Thanks to the Leadership provided by our 2018 Commodore Dorothy Adriansen and her team, we experienced unprecedented growth, improved financial stability, and enjoyed a wonderful set of events. Thanks Dorothy and all the PBYC volunteers. Looking forward to 2019 with great expectations. A lot of great events are planned, but it s not too late to get your ideas in as we will be finalizing the calendar for 2019 at our first Board Meeting of the year January 13th at 12:30 PM. I know JR is working up his Cruise Schedule and Patsy s putting her final touches on the Social Calendar, so get your input in now. And, our Program Chair Larry Freeland has a few new ideas, but would be willing to hear yours. From my perspective on 2019 there are 3 areas I want to emphasize, and you ll hear me talk about a lot going forward. (1) We need to keep the growth of Membership going and I know that Robin Arnold will keep us focused and moving in the right direction. (2) I want to see us expand the types of things available to Members in the form of fun activities, and philanthropic events. (3) And finally, I want to ensure we re meeting our Fiduciary responsibilities and will conduct the required Annual Audit of the books and processes to maintain our status as a non profit 501 ( c ) 7, as well as a holder of a California Liquor License.

Food will be provided by a local Caterer DJ s and Music will be provided by our own John Thawley. Don t miss out on this event filled with a nice blend of pomp and frivolity.

4 First event out of the gates is our Change of Command coming up on the Saturday the 26th of January (6:00 PM). Our committee has already been working to ensure it is a successful event that will be held at the PBYC Facilities. Patsy is sending out invitations. Food will be provided by a local Caterer DJ s and Music will be provided by our own John Thawley. Don t miss out on this event filled with a nice blend of pomp and frivolity. On Saturday January 19th at 3:30 PM there will a memorial service at the club for our recently passed Staff Commodore Rick Lunsford. As most of you know Rick was a fun loving guy who gave a lot to our club over the years and we will sorely miss him. If you can make it to the event, please let Sheryl or Patsy know. There also will be a burial at sea ceremony planned for the spreading of Rick s ashes. But, enough from me. Here s wishing everyone Fair Winds and Following Seas and hope to see you at all the upcoming club events. Ken VICE COMMODORE Sheryl Lunsford Hello PBYC family, As you all have heard by now, my husband, Rick Lunsford passed away recently. Thank you for your kind thoughts and prayers. I am so grateful that I have the tremendous friendship of PBYC members. Just one more reason to join a yacht club, or should I say OUR yacht club. Who knew that this would be one of the many benefits of membership? 2019 will be a much better year with your love and support to help me be the best Vice Commodore I can be. Let me welcome my team and introduce the chairs that fall under my leadership as VC. It s gonna be a hell of a year! To begin the new year and my duties as your new Rear Commodore I d like to start by reflecting on the primary purpose of PBYC.

It falls under the leadership of the Rear Commodore, Scott Arnold. REAR COMMODORE Scott Arnold Hello fellow club members and welcome to 2019! To begin the new year and my duties as your new Rear Commodore I d like to start by reflecting on the primary purpose of PBYC. In our By Laws our purpose is stated; The purpose of Pierpont Bay Yacht Club is to promote and develop Corinthianism through providing the opportunity to share fellowship with other yachtsmen and through the sponsorship of a broad spectrum of yachting activities. Looking back on 2018, PBYC has clearly followed these guiding principles. Our racing program continued to attract local and distant racers alike. PBYC members enjoyed many cruises last year including destinations to Anacapa island, Santa Cruz island, Channel Islands harbor and Santa Barbara harbor. PBYC members also enjoyed maritime and nautical presentations and social events at the clubhouse. Yes we kept busy! Together, outgoing commodore Dorothy Adriansen and incoming new commodore Ken Recla have promoted and brought a new energy to our club. As proof, our membership has risen 65% over the previous year and I am still getting inquires from visitors and dockmates regarding possible new memberships. Usually this time of year we look forward to the new year with new hopes and optimisms which is indeed what we will do. At the same time, we should keep the current momentum going from 2018 into the new year. We got a good thing going so let s keep doing it! As rear commodore, I have the privilege of working with and supporting many of the volunteers here at PBYC. These volunteers are the lifeblood of our club. Without them PBYC would struggle to be what it is today. Without them the club would grind to a crawl and we would not be able to offer the many services and functions we all enjoy. I d like to take a moment to recognize and thank these very special members for offering their energy and time.

