COMMODORE'S COMMENTARY Jim Adriansen Friends, November is another one of those months that I love. The air is a bit crisper, the nights are longer and we are able to rest up a bit from a long year of yacht racing. Off water spectator sports take center stage for enthusiasts. The college football season is in full swing, the World Series of baseball has just finished and professional football is a Sunday ritual. If you enjoy basketball, we have that too! Dorothy and I have prepared a Thanksgiving turkey the same way for the past 21 years. In November 1994, a young chef named James Boyce caught our attention with his method for turkeys. Boyce launched his culinary career at the venerable Le Cirque in New York before passing through Las Vegas on his way to Huntsville where he is owner of Cotton Row. Boyce is a two time Mobil five star award winner. Anyway, his recipe for fresh heritage turkeys is superb! We love it. Thanksgiving fare is just another reason why I enjoy November! At the October membership meeting Judy Nolde was the recipient of the Golden Anchor award for her contributions to the Sailathon. Fittingly, guest Cary Freeny drew Judy s name as the winner of a trip aboard Island Packers. Maggie Hood took away the Fouled Prop award for injuring her leg after competing in a yacht race. We had an opportunity to formally welcome back our lovable Will Tacke. As you know, Will has been in Germany the better part of the past year. Will teamed with Cary to prepare an authentic German Oktoberfest dinner for those attending the October meeting. Five types of German sausages, sauerkraut, potato salad and dessert were featured. Members and guests raved about the great food while celebrating Oktoberfest. Bar manager Judy Nolde sourced draft beers including Bitberger, Hofbräu and a few fine bottled beers, as well. Thanks to this trio of hosts for a wonderful evening! News from the Board of Directors meeting was welcomed. The membership dues will remain the same for 2016! Bar prices, too! Staff Commodores Jamie Clark, Su Countess and Joe Vetrano have been working hard to bring us a slate of officers for The election will take place this month! Please attend the November annual membership meeting to vote! You must be present in order to participate in the election process. Dorothy and I joined Joe and Cathy Vetrano aboard Caroline for the Sailathon I enjoyed trimming the sails as Joe drove the yacht around the racecourse as many times as we could! Dorothy made tuna salad in puff pastry for lunch. I was thrilled to take the helm for the ride home. Such a nice way to

COMMODORE'S COMMENTARY continued Such a nice way to spend a wonderful afternoon helping Caregivers raise money to support elder care volunteers! And Yes! We kept the Ugly Fish! Joe Vetrano (pirate), Mike Hopper and Lisa Hopper (hippies) accompanied Dorothy and I (sailor and geisha) to Anacapa Yacht Club for the annual Halloween Party! AnYC Commodore Lisa Roberson was the perfect host. She took time to visit with Joe and I during the evening. She came dressed as a cat. Mike and Lisa were seen enjoying finger sandwiches, mozzarella broomsticks, chicken bites, taco salad and ghoulish cookies dipped in a strawberry puree made to look like a bloody finger. Trish Alcorn, who came dressed as Flo from the Progressive Insurance commercial, made these delicious cookies. Randy was Mayhem the guy who gets repeatedly pummeled in the Allstate Insurance commercial. They took home the prize for best couple! Vice Commodore Dominic Cortese (baby) and Georgette (baby s teddy bear, later in the evening a witch) organized the party for AnYC. Dominic was Master of Ceremonies. Georgette helped lavishly decorate the place in Halloween motif. Good times! Well folks, that s it! Be sure to attend the November membership meeting! Come enjoy the club. As always, Dorothy and I wish you well. Until next time friends fair winds Jim Adriansen, Commodore

