Commentary by the Commodore Saturday May 31: Monthly dinner meeting and Board meeting. It's Memorial Day weekend as I write, so I hope all are happily celebrating, relaxing or cruising in their own way. Personally I am "cruising" Fly-Over Land this week but will be returning to sunny Cali before June gets started. Welcome to our new members (and sailors) Tom Benham and Andrea Miller. Stop by and say hello at one of our upcoming meetings Thanks again to all of our intrepid and reliable team who -- unlike me -- showed up and helped out at the Hardway Race. As a small club, we're always stretched to put on first-class events; we have consistently managed to do so -- but can't so so without everyone's assistance Please read Su's Tidbits column, as I can't add anything to the points she makes there. Coming up, please note these upcoming events. Announcements will be out for each one shortly.. Mother s day Sunday June 8: Wine Tasting Sunday with the inimitable Bill Gibbs Saturday June 21: Club Luau: for details please see our Chief Luau Officer Joe Vetrano. Sunday June 22: CIYC disabled veterans' event: see notice. Saturday June 28: Swap Meet (morning) in the parking lot near the club, hosted by Ventura Isle Harbor. not a bad flea market for used marine equipment, and we will probably do PBYC donuts and coffee there again It was a hit last year. Saturday June 28: Monthly dinner meeting and Board meeting. Wishing you all the speed of Gibbs, the resilience of Haller and the sense of humor of Lunsford out there on the water! See you at the club. Jamie Clark PBYC Commodore

Good Friends, I took the month of May off from racing to help support racing, instead. Mike Hopper did just fine without me. With all the rock stars out there, I hope to work my way back onto the boat soon! Indeed, I took off from racing and had the pleasure of working with Richard & Su Countess on the PBYC co-sponsored Hardway Race. It was one of the most closely contested Hardway Races in years. Without a doubt, it was a great way to see the other side of racing -- helping out on the bar, galley and finish line. It was well worth it to me not being able to share in the exciting stories of kts of wind and big seas. The work that goes into putting on a Yacht Club sponsored series event is huge and I wanted to be there to experience it first hand! To their credit racers are always thankful. They leave smiling, laughing, joking their hunger and thirst satisfied always parting with a hearty - Thank You! Until next time Before I go on, I would like to thank our corporate sponsors for helping underwrite the Island Series races. My sincere appreciation to all of you! Back at the club, Richard and Su were the consummate professionals -- calm, cool and collected as the event wore on into the long night. Others less obvious than these two stalwarts were behind the scenes. Without member volunteers it just could not be possible. Tips of the Hat to Joe & Cathy; Rob; future sailors Savannah & Maddy; Dale & Lesley; Tom; Eric & Diana; Cindi; and Lisa for all the hard work and support. It was around 2 a.m. Sunday morning when I left Richard, Su and Lisa to close up shop. I was back at 9 a.m. to attend the awards ceremony. Richard, Cindi and others were already there getting things in order. Again, thank you! PBYC hosted a Mother's Day brunch on May 11th. I hope you were able to attend, if not please join us next year. My mother also named Dorothy, From the Vice Commodore accompanied Dorothy and me. Whew! Members and guests enjoyed a wonderful mid-morning fare including Eggs Benedict Arnold, chili egg puff, cinnamon rolls, vegetable frittata, grape salad, hash brown casserole, bacon, sausage, fruit, pastries, and much more. Those seen dining on the second floor at PBYC included Commodore Jaime Clark and Maura O'Connor and guest; Richard and Su Countess; Karen Stager with son and daughter; Cindi Mathieu and Le Trout; Joe and Cathy Vetrano; Rob Skaar; Dale and Lesley Pelka; Jeff Olmstead; Lisa and Mike Hopper with their son; David and Judy Nolde and guests. Joe and I tended to the guests, mixing eye openers -- Bloody Mary's and his world famous Pain Killers. It was fun; I sold the last Pain Killer without too much effort! I am looking forward to June 21st and what I understand will be a resurrection of the famed Jimmy Buffet Party. Joe and Cathy have got everyone interested in a big JB celebration. Music, cheeseburgers, and Paradise! I understand the SoCal WETA fleet will be having its 2nd Annual WETA Performance Camp that weekend and have decided to join the crowd! Come by and celebrate the summer! Well, short and sweet this month! Dorothy and I offer you our best in June. If I can do anything for you, please call. Why not come by your club and enjoy the panoramic views, fresh air and wonderful company of fellow members? Warm regards, Jim Adriansen J PBYC Vice Commodore

