2 COMMANDER S REPORT Dear Squadron, WOW! What a fast paced trip we had to the Fall Conference. I am just glad that my little pony took us there in one tank full of gas! Dallas and back all in one day, wheee!!!! It was a fun filled event for all eight of us who were there. Danny and Marilyn Goss enjoyed some beautiful sunsets on the White Rock Lake. Conversations were had by all and we were able to really be a part of D-21. Now on to some critical stuff at hand. Our next engagement is at the lake s edge with the water lapping and asking us to come on in and have some fun. I will be setting up early and hope to have a little boat in tow to fish and explore Lake Thunderbird. I know that I have sailed it, and have my power boat on it as well, with friends and family. This is a fun body of water that is close to home and offers a lot of opportunities to those who wish to explore. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the lake! Next on my mind is the TREASURE HUNT and who would be willing to put boats out on the water in Lake Stanley Draper. This lake is a CITY lake and requires a close to home permit to put your boat before launching it into the water. Permits are a few dollars for the day or just a few more the year. I would like to be able to put a couple of clues to the treasure on the water for us to find. The treasure will be in a chest, just like the old pirates of yesteryear used to do. It is this chest that you will have to find. Some clues will be coming in the next Dinghy Painter as to where it might be! If you have not yet seen the OKCS&PS car tags for the front of your car, ask one of us about them and get yours today! They are moving fast! Especially when on the interstate. We now have signs at Lake Hefner and Draper. Next will be at Thunderbird and I am hoping to be able to get into a couple of marinas there. I am currently talking to BassPro Shops and trying to place the same signs out there so as to educate those that are buying the kayaks, canoes, paddle boards and sail boards. I would like to be able to help educate them so that they, too may have a great time on the water and return home safely. There are way too many people having accidents on these specialized vessels and that could be avoided if only they could come to a classroom and learn! Treasure Finding shall be fun! All I need is a strong wind across my bow and a star to steer by, for the rest of my journey belongs to God. Cdr J Michael Ellis, JN Editor s Dilemma I just read an article saying that we don t need to put two spaces after a period. OMG, 50 years of doing so may be hard to change (see prior sentence, space, space). The article did not say using two spaces is incorrect, so I have decided to let my contributors decide for themselves. And, since I think it s prettier, my articles will continue with the out-dated double space. Just thought you d want to know. Lt Peggy Anglin, P Dinghy Painter Editor Page 2

3 My View From the Boat Ramp The boat ramp is the beginning and the end of an adventure whether it be fishing, wakeboarding, tubing, or just a pleasant cruise. Most times it is a pleasant adventure, sometimes not. To me it is more than this. It is a source of amusement. I finally got my boat wet. (In the lake, not in the rain.) As usual I did my pre-towing check. (I hate to get to the lake to find something wrong. Much easier to fix things in the driveway.) After I checked the gas and oil I decided to squeeze the primer bulb a couple of times. I got gas all over myself from a crack in the fuel line. After making temporary repairs I proceeded to Lake Hefner. After getting to the lake I started the engine. The noise it made reminded me of an old farm tractor I used to drive. The engine started running one cylinder at a time shaking the whole boat. After a few minutes it ran smooth enough to move off the trailer. The wind was calm, the water was smooth, the ducks were the only thing making a wake, and the fish were asleep (I didn t catch a thing.) After I decided that I didn t want to clean fish anyway, I made a high-speed run around the lake to exercise my engine and proceeded to the ramp area which was blocked by two inconsiderate boaters blocking the ramp while they prepared to launch (don t need no boating course.) I tied my boat to the dock and patiently waited. One of them finally was ready to launch. After launch, instead of tying the boat to the dock while he parked the truck, he left his son to hold the boat at the end of the dock. Now the boy was holding the line in his hand with one foot on the dock and one foot on the boat while the boat is drited dangerously close to my outboard. I quickly untied and moved my boat out of the way as the father called to the boy, Don t let it hit that other boat.! Fortunately, the boy recovered before he fell in. In situations like this I sometimes wonder if I should save the boy, grab my camera, offer advice, or just mind my own business. PEACE LOVE LIFE JACKET P/C Bob Hlubin, JN From the Education Office I have accepted the position as the Assistant District Education Officer. I m not sure what this entails yet but I m sure I ll find out. We also have a new DEO, Janet Boerner. The Seamanship course has been completed and testing took place at the last class on Wednesday May 2. We haven t started the N course yet. I ll try to keep you posted. Cost $150. POC for this course is Dave McGee I m hoping to start a Piloting course this fall if we have any interest. I don t have a materials cost yet but will keep you advised. If you have a course you are interested in, please let me know. If we can t schedule a formal course maybe you would like to study on your own. You can buy or borrow a course book, study on your own, and take the test. One of our instructors can go one-on-one with you to review the material before the test. If you or someone you know is interested in a USPS course, please contact me at or bob.hlubin@cox.net. (It s a tough job but somebody must do it.) That s how I know that I am somebody. P/C Bob Hlubin, JN Education Officer Page 3

