AHOY! JULY 2008 FROM THE HELM Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow. - Helen Keller It is a wonderful start to summer. I have seen long bright days with scenic vistas, like fluffy clouds floating downwind to new lands. Summertime has started off so well I wonder if it can get any better. We have a season of activities to enjoy. Bassoons moan lively tunes. Kids run, scream, and splash on the beach. 4 th of July, and the 50 th anniversary of Pillar Point Harbor in August are coming too. Big boats race to and from Pillar Point Harbor and small boats race and train along the beach. Smiling sailors in sunglasses. Late nights around the fire pit mixed with the aroma of salt, seaweed, and dinner. Seals, otters, sea birds, and our other aquatic friends are going about their lives in our front yard. Seagull mom and dad, Gertrud and Healthcliff, have 3 eggs in their nest this year. There is a baby seal around our dock every day that prefers to lounge on the ferry. The sun is definitely shining on us. See you at the club. Kelly ON BOARD It was reported that we are ahead on the budget year to date by ~$2000. Clark Simms made a proposal to continue the maintenance activities for the Cal 20 fleet which was roundly supported by the board. Our membership is still on track to remain at 200 members. To provide more information on event costs, the Board agreed with the treasurer to request an expenses estimate for events with greater than a $300 cost which the treasurer will track. We are investigating why SMC Environmental Health Inspection sent a bill to us. Lisa talked with them and they dropped a penalty and may drop the charge entirely. Youth sailing and adult sailing classes are generating cash flow above expectations. GSD revised our sewer fee downward and we can now proceed to acquire our remaining permits for the expansion. BUILDING EXPANSION UPDATE We have a final fee estimate for our sewer permit. Due to the delay resolving the sewer fee we asked the county for a 30 day extension picking up the permit and they agreed. Our new deadline is July 25. In total the school fee, sewer and building permits will cost $38,024. The fees will be paid this month and we will have our permits. The refunding for the expansion will also be complete this month. We estimate that the monthly payment for the club will be near our current obligation but interest rates for construction keep moving around. Construction is expected to start after Labor Day with a target of a New Years Day completion. MEMBERSHIP MEETING The meeting went quickly. We covered the items as described in the On Board and the Building Expansion sections above so I won t repeat them here. We did hold the vote to approve Terry Ramseyer as a Life Member and whether or not to include and mail voting as options in the bylaws. Both proposals passed. Charlie Quest demonstrated impressive getting out the vote skills so that we met our quorum (43 votes). Thanks also go to Richard Sullo for organizing the ballot. NEW CLUB HOURS ON SATURDAYS 4:00 p.m. 9:00 p.m. Despite adding new volunteers to the ranks, we are still in GREAT need of more Volunteers to balance the schedule and have it continue to be a fun experience for all. In order to decrease the workload, the Club will reduce Saturday's hours to just one shift: 4:00 p.m. 9:00 p.m.

HMBYC AT ITS BEST jammer looked at his unfettered wrist and said, Oh, about 40 minutes. There is a move afoot to have Spencer do summer Blender Sundays with Jammin on the Deck providing the sun is shining, the seals are barking, and the breezes are balmy. FATHER S DAY BRUNCH A HUGE SMASH Nearly one hundred people turned up on June 15 th to enjoy the tunes and tomfoolery of The Schmatts three very accomplished bassoonists who play with local orchestras and symphonies. You just have to love a musical trio that can be contacted a and blows bubbles out of bassoons while cracking the corniest jokes between the Beatles, Bach and Gershwin numbers. Breakfast Burritos with fruit salad and coffee cakes were prepared by the wonderful Barbara Dinnsen and her trusty events crew of Jeff Hume, Carol Smith, Kay Burns, Terry and Cynthia Ramseyer, Clarke and Jean Simm. And thanks to Mike Madden, who made the third annual bassoon concert a real blast! : Spencer Nassar, Marcus Cjoy, Neil Hooper and Charlie Teall get acoustic. Deck Denizens rocked with HMBYC Blues. It was one of those mellow days that can t be planned, scheduled, or manufactured. It just has to happen when the weather is gorgeous, the crowd is mellow, and the bartender is on a roll. Sunday, June 8 th was one of those days. Watch Officer Spencer Nassar was making Blenders (aka fabulous Strawberry and Banana Daiquiris, Pina Coladas, Margaritas in Any Flavor You Like) and the jam session on the deck was a treat. When asked how long they had been playing together, one The Schmatts had a wonderful time Sunday. We must talk soon about the next event Bassooningly, Wendell