View From The Rear Ahoy from the far reaches of Ventura Harbor. Just finished a two week retreat for work (theme was disconnect) with no cell phones, nor internet. Got to Santa Barbara Thursday, provisioned and readied the boat Friday and off to Prisoners cove Saturday. After motoring to Santa Cruz island, spouts were spotted! Had a pod of at least a dozen grey whales cross our bow. Many a spout did fly and much waving of tales were beheld. After two attempts at anchoring, the third held and we setup for the evening. In the waters about the boat, we got to watch many different fishes, a school of sting rays and a curious seal that kept a watchful eye on the intruders to his kelp bed. The next day, we dinked out to the island for a hike. Much to our pleasant surprise, we spotted the rare Island Fox on the way back. That's two firsts for me on my trips to Santa Cruz. Unfortunately, when we got back to the boat, the house batteries were dead and wouldn't charge so we cut the trip short. Safely back ashore (after watching some dolphins play in the bow wake) it was time to put away all the leftovers (was planning to feed guests). It was a really lovely trip with outstanding weather and nature showed all a good time. Chuck Braffett PBYC Rear Commodore The brunch

Race Report Richard Countess HARDWAY RACE We had 21 boats enter the 34th Annual Hardway Race co-sponsored with the Santa Barbara Sailing Club (SBSC) on May 17. SBSC started the race with five boats entered in the 67-nm race around Santa Cruz Island, 14 boats entered in the 47-nm race around Anacapa Island (2 ORCA boats, 7 boats in Spin A, and 5 boats in Spin B), and two non-spinnaker boats entered in the 24-nm race down the coast. Susan and I took SYMPHONY, our sailboat, up to Santa Barbara on May 16th to celebrate my birthday and participate with the registration and skippers' meeting and then returned to Ventura on the 17th. Based on the war stories we heard from the racers back at PBYC after the race, winds varied from 0 to 45 knots and the seas at the west end of Santa Cruz and Anacapa Islands were huge preventing several boats from completing the race. Bill Gibbs' AFTERBURNER (AB) was the first boat to finish at 3:56:38 with an elapsed time of just under 4 hours 42 minutes for their 47-nm course. Bill set the course record in 2011 with an elapsed time of 3 hours 26 minutes. Maggie Hood, crew member on AB, stated that it was a very wet ride. Mike Hopper's MAJIC DRAGON corrected out over all spinnaker boats sailing around Anacapa Island; Verne Haller's Я ESCAPE took first in the NS fleet; and Tom Parker's TAXI DANCER, a 68' sled, finished first (at 11:07 PM) and first on corrected time (11 hours 37 minutes) for the boats sailing the Hardway course around Santa Cruz Island. Dr. Laura Schlessinger's KATANA holds the course record for the Hardway course finishing at 6:10 PM in I would like to thank the following PBYC members: Dale and Lesley Pelka, Rob Skaar and his daughters Savannah and Madeline, Joe and Cathy Vetrano, and Eric Jones (visiting from Hawaii) for assisting me on the finish line and Cindi Mathieu for preparing the continental breakfast for the trophy award ceremony on Sunday. The real heroes of the weekend were Jim Adriansen who bartended from 4 PM to 2 AM Sunday morning plus spending a shift on the finish line, and Lisa Hopper who prepared the post-race food for Saturday evening and kept the club open with Susan until 3 AM Sunday morning. The full race results are on PBYC's web site. 17 Su s Tidbits I'm sure Richard will cover the Hardway Race in his column; however, I want to crow about PBYC racers' results. We had 3 entries and got 3 firsts: AFTERBURNER in the ORCA Class, Я ESCAPE in the Non-spinnaker Class and (trumpets, please) MAJIC DRAGON in the Coastwise Spinnaker Class B. MAJIC DRAGON not only took first in her class, but first overall beating all the A boats. We motor-sailed up to Santa Barbara on Friday, 5/16 (Richard's birthday), caroused with the Hardway racers, then motor-sailed back to Ventura while the racers challenged the various courses on Saturday. The wind was on the nose both ways for us. We were at the fuel dock when AFTERBURNER called in to finish. Luckily the Pelkas were at the club getting ready for their 4-6 shift on the finish line. If they had not been able to cover 'BURNER's finish, we were prepared to hover SYMPHONY on the finish line to time our first finisher. This was the first time we had used our boat in over 4 months and we proved both that my wrist is up to doing the tasks necessary to sail her, but that SYMPHONY is an awesome boat. Everything worked perfectly. I'm going to get on my soapbox, now. PBYC is a small club. We run a very ambitious race program that is well respected in the racing community. We cannot run our races without help, lots of help. Although Dale and Lesley, Rob Skaar, Joe and The Weta Report Cathy, and Eric Jones (in town from Hawaii to visit family) helped on the finish line, Lisa Hopper and Jim Adriansen had virtually no help for many hours back at the club. New member, Tom Benham, worked the bar with Jim early on. Thank you, Tom. Jim should have been at home with Dorothy who had