THE VIRTUES OF VICE (COMMODORE) Happy November! For some reason, October just seemed to be a whirlwind of activity. Much of that activity was at PBYC or with our PBYC and sister club, Anacapa Yacht Club friends. Fine dining was on the menu when PBYC members had the opportunity to sample the Oxnard College Culinary Program s a 5 course gourmet meal at Bistro Chez Henri. As usual the food was fabulous. I sent Jamie a picture of the quinoa salad I had. Sadly I gobbled the main course before I could get my camera out. I hope to make this a bi annual event, so keep your eyes open for next spring s seating!! Ventura Isle Marina hosted their monthly program Legends and Lore of Channel Islands a presentation by Steven R. Van Hook. Even those who grew up around the area and/or have made numerous voyages to the Channel Islands went away learning something new. The speaker took us from the mystery of the origins of the island series from the native peoples and early explorers to modern day fun facts about indigenous species and sea life. Jim, Dorothy, and I were present and I think we all agree this would be a great person to invite back for a general meeting program. The next day Caregivers Sail a thon. The Ugly Fish stayin where he (or she) belongs. Nuff said. Oh, except the Hoppers woot woot entered WAVELENGTH. That was our first time out on a our own boat. Thanks to all eleven boats representing PBYC in such a strong fashion. For a little club, we have big spirit! In total $17,000 was raised for Caregivers. And then there was the Halloween party at AYC. Fun was had by all. I m sure the pictures will surface sooner or later, probably in this issue. Keep your eye out for pictures of both Halloween and Caregivers Many thanks to AYC for an awesome night. Next year back to PBYC for the festivities. And last but not least, PBYCs last race of the season, Two Harbors Race #2. Still one more to go hosted by AYC. Richard Countess will most certainly have something to say about it. I made my split pea soup for the racers and on a very personal note I want to sincerely thank Sharon Elvin who not only tended bar but help me clean up a pea soup disaster. My take away store brand freezer bags? Not so much. So on to November. Thank goodness we are finally starting to get that little nip in the night air. It s starting to actually feel like fall. On the horizon for November/ December November 13 VIM Thanksgiving Potluck November 14 Las Padres Ski Club/PBYC Thanksgiving Potluck November 21 PBYC Annual Meeting 2016 Bridge and Board will be elected December 19 PBYC Ventura Harbor Parade of Lights potluck. Many hands make light work. My thanks to everyone who contributed their time to make this past month s events successful. Lisa Hopper, Vice Commodore

RECOGNIZE RACERS! PBYC RACE COMMITTEE REPORT TWO HARBOR FALL SERIES The first race of this three race series was hosted by Anacapa Yacht Club on October 17th. The wind was about 20 knots at the start and continued to build during the day. The Spinnaker A boats were given a 19.2 nm course that went around Platform Gilda, back to the Mandalay buoy and the finish at the Channel Islands harbor, and the Spinnaker B boats were given a 17.7 nm course that went around Platform Gilda and back to the finish line. Since there were not enough nonspinnaker boats to give them their own class, several non spinnaker boats raced in the Spinnaker B fleet using their non spinnaker offset. Tom Hudson s Santa Cruz 37 E TICKET was the first boat to finish in the A fleet with an elapsed time of 2 hours and 54 minutes, but corrected to second place behind Dave Boatner s J 35 RIVAL by five minutes. Carlos Brea sailed his Schock 30 FAT TUESDAY to a first place finish in the Spinnaker B fleet with an elapsed time of 3 hours and 10 minutes and eight minutes ahead of the second Swanson. The weather conditions for the second race of the series hosted by PBYC on October 31st were to say the least haunted (appropriate for Halloween). We had 7 to 8 knots of wind at the start with a weather forecast of at least 10 knots later in the day that unfortunately failed to materialize. place VELERO, an Islander 29 sailed by Brent The weather conditions for the second race of the series hosted by PBYC on October 31st were to say the least haunted (appropriate for Halloween). We had 7 to 8 knots of wind at the start with a weather forecast of at least 10 knots later in the day that unfortunately failed to materialize. After sending the Spinnaker A boats on a 16.2 nm race around Platform Gilda with the finish in Ventura harbor and the Spinnaker B boats on a 14.5 nm course consisting of six different legs that kept the boats in shore, the wind died to less than 3 knots. Seven of the 12 boats dropped out of the race before a freshening breeze returned in the late afternoon allowing the five remaining boats to romp across the finish line before 5:30 PM. E TICKET was the first boat to finish in the Spinnaker A class with an elapsed time of 5 hours and 15 minutes and was first on corrected time beating the second place boat RIVAL by six minutes. FAT TUESDAY was the first boat to finish in the Spinnaker B class with an elapsed time of 5 hours and 45 minutes, but corrected to second place behind Deke Klatt s J 24 JADED by five minutes. The overall standings for the series has E TICKET and RIVAL tied for first place in the Spinnaker A class with three points, and FAT TUESDAY in a commanding lead in the SPINNAKER B class with two points. All race results are posted on PBYC s web site. I would like to thank the following individuals who assisted me and Susan with the second race: Joe Vetrano, Jeff Heath, Kappy Paulson and Robin White on race committee; Jeff Heath, Dale Pelka and Jeff Olmstead on the finish line; Lisa Hopper for preparing delicious split pea soup for the post race festivities; and Sharon Elvin for bar tending. 13 PBYC winning Caregivers again? Not exactly a fluke.

