3 COMMODORE'S COMMENTARY Jim Adriansen Friends, The month of May was a busy time for our club. Looking back we honored those who died while serving in the country s armed forces; held a Kentucky Derby Party; a Mother s Day brunch; sponsored The Hardway Race; had a board and general membership meeting; cruised to Smugglers Cove; and, raced in the Commodore s Classic. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who had a hand in making these events a success. I would publically like to single out Rear Commodore Karen Stager who organized and cooked for the brunch, cooked for the Derby, worked the race and chaired the board and membership meetings and whatever else she may have had a hand in around here! Wow that s commitment! You deserve a break, my friend! This month s calendar is not so filled to capacity. Be sure to turn out for the Father s Day brunch hosted by Judy and David Nolde on June 21, and the general membership meeting on June 27! I will be back to run things and Board member Jeff Heath and Kappy Paulson are on tap for food. They are sure to whip up a tasty meal. By the way, I have a pocketful of island tours courtesy of our friends at Island Packers (IP). Come to the meeting for a chance to win one of these cruises to the Islands aboard IP s very special boat! As we say must be present to win! In member news, Bill Gibbs took delivery of WAHOO, a Schionning G Force 1400 done in carbon. Bill has an Automatic Identification System (AIS) onboard so you can track him when it s on. His call sign is WDH9937. He looks to be having a great time; some of his regular crew is assisting with the passages, etc. I am expecting pictures of his four trips up the gigantic mast, soon! To follow Bill s Great Adventure aboard WAHOO, you can go to this website, it has a nice picture of his yacht: ships/ shipid: /mmsi: / imo:0/vessel:wahoo Of course, you can also find him periodically on Facebook, as well, where you will see exciting and pleasurable photos of his trip. When I charted him last, he had left the British Virgin Islands (BVI) and made passage to the volcanic island Isla Guadalupe. Good luck, Bill! The first Saturday in May, Dorothy and I hosted the Kentucky Derby Party. We were joined by special guests Commodore Sarah Freifeld and Richard, from the Channel Islands Women s Sailing Association (CIWSA); and, Rear Commodore Pam Yerger and friend, Rose also from CIWSA.

4 COMMODORE'S COMMENTARY continued Sarah and Pam are always a lot of fun to hang around with and they participated in the hat contest. Sarah nearly won! Seen enjoying Kentucky Burgoo and Hot Browns were David and Judy Nolde, Rick and Sheryl Lunsford and Mark Mandel. Derby Pie was a hit and more than I can say for my Burgoo. Dining on Derby fare with Judy and David was Jim McClurkin. Sheryl looked to be enjoying the race along with Lisa Hopper and friend, Karen Engelsen. You will remember Karen who joined us for the St. Paddy s Day celebration and won the limerick contest! Karen and Lisa were working on a Derby limerick, had a few lines done, but never finished. Maybe eventually? Sipping mint juleps especially prepared by Judy were Joanne Tague, Jamie Clark and Maura O Connor. Since that eventful first Saturday in May, the winner of the Kentucky Derby has gone on to win the Preakness in Baltimore. So, we will have an opportunity to see if we get a new Triple Crown winner on June 6th at the Belmont in New York. Thank you to all our members who assisted the PBYC race committee during the Hardway race. It takes a village to sponsor these professional races. Special thanks to Joe and Cathy Vetrano for loaning their RV at the finish line. I can tell you, that you made one person very happy! Our association with the Santa Barbara Sailing Club, who cosponsored, is another great benefit to membership at PBYC! They are always a fun group to hang with and race sailboats. Well my friends, that s it from where I sit. Hope you have an enjoyable summer wherever your travel plans may take you. Do come out soon and join us for good food and fantastic sunsets at PBYC! As always, Dorothy and I wish you well. Until next time Jim Adriansen, Commodore

