Welcome to March and hopefully Spring! Commentary by the Commodore The February General meeting was great! We had a delicious dinner prepared by Lynne and Tom Nelson, thanks to both of you! And a very interesting program featuring a movie chronicling the history of air was shown! Thanks to Don Price for showing the film and answering a variety of questions from our members and guests. Speaking of guests, we had quite a few at our meeting! Perhaps future members? Lesley and Dale Pelka won the Blue Ball of Happiness prize, $75! The Nelsons were awarded the Golden Anchor for the fine meal and yours truly was awarded the Fouled Prop for being Commodore! (Someone asked me what I had done in the last month and when I started to recount the things I had worked, when someone interrupted and nominated me for tooting my own horn!!!) The second race of the Spring Series was run with a few to several boats and lots of wind! I heard it was wild out on the deep blue sea! The third and final race of the Spring Series is March 19th. We will need people for the Race Committee boat to start the race and the Finish Line! Call me if you would like to participate! Opening Day is sooner than you think. All members will be getting an invitation by or regular mail. There are tasks that need to be done that you can help with before the event and/or just come and be part of the ceremony! Dignitaries from neighboring yacht clubs and associations will be attending so we want our club to be bright and shiny in all respects! There is always plenty of food and drink, so come and have fun. A unique drink named Painkillers, is made by Joe Vetrano and it is really good! But, you have to come to sample!! Last year I really enjoyed the clubs that featured lots of their members in attendance. Finally, PBYC's Opening Day is often one of the best, so come and have a good time! The March Meeting coincides with the general clean up of the club for Opening Day. We need lots of help so come participate and stay for the dinner which will feature

an Irish theme! Please go to the club's website the calendar, color Fore N Afts, racing news and lots of photos, among other things. The club is free to use for members. If you are planning an event check the calendar to see if it is available on the date you need! Then call/ an officer or board member to make the reservation. Our website is ably administered by Sheryl Lunsford, who does a great job! Thanks, Sheryl!!! Please let me know if you have any ideas or concerns regarding the club or activities! Hope to see you soon! Cindi Mathieu PBYC Commodore

From the Vice Commodore Where did this month go? Work has been quite a load on Sheryl and I this month and I think we made it down to the club maybe twice (I know some of us still have to do that). Well gang it's that time of year again to break out those summer uniforms and get ready for all of the opening day extravaganzas! Are you ready? I'm not but I will be soon! RSVP's have already been sent out by some of the clubs in our area so get ready folks, it's time to party! I'm in high hopes that this year will turn out to be a very nice cruising year. By now you all should have seen the cruise calendar. What do you think? If anyone has any other suggestions, your input is more than welcome. I am always open for suggestions. I understand that later this year we will be able to reserve moorings at Two Harbors online. This may make an even better destination for one of our cruises since the uncertainty of getting a mooring will no longer be a deterrent. If not this year, maybe next year for sure! We had a blast a few years back on a club cruise to Catalina. Only two of our boats made it but it didn't make it any less fun for all. Did you know they have bars and serve alcohol on the island? Who would have guessed? Anyway, come on down to the club and join in with the festivities, we miss you! (Rick, how about a cruise to Ensenada? NOSA runs one in April..., ed) Oh, one more thing. There will be no air show at Point Mugu this year so the C-Dragon will not be taking guests offshore to watch the show this year. Hopefully next year we will get a chance. Until then, fair sailing. Rick Lunsford PBYC Vice Commodore

View From The Rear Old man Winter is making up for lost time, at least today he was (Saturday 26 February.) When I woke up this morning, my intention was to show up at the Skipper's Meeting for Spring Series II to let the committee know that I was available to take pictures, then be on the RC boat for the trip out and back, thereby fulfilling my duties as Club Photographer, it didn't happen that way. The RC Boat (CAROLINE) Crew consisted of Joe V., Genie P., John T. and me. Upon arriving at the boat, John informed me that I would be needed to assist with the race flags at the Starting Line. Piece of cake, eh?...though somewhat easier than taking shadows, f-stops and shutter speeds into account, let's add one more model to the picture the conditions: Wind knots, seas AT LEAST 3-4 ft, air temp barely breaking 50 degrees F (10 C.) Not your usual morning on the RC Boat! I was also given anchor detail, thankfully the windlass was operative The last time I went out on an RC Boat in similar conditions was on the MA CHERIE. One of the results was a photo that, despite being badly composed, was perhaps one of my best so far: AFTERBURNER GETS SOME AIR originally titled: 52 FOOT FLYING FISH (a truly great photo, ed). I was hoping for a similar situation here but NOOOOOOOOOO!!! The fleet for this race was rather small (<15 boats) and with the position of the RC boat relative to the starting line, shadows would have been a b-b-b-bear. (Come on now this IS a family publication, besides I am trying to avoid alibis.) In the clubhouse, the empty picture frames where usually go the portraits of the Bridge Officers will be filled soon, at the latest on time for Opening Day but I'm shooting for sooner than that. Today I took the Photos of Cindi and Rick and my own will also be forthcoming. I guess I could say that at least my Nikon had something to do today. Spring Series III scheduled for 19 March. Hoping for a bigger fleet and more pleasant conditions. Hopefully somebody else can do flags so I can at least do my job. James Lavagnino PBYC Rear Commodore