SU's TIDBITS Notes from our tireless and faithful Club Records Administrator It's El Dia de los Muertos as I write, the Day of the Dead, All Saints Day, day after Halloween, day after PBYC ran a windless Fall Series race. It's also the day to set clocks back an hour; those that do not set themselves, that is. I'm amazed at the number of clocks in the house. It seems that every appliance has a digital clock. Does anyone remember analog clocks? I recently received the remainder of my family's watches, all analog of course. Richard now has my grandfather's gold retirement watch from 1958 and I have his pre retirement watch. Both work and need to be wound and set each day. That got me thinking of what people did to set a watch before atomic clocks, GPSs, radio and telephone time ticks. From where did the radio and telephone folks get their time info? There is likely some treatise explaining sun dials to town criers to modern electronics. Both Richard and I are so accustomed to digital watches that we have had to re teach ourselves how to read the analog devices. The Caregivers Sailathon was a huge success raising around $17,000 for the charity. PBYC had 11 entries to Anacapa Yacht Club's 5. So we get to keep the Ugly Fish trophy for another year. It was a fabulous day for sailing and SYMPHONY completed 7 laps, a record for us. Great big smacking thanks to all our boaters for their support. Cindi and Le entered CYNTHIA I, AFTERBURNER was there again. AFTERBURNER and SYMPHONY seemed always to be at the same tacking point at the same time. Mike and Lisa sailed their cruiser, WAVE LENGTH, Judy was aboard PAPAKEA, Alan Annis sailed SOLITUDE, Jeff Olmstead took POWDERMILK, Verne Haller Я ESCAPE, Jamie and Maura powered HEART OF GOLD, Joe and Cathy sailed CAROLINE, and we were represented by a canoe from the Ventura Outrigger Canoe Club. The canoe capsized, the crew righted it, bailed it out, and continued paddling. I've never seen so many people in our clubhouse as were there for the after party. I could only access the front and back of the room in the wheelchair. On November 21st we will elect our 2016 Officers and Directors. Please be there to vote, and please consider what you can do to help PBYC in The inside cover of the Fore 'n' Aft lists positions that need to be filled. Especially important are Membership, Social, and Programs. Commodore elect Lisa Hopper is busy putting together her staff. Let her know what you would like to do. By now you will have received your 2016 dues letter. The good news is that dues will remain the same as 2015, $650 for the year. Also good news is that we are bringing back the ability for PBYC to accept credit card payments. Consider giving yourself a holiday present that gives you back the camaraderie and good times you have at PBYC. Renew your membership. Pierpont Bay Yacht Club and Los Padres Ski Club are having a joint Pre Thanksgiving Pot Luck Dinner on Saturday, November 14th, to celebrate the holidays and enjoy each other's company. Turkey and Ham will be provided. Please RSVP to Jeff Heath (jch160@sbcglobal.net) so we can get a count and know what you will bring. Jeff will ensure we do not end up with 20 pumpkin pies. This is a chance to do a trial run of your favorite stuffing, potato dish, vegetable creation, appetizer, or dessert.

FROM THE DESK OF THE FORE 'N' AFT EDITOR(S) I keep wondering if we're going to run out of story here, in the continuing serialization of the VOYAGE OF THE WAHOO... but Bill seems determined to keep supplying us with bracing stories of nautical challenges through at least year end. As Charles Dickens demonstrated, you can keep the reading audience coming back and back again, with regular cliffhangers. We last left our privateer hero in a Black Hole of Iridium Nonexistence... herewith the latest installment, heading for a somewhat easier to find on the map feature: a big canal. Cheers, Jamie Back in the July issue I recounted the loss of our rudders on our way to Bonaire, and the arrival of my daughter & son in law for a week of fun. Which it was. I recommend the donkey sanctuary to anyone visiting Bonaire. Yes I know it sounds strange. Bonaire is heaven for scuba divers, wind surfers, and kite surfers. Snorklers too. Not a ritzy place, small population, very friendly, very casual, very Dutch. I returned home for the summer, most of July & August (we had planned a stop to wait out hurricane season anyway. Now in Bonaire in a secure marina). I redesigned the rudder shafts and had them reviewed by a professional rudder engineer. The builder had been building Wahoo for himself and had a weight savings/ performance focus. He is excellent with composites. He is not an engineer. So when he deviated from Schionning s plans (WAHOO is a Schionning G Force 1400), he didn t realize what he was doing to the strength of the shafts. Longer thinner rudders, smaller diameter stainless pipe shafts, and fiberglass rod core (useless) for extra strength. I calculated his shafts were 15% as strong as the Schionning design. Ouch. New shafts are a bit larger in diameter, and solid titanium. This prevented us from having to rebuild the rudder tubes and