4 Safety Officer s Report Vessel Safety Check Program With a chilly April behind us and warm boat weather here it is the perfect time to have your boat earn a Vessel Safety Check (VSC) inspection sticker. The Vessel Safety Check program helps to achieve voluntary compliance with federal and state recreational boating safety laws. It also raises boater awareness of safety issues through one-on-one contact by vessel examiners. Upon successful inspection a annual VSC sticker is placed on your boat. This sticker allows your fellow boaters, as well as, lake enforcement officers to be aware you have taken the time to make sure your boat is safe, is equipped, and you have knowledge of safety practices. Please contact either Supervising Vessel Safety Check Officer Laurie Hestand at lhestand@gmail.com (Laurie is in the Lake Texoma area) or Jeff Penner at Okchotels@aol.com (Jeff is in the OKC metro area or Lake Eufaula area.) Laurie or I will be happy to meet with you, review your boat, personal water craft, kayak, canoe, or paddle craft. A fun and safe summer is a win/win for everyone and our goal. Respectfully submitted Lt Jeff Penner, S Texoma Boaters VSP Officer Laurie Hestand P, along with Dana Tischer P, will be at Cedar Mills Marina on 26 May to perform vessel safety checks. If you would like your vessel inspected, please let Laurie know, Page 4

5 Past Commanders Clam Chowder, Beef Stew and More Report Our annual Feast took place on Thursday, 12 April 2018 at the Church of the Resurrection with many enthusiastic participants. Much labor was invested in preparations: chefs arrived early to make sure our chili/ stew were hot and ready at the appointed hour; drinks and decorations happened; a cooler full of rum swizzles arrived right on time; guests came bearing desserts and white elephants. Then the fun began! After initial socializing we enjoyed a great meal. Thanks to all the worker bees and to the Church of the Resurrection for allowing us the use of their wonderful facilities. Once everyone had eaten their full (and then some), a lively game of Pictionary ensued. I think the girls won over the guys, but the rules seemed to bend according to how many swizzles had been consumed. Roberta once again proved she was invincible by drawing an identifiable canyon despite the fact that the word on her card was cannon. You go, girl! And there was more! Generous donations of articles, seafaring and not, were auctioned by Bob and his favorite (and only) Vanna. Everything found a home, including mason jars of leftover chowder and stew. More socializing and a quick cleanup completed our event. Thanks to all the volunteers, eaters and drinkers, donors and purchasers who made this party a success. I look forward to seeing everyone again at our upcoming rendezvous. Lt/C Peggy Anglin, P DISTRICT 21 CHANGE OF WATCH AND CONFERENCE REPORT APRIL 2018 DALLAS, TEXAS Danny and Marilyn Goss, Bob Hlubin, Steve and Glenda Bryant traveled to Texas on Friday, meeting up with each other to join the rest of D21 at the White Rock Lake Boat House. Everyone enjoyed a couple of drinks while watching a lovely sunset and enjoyed a wonderful barbeque dinner. Mike and Roberta Ellis and Aaron Spivey drove in for the Saturday morning conference making it a total of eight OKC Squadron members in attendance.