AHOY! JULY 2008 WORLD CRUISERS VISIT HMBYC John and Gaye Rodriguey visited JMBYYC three years ago en route to the Galapagos Islands. They stopped by on their way home last month and sent the following report: Thanks so much for your kind hospitality. We enjoyed meeting you and your fellow club members, and the great meal. Here's a little information about our trip: We started mid July 2005 when we departed Whidbey Island Washington and headed out the Straits of Juan de Fuca for the Pacific. We traveled down the coast, with stops in Newport Oregon and Eureka Ca., before relaxing for a couple weeks in the Bay Area. In early September we left San Francisco and our next stop was Pillar Point. We stayed for a week, and enjoyed 2 meals at HMBYC and met the members there as well as made friends with some cruisers that we still keep in touch with. After Pillar Point, we continued south with stops at Santa Cruz, Monterey, Santa Barbara, LA, Catalina Island and eventually San Diego. Here we prepared our boat Maestra for extended cruising and life in the tropics. In early November we joined the Baja HaHa, a rally of over 100 boats, and headed down the coast of Mexico. In the next 6 months we visited the Mexican Riviera all the way to Zihuatanejo, before heading back north to the Sea of Cortez. The Sea of Cortez is theoretically beyond the hurricane zone, but nobody told the weather gods. In September 2006, while staying in La Paz at Costa Baja Marina we were visited by Hurricane John. We were pretty prepared and suffered no damage even though the winds were about 100 mph. While in the sea, we really enjoyed the beautiful islands, warm weather, clear water, and great fishing. The next 6 months took us back down the coast of Mexico, past Zihua and then to Acapulco and Huatulco. Huatulco is a lovely town with a nice marina where you can wait for decent weather in order to cross the treacherous Gulf of Tehuantepec. The winds here can be extremely strong, so caution is advisable. Crossing the Tehuantepec takes you then to Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras and Costa Rica. These Central American countries are beautiful, rich in history and culture and each very different. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing them all before setting off again to go further south. Our next stop from Costa Rica would be Ecuador. This was a 700 mile open ocean leg that took us almost 4 days before we landed in La Libertad Ecuador. This would be our base for the next 6 months while we visited the Galapagos Islands, the Andes, Peru (and Machu Picchu), Argentina and Chile. This area was our original goal, and it didn't disappoint us. The unique animals in the Galapagos, the ruins of Peru, the wines of Chile, and the beef of Argentina! What an adventure. In October of 2007, it was time to start heading north, and so we headed for Panama. We were very impressed with all the islands, the jungles, the fish and animals, as well as the Panama Canal and its history. Then it was back through Central America, Mexico, and back to the states. This portion took another 6 months until we arrived back in San Diego. On May 30, 2008, we arrived back at Pillar Point to again enjoy the hospitality of HMBYC, nearly 3 years since our last visit. The next month will take us back to San Francisco, and then up the coast of California, Oregon and Washington. We plan to take this part of our trip very carefully and keep a close eye out for weather. We expect to return home to Whidbey Island in early July. Cheers John & Gaye Rodriguey MV Maestra Oak Harbor Yacht Club Photo by Barry Lifland HMBYC BECOMES WILDLIFE SANCTUARY On Monday 5May 19, 2008 Barry Lifland was sailing around the club house are got up close and personal with the harbor seals that have adopted the Club s floating dock as their own. Barry wonders Are they new members, or a 'sail-in; definitely a 'swim-in'... Hope they are just visiting!
