2 COMMANDER S REPORT Wow! What a short turn around this month has been, or at least it seems like it. We have a lot of things to get ready for and a short time to get there. The District is helping to makes things happen. Registration should be coming out very soon and then we head up and out to a new adventure. Speaking of new adventures, I am taking a trip down the Arkansas River to the White River and then to the mighty Mississippi River, final destination.well, that is yet to be determined. Wish me well and pray for a good, happy and truly uneventful trip. Please, everyone give special attention to those that are left to the details of Fall Conference and jump in and help wherever you can. As September rolls on around the door and Summer yields to Fall, remember to get things ready to enjoy the days ahead. All I need is a strong wind across my bow and a star to steer by, for the rest of my journey belongs to God. Cdr J Michael Ellis, JN Safety Officer s Report To continue from last month concerning the right of way we addressed meeting head on, this month lets discuss Crossing Situations and Overtaking situations. Crossing with Power vs. Power...The vessel on the operator's port (left) is the give-way vessel. The vessel on the operator's starboard (right) side is the stand-on vessel. Power vs. Sail...The powerboat is the give-way vessel. The sailboat is the stand-on vessel. Overtaking with Power vs. Power...The vessel that is overtaking another vessel is the give-way vessel. The vessel being overtaken is the stand-on vessel. Power vs. Sail...The vessel that is overtaking another vessel is the give-way vessel. The vessel being overtaken is the stand-on vessel. Respectfully submitted Lt Jeff Penner, S Page 2

3 My View From the Boat Ramp The boat ramp is the beginning and the end of an adventure whether it be fishing, wakeboarding, tubing, or just a pleasant cruise. Most times it is a pleasant adventure, sometimes not. To me it is more than this. It is a source of amusement. Well, I m back from my annual trip to the East. Mostly enjoyable moments. I discovered that high powered boat drivers are just as rude and inconsiderate there as they are in OK. While coming out of the Aquia Creek inlet and turning right into the Potomac River an overtaking high-powered boater cut inside of our turn between us and the channel marker. His wake rocked our boat quite seriously. Had we been in a smaller boat, we would have been swimming. I noticed as I crossed the Mississippi River that the water level is back up to about normal. Maybe that s why our commander is planning to play Huckleberry Finn and go rafting down the Mississippi. From the looks of the current he should reach the Gulf before Thanksgiving. He s putting in at Muscogee. I hope he doesn t get a ticket for DWS (Driving While Sober) on the Arkansas River. He will stand out while driving down the river with a Diet Coke in his hand. While in Virginia I stayed at my sister s. She has a campground and boat dock at the end of about a four-mile stretch of winding road. This road has no shoulder and the edge of the asphalt has from a one-inch to a one-foot drop off on each side. The speed limit on this road is 30 MPH but I find it difficult to do more than 25. On Friday afternoon when the City dwellers hitch up the boat trailer and migrate to the water, they come down this road doing about 40 MPH or better. I followed a trailer that was missing the mailboxes by inches because his boat and trailer were quite a bit wider that his tow vehicle. I watched as one guy towing a pontoon boat ran off the edge of the road. His trailer bounced about a foot in the air as the trailer tire fell off the edge of the road. The boat came about six inches off the trailer and back down. It couldn t have been tied down. There is a tree very close to the road on one of the sharp turns that has the bark severely scared by these careless drivers. This is the money tree. Every time some careless driver hits it the boat repair shop at the marina makes money on the repair. PEACE LOVE LIFE JACKET P/C Bob Hlubin, JN From the Education Office There is a change in the ABC course. We now have four people enrolled in the ABC course and it will start on 11 September. The course will be held at Crown Heights Christian Church, 4020 N. Western, and will run for five consecutive Tuesdays. If you or anyone you know is interested in this course contact me at (405) , (if no answer please leave a message), or at bob.hlubin@cox.net. We haven t started the N course yet. I ll keep you posted. Cost $150. POC for this course is Dave McGee I m hoping to start a Piloting course this fall if we have any interest. I don t have a materials cost yet and will keep you advised. If you have a course you are interested in, please let me know. If we can t schedule a formal course, maybe you would like to study on your own. You can buy or borrow a course book, study on your own, and take the test. One of our instructors can go one-on-one with you to review the material before the test. If you or someone you know is interested in a USPS course, please contact me as shown above. It s a tough job, but somebody must do it. That s why I know that I am somebody! P/C Bob Hlubin, JN Education Officer Page 3