VOYAGE OF THE WAHOO (continued) bushing system. I found the titanium in the US and shipped it to South Africa where the builder built us a new set of rudders. He is trying to honor his warranty. He joined us back in Bonaire in September, where we installed new rudders and worked on other lesser repairs and omissions. He also delivered our carbon steering wheels which are way cool. Then we all sailed to Aruba as a test, which we passed. Orangestad is a casino town. A happening place, lots of rich people. I liked Bonaire better. I took a short trip home. New crew came back with me and we set off for the San Blas Islands. This took us 3 days, motor sailing thru squalls on the last day. We saw a lot of squalls and lightning. I don t like them. We learned to use the radar to help avoid them. San Blas islands are a group of primitive islands inhabited by the Kuna Indians, who fish and sell stuff to tourists. Only one island had a store, most have nothing. Picturesque. After 4 days at different islands, we began to head to the Canal. Heading west, stopping at Turtle Cay marina (tiny), and Portobello. Cristobal is the harbor on the Atlantic side of the Canal. There must have been over a hundred ships anchored and waiting outside. We needed Harbor Control permission to let us enter and proceed to Shelter Bay marina to haul out. We needed to replace our saildrive hull gaskets, as well as raise the bottom paint water line, and align the rudders. Took us a week, getting parts shipped in and all. The gasket guy insisted on removing our propeller blades (Vari Profile fairing props), and offering us a free service, grease etc. Nice guy. With paint delays, we launched the morning of our transit.

VOYAGE OF THE WAHOO (continued) Off to the Canal for our 5:00 PM departure! Wait a minute, port engine won t rev up, 1200 max, instead of We check everything we can, and at staging center, dove the props to inspect. We checked fuel and changed filters. Everything looks ok. Pilot shows up, Sir we have a problem with one engine. Can you maneuver and make 6 knots? yes. Let s go! To do the canal you need 4 line handlers; we had 2 crew, 1 experienced local volunteer from the multihull mailing list and a paid pro (excellent young guy). Spanish helps. You also get a pilot. These guys were great. First night we go up the Gatun locks into the lake and find a mooring for the night. Pilot leaves after we feed him. Next morning a new pilot is delivered and we start thru the canal. Our assigned boat for the down locks is running late so we don t need to rush. We were the only private boat Pacific bound that day, only one going the other way, a big catamaran. We didn t see much traffic most of the day, just the beautiful inside of Panama. After waiting a few hours at a mooring in front of the down locks, our lock buddy shows up, a big slow RORO (roll on roll off car carrier). HUGE! We would go in a lock, tie up in the front, then he would come in behind us, and we would pray he would stop in time. He was towed in by mules (name for train like pullers). We got down the 3 locks without incident and into the Pacific. We were headed to Flamenco Marina to refuel and pick up exit papers from our agent. But instead we got a slip and arranged for engine repair. We arrived Saturday night and nothing happens on Sunday. By Tuesday our mechanic and all expert advice have not found a problem. The only thing left is the injector pump. I fly home cause this is going to take a while. They can t find parts so I have to find a pump and ship it to Panama. It doesn t fix the problem (???) Before pulling the engine, my buddy Mark inspects the props again, and the

VOYAGE OF THE WAHOO (continued) pitch doesn t look right. I return, we pull the props and something is wrong. Expert advice again, and we think port prop was reassembled wrong. Of course the prop manufacturer says no field service, ship the prop to the US for factory service (another week and a boat buck at least). We get help from South Africa dealer, open and correct prop ourselves, and all is well in 5 minutes. 2 weeks of engine work and major expense for nothing. All because a nice guy doing me a favor made a one gear tooth alignment error, and everyone misdiagnosed the problem. Sheesh. Chalk it up to education. Finally off to Costa Rica! Nice motoring for 6 hours, when the other engine (starboard) dies. Broken alternator bracket and pivot tab broken off engine cover. We have 3,000 miles to go, and no better place for engine repair soon. Back to Panama City we go arriving Sunday early, timed with dawn. We anchor, call our Panama friends and ask for help again. Monday we move to the Balboa Yacht Club, to a mooring, right next to the canal exit and a mooring. Much cheaper than Flamenco. Mechanic comes up with a bracket to fabricate, that will hopefully eliminate major engine labor with cover replacement. We are waiting for the part to be finished. Then off to Papagayo, Costa Rica, maybe. Unless the part doesn t work or something else is wrong with the engine. I am learning patience and acceptance. Cold beer helps. I will be home around Thanksgiving, and Christmas New Years, as my wife says these are nonnegotiable. Hopefully we can make some progress north. Home this year is still possible. Reporting from Panama Bill WAHOO