5 THE VIRTUES OF VICE (COMMODORE) VIEW FROM THE REAR (COMMODORE) Lisa Hopper, Vice Commodore Karen Stager, Rear Commodore According to our best sources, Vice Commodore Lisa and Rear Commodore Karen are still convalescing from their extraordinary work on our 2015 PBYC Opening Day events. They are taking all therapeutic steps needed for a full recovery of their Fore N Aft columns by next month. Your Editors

7 RECOGNIZE RACERS! PBYC RACE COMMITTEE REPORT HARDWAY RACE We had seventeen boats for the 35th Annual Hardway Race held on May 16th. Our co host Santa Barbara Sailing Club started the race in Santa Barbara and PBYC had the responsibility of finishing the boats in Ventura. With VELERO the only boat entered in the non spinnaker class, skipper Brent Swanson elected to sail with the spinnaker boats around Anacapa Island, a distance of 47 nm instead of a much shorter course of 24 nm down the coast. Four boats elected to sail the 67 nm course around Santa Cruz Island with the first finisher Bernie Girod s Farr 400 ROCK N ROLL sailing across the finish line at 9:43 PM for an elapsed time of 10 hours and 43 minutes. The last boat in this class was Dwight Rowe s Olson 40 BUENA VISTA that finished at 2:40 Sunday morning. The winner of this fleet was Dr. Laura Schlessinger s J 125 WARRIOR. The competition between the three spinnaker fleets that sailed around Anacapa Island was very tight with Tom Hudson s Santa Cruz 27 E TICKET, that finished first in the A Fleet, correcting out just 15 seconds ahead of Bengt Johansson s J 24 SCALLYWAG, that finished first in the C Fleet, and 38 seconds ahead of Randy Alcorn s Cal 2 29 OUTPATIENT also in the C Fleet. The first place boat in the Spinnaker B fleet was Mike Leary s J 30 PANGEA. Full race results are posted on PBYC s web site: I would like to thank Joe Vetrano for providing his camper van for the finish line. It sure beats sitting in the front seat of a car juggling clip boards, horns and flash lights. I also want to thank our finishing crews: Dale Pelka and Rob Skaar for volunteering for the 4 to 6 PM shift (I gave them a pass when I realized that no boat would finish before 7 PM), Joe Vetrano and Paul Martson for the 6 to 8 PM shift, Karen Stager who worked with me on the 8 to 10 PM shift when we finished all but two of the boats, and Jeff Heath and Kappy Paulson for the 10 PM to midnight shift. And finally I want to thank Judy Nolde for keeping the bar open from 5 PM on Saturday to 2 AM on Sunday and providing the delicious homemade clam chowder for the racers on Saturday and Sheryl Lunsford for providing the continental breakfast for the trophy presentation on Sunday morning. I am including two photos from the race in the newsletter. The first (next page) is a photo of E TICKET at the finish line taken by Paul Martson and the second (below) is a photo of me presenting a trophy to Dwight Rowe, skipper of BUENA VISTA, who like me had less than four hours sleep before the trophy presentation. Richard Countess, PBYC Race Committee Chair