MORE ADVENTURES AT SEA HMBYC members John Bringetto and Amanda Burke of HMBYC left here on their 40 monohull about five years ago for Central and South America, spent a year in Newport, Oregon in the harbor near his parents, then set out earlier this year for the South Pacific. The Marquesas Islands Position: 'S, 'W Hi, this is the first opportunity we have had to get on line, so apologies for the delay in writing and for writing to everyone at the same time. Hope you weren't worried about us. We are now on an island named Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas and we have internet access. Anyway, here's a recap of our past month!! We started out from Cabo on March 15 th on our 2,600-miles passage with reinforced winds from the gale in California 20 knots of wind and 8-12' seas. We arrived in Hiva Oa island in the Marquesas on April 10 th after 26 days at sea from Cabo San Lucas. It was an arduous 26 days at sea. It wasn't the perfect sailing conditions that we had always expected for this crossing however, we did have two or three very pleasant days with almost flat seas and the trade winds at 15 knots. Memorable moments of our passage: Going through the ITCZ (inter-tropical convergence zone) which means squalls, 30- knot gusts of wind and thunderstorms. It took us two days to pass through the ITCZ and then we arrived in the doldrums. The night a flying fish hit Amanda in the chest as she came out into the cockpit to take her watch. It was attracted by her flashlight! Finding flying fish and squid on the deck nearly every morning. John having to raise himself up the mast twice while the boat is yawing to release reefing lines that had got caught in the spreaders (something that has never happened before in the nine years we've Half Moon Bay Yacht Club Newsletter been cruising!). Very scary to see him swinging on the outside of our lifelines. Crossing the equator on April 2 nd and seeing the GPS change from latitude degrees north to south. Beautiful cloudless starry nights. Passing no more than 15 yards away from two sleeping whales. We traveled not more than two miles away from another boat for the entire trip, s/v Wind Dancer, a family from Juneau, Alaska. Everyone said it couldn't be done, but we did it. It took some effort as we sail at different speeds, but by adjusting sails, we accomplished it. To travel that distance, it was definitely a secure feeling to have another boat nearby in case of emergency. In the entire trip we only encountered two ships. At dawn on April 10 th we saw the most beautiful sight land!!! We arrived in a gorgeous bay, named Hanaiapa on Hiva Oa Island. Two other boats we know, who we left with on March 15 th, were anchored there. What a sight to see hillsides covered in palm trees and luscious greenery, hearing the goats bleating as they climbed the hillsides, and a native of the island coming out to greet us in his outrigger. We anchored, exhausted, bruised but so excited to be here. Within two hours we were ashore. The first few seconds on land were strange. We both felt dizzy and had to get our balance! Rio, a native of the island greeted us. The Marquesas are French so he speaks French and Amanda was able to interpret for all of us. Rio took us on the most amazing walk. Every few yards we were tasting fruits that were growing on our path grapefruit (pamplemousse), guava, nuts, papaya, mango, soursop, star fruit, cider apples, coconut, bananas. It is so lush and the air is fragrant. Extremely humid. We thanked Rio for his hospitality, and he said, no, he thanked us for visiting his village. There are 96 inhabitants of Hanaiapa and they receive a subsidy from the French government to live here. There is an elementary school on the island and kids of high school age go to school in the larger towns and return home for the weekends. The men all have tattoos on their chests and the women wear flowers in their hair.
AHOY! JULY 2008 We returned to the boat laden with fruit that we had traded for canned food. Our first night of sleep at anchor was so wonderful. The first time we had both been able to sleep at the same time. Even though the anchorage is not still there is constant swell coming in we are used to it after being at sea for so long. We've spent the last few days making repairs to the boat, handwashing our laundry, and then snorkeling or taking walks in the village. On our second afternoon we were walking with Rio and he invited us to watch a traditional music and dance group rehearsal at the Catholic Church. It was so moving to watch. The women's beautiful dance movements the way they move their hands, and the complete opposite style that the men dance with their fists clenched, jumping with both legs bent and apart and rigid. It was quite an emotional experience for us to be there. After the show, Rio gave each boat a frozen leg of goat to take back with us!!! We made a wonderful goat curry the following day. We feel guilty now when we see those cute goats climbing on the hillside around us. On Saturday, the supply ship, which is also a cruise ship, arrived on its bi-monthly visit. It's 200' long and it anchored close to us and almost swung into our stern. John was sitting in the cockpit as it nearly hit us. The ship stops to let the thirty or so passengers walk around the village, but also to pick up copra (dried coconut) that is the main income of the island. They take the copra to Tahiti where it is used for making many things, including lotions, shampoo, etc. Anyway, later in the day we had a call on the VHF radio from the owner of the ship, Jules Wong he asked us if we had sailed from San Francisco and he just wanted to chat with us. We probably won't have much opportunity to in the next few months. In French Polynesia there are only three places where we can access WiFi and we will when we can. It's about $10 an hour and very slow! So please don't think we've forgotten you all. THE NATIONALS ARE COMING! THE NATIONALS ARE COMING! August will see the C-15 National Regatta once again at Half Moon Bay Yacht Club. On Monday, June 23, a large group met at the Club to begin planning. As always when a regatta is going on, many hands are needed on the water, in the water, and by the water. If you want to host a visiting sailor, drive a chase boat, serve on the Committee Boat, be a spotter, timer, signaler, serve on a Protest Committee (15-minute justice), help with parking trailers, be on hand to provide first aid and/or hypothermia treatment (rush a freezing sailor home to your hot tub?), videotape the racing, help post unofficial standings on the website, help with food service (breakfast and lunch), please contact C-15 Nationals Volunteer Coordinator Jessica Sullo at jess10977@gmail.com and let her know what you would like to do and what days you can be available to help make the weekend unforgettable. Lots of love from John and Amanda
