Commentary by the Commodore Thanks again to practically everyone for helping us stage a really enjoyable and warm Opening Day in April; many of our guests took the time to tell us that we were uniquely welcoming and fun, in that distinctive PBYC style. Fun and welcoming, in our world, usually also means "not stuffy" and "great food"... we all tried, on the first one. On the second one, we have to thank Karen Stager, and her really impressive food prep and hospitality team: Lisa, Dorothy, Joe, Cathy, Su, Judy, Sheryl and well, geez, just about everybody again. At our April meeting, we managed to confirm the particularly deep and impressive debt our club owes our monthly Golden Anchor winner, Dorothy Adriansen, for organizing, staging and gently cajoling everyone into line for our April trifecta -- the club clean-up day, opening day AND open house events. We also managed to use the monthly Fouled Prop award, to confirm the particularly deep and impressive debt owned by one of our bridge officers to his entire club staff, for omitting committee chairs from our Opening Day formal introductions. Pity da fool. It's not like I don't love you guys... May sees our race schedule spring to life, with the first of our Big Three races in the PBYC Island Series, the Hardway around Santa Cruz Island, on M a y 1 7 t h. P l e a s e s e e : and please see race chair Richard Countess or me, if you are available on that Saturday to help Richard's team at the race finish line -- or Lisa Hopper's intrepid racer-feeding squad. Both gigs can go well into Saturday night as this one can be a looong course. Please give us a hand on that Saturday if you can. We also expect to hear shortly from Cruise Director and Rear Commodore Chuck Braffett about confirmation for our club cruising plans for this summer! That's why we open that harbor, folks. That and the icebergs. In May we also have a few other official and unofficial events -- Sun. May 5/4: We awkwardly and unofficially invite folks to come up to the Club on Sunday afternoon, at 4 pm, to celebrate (a) Cinco de Mayo, (b) Sheryl Lunsford's birthday and (c) our limited math skills, in a not-really-part-of-the-calendar-butwhat-the-hell event that someone at the April meeting named "Cinco de Cuatro y Seis." Son la Cuatro! Um, OK, with enough cerveza, that will sound just fine to me. Sat. May 5/17. The Hardway Race, see above. Fri. May 5/30. Ventura Isle harbor, our landlord, hosts another sailing seminar at our club... and this one is Mike Pyzell... always a big turnout because, well, the only things that live around here who know the Santa Barabara channel better than Mike have flippers. Sat, May 31. PBYC dinner at 6:30 pm, featuring the hardcore-foodie stylings of the gracious Karen Stager (not to be missed), after our Board meeting at 4:30. NOTE, we moved this date back a week, so as not to conflict with Memorial Day weekend. See you on the water! Even if it's soda water. Jamie Clark PBYC Commodore

