MARCH 2017
COMMODORE'S COMMENTARY Jeff Olmstead The PBYC Super Bowl party on Feb. 5 was a great success. About 15 members and guests were at the club for part or all of the game. Even though it was the longest game in Super Bowl history, and one of the best, most of them stayed to the end. Judy s clammy chowder, fried chicken and shrimp, and three kinds of pie were disappearing as quickly as Atlanta s 21 point lead. Thanks to everyone who showed up to make it a fun party. I bet Atlanta wishes their defense had made as good a showing. February s dinner meeting on the 18th featured a spaghetti dinner prepared by my older brother Gary, who I drafted to cook while I led the board meeting. Isn t it great to have family members willing to contribute to their sibling s success? Thanks again, Gary. I chose to serve spaghetti to compliment my slide show presentation of my 2007 trip to Cinque Terra and Tuscany in Italy. It wasn t a cooking themed trip, just a vacation with my other, younger, brother Clay and his wife and some of their friends. I enjoyed a one day walking tour of Cinque Terra, a tourist resort area
on the coast of Tuscany, before the group met in the small town of Panzano, south of Florence, for a week at a rented villa. Our daily sight seeing excursions to Florence, Siena, Pisa, Greve, and Radda in Chianti were fueled not only by meals more varied than our spaghetti, but also by daily doses of gelato. After tempting the assembled members with several photos of the delectable dessert during the show, their patience was rewarded with a fourflavor selection of gelato imported directly from Winco! It may have disappeared faster than Judy s clammy chowder. Although we had a relatively small turnout, again, everyone seemed to enjoy the evening. Our next general meeting will be on Sunday, March 19, at Noon, held in conjunction with our St. Patrick s Day party and Original Limerick contest. Richard and Su Countess, along with the Adriansen's, will make their famous and traditional luncheon of corned beef and cabbage. Dress up as your favorite leprechaun, or come in character as your limerick and you may get extra points in the contest. Opening Day is the next big event on the club calendar. That is April 1st, and is preceded by Club Scrub, the preparation for Opening Day, the weekend of March 25 and 26. I hope all members will be able to participate in some fashion in both events. We will have a list of tasks that need attention for Club Scrub. All you have to do is show up, choose a task that you can do in the time you can spare, and set to with a will. Every little bit helps. Opening Day is every club s big event of the year. We will need help with set up on Friday evening and Saturday morning. The program begins at 11:30. Put on your blue blazer and help show the attending clubs what a fine club and location we have. See you there. Jeff Olmstead 2017 PBYC Commodore
At the point in the game when all except Judy were happy with the score. Judy deserved the big win. Especially since she hosted the party and did most of the cooking. VIRTUES OF VICE COMMODORE Dorothy Adriansen Jim and I have had quite the busy month! In December on our drive home from a Christmas trip to see our daughter and grandson in Reno, we decided to sell our home in mid town Ventura and buy a boat! Jim is two years from retirement and our plan is to live aboard the boat and then start s l o w l y cruising. In the meantime, we can enjoy the Channel Islands, Catalina and day sailing off the Ventura Pier. Our home on Eva St. sold before hitting the market! We downsized everything after gathering stuff for 35 years! We fell in love with a Beneteau 473 that was lightly used but in need of TLC in Marina del Rey. Jr. Staff Cmdr. Lisa Hopper and Patsy Recla helped me decide on this particular boat! Through our broker Rick Christiansen, Sea Coast Yachts, we were able to negotiate the purchase. Rick was fantastic and we would recommend him to anyone in the market for a boat! The deal closed on Wednesday, March 1 and on Thursday Jim and I along with Commodore Jeff Olmstead, Rear Commodore Ken Recla and Patsy and Mike Hopper travelled to Marina del Rey to deliver the boat back to its new homeport! We took a shuttle from Ventura to Marina Del Rey on the afternoon of Thursday, March 2. The guys went over Jim s checklist for a motor/sail the next morning, and then we had a wonderful dinner at Killer Shrimp Restaurant in Marina del Rey. We knew ahead of time that our dinner would be great because Lisa Hopper, Patsy and I ate there on our way to the Women s Sailing Convention early on in February. Lisa, Patsy and I actually found the boat that weekend that we ended up purchasing. We slumber partied on our new boat, got up the next morning and motor sailed back. Along the way we saw a school of 100 plus dolphins, a few Gray whales and some lounging seals. Jim moved the boat out of a tight slip like he d done it a million times and we delivered it to the Ventura Harbor Marina & Yacht Yard for bottom painting, new prop and a few other minor issues. A perfect experience with a more than a perfect crew! We arrived on Friday at 3pm and had a champagne toast to mark the end of our journey! The Women s Sailing Convention was a great experience. We not only learned a lot but forged friendships with women from all parts of the world. I m for sure going to this convention next year and highly recommend it. So now, we re back and I am looking forward to our Opening Day ceremonies on April 1st.

