COMMODORE'S COMMENTARY Lisa Hopper Happy June Everyone. Wow, May (including the first week of June) was really something. This past weekend we hosted the Hardway Race, first of three in the Islands Series. I ve said it before and I ll say it again. Wind is a fickle thing. Never more true than this Saturday. After embarking from Santa Barbara, nearly half the fleet dropped out before reaching the Island. No wind left most bobbing on the waves calculating ETA in Ventura At this rate we might get in for the trophies tomorrow. Emphasis on might. So down they went one by one, calling in to DNF. Those who stuck it out however, were rewarded. The wind picked up and the first boat crossed the finish line at 21:59:16. I know because I was seconds away from coming off the finish line without having a boat to blow the horn at. Once the Chim Chim came up to the club, the place was hopping until well after 2:00 a.m. The weekend before, Memorial Day, two PBYC boats (the Countesses in Symphony and Wavelength with the Hoppers with guest Janet Dawald) made the trek to Pelican Bay. Again, fickle wind. Heading to the Island we had an atypical breeze that allowed us to sail a good portion of the way. Coming back, not so much. In between, pretty perfect. It was a little breezy but we had great anchorage with minimal jostling about. We hiked up toward Prisoners and then back up to the old hotel site, dinghyed over to visit with AYC folks in Prisoners and around the little coves up the Island a ways. Then we ate and drank. Funny story. Janet was already planning on making her not with a mix margaritas for one of the requisite cocktail hours, but the day before we left she ed that she had also packed six bottles of wine. My eyes widened and the next time I talked to her I had to ask if I d given her the impression that I was a total lush (haha). But damned if, between the two boats, we didn t polish off her wine, the wine we brought, Richard and Su s wine and all but one round of margaritas which we treated ourselves with when we hit the slip. Now in our defense, it was pretty chilly and the breeze added just enough nip to warrant massive amounts of alcohol. We cocktailed on Symphony both nights. Very pleasant good appetizers, good wine, good company. J It was mostly about the water this month. At the last minute I was quilted into entering the Commodores Classic (a race during which any current or past officer with Commodore in their title must be at the helm). Between the three boats boasting PBYC Commodores past and present, we had seven skippers and crew eligible to drive. Pretty impressive!! I was on Wavelength and finished my first race ever where I drove the entire race (actually drove any part of a race!). Crewing for me Mike Hopper and Ken Recla. Over my protests, not wanting to engage, we

had an amazing (the best) start. AND I didn t finish last!! Woohoo! PBYC s own Symphony came in second. Congrats to Su and Richard Countess with crew Dale and Lesley Pelka and Rick and Sheryl Lunsford! Continuing with the water and racing theme, Maggie Hood regaled us with a PowerPoint presentation depicting her participation in Antiqua Race Week. Truthfully I was spending more time marveling at the scenery than the racing, but I have to admire Maggie taking on the grueling job of crewing over a week of races and with sailors she'd never met before. Kudos! Somewhere in there we celebrated Moms with the Moms effectively cooking themselves a great potluck brunch. Come on guys. Next year, Mother s Day is on you! It was a very nice day. As is becoming tradition with our various social events, the drink of the day was Pomegranate Mimosas (Pom mosa for short).

[SEE MORE MOTHER'S DAY PHOTOS IN OUR PHOTO ALBUM] I'll end by thanking everyone who helped with the Hardway (especially Dorothy and Karen who cooked up some awesome chili and Judy who bartended til the wee hours), brought food (and family) to the Mothers Day Brunch and cooked for the General Meeting (Kappy and Jeff made a spectacular dinner), ventured out to the Islands, and every other little thing you all do to make PBYC such a great club! Many hands make light work! Lisa Hopper PBYC Commodore

VIRTUES OF VICE COMMODORE Jeff Olmstead Sailing season is revving up! The Memorial Day cruise to the islands is in the books as I write this. I understand only the Hoppers and Countesses made the overnight stay at Pelican Bay. Lunsfords had boat trouble but not dinghy trouble. I saw Sheryl on I dock doing the VIM dinghy poker run Saturday afternoon as I was going out for a daysail. The wind was pretty light near the harbor then; we barely made it to the vicinity of the Chips buoy in a 3½ hour sail. There s a new sheriff in town! Or the same sheriff with a new boat. Be sure to stop by the club and ogle Bill Gibb s hardware from N2E. He won three trophies with his new boat Wahoo : best corrected ORCA, best corrected cat, best corrected all boats. Congratulations again, Bill. Maggie Hood s slide show after the monthly club dinner telling about her 9 day trip to Antigua Race Week was great. Despite sailing nearly every day she had time to take enough pictures to give us a good idea of what happened, the good and the bad. Well, there isn t a bad day on the water, is there? But there was plenty of wind, sun, and beer, not necessarily in that order, to fuel the proceedings. [SEE MORE PHOTOS OF THE PRESENTATION IN OUR MAY MEETING PHOTO ALBUM] How is your pin collection coming along? Don t forget my challenge to see who has the best/most lapel pins on their blazer by next Opening Day. My count is up to six. I found my long lost PBYC pin last week, and also added an SCYA pin I got at the Rear Commodore seminar in January.

My new dinghy cover is finally finished. Doubling patches at the expected high wear points were the final touch. Next project: a rope mat for the back porch at home. I have already made one for my boat. Stop by and see it sometime. You ll probably want one for your boat. I can give you a copy of the directions. What, did you think I was going to make one for you? Jeff WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBERS Janet Dawald and the Reclas, Ken and Patsy, received their burgees at the May meeting. Also welcome Wayne and Julie Hopkins who joined earlier this year but haven't been able to make it to a meeting to be presented their burgee. We hope to see the Hopkins soon! JANET DAWALD

KEN & PATSY RECLA RACE COMMITTEE Richard Countess HARDWAY RACE We had sixteen boats for the 36 th Annual Hardway Race held on June 4 th. Our cohost, Santa Barbara Sailing Club, started the race in Santa Barbara and PBYC had the responsibility of finishing the boats in Ventura. With VELERO the only boat entered in the non spinnaker class, skipper Brent Swanson elected to sail with the spinnaker boats around Anacapa Island, a distance of 47 nm instead of a much shorter course of 24 nm down the coast. Due to a scheduling conflict with an inaugural race co sponsored by SBYC and SDYC, the SoCal 300 race from Santa Barbara to San Diego, we had no entries for the 67 nm course around Santa Cruz Island. The wind was light for most of the day causing seven boats to drop out. John

Gallagher s 32 foot Gunboat catamaran CHIM CHIM was the first boat to finish at 9:59 PM followed by Bill Gibbs 47 foot catamaran WAHOO at 10:37 PM, with WAHOO correcting out approximately one hour ahead of CHIM CHIM. Dwight Rowe s Olson 40 BUENA VISTA finished first in the A Fleet, followed by Jim Albert s C&C 37 PARADISE FOUND in second place. The first place boat in the Spinnaker B fleet was CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR, a Santa Cruz 27, followed by EPIC, a Laser 28M, in second place, and Verne Haller s Catalina 320 R ESCAPE in third place. Crewing with Verne were Mike Hopper and new member Ken Recla. Randy Alorn s Cal 2 29 OUT PATIENT finished first in the Spinnaker C fleet followed by YOUNG FOOLS, a J-24. OUT PATIENT finished first overall for all spinnaker boats with a corrected finish time of 10 hours and 33 minutes. [It was a slow race!] I would like to thank Jeff Heath for providing his 5 th wheel for the finish line. It sure beats sitting in the front seat of a car juggling clip boards, horns and flash lights. I also want to thank our finishing crews: Jamie Clark and Rob Skaar for the 4 to 6 PM shift; Dale Pelka and Rick Lunsford for the 6 to 8 PM shift; Lisa Hopper, Jim Adriansen, and new member Janet Dawald for the 8 to 10 PM shift; and Jeff Heath and Jeff Olmstead for the 10 PM to midnight shift. And finally I want to thank Judy Nolde for bartending on Saturday evening until 2 AM Sunday morning and again on Sunday morning for the trophy presentation; Dorothy Adriansen and Karen Stager for providing the two types of delicious homemade chili for the racers on Saturday; Lisa Hopper for keeping the club open until 3 AM Sunday morning; and Sheryl Lunsford for providing the continental breakfast for the trophy presentation on Sunday morning. I am including photos from the race elsewhere in the newsletter. Full race results are available on PBYC s web site. 13 A LAST MINUTE ENTRY [SEE MORE PHOTOS OF THE HARDWAY RACE IN OUR PHOTO ALBUM] SU'S TIDBITS What if we gave a race and no one finished? That was the question at the club the day of the Hardway Race. Richard had scheduled finish line crew from 2 pm to midnight and only the last shift finished boats; the two catamarans and the fastest monohull. The wind was very light and the fog was thick. In spite of all that we got a nice from YOUNG FOOLS, a J 24 from our co host Santa Barbara Sailing Club, "Bioluminescent lit dolphin, a port starboard duck in the dark and fog on the backside of Anacapa, and myriad Humpbacks were some of the highlights!" Cruising has changed over the years. I used to have a rule that we would not cruise on holiday weekends because the anchorages were so crowded. The two cruises we did last year and now this Memorial Day cruise proved that rule wrong. Maybe it correlates with the number of empty slips. Pelican was not crowded. After a motorsail over, we had a rather ungraceful anchoring. Three guys (it's always guys) in