Good Friends, Welcome to the month of May! As I venture out about our beautiful community the flowers are in bloom from the April showers we enjoyed. If I may be permitted to tell a story Dorothy and I spent almost six years in Washington, DC during 2006 to We lived just on the other side of Arlington, Virginia in a place called Falls Church. Our boat, a McCurdy & Rhodes designed Seafarer 22 was wet slipped at the Washington Sailing Marina along the Potomac. We sailed along the tidal basin and down to Old Town Alexandria. We enjoyed the cherry blossoms and historical monuments. We owned a small granite house that sat along a creek just 8 miles from the marina. There really was a church called The Falls Church! George Washington was a vestryman in 1763 at the church, which was located just up the hill from our home. We understood from historical accounts that dignitaries hunted fox along the winding creek, which ran alongside our house. My point in all this is the flowers in May! In Falls Church we tried to plant flowers so that we had something blooming all year long, and not just in May. As I look around our little sailing port along the Channel Islands, I feel blessed to be in such a wonderful place! Boating is in full swing and people are getting out to enjoy the islands! Opening Day at PBYC was held April 5 and the yachting season got off to a Bang! -- Thanks to Cannoneer Dale Pelka. The noise from the tiny cannon set off car alarms in the PBYC parking lot ahead of the presentation of the Colors. We were honored to have the Hueneme High School Naval JROTC Cadet Color Guard, under the direction of Chief Hayes, present colors for our members and guests. This is always a favorite moment in the program for me as I watch young men and women march in formation to the cadence of the Sergeant, with individual unit members carrying rifles to safeguard the flag. Those in attendance at Opening Day saw Sheryl Lunsford provide the Pledge of Allegiance, while Maura O'Connor sang the National Anthem. Our own Judy Nolde gave the invocation prior to the colors being retired by Chief Hayes' unit. The balance of the program included Jamie's presentation of the PBYC leadership and the Vice- Commodore (Ahem!) reading a long list of guests. Skipper Mike Hopper (J-22 Turbo MaJic Dragon) was awarded Second Place in the Association of Santa Barbara Channel Yacht Clubs High Points Trophy, which was presented by ASBCYC Commodore and PBYC Staff Commodore Cindi Mathieu. Invited guests included dignitaries, member associations and officials from nearby yacht clubs who were treated to champagne, orange juice and Painkillers upon their arrival to the PBYC second floor! Among the glitterati enjoying morning eye-openers and brunch were Commodore Don Lehman, Commodore Steve Weiss and Laura, Commodore Keith Moore and MaryAnn, ASBCYC Commodore Cindi Mathieu and Le Trout, Commodore Ilona Fellows and Walt, Vice-Commodore Peter Glick and Lynne, and Commodore Larry Leveille. Behind the scenes a group of dedicated volunteers provided From the Vice Commodore food for the morning brunch and the afternoon Open House. Social Director and gourmand Karen Stager oversaw the handcrafted steak sliders with creamy horseradish spread, artisan cheeses cut by yours truly, veggies, rolls, broccoli salad, and so much more. A well-placed source told me that Karen and Maura stayed up most of the night before Opening Day to bake miniature cupcakes that were all but devoured before we reached the noon hour. We are grateful to have a wonderful group of members who provide service to the club during these high occupancy special events! So many people to thank! Tip 'o the Hat to bar manager Rob Skaar for countless hours leading up to and after Opening Day. The Galley was in ship-shape thanks to Dorothy and her crew. I am afraid that I will forget so many others who dedicated a weekend to the club. But, here goes Lisa, Dorothy, Joe, Cathy, Su, Richard, Judy, David, Sheryl, Rick, Karen, Rob, Kappy, Jeff, Chuck, Dale, Jamie, Maura, Lesley, Maggie, and Bob! Before I forget, I want to recognize fellow CPA and former Treasurer Lesley Pelka. Lesley was awarded the PBYC Founder's Honor during Opening Day ceremonies. Husband and all-around good guy Dale Pelka accepted the award on behalf of Lesley who was not able to attend the event. Way to go, Lesley! A well deserved award! On April 26, we held our general membership meeting, which was hosted by Treasurer Joe Vetrano and Cathy. Joe and Cathy spent the day preparing pork carnitas. Cathy was busy in the kitchen while Joe attended to the board meeting. Joe was seen running to the galley on the half hour until the dinner bell rang. The menu was very appropriate given this month's Newport to Ensenada International Ocean Yacht Race. Members enjoyed carnitas, rice and black beans, avocado and margaritas. Dessert included ice cream and chocolate brownies. There are many social events on the horizon at PBYC. Please check our calendar! Web Mistress and Clothesline Chair Sheryl Lunsford reported she is ordering your favorite PBYC logo items for the Clothesline. The Membership chair continues to be a responsibility for all of us -- as is, the photography position. If you are interested in filling either post please give me a call. Dorothy and I had the opportunity to host the bar on Sunday, April 27. We set up shop at 2pm ahead of the crowd! We tried the electric chair lift, which worked perfectly. I want to again thank the Countess' for their generous contribution to the Club. While we were tending bar, fellow members Jeff Heath and Kappy Paulson stopped by to share the afternoon sun and brisk wind. Bar Manager Rob Skaar also dropped in to say hello and enjoy the company. We exchanged news reports about the Newport to Ensenada International Ocean Yacht Race. Unfortunately, PBYC yachts did not prevail. I was not involved in N2E this year; however, my limited understanding is that N2E was well attended. Besides the usual suspects like Afterburner, Orange, Staghound, Wild Thing III, and Taxi Dancer the race saw newcomers Mod70 Orion and Orma60 Mighty Merloe. Orion (7:40:38) edged out Merloe (7:42:28) by a very small margin of victory, elapsed time, that is. To it's credit, Orion won line honors.

Well, that's the report from here. Until next time, enjoy the outdoors with gardening, wine making, potting flowers, SUP, boating, sailboat racing or just hanging ten! Jim Adriansen J PBYC Vice Commodore

Race Report Richard Countess ISLAND SERIES The Notice of Race for PBYC's 15th Annual Island Series was mailed to both racers and our sponsors in mid-april. You can view the NOR with all our sponsors' ads on PBYC's website thanks to our web mistress Sheryl Lunsford. The series starts with the Hardway race that we cosponsor with the Santa Barbara Sailing Club on May 17th, followed by the Milt Ingram Trophy race on July 12th, and the Tri-Point Ocean race on August 16th. HARDWAY RACE I would like to thank Lisa Hopper for volunteering to supervise the post-race food for Saturday evening and Cindi Mathieu for volunteering to organize the continental breakfast for the trophy award ceremony on Sunday. SBSC UP-COMING LOCAL RACES May 3 AYC's Anacapa to Port (Anacapa #1) May 10 PCYC's Pac Cor Cup #2 (VCORC Random Leg) May 17/18 PBYC/SBSC's Hardway Race (Island Series #1) June 1 VYC's Commodore Classic June 7 VYC's Governor's Cup June 14 AYC's Platform A June 21 PCYC's Pac Cor Cup #3 (Yachting Cup: windward/leeward) June 28 VSC's Frenchy's Rum Run June 28/29 ChIYC's Channel Islands to Marina del Rey is in charge of the start of the race which leaves our club with getting volunteers for the finish line. This is a critical issue since some of our members will be out of town that weekend and others will be racing. Chuck Braffett and I will be contacting the membership seeking for volunteers. The first to volunteer will get their choice of time slots. Since some of the boats that race the 67-nm course around Santa Cruz Island finish in the early morning hours of Sunday, I requested that the Board authorize me to rent a motor home for the finish line. Needless to say, the Board nixed this idea and offered me $10 to buy a pup tent. Therefore, if anyone has a motor home we could use, please contact me.

