2 Page 2 Tell Tales From PICYA to You. As your PI- CYA delegate I attend monthly dinner/business m e e t i n g hosted by clubs all over our Northern California area ranging from here on the coast to Lake Tahoe. PICYA stands for Pacific Inter Club Yacht Assn. an amalgam of 108 yacht clubs through out the Bay to Tahoe region. This month s meeting was at the Stockton Y.C. in Stockton on the banks of the Calaveras River. What a lovely club. Their lawn slopes down to the river & has B-B- Q s & a picnic table area. Their docks are covered sheds to protect from the high summer temps & sun. We got a refreshing Treasurers report. This year all events are not only covering their expenses but making a small profit. PICYA sponsors college scholarships for member s (we are!) children/grandchildren. The deadline for applications is June 30. Contact me for more info. & the forms. Good Time, Plus Informative We had a great turn-out Sunday at the General Membership Meeting. Lots of information was disseminated; not to mention yummy food. The club is in the middle of many summer activi- Our annual Youth & CHISPA Regattas will be sailed on July 30 at Sequoia Y.C. Here is our chance to get some outside the club competition. It is close to us this time. CHISPA will be sailed in Lazers & is not a youth event. The youth division will be sailed in FJs. Come on we have at least one Lazer in the yard. Let s make our presence known. There is even no entry fee. The entry fee has been paid because of our dues to PICYA. Larry Draper from our neighbor club at Oyster Point will again lead the kitchen/cooking effort for the Wheelchair Regatta, held in Sept. Our very own Natalie Sturm is heading up shirt sales. This will be the 15 th annual edition of this wonderful event for our disabled & hospital confined vets. Disabled vets from VA homes & hospitals from around the Bay Area are brought into Encinal Y.C., on the Oakland Estuary, to get a day out. PICYA member s power boats come in to take the vets for a ride out onto SF Bay. Lots of volunteers are there to help get them on board, give them an afternoon Bar-B-Que, band music to enjoy & socialization. Larry ties, & we d like you to be a part of it! Please do not miss our next quarterly meeting on Sunday, September 11th. See you on water & land, Your Board of Directors talked about clubs