dinghies helped us plant the hooks. Amazingly, we knew two of them! Once we were anchored, the weekend was relaxing with nearly calm wind. There was a lot of fog, 'though. We hosted happy hour on SYMPHONY Saturday and Sunday. New member Janet Dawald was aboard WAVELENGTH with Lisa and Mike Hopper. She made margaritas using an ingenious tool a cocktail shaker with a spiral wire ball inside. Gotta get me one. We did see lots of non human wildlife. One of our fellow cruisers moved to Pelican from Little Scorpion. It seems that the Santa Barbarians there got a tad wild to suit. Mike and Dena from MILLIE M, our sister ship, dinghied over to visit and we compared, once again, the differences between our hull number 28 and their hull 102. Mike will be relocating the socket for the cockpit table to where SYMPHONY's is. The trip back on Monday turned into another motor sail. Thanks to Mike and Lisa for organizing the cruise. I encourage you to come out for the July 4th holiday cruise to Little Scorpion. Sheryl has information on the anchorage on our web site. The Commodore's Classic on Sunday, May 22nd, was a blast. PBYC had three entries and seven commodores out there. VYC organizes this race each year to pay tribute to folks who have been or are the leaders of our yacht clubs. The rules state that a current or staff commodore must helm at all times. The wind blew a constant 15 knots and SYMPHONY was on her ear. We were second boat to the mark, third boat to finish, and got second in class. Staff Commodore Rick and Sheryl Lunsford and Staff Commodore Dale and Lesley Pelka crewed with us with Rick taking the helm for most of the on your ear leg to the mark. SYMPHONY had four staff commodores aboard; WAVELENGTH only had Commodore Lisa who could steer, and CAROLINE had Jr. Staff Commodore Jim and Dorothy Adriansen aboard with Staff Commodore Joe Vetrano. WAVELENGTH aced the start and the Race Committee commented on Lisa's big grin as she steered through the line. Anacapa Yacht Club also had three entries; host VYC had one. The two little clubs, PBYC and AnYC, buried the competition. Fishsticks rises again well, not quite. Last November it was reported that the race mark called "Fishsticks" was missing. Posses were sent out to find it to no avail. It hadn't washed up on a beach either. So, a new mark was constructed and deployed at great cost and bother. We went sailing on Richard's birthday with his cousin who was visiting from England. Rather than just meander around, we headed to the new mark to verify its GPS. About 100 feet from the new mark I saw something in the water. We investigated. The object was the old mark which was on station but awash. It had sunk, but not completely. I'm certain we were not the first people to see it; however, we were the first people to recognize what it was. If we had specifically gone out to look for it, we would probably not have found it. So, now it's a hazard to navigation. All the divers were out of the country. So PBYC provided an old, unused, inflatable mark and VYC's folks attached it to the old mark. Now the association needs to come up with a plan to either retrieve it or really sink it. Are any of you divers? WORTH REPEATING FROM LAST MONTH ED We still need help with the planning and execution of these races: Milt's Race on July 9th, and the Tri-point on August. Help includes mounting sponsor banners on the clubhouse in the beginning of June and removing them at the end of August, choosing/buying trophies for all three races, designing T-shirts for Milt's and Tri-point, preparing after race soup/food for all three races, preparing simple continental breakfast for the Sundays of Hardway and Tri-point, preparing a nice breakfast for Sunday morning of Milt's, manning the committee boat for Milt's and Tri-point, manning the finish line for all three races. We also need a safety boat for the beach catamaran class in Milt's and Tri point.

What interests you? PBYC wants to ask all of our members what sort of events you would like to have at the club. What will get you to come to your club? Attendance at the monthly meetings has been disappointing. We have some great cooks and there have been some interesting speakers. Where have you been? Please me, with suggestions. I will bring them to the Board. Thanks. Su Countess, Records Adminitrator, Birthday Chair & Staff Commodore GRAHAM & MICHELLE DAWSON CRUISING IN TURKEY ON A JENNEAU 42DS, RAHOPARA [TURKEY?
