Smuggler s Cove. Santa Cruz Island is the largest of the eight islands that make up the Channel Islands and it is also the largest island in California. This island has many species, like the Santa Cruz Island Horse, the island scrub jay and Santa Cruz Island Fox that have not been found anywhere else on earth. Jim and I will be going out for this cruise and hope to see many of you out there. We plan on leaving Saturday morning and returning on Tuesday. The VIM Swap Meet is also being held on Saturday, the 30th, so we ll probably swing by there first. Around the corner in July is our Annual Milt Ingram trophy Race on Saturday, July 7th. Milt s Race is the largest race our club organizes and Richard can always use volunteers, so if you can help please give Richard a call. Wishing all of you a fantastic summer, Dorothy Adriansen Commodore 4th of JULY CRUISE ~ SMUGGLERS COVE Dates: June 30 Thru July 2, 2018 Destination: Eastern End of Santa Cruz: Lat N Long: W Distance: 19 Miles Course to Smugglers: 223 deg Return to Ventura Harbor: 43 deg Time: Underway at approximately 10 or 11 AM Saturday Weather Forecast: Saturday S winds 5 to 10 kt. Hikes, Group Kayak / Dingy events. Skippers Meeting: Friday June 29th 7:00 PM at the Club to Coordinate space available on boats for guests. 4 Miramar (Adriansen's) Strange Bird (Rossman) Galene (Recla's) Sweet (Fried / Mailman) Eagles Wings (Duren's) VIRTUES OF VICE COMMODORE Ken Recla June was another fun filled action packed month of fun and frivolity. We had our May meeting in June, our June meeting in June, two club rentals, Ventura West swap meet, Fathers Day Cruise, Disabled Veterans Sail day, and are ending with the Ventura Isle Swap Meet and beginning of the 4th of July Cruise to Smugglers. I didn t personally make the May Meeting in June, but heard all the rave reviews about the Hawaiian Fest and the NOAA Weatherman. 4/16

Father s Day Cruise proved to be a lot of fun. Ultimately only a couple of boats made it out that day, but back at the club we had 15 plus folks enjoying a wonderful BBQ. One of the couples submitted an application to join the club the May s. Can t beat that. The Swap meet was much slower than last year and we got no interest for membership. Hopefully we ll fare better at the Ventura Isle Marina swap meet this Saturday Our June club meeting was the first time I had the opportunity to run the meetings as Dorothy was out of town. The most fun was approving new members. We need to give a big welcome to Herbie and Wynn May, as well as Rick and Patti Eyraud! Some of the things under consideration are: Adding more definition to our Pet Policy to include Service Animal allowances, defining responsibilities and determining how we can make the club pet friendly on the deck. Currently a committee includes Lisa Hopper, Sheryl Lunsford and myself. How our Capital Improvement funds are determined and laying out a replacement matrix for all items considered capital which may need replacing in the future. Overall Club Host training to ensure we meet the requirements to maintain our California Liquor License. This will ultimately require all members to be trained / re trained. July is looking to be a great month with plenty of Club Sponsored fun. On the 7th we have the Milt Ingram Race, followed by the Santa Barbara Wine Festival / Cruise on the weekend of the 20th and ending on a high note with our Annual Progressive Dinner in lieu of a Monthly Meeting at the clubhouse (on the 28th). Sheryl Lunsford is organizing the Progressive Dinner and I know she is looking for Boats that are willing to host one of the stops on the evening. Don t miss this event it is always a blast. And if you're interested in being a host boat, contact Sheryl. FACILITY: We continue to make progress on the facility improvements and maintenance. We re up to 32 closed maintenance actions for the year. The new outdoor tables have arrived and already replaced the old ones on the deck. SAFETY California Boating Exam; Navigation Rules: The Coast Guard Navigation Rules regarding right of way and responsibilities between vessels: Rule 16 Action by Give way Vessel: Every vessel which is directed to keep out of the way of another vessel shall, so far as possible, take early and substantial action to keep well clear. Rule 17 Action by Stand on Vessel: (a)(i) Where one of two vessels is to keep out of the way, the other shall keep her course and speed. (ii) The latter vessel may, however, take action to avoid collision by her maneuver alone, as soon as it becomes apparent to her that the vessel required to keep out of the way is not taking appropriate action in compliance with these Rules. Rule 18 Responsibilities Between Vessels: (a) A power driven vessel underway shall keep out of the way of: (i) a vessel not under command; (ii) a vessel restricted in her ability to maneuver; (iii) a vessel engaged in fishing; (iv) a sailing vessel. (b) A sailing vessel underway shall keep out of the way of: (i) a vessel not under command; (ii) a vessel restricted in her ability to maneuver; (iii) a vessel engaged in fishing. 5/16

"LET'S GET SOCIAL" by Patsy Recla Summer is here and everyone is coming or going somewhere. We have a lot of things on the horizon as you all have heard. First thing is the Milt Ingram Race on the 7th and 8th of July. We will need lots of volunteers to make this a success. We will need help with the following things: Saturday Race Day Food (keeping it ready all day), on Sunday preparing and serving breakfast, Trophy Presentations, Raffles and Silent Auction and of course clean up after. Please contact Richard or myself if you can help in any way. Next up is the Santa Barbara Wine Festival, July Several of us will have boats up there for part of the week. Most of us will do the Saturday Beach Festival. So come up and join the fun. Reminder, get 8/16

your tickets for the festival now before they sell out. Then on July 28th we will have our Progressive dinner. This is where we get to visit others boats and eat a lot of tasty foods. Sheryl Lunsford heads up this event so if you have questions or would like to volunteer your boat as one of our stops please give her a call at As a last note I am looking ahead to Halloween. Yes Halloween. We will need to do some planning ahead as PBYC Fair Winds and Following Seas Patsy Progressive Boat Dinner & Dingy Poker Run Please volunteer to be a host boat! This is a fun & fabulous way to tour other's boats, rev up our dingy's, or other watercraft, and hang out on the docks with fellow members and guests and of course win wonderful prizes for the three best poker hands. Each guest pays $20 for food and drinks of bottled beer and wine. Check in, pick a card at each boat, and party! More information and a slip map will be provided when I know who has volunteered their boat. Here is a sample itinerary: 1. 5:30 6:00: Medium Appetizer 2. 6:15 6:45: Medium Appetizer 3. 7:00 7:30: Heavy Appetizer 4. 7:45 8:15: Heavy Appetizer 5. 8:30????: Awesome Dessert Call, text or Sheryl Lunsford at or firstmate.cdragon@gmail.com 2017's progressive dinner was quite the success with six host boats and about 40 drunken sailors. 9/16

Join in on the fun this year and maybe your name will be drawn at the general meeting on the last host boat! PHOTOGRAPHER'S POINT OF VIEW by Maggie Hood A (belated) kudos for the Mother s Day sail and BBQ event. With no family living here in Ventura it s really great to have my PBYC family to hang out with. My son Alex was in town from school in Tempe, AZ and thanks to Captain Ken on Galene we had a chance to sail together for the first time. Amazing since he s 22 and I ve sailed forever, but we sold our Cal 39 when he was born. Alex took the helm with Captain Ken s guidance and his smile was priceless! The day couldn t have been better and after a short break we came back for the really fun BBQ. What a great club event! See more Mother's Day Sail and BBQ photos. 10/16
