2 AHOY! October 2006 FROM THE HELM The frost is not on the pumpkins yet, but the pumpkins are definitely visible. It s that time of the year again. The General Membership Meeting in September was well attended. Maxwell Beaumont, our architect, fought the traffic and gave us a presentation of our proposed new building. The new Board of Directors for was approved by the membership and will be: Commodore Kelly Pike Vice Commodore Terri Lahey Rear Commodore Neil Hooper Port Captain Jeff Hume Treasurer Beverly Ambrose Facilities Neal Wehtje Secretary Barbara Dinnsen Membership Stephanie Breslin Member at Large Kay Burns Please give them your support next year. The next big event is Pumpkin Festival. If you haven t signed up to help, I encourage you to do so. We really need help behind the scene: helping to set up the booth, clean up on Saturday, clean up on Sunday and taking the booth down. Many hands can make the work easy and fun. If it s just a few people it s a bigger job than it needs to be. Please contact Claudia Linhares at mentalfloss46@aol.com. I came up with a great idea for my costume for the Halloween Party, but then forgot it. There is still time to remember or I ll have to come up with something else. This is one of the best parties of the year. Start looking for just the right thing now. And last, but not least, the Commodore s Ball is not far away. Mullin s Bar & Greill can only seat 104 of us. That s just 52 couples. You can make your reservations at 2blackcats@comcast.net. Move nights, sailing Sundays, Friday evening sails HMBYC is a fun Club to belong to and each of us is important to making it all work. See you at the Club - Kay Burns, Commodore NEW MEMBERS The following people are our newest members. Please search them out and give them a warm Yacht Club welcome! A wonderful fabulous time! We had guests from many Yacht brochette dinner was served by our friends from Clubs around the Bay Area and the harbor was Special Event catering. 4 AHOY! October 2006 CAL 20 SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM-HUGE SUCCESS Along with increasing the number of Cal 20 boats, membership in the HMBYX Cal 20 Sponsorship Program has now grown to over 20 very enthusiastic members. Charter members were Adam Quest, now attending medical school (Dad Charlie is taking over) and Sirje Bewley. At the kickoff meeting and dinner at the Bewley s beach house, Charlie Quest gave a superb, highly informative and entertaining presentation reviewing the many points of the Cal 20 Sponsorship program. Thanks to Charlie and also to Neal Wehtje and Terri Lahey who offered tips about tuning the boats and other pointers. As time goes on, progress reports will be provided and you can read about the program and its guidelines on the HMBYC bulletin board. Hopefully, the line of people waiting for a boat will grow so long on the club s floating dock that soon we ll have 6 or 7 Cal 20s! If you have any questions regarding this program, contact Sirje Bewley at yopish@aol.com. The fifth Cal 20 was floated-off at Pillar Point boat launching site on a recent Sunday s late afternoon hour by a very happy Cal 20 group of Sponsors. The celebration called for champagne on our first sailing toward HMBYC, which became a true sunset cruise. The experienced skipper in our group, always so helpful with anything related to fixing boats and sailing, is the indefatigable Charlie Quest. He conducted the whole process from the bringing the boat from somewhere else to JMBYC, through out getting it ready enough in the boatyard for launching. Next came the ingenious rigging part with improvisation on the spot by the guys by searching for an additional metal ring on a key chain! We are aware that all the Cal 20s need repairs with some new parts and sails for sure. That s why we are having the Cal 20 Sponsorship Program to help out. The Launching of Pluto s Revenge Photos and Story by Sirje Bewley 4 While painting the lower part of the hull and keel, Sirje Bewley got an inkling what Michelangelo must have felt like while painting the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Under Bob Cantillo s experienced guidance as a builder, in order to achieve the best results, all four of us had to start painting from one end and continue until the who job was done. His delightful wife, Suzy Pinkerton was part of the painting and working team and kindly came with lunches and snacks for us. Thank you all so very much! It was such a fun day. Thank you to Mark McDonell for stopping to help with the float-off while biking on your way home. Thanks to Neal Wehtje who always comes around in the boatyard to check who needs what, and also to Liz Allison, Mike Day and of course Kelly Pike, without who and his many helpers we wouldn t have a floating dock for all the club s boats.

5 Half Moon Bay Yacht Club Newsletter The Cal 20 Sponsorship Program is but one facet but hopefully a very helpful one involving the Cal 20 boats. Many members are involved in other ways such as classes on Cal 20s, pleasure sailing and so on. Remember, the idea is to have FUN!! SAILING CLASS An Adult Sailing class was held on September 16, 17 and 23 rd. We d like to thank Neal Wehtje and Kathy Barbarino for organizing the class and thank those who volunteered their time to instruct us. Thank you Dick Schubert for the classroom training, and to the skippers on the water, who guided the fledgling sailors. Thank you to skippers Kelly Pike, Charlie Quest, Larry Miller, Steve Smith, Urs Willimann, Terri Lahey, Spencer Nassar and Harry Yselstein on the safety boat. If I missed a skipper name, let me know and you ll be mentioned in a later newsletter. UPCOMING EVENTS FLEET WEEK Fleet week in San Francisco is always a fun time.