Su s Tidbits The Ensenada Race was not to be for Team PBYC this year. Both AFTERBURNER and ORANGE broke. No one was hurt and both will be back in action soon. A lot of other local boats DNF'd as well. I wonder what the stories were. There was more wind than is typical for that race. I'm sure Bill will give us the scoop in his column. Opening Day was fabulous. One of the best. What other yacht club treated the Blue Blazer Brigade to filet mignon sliders? Karen Stager and crew deserve a huge hug. I really enjoyed visiting with Karen Boston, widow of S/C Jerry, who was in town from New Mexico visiting family. Karen and Jerry cruised extensively in their sailboat FELICITY. They spent time in Panama, as did Chuck Braffett. Karen and Chuck found lots to talk about. Getting the Island Series Notice of Race booklet created, printed, and mailed was more than the usual pain. I had to use 3 computers and 2.5 different pdf programs, and still had a couple of snafus. The online form Submit button just won't work. The worst snafu was that new sponsor Maggie Hood's name/address/phone disappeared off the sponsor page. Sincere apologies, Maggie. Not only was there an error on that page, but the photo caption disappeared off another page, and the Tower Race info off a third page. When I looked at the file on my computer and printed a sample on my printer, all info was present. When the printer printed from that exact same file poof, gone. Any ideas what went wrong, PBYC geeks? Update on me: I am regaining strength and movement in my right wrist. One big milestone is being able to open a bottle of wine. Still don't have enough bend in the wrist to do push-ups, 'though. The chair lift works great. Don't be afraid to use it. One of our guests at the Open House following Opening Day used it. He arrived in a wheelchair having broken his foot. Dorothy Adriansen will soon have knee surgery, for which we all wish her well. Dorothy will likely use it temporarily as she heals.

Notes from the Editor Well, it didn t turn out as I expected. We had a fast transit down to Newport Beach the week before the race. Day before N2E, we went out to dinner with the crew, only a little concerned about the gale coming thru race night. You may recall the race is on Friday, and we had plans to return to San Diego Saturday, so I could catch a flight to Israel for work, Sunday. Weather wasn t cooperating. So I extended my slip in Ensenada and arranged a van to get us to San Diego Sunday morning. Race day was lovely with wind, only it was south wind. We went out into winds gusting to 20 with our new sails. Being overpowered before the start in a traffic choked area is not my favorite activity. We were careful and were approaching our start when BAMM! (#1) and a jib block exploded. A Chinese firedrill ensued as crew rushed to swap in a snatch block. Not a great thing when close hauled. This lead to a late start and a blown first tack. We got settled down and began to play catch up. The big boys Orion and Mighty Merloe had left town already. After an hour to weather we had caught and passed the lead monos and remaining multis. Still a long weather leg ahead, but at least good wind. BAMM! (#2) and the main sail falls about 2 hours into the race. The headboard welds had failed on the old headboard I had reused with the new sail (stupid!). We discussed a jury rig. This meant someone going up the 82 mast in pretty bumpy seas. We watched the mast head whipping thru 12 arcs. And then with halyard recovered, we could lash something up, that might chafe thru on the sharp broken edges, on a black night in an approaching gale. This is not my definition of recreational racing. I made the call and we headed back to Newport Beach. I cancelled van, hotel, slips and changed my flight to LAX. After a couple hours of motoring, we got a mooring, examined the damage, took the main off, cut off the headboard and left AB in Newport Beach. We drove home. Sunday I flew to Israel. Friends got the headboard to a machine shop for me and cut off the damaged area to a usable shape, shipped back to the sailmaker and re-installed. They delivered the sail to the boat. I landed LAX Friday 10 AM, got picked up and taken to NPB with crew, we spent 4 hours getting the battens in and sail installed, 2 more crew arrived and we shoved off for Ventura about 8:30 PM. Lovely motorsailing, arriving Saturday 8 AM. night. I slept well Saturday Now I just need to get through my daughters wedding this weekend and life can settle down a bit. Your Editor, Bill Gibbs