11 SU's TIDBITS If you missed the May monthly meeting you missed great food and an interesting program. Lesley did make her potato salad and the strawberries in the pie were so big they begged to be eaten with knife and fork. Jeff Olmstead made a presentation on an Earthwatch expedition in which he participated in South America. Earthwatch runs scientific research expeditions where volunteers join respected scientists in the field to investigate critical environmental issues facing our changing planet. The volunteers make hands on contributions to research while experiencing the cultural and natural wonders of places around the globe. Jeff s job was counting flora and fauna in a sensitive river habitat. His photos were gorgeous, especially the ones showing water so still that it perfectly mirrored riverbank, boats, etc. This was not Jeff s first Earthwatch trip. Yay, Jeff! If you would like to learn more, go to The Hardway Race is history. It carried on its tradition of being either a snoozer or a bruiser, or both in the same race. WARRIOR saw 23 knots of boatspeed behind Santa Cruz, while OUT PATIENT didn t reach the west end of Anacapa until 7:30. I know Richard thanked the support troops. Rear Commodore Karen got her introduction to finish line work on the busiest shift. At least it wasn t boring. There are one large and two extra large polo shirts left to sell. Speaking of shirts, please see the flyer elsewhere in this issue soliciting designs for the Milt Ingram Trophy Race on July 11th and the Tri point Ocean Race on August 15th. I know we have a number of artistically gifted members. I am not one. Please help us make the clothing for those races memorable. Speaking of Milt s Race, it s not too early to plan. It is not as long as the Hardway, so no one will be asked to man the finish line in the weeeeee hours. However, we will need the usual complement of volunteers. So please check your calendars and think how you can help. End of commercial. Two laptops at once just not being enough, Su also recently installed a Cray 2 prototype in her kitchen to keep up with club records. Adding to the long list of why aging sucks, I got my driver s license renewal in the mail. I have to take the written and vision tests because I am over 70. So I downloaded the driver s manual. The practice tests are so easy, I don t see how anyone with two brain cells to rub together could fail. (And yet somehow we are surrounded including on the highways with folks who do so every day. Ed.) BOAT is an acronym for bring on another thousand. We have a 16 foot electric boat here on Westlake lake. It s a 1991 model and badly needed some maintenance including a new canvas cockpit cover. $795! We have canvas on SYMPHONY that cost less. But it s a captive market here. There s only one supplier. Next time I ll take the old canvas to Ventura and shop the many canvas shops in the area. Now we need to replace the boards on the dock. There s a $100 permit plus rules about materials, etc. As Bill Gibbs has said, Sheesh. Su Countess, Records Administrator

19 FROM THE DESK OF THE FORE 'N' AFT EDITOR(S) Once again we bring you a report from our intrepid cruiser Bill Gibbs, en route (but stopping back through home and planning to race during the breaks... check out those last two paragraphs). Jamie Clark, City Desk, Fore N Aft The adventure is well underway. I traveled to Road Town Tortola late April and received WAHOO from a freighter. We stepped the mast and moved to a slip. We had to order a dinghy from St Martin, none on Tortola. We spent 10 days with assembly and corrections. Various rigging, electronics, and plumbing work. Lots of cleanup from the prior transit to Cape Town and freighter trip. Friends arrived for a week of local islands in BVI. Norman Island, Cooper Island, Virgin Gorda, and Jost van Dyke. Every day brought new issues to correct. The flooded hull was scary, turned out there were no check valves on the bilge pumps. On the last leg back to Tortola we lost a side stay (very scary) and almost the rig (I'm a very lucky guy), and then an engine. These are only 20 mile legs we've been sailing. Got to Nanny Cay, Tortola for another week of repairs. Learning to dock has been a challenge in these very tight marinas. Windage and sideslip are all different. Picked up and repaired a few scratches. After a month on Tortola 3 of us took off for Deshaires, Guadaloupe, about a 220 nm rhumline upwind leg. Winds were , seas were 3 6'. The Autopilot worked in 80% of the conditions. The rest we hand steered. Took us 34 hours to sail about 270 nm. Several chafe problems, reef line clear thru, but we caught it first. Re tensioning rig at sea was fun. AIS helped with our close night freighter crossing. 5 days in Deshaires working on the new fix it list. A group of friends arrived yesterday to help us move on down to Point a Pitre, Guadaloupe. I plan to fly home for 10 days. Time to see my wife and family, and stick my head in to the office. Got a 38th anniversary to celebrate. After enjoying Guadaloupe, we are off to Bonaire then Curacao, where WAHOO will spend a few months waiting out hurricane season. I'll be in CA racing AFTERBURNER, who I then have to get

20 FROM THE DESK OF THE FORE 'N' AFT EDITOR(S): VOYAGE OF THE WAHOO continued serious about selling. WAHOO is a brilliant design and construction. She is very stiff and light. She sails great. She anchors well. Strong mast. The builder rushed the fit out, because this was his last deadline and he was 4 months behind schedule. Lots of unfinished or poorly completed stuff, mostly untested. Which was no surprise. So far so good. Bill WAHOO