REAR COMMODORE Ken Recla Were still planning on a Sail to Santa Barbara the weekend of the 10th and 11th of March. Sailing up Friday afternoon and having an evening on State Street. Then Saturday take in the city with an evening meal at Santa Barbara Yacht Club and a leisurely sail back Sunday Morning after loosing an hour of sleep to Daylight Sailing Time.
I never understood, if it s Daylight, Savings time, why do I loose sleep time? So I will choose to call it Daylight Sailing Time. In a related topic, I ve had some discussions with Club Members that say they d like to see a few more short boating events like Day Sails and a Cookout, or just overnight to the islands, or a day of fishing. I like the fishing idea myself never been deep water fishing. We ll work at trying to add some events for everyone. Spring Series is now well underway and I m sure Richard will say a few words about it and the results. I didn t make the first race of the series but went out on the 2nd. Didn t do very well, mostly because Richard forgot to remind me that the objective is to finish ahead of the other boats in your class. But, I must say I had a great crew and fun time on the water. Safety: Hypothermia: I found the following great article in Boating Magazine, Dress For the Water, Not the Weather. One of the biggest mistakes people make is dressing for the air temperature. Water can sap your body heat 25 times faster than air can. Cotton Kills: Cotton is one of the worst things you can wear when it s cold and damp. Cotton absorbs water and reduces body temperature much more quickly than other materials. Wear water resistant fabrics and layers that wick away moisture, and a waterproof outer layer. The Clock is Ticking: When immersed in water 50 degrees or cooler, it takes around 15 to 20 minutes for your core temperature to start dropping. Your body tries to protect itself by flowing blood to the core, causing numbness in your hands and feet. Your blood thickens as it cools, putting stress on your heart. You are now experiencing hypothermia. When your core temperature drops below 90 degrees you will lose consciousness. Wishing everyone Fair Winds and Following Seas and hope to see you at all the upcoming club events. Ken RACE COMMITTEE Richard Countess SPRING SERIES We had ten boats entered in the first two races of this three race series held on February 11th and 25th. With 10 knots of wind from the west at the start of the first race and a forecast of 20 to 25 knots later in the day, I gave the Spinnaker A fleet and the ORCA fleet a 18.2 nm course around Platform Gilda and back to the Mandalay mark and a 16.2 nm course for the Spinnaker B fleet around Platform Gilda. All boats finished within a relatively short window with elapsed times ranging from 2 hours and 54 minutes to 3 hours and 32 minutes. The racers told me after the race that they saw wind gusts approaching 30 knots. Consequently, several boats dropped out of the race due to
either equipment problems or being over powered. The first boat to finish was Bill Gibbs 47 foot catamaran WAHOO followed two minutes later by Brian Stanton s F 28R trimaran NO REGRETS that corrected out in first place in the ORCA fleet. Dave Boatner s J 35 RIVAL followed two minutes behind NO REGRETS to take first place in the Spinnaker A fleet. Dave Trude s Zap 26 GUMBURCULES finished first and corrected out to first in the B fleet. We had to delay the start of the second race by 25 minutes to allow the southerly wind to build from about 1 knot to about six knots. I gave both the Spinnaker A fleet and the ORCA fleet a 16.1 nm course around Platform Gina and Fishsticks and a 13.1 nm course for the Spinnaker B fleet that went around platform Gina. The first boat to finish was WAHOO followed six minutes later by Randy Alcorn s Cal 2 29 OUT PATIENT in the Spinnaker B fleet that finished 24 seconds ahead of Mike Hopper s J 22 MAJIC DRAGON. Both B fleet boats corrected out behind Brent Swanson s Islander 29 VELERO. Harry