Race Report Joe Vetrano (& John Thawley) 2011 SPRING SERIES PBYC hosted the first and second races race of this series in February. The race committee consisted of John Thawley, Jim Lavagnino, Cathy McEwan, and Genie Pang on Joe Vetrano's Caroline serving as the RC boat. I would like to also thank George Moore and Richard and Su Countess for finishing all the boats, and Cindi Mathieu for preparing lasagna and chowder for hungry racers after both races. Race # 1 2/12/2011 With southerly winds of 4-7 knots at the start and the weather forecasts calling for light winds in the afternoon, we gave the spinnaker and multi-hull boats a 15 mile course around Gina and Fishsticks with the non-spinnaker boats sailing a 10 mile course around the Wes mark and Fishsticks. Of the 20 boats that started the race, one spinnaker boat and one non-spinnaker boats took a DNF. The remainder of the fleet finished between 3:00 and 4:30 in the afternoon. The top three boats in the spinnaker fleet were XS, Angry Hillbillies 3, Rival, while the top three boats in the non-spinnaker fleet were Zuma Jay, Quiet Times, and Tuxedo Junction. The ORCA fleet was won by Honukai. Corrected finish times are: Spinnaker XS (Gene & Gino Beville) 3:36:15 1 Angry Hillbillies (Moore, Klatt) 3:40:44 2 Rival (Team Rival) 3:48:21 3 Paradise Found (Jim Alpert) 4:22:49 4 Fusse (Harry Krum) 4:30:52 5 Majic Dragon (Mike Hopper) 4:33:02 6 Tortoise (Stan Whisenhunt) 4:37:36 7 Double Down (Brian Kerr) 4:51:42 8 Senior Advantage (Eric Beck) DNF Non-Spinnaker Zuma Jay (Kevin Dickman) 3:14:48 1 Quiet Times (Tom Warshauer) 3:19:16 2 Tuxedo Junction (Brad Barnes) 3:20:43 3 Breezy (Chris Johnston) 3:33:49 4 Velero (Brent Swanson) 3:38:24 5 Alcyone (Gary Goodman) 3:45:02 6 R'Escape (Verne Haller) 3:46:20 7 Moore Fun (Joe Joines) DSQ

Of the 9 boats that started the race, only 4 finished. The spinnaker and multi-hull boats sailed a 20 mile course around Gail and Gilda with the non-spinnaker boats sailing a 16 mile course around Gilda. Boats that finished were in by 2:40 PM. The top three boats in the spinnaker fleet were Angry Hillbillies 3, XS, and Second Chance, while in the non-spinnaker fleet Quiet Times was the only boat to finish. There were no finishers in the ORCA fleet. 10 Su s Tidbits After many months of studying and exams our Treasurer, Lesley Pelka, is now officially a CPA. Congratulations, Lesley! I apologize to Tom Nelson for leaving him off the February birthday list. His was February 15th. He did get his free drink card. The 2011 Roster is out. Only a few members requested paper copies. We received reciprocals from Morro Bay Yacht Club, Ventura Yacht Club, and Marina Yacht Club of Long Beach after it was published. I'm tracking how many clubs call us Pierpoint vs. Pierpont. So far the 'ponts outweigh the 'points by a small margin. One of the cool things about being Commodore of PBYC is that you get to give three special awards at Change of Command: The Yachtsman of the Year, The First Mate of the Year, and The Helping Hands. Gerald chose Andy Killion as Yachtsman of the Year for 2010 for all the work he has done for Caregivers over a number of years. His Commodorable, Carol, received his nod as First Mate of the year, and Cindi Mathieu was the hands-down choice for Helping Hands award. Cindi is a person who is always there with support, help, and plain old work. Well done, Gerald. Well done, Andy, Carol, and Cindi. (here, here!, ed) Our racers began the year doing well in VYC's January races. Keep it up Я ESCAPE, DOUBLE DOWN, and MAJIC DRAGON. We were well represented in PBYC's Spring Series, too. SENIOR ADVANTAGE and DREI joined the others. As I mentioned in the January Fore 'n' Aft, Dr. Laura has a new boat. KATANA is a custom 46-footer she intends for long distance racing. KATANA is a Japanese word for the sword of the Samurai. According to Laura, in Japanese culture, the samurai's sword represents honor, courage, and commitment. She will be racing Newport Harbor Yacht Club's Cabo Race under PBYC's burgee. Since the boat is scheduled to splash on March 1st and the Race starts March 18th there might not be time for a christening party, but I understand we're invited when it happens. You can track the race at WARRIOR, Dr. Laura's previous boat, trophied in last year's Cabo race. Katana will also race for PBYC in the Transpac in July. Transpac has some really serious requirements as befits a race of that length. Of course all the boats have to be inspected. All are also required to complete qualifying long distance races. KATANA is using the Cabo race as her qualifier. Then there is the requirement for the skipper and one third of the crew to attend a safety at sea seminar. More on Transpac in coming issues. We wish KATANA fresh winds, favorable tides, and spectacular moonlit nights on the Cabo race. You go, girl! AFTERBURNER is back in the water, mast and all. Bill has already signed up to race both the Border Run and Ensenada races. PBYC will lose those big perpetual trophies Bill won in last year's Ensenada race, but we hope he will bring some back again this year. The Border Run began as an event for boats that NOSA didn't want in the Ensenada Race, and the organizers originally scheduled it on the same weekend. Reasonable minds prevailed as the race became more popular and picked up the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society as a cause. The dates no longer conflict. A little bird told me that Bill had something to do with it. (and it wasn t easy..., ed).