just had knee surgery. Members, PLEASE volunteer to help with our races. You will be busy, but the racers are an interesting bunch with interesting stories to tell. And they really appreciate our hospitality. Lisa's hamburger/vegetable soup was a big hit Hardway Saturday night. I wish I had a photo of Lisa's expression when TAXI DANCER's 16-person crew attacked the soup. OMG. We're gonna run out. We didn't. Thank you, Lisa. I had my share, too. I hope you all enjoyed Memorial Day weekend. Richard and I spent Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at PCYC judging the Olson 30 Nationals. Eight races; one protest. The Olson 30 association put on a first class event, and I say this not because they comped the judges to food, drink, and shirts. The atmosphere was very positive throughout. There were folks from several yacht clubs helping including our Mike Hopper who worked on race committee on Sunday. Of course PCYC has paid staff manning the bar and food service, but it still takes many volunteers to run successful racing events regardless of the size of the club. On May!7 & 18 (the same weekend as the Hard Way) I took the two PPS Wetas up to Santa Barbara for the Skiff Festival. I raced one of the PPS Wetas and Paul had chartered out the other one. We had a total of 6 Wetas racing. Sadly, the wind didn't cooperate and the regatta was a drifting match. Only the last race on Sunday had enough wind to get us out on the trampolines of our little trimarans. Bruce Fleming, President of the Weta North American Assn. won the regatta with 5 bullets. I came in second with 13 points. Bob Shirley Weta #147, Empress Ventura CA.

Notes from the Editor May was a great month. I brought Afterburner from NPB. I married off my oldest daughter. It was a wonderful couple day event in Paso Robles. Then there was the Hardway race. About as much fun as you can legally have. Here is my report: ---- Friday we had a lovely motor up to Santa Barbara, arriving in time for beers at Union Ale, before more crew showed up by train at 3 PM. Off to the funk zone for a tasting at Municipal Wine Co., and the wine bar La Marchands, for a bottle of French Mourvedre. Then over to the Palace Grill for a great cajun dinner. Back to the harbor for more crew around 8, taking them for drinks at SBYC, where we old guys enjoyed sparkling water, having had enough. While the young guys stayed out late partying, we old guys went to bed on AB. Sat morning we rose early, laughed at the hung over young guys and went off to breakfast at In-the-Alley (ex-minnow). Great breakfast burritos. Maggie arrived, boat prepped, off to the start. Sailflow says we will miss all the strong winds. (so much for Sailflow) 4 classes, the Santa Cruz Hardway, ORCA & Spinnakers around Anacapa, and a shore course for non-spin. We were the 4th start. We had a good start at 11:15 in 7 knots of unforecast east breeze. East? Port close hauled is favored. Winds shift & drop and soon we are doing 2-3 knots with the pack, unable to pull away. An hour in and we aren't to the oil rigs yet. Option 1 is foot off outside to get south and find the forecast west winds first. Option 2 is tack over, go inside and get ready for a big W shift to lift you to Anacapa. I think we were the only boat taking Option 3, sticking to the rhumbline, most boats went hard south to get outside. A breeze filled in from the east (???) We are scooting along at 10 knots in wind no one else has. Sweet! Soon they are all very small. We went through a quick transition to SW wind, and the wind builds. Soon we are beam reaching in TWS, hitting 24 knots BS. Crew worried about my "low" course, but I promised a wind drop and a lift, which started, as promised, a few miles out from Anacapa. We hit the west tip perfectly, unfurled the screecher for the back side. Had a few slow areas to get thru but nothing bad. We put in a reef for the leg home. The last island leg lifted us right to the arch. Where we got hammered by some very impressive puffs. There was some wind around. Leaving the island wind built to a fun 20 TWS beam reach, we got some hull flying in. But the wind and seas kept building and building, 25 gusting to 30? Way too much, but no time to reef further. A few miles from Ventura winds dropped, we sailed in to the finish. We finished a few minutes before 4 PM. It was the most exciting and challenging Hardway around Anacapa I can recall. --- Mitch on Shorty wrote: We got pounded hard in windy lane, broke a few things, made it to the west end and saw a couple fast monos who had caught up to us from way behind, spinning around in front of us. We took inventory of our breakages and the conditions and called it quits. We had to motor to get away from the island, about 3 miles out it was breeze on again, very gusty with some humorously breaking chop. Weird, wet and wild. The wind dropped dramatically by the beach. One of the few times when I don't feel horrible self-loathing for pulling the plug. Good job Bill and crew, you were smoking! --- Your Editor, Bill Gibbs