Krum s Beneteau 38.5 FUSEE corrected out in first place in the Spinnaker A fleet and Mitch Yount s trimaran SHORTY corrected out in first place in the ORCA fleet. For the series, Carlos Brea and Dan Higson s Schock 3GPS FAT TUESDAY is currently in first place in the Spinnaker A fleet with 3 points, followed by RIVAL with 5 points, and Larry Listing s J 35 PREDATOR with 6 points. In the Spinnaker B fleet, Mike Hopper s MAJIC DRAGON is in first place with 4 points, followed by GUMBURCULES and VELERO both with 6 points, and OUT PATIENT with 8 points. NO REGRETS and WAHOO are tied for first place in the ORCA fleet both with 3 points followed by Jerzy Poprawski s Leopard 43 catamaran KASTOR POLLUX with 8 points. Full race results are posted on PBYC s web site. The third and final race of the series is scheduled for March 18th. I would like to thank the following PBYC members for their support with the race: Jeff Heath, Patsy Recla, Verne Haller and Judy Nolde on the race committee boat SYMPHONY with Susan and me; Jeff Olmstead, Verne Haller and Sharon Elvin for assisting me on the finish line; Patsy and Dorothy Adriansen for preparing clam chowder and chicken soup for the post race festivities after the first race; Lisa Hopper for preparing chili for the post race festivities after the second race; and Rob Skaar and Judy Nolde for bar tending. The actual cards from the clubs are in a binder spline labeled "Reciprocals Burgees" and is in the bookcase at the front of the clubhouse. Also in that binder are labeled photos of most of the burgees that line the valences in the room. Taking a lesson from Ken Recla, I'm going to talk about first aid kits. We all have, or should have, a first aid kit on our boats. The photo below shows how our kits have evolved over the years. The tiny red kit lives in our car and travels with us. It has an amazing amount of stuff including moleskin and several useful meds. The J&J kit next to it served us well on our first boat, the GREAT PUMPKIN, an orange San Juan 21. It had enough stuff for a long weekend and didn't take up precious space. When we bought SYMPHONY our Seafarer 30 we assembled our own
kit which we housed in those two blue boxes. In addition to band aids, tweezers, triple antibiotic ointment, single dose aspirin and ibuprofen we added such items as a scalpel for those really deep splinters, an instant cold pack, an ace wrap, a triangle bandage, butterfly closures, a thermometer, and other items intended to get us through extended cruises. Those boxes made the transition to the SYMPHONY the J 32. We recently acquired the upper left kit. Why? Because when I was digging around for a band aid, I discovered that it was inconvenient to search through two boxes, the meds had all expired, and some of the band aid packaging had come apart. When was the last time you checked the expiration dates of the items in your kit? It can be embarrassing. Having worked in the pharmaceutical industry I know that expiration dating is very conservative, and out dated meds are unlikely to harm you, but why take a chance. Speaking of taking a chance, I have a friend who's young child was spiking a fever. She told me that she had both generic and Bayer aspirin and consciously chose the Bayer so as not to take a chance. This was way before the medical community directed that young children not be given aspirin. Today's kits are chock full of stuff and the soft packs make it easy to transport to where it is needed. They are also space savers. The new kit had so many band aids that I removed a ton of them in order to fit the custom items from the blue boxes. I couldn't quite fit in the ace wrap. Band aids are the most frequently used supply. It seems that the boat is always biting its inept crew. Last Saturday the traveler opened a gash in my calf two band aids. Gotta file down the edge of that damned block Now that I made you check your first aid kit, when was the last time you checked your flares? Su CLUB HOST SCHEDULE