Next time you see these members at the club please shake their hand and thank them. Because of their efforts we re going to have a great Scott Arnold Rear Commodore PBYC RACE COMMITTEE Richard Countess ASBCYC HIGH POINT SERIES The final race of this three race series scheduled for December 1st was cancelled due to severe weather conditions: winds in excess of 25 knots with gusts to 35 mph and 6 foot to 9 foot seas. The overall winners for the series were Dave Boatner s J 35 RIVAL in the Spinnaker A fleet with two first place finishes, Mike Hopper s J 22 MAJIC DRAGON in the Spinnaker B fleet with two first place finishes, Brent Swanson s Islander 29 VELERO in the Non Spinnaker fleet with a first place finish in the first race (Note: no non spinnaker boats finished the second race), and Jerzy Poprawski s Moorings 4300 KASTOR POLLUX in the ORCA fleet with two first place finishes. The overall standings for all boats entered in the series are posted on PBYC s Website. Most of the racers attended the trophy presentation at PBYC in the late afternoon on December 1st where they were treated to hot potato soup thanks to Lisa Hopper. Awards Photo Album. I would like to thank the following club members for making this race series a success: Patsy Recla, Cheryl Duren, Judy Nolde, and Jeff Heath for their assistance on SYMPHONY that served as the race committee boat; Patsy, Cheryl, Jeff Olmstead and Jamie Clark for finishing boats; and Lisa Hopper for preparing hot food for the post race festivities. VENTURA COUNTY HIGH POINT SERIES The Ventura County High Point series is comprised of 20 individual races selected by Richard Sharpe, the sponsor of this series. PBYC has the following six races included in this series: all three races of the Spring series, the Milt Ingram Trophy race, the Tri Point Ocean race, and the second race of the Two Harbor Fall series. The scoring for this series is different from the one used for the ASBCYC sponsored series in that points are awarded to each boat based on the number of boats they beat. The final standings for the top five boats in this series are Brent Swanson s VELERO with 34 points, Mike Geer s BANDALOOP with 33 points, Carlos Brea s FAT TUESDAY with 31 points, Mike Leary s PANGEA with 25 points, and Tom Hudson s E TICKET with 23 points. Trophies will be presented to these five skippers by Richard and Paula Sharpe at PBYC s Spring Series Race #1 on February 9th. SAFE SPORT TRAINING US Sailing has mandated that all race officials receive training to help protect youth and adult athletes from various forms of abuse, harassment and bullying in order to be in compliance with the US Olympic Committee s requirements for SafeSport training, the athlete protection program mandated by federal law.

Susan and I completed this training last month. First let s talk about December. Wow, busy month. We started off the month with our Fall Series #3 race that did not happen due to foul weather.

Great food, great company and music provided by John Thawley. Next up, Ken and I spent 10 Day s of Christmas in Idaho visiting our daughter and families.

Last, but not least, we celebrated New Year s Eve at the club for an impromptu party due to the cancellation of a New Year s Cruise due to foul weather again. Happy New Year to all.

We had a get together anyway to hand out trophies for the Series races. Then we all gathered for a celebration of the Parade of Lights" in Ventura Harbor. So much fun. Great food, great company and music provided by John Thawley. Next up, Ken and I spent 10 Day s of Christmas in Idaho visiting our daughter and families. After spending a week of 35 degree or below weather, we discovered how spoiled we are living in Southern California. Last, but not least, we celebrated New Year s Eve at the club for an impromptu party due to the cancellation of a New Year s Cruise due to foul weather again. Happy New Year to all.