4 HOT DOG COOKOUT Saturday, 22 September 2018, 5:30 PM A Hot Dog Cookout will be held at Danny s and Marilyn s son Jon s ranch at SW 104 th, Mustang, OK (directions below). There are black angus cows, lots of miniature donkeys, fainting goats, maybe chickens and, if they want you to see them, wild turkeys, deer, coyotes, and let s not forget the possibility of ticks. Marilyn give rides on The General (an ATV with seatbelts) to anyone wanting to join her. She assures us she is a very good driver and is looking forward to having cooler riding weather than in the past. Those of you who came to the Ice Cream Social know what a wonderful indoor/outdoor venue this is for just kicking back and enjoying fine company. We will have use of the air-conditioned office with a seating area, kitchen with a refrigerator, and 2 bathrooms. There is a freezer in the shop. There should be plenty of room to store cold items until time to serve. Soda and water will be provided. There is a very large deck shaded by big trees. Bring side dishes or desserts, and call Marilyn to let her know what you are bringing so we don t have too much of the same thing. Be sure to bring your chairs. To RSVP, call Marilyn on If lost, call Directions to Jon s Ranch From Oklahoma City, go west on SH 152 into Mustang, or south on Mustang Road (SH 4) to SH 152 in Mustang and turn right (westbound) onto SH 152, or you can enter Mustang by coming south off I40 at Garth Brooks Blvd on the old highway 92/Clear Springs. Just follow it south to SW 104th and turn right (westbound). On 152, drive westbound to Clear Springs (7-11 on NW corner) and turn left (south). SW 104th is about two miles south. Turn right (westbound) on SW 104th. Clear Springs is two miles west of downtown (CVS, Arby's, Walgreens). Clear Springs used to be SH 92. After turning westbound on SW 104th, you go about a mile and a quarter. You'll see a 35 MPH sign as you descend into a creek area across a narrow bridge. As you come up out of the creek area, Jon's ranch is the second driveway on your left. There is a double wide modular home there with a metal building in the back. We will also try to have a Squadron sign at the cattle guard. Turn left, cross the cattle guard and drive south the half mile to the ranch office. The road dead ends there, so you can't miss it. His pond is on your right as you drive south, Be wary of the livestock. Many won't move, hoping to be fed! On the Hunt The pipe in the foreground is the marker described for the geodetic mark PID AB9280; Designation GS 15. The mark was established in 1972 atop military Fort Fredrick which was built in 1779 located on the southwest coast of Grenada. The mark had not been recovered until Glenda and I documented it on July 23, In the distance, the ship we sailed aboard for a week in the Grenadines is at anchor, The Mandalay. Here is another geodetic m a r k G l e n d a a n d I r e c o v e r e d. T h i s m a r k, P I D T Z , i s identified as the "Ball Apex" of the lighthouse located on the inter bastion of Fort Jefferson built in 1846 on the Garden Key, in the Dry Tortugas. Page 4

6 End-of-Season Advice OK, you and your vessel have survived the summer boating season. Now is the time to plan ahead just a little. If you have been sparing the cost of adding Stabil or one of the other fuel stabilizers to your fuel because you were using your boat regularly and often, time to change. By the end of September in these parts, rains and cold can impair your boating. Fuel is best stabilized when purchased. It might be well to begin adding fuel stabilizer to al fuel bought after Labor Day to ensure your boat fuel system stays ready to operate. Also good for your yard engines. Then, there are the fall fishing times to consider. A cold-water life jacket might be a better choice than a warm-water summer PDF. The weather will become more volatile. Be sure to check your weather forecasts and expect rapid changes. Now the best part of the fall is the boating equipment SALES! WalMart deeply discounts boating products to clear the shelves. Of course, you need to decide what your boats need replaced. Are all of the PFDs in good condition? Do you need any supplies such as engine oil or boat lines? Hs your fishing line been breaking? Do you need more wheel bearing grease? Plastic polish for windshields? Maybe you can upgrade? Is that new depth finder half price now? Are the fishing lights discounted? Are your seat cushions too worn to be used as throw flotation? It will be getting dark sooner. Are your navigation lights still showing the correct colors, or has the sun bleached the lenses out? You ll be using your lights more. Ensure you are legal and visible. Now, time to enjoy boating in warm, but cooler and more comfortable temperatures. Safe Boating! Captain Motorhead My Summer Vacation Visited the Thousand Islands area of the St Lawrence Seaway in New York State. (1,864 islands actually.) In this picture, the island on the left is in Canada, and across the shortest international footbridge in the world is an island in the United States. So many beautiful homes. Mostly for summer use as the seaway freezes over in the winter! Any land that is above water all year around, has at least one tree and one other form of plant life is recognized as an island. Some of them just barely make the count! Also visited Niagara Falls. Lotta water! Best part, got to visit with family. Lt Peggy Anglin, P Page 6