Dr. Laura... Excerpts from a web interview Newport Harbor conducted with Dr. Laura concerning last year's Cabo race. I did the Cabo race purely for the adventure. I had never been out on the open ocean and simply wanted the experience. By the end of the first day and one-half, I was cold, damp, exhausted and generally miserable. I clicked my heels but couldn't get back to Santa Barbara. Then, on the second and one-half day I got with the rhythm of it and can't tell you enough how much I absolutely loved it: huge turtles, whales, dolphin, the horizon with no land and no other boats - it was just amazing! We followed the progress of all the boats on the computer and we were well behind our competition for most of the race. Ultimately - I didn't care that much because we all were having such a fun time with each other and with the elements. I would guess that if the amount of laughter aboard a boat won a trophy - we'd get it. On the last day I woke up from my four hour down time to find zero wind. I did see a shark fin and wouldn't let anyone swim! We'd gone way out to sea and were totally becalmed. I decided I was the "wind witch" and would bring wind any moment now. They all scoffed at me - until I pointed to some tiny cat paws on the surface of the water growing larger in diameter. Suddenly, we started to take off. The best part of the entire experience was that night when we were coming into Cabo. I was driving (that's my job) through the moonshine on the water. It was so beautiful I was crying. Believe it or not, I turned to my crew and suggested we forget the finish line and just keep sailing. I meant it - as strange as that may sound. I got voted down, so over the finish line we came. From the day I suggested we do that Cabo race, I never considered the possibility of winning. I just wanted the adventure.

Andy s Boatyard I was thinking that it has been awhile since I actually wrote something related to boat yards or boat projects. I suppose some readers suspect this isn't even a working boat yard that I am writing from or about but rest assured that it is. It is a living and breathing boat yard, actually two of them. We prefer the term Marine Center as it sounds more gentrified and professional. So if you own a boat or are interested in all things boats you are probably a little miffed that I haven't discussed them very much. As in an earlier essay titled "Naupactus 2500 B.C.", I must admit that our industry has changed little over the last 5000 or so years. True, paints and building materials have changed but the general premise is all the same. Keep the "water out". So what we do every day is really that simple. We endeavor to keep the "water out". Unfortunately sometimes we are tasked too late and the water has already won the battle. So we change our tune to "get the water out", then move on to plan A of keeping the water out. If we get this wrong well let s just say, the water is kept in. All boats are the same. Yes, they are. Like an E.R. doctor on a Friday night, we have seen it all baby. We have seen great boats and many more of the not so great ones, but rest assured, if it is a boat, we can fix it by god. The main problem usually has to do with the owner's balance of utility value vs repair costs. Unfortunately many boats are like mini space shuttles with systems that have been bastardized by legacy owners from years past. So when it comes time to visit us, just remember that we can fix any boat any time. All it takes is time and money. If you let maintenance go for too long, try to fix things without good parts and materials or utilize poorly trained help, well let s just say, we will be seeing you or your boat sometime at a later date. At the end of the day, all boats have a negative value unless you are using them. So if you find yourself questioning that hole in the water down in the harbor, maybe get down there and take her out so you can remember what it was like the first day you got out on the water. Freedom baby. That's what we all want. If you can't find the time, call a broker and blow her out.

Notes from the Editor Late again. Sorry. Life is about choices. Stay married and accompany my wife on a 3 day wine weekend to Paso Robles... Or get divorced, and stay home to work on the F&A newsletter. I thought about this one for about half a second. I mean I love you guys and all, but this was about wine... Oh, and marriage too. I think I made the right choice, and now the newsletter is late. Sorry. I still have too much wine and will be sharing March 27, come on by. I got my boat and my mast back from Andy, and no longer have to say nice things about him, But I will anyway. He always goes the extra mile for his customers, great service. (ask for the PBYC discount. I don t think there is one, but it doesn t hurt to ask, ed) I think I ve mentioned Yolo before, my crazy pusher boat project for Afterburner, which didn t do so well on sea trials #1 or #2. Looks like we ll be coming home from Ensenada on 20 hp. There s always next year. We are planning to do the Border Run for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) April 9, then the Newport Ensenada race for the Excessive Eating and Drinking in Your Editor, Bill Gibbs Ensenada Society April 15. Only one is a charity, but both are fun. We will accept donations for either. Just joking, to donate to LLS you have to go to the Border Run website. Don t forget to mention Afterburner.
