COMMODORE'S COMMENTARY Lisa Hopper Happy May to you all! April brought no showers but it did bring some interesting events for PBYC ers. Ventura Isle Marina had its annual Chili Cook Off at PBYC this month. I had the good fortune to taste some very interesting chili concoctions. Most a little too hot for my east coast palate, but you didn't see me stopping even as I was fanning my mouth and begging for water (ok, beer). I was disappointed not to have an entry this year. Next year for sure. The place was packed and its always great to mingle with the folks from the marina. For the General Meeting program in April, Greg Farah did a great presentation on new sailboat design and construction. It was a small group, but he was pleased because we were his premiere audience. Even those of us who don't know a lot about sailing found it really interesting. Call me a faux sailor but when Greg talked about the trend toward the 'condominium' style boats, I was thinking 'no problem here.' Speaking of premieres, I rolled out Bow Watch, the new Commodore's weekly update. I know a lot of us get busy and lose track of what is coming up at PBYC. I hope you'll find it to be a useful tool. I'm anxious to hear your thoughts. For those who have upcoming bar hosting duties, please let me know if you have anything special planned so I can include it. I'm also hoping that it will be a reminder in case you've forgotten you are scheduled and can't make it for some reason. As summer approaches, more folks will be out and about and we like to make sure our doors are open for anyone who is interested in finding out more about PBYC or for visiting members from other clubs who find themselves in Ventura Harbor. If you are unable to fulfill your hosting night, it is your responsibility to find a replacement, but we are happy to help. Contact Su and she will send out soliciting a swap. Things are chugging along at PBYC as we head into May. The month started with the
ever popular Wine Sunday hosted by our own Bill Gibbs, fresh off his remarkable N2E victory. This coming weekend is the Mothers Day Brunch. If you haven't already received a flyer, its coming. As in the past it will be a potluck and we will be taking inventory of who would like to bring what. A great way to beat the Mothers Day crowds, it is always an enjoyable day with good food, better company, and on the deck, one of the best seats in the Harbor. The following week Los Padres Ski Club is hosting a Fiesta de Mayo party at PBYC which includes a boat tour, margaritas, and a Mexican feast. A flyer was sent out earlier. Contact Jeff Heath for more information. RSVPs are required. Jeff and Kappy Paulson will also be dinner hosts for the May 21st General Meeting which will also feature Maggie Hood sharing her recent Antigua Race Week adventure. And start getting your boats ready for the Memorial Day club cruise to Pelican! Many hands make light work. Many thanks to all who participated in and contributed to events this past month. I look forward to seeing you at PBYC, the place to be, in May! Lisa Hopper PBYC Commodore VIRTUES OF VICE COMMODORE
Jeff Olmstead I made the rounds of Opening Day ceremonies on April 2 and 3 in Ventura and Channel Islands harbors for the first time this year. It was a fun and interesting two days. Here are some unofficial awards I would give based on my observations: Best (loudest) cannon shot: VYC Most car alarms set off by cannon shot: PBYC Best rendition of National Anthem: Harbor Island YC Best souvenir (plastic clappers): Harbor Island YC Best Cake: CIWYC Best decorations: Channel Islands YC s Viking theme I missed Anacapa YC s ceremony but heard they did a good job, too. They had some joke about a block of ice from the harbor? It was a spoof of the apparent tradition of each club s Commodore asking their club Port Captain if the harbor is free of ice before officially opening the yachting season. Most clubs seemed to have some variation of it. We need to think of something for next year. I also noticed that many people wore lapel pins from yacht clubs or other sources on their blazers for decoration or conversation pieces. One man had a hoist of five or so flag-shaped pins on one side and several miscellaneous pins on the other side. My goal next year is to have a rack of remarkable pins on each lapel. How about we start a friendly contest to see who can get the most/best lapel pins by next Opening Day? I have another fun idea for our ceremony next year, but I ll have to see how much convincing the potential participants will need. On April 22 at the monthly club dinner and meeting, Greg Farahpresented a slide show on Advances in Sailboat Design and Construction. He is a representative for Beneteau Yachts, so most of the examples were from that company. He said that they are trying to build boats that will appeal to non-boaters, making them easier to sail with more roller-furling, broader hull forms resulting in more interior space and lower heeling angles, and modular interiors allowing for easier customization for buyers, among other features. It was an interesting show, but bring your checkbook if you want one: these features are only available on boats 50 feet and up right now. And Sharon s dinner of beef stew, with cream cake and fresh raspberry topping for dessert was delicious! Here is an update on my dinghy cover tale begun last month. Some of you have heard that my first mistake was not writing down or remembering the scale of the pattern that I made last fall and then failing to measure again last month, so that I ordered 7 yards of Sunbrella when I only needed 5½. That s better than the reverse, I suppose. After figuring that out, I managed to cut the three pieces to the right size eventually. I have friends in town with a better sewing machine than ours at home (it s older that I am!) so I strapped the material and ditty bag onto my motorcycle ;
and off I went. The first session of hemming all the edges went pretty well; no apparent major errors. But the next day, about halfway through sewing the pieces together, the machine suddenly quits sewing, instead just balling up the thread under the needle. After some careful disassembly, I could see what it was doing (not passing the needle thread around the bobbin) but couldn t figure out why. I couldn t stay to figure it out, but my friend s father is retired from Sears, so he came over to look at it and figured out that it wasn t threaded right. I had probably misthreaded it after rewinding the bobbin. I quickly finished it in my final session last weekend, took it back to the harbor, and it fit! Yay! But after proclaiming victory before the board meeting later that day, Su asked if I had put a second layer of material over the spots where it might chafe: bow eye, etc. Well, no. So I m not quite done, but almost! The end is nigh! Jeff RACE COMMITTEE Richard Countess Spring Series We had nine boats entered in the third and final race of this series held on April 9 th. With the weather forecast of knots of wind from the south east, rain
showers and a chance of thunderstorms, I gave the Spinnaker A fleet a relatively short course of 15.5 nm around Platform Gina, the Ventura Harbor Whistle buoy and the Chips mark, and a 13.1 nm course for the Spinnaker B fleet around Platform Gina. All boats finished within a relatively short window with elapsed times ranging from two hours to 2 hours and 36 minutes. Fortunately the rain showers failed to materialize. Finishing first and correcting out to first in the A fleet was Dave Boatner s J-35 RIVAL followed by Rod Abbott s Schock 35 TROUBLE MAKER in second place. Mike Hopper s J-22 MAJIC DRAGON corrected out to first in the B fleet approximately one and a half minutes ahead of John Roland s Pearson Flyer WILD FLYER. For the series, RIVAL finished in first place in the Spinnaker A fleet with 3 points, followed by TOUBLE MAKER in second place with 9 points. In the Spinnaker B fleet, Jim Albert s C & C 37 PARADISE FOUND finished in first place with 6 points, followed by MAJIC DRAGON in second place with 8 points. Three boats tied for the High Points Perpetual Trophy with 10 points each. They were MAGIC DRAGON, PARADISE FOUND, and RIVAL. I would like to thank the following PBYC members for their support with the race: Judy Nolde, Verne Haller and Jeff Heath on the race committee boat SYMPHONY with Susan and me; Jeff Olmstead for assisting me on the finish line; and Judy Nolde for preparing clam chowder and chili for the post-race festivities as well as for bar tending. Full race results are available on PBYC s web site. Race committee in foul weather gear for the third race of the Spring Series.

SU'S TIDBITS As I write this, Richard is on his way to New Jersey for his 50th college reunion. He was president of his class and headed the reunion planning committee. This year is also my 50th reunion; same university, different college.i'm not going. Richard and I were both members of the 200th graduating class of Rutgers University and, although we had not yet met, were both in the stadium in New Brunswick for that celebration in June Bill Gibbs' WAHOO had a very impressive first race, the Newport to Ensenada Race. WAHOO won her class. She also won three perpetual trophies: BEST CORRECTED ORCA - the President of NOSA trophy, BEST CORRECTED - CATAMARAN - the Stern- Choy trophy, and (drum roll, please) BEST CORRECTED ALL BOATS - the Tommy Bahama trophy. There were over 200 boats and WAHOO had the lowest corrected time of all those boats. Wow! PBYC has seen all of these trophies before as Bill has won them in AFTERBURNER. Wayne Hopkins' MISTRESS MINE finished but then retired. Wonder what happened? The Hopkins' daughter, Ashley's, boat, SWELL, also won a perpetual trophy, the Spitoon. That's kinda like our Endurance Award in Milt's Race. Ashley and a crew of her college girlfriends competed for the Carolyn Starr Trophy for all women crews was the first year that the Carolyn Starr trophy was awarded. I was on the all woman crew of CORSAIR skippered by Vickie Brewer. We won!!! The very first entry on that trophy is from PBYC. Congrats to all PBYC's racers wherever and whenever they race. [DITTO! -Ed]
The 2016 Island Series Notice of Race booklet is at the printer and will be mailed next week. Look for the info on our web site soon and please patronize our sponsors. We still need help with the planning and execution of these three events: the Hardway Race on June 4th, Milt's Race on July 9th, and the Tri-point on August. Help includes mounting sponsor banners on the clubhouse in the beginning of June and removing them at the end of August, choosing/buying trophies for all three races, designing T-shirts for Milt's and Tri-point, preparing after race soup/food for all three races, preparing simple continental breakfast for the Sundays of Hardway and Tri-point, preparing a nice breakfast for Sunday morning of Milt's, manning the committee boat for Milt's and Tri-point, manning the finish line for all three races. We also need a safety boat for the beach catamaran class in Milt's and Tri-point. PBYC wants to ask all of our members what sort of events you would like to have at the club. What interests you? What will get you to come to your club? Attendance at the monthly meetings has been disappointing. We have some great cooks and there have been some interesting speakers. Where have you been? Please me, rcountess@aol.com, with suggestions. I will bring them to the Board. Thanks. Su Countess, Records Adminitrator, Birthday Chair & Staff Commodore
April 23, 2016 California Boaters are encouraged to contact their elected representatives on the Assembly Appropriations Committee and to urge a no vote on AB 2092 [Frazier] in Committee unless the bill is amended so that recreational boaters funds will not be used to rid the waterways of abandoned commercial vessels. Please take action today. The bill could be heard next week, and must pass through committee prior to a May 27 deadline. Key issues: AB 2092 [Frazier] would target recreational boater funds for the cleanup of abandoned commercial vessels. Commercial vessels are much more expensive to clean-up and the cost of one vessel could exceed the entire amount of available funds. The owners of commercial vessels do not contribute to our fund only recreational vessel owners do. The demand for clean-up of recreational vessels already exceeds the amount of available funds. These vessels should remain the top priority at this time. There is no condition in the bill restricting the cleanup of abandoned commercial vessels to those that pose a danger to recreational boaters. Best, Jerry Desmond Director of Government Relations Recreational Boaters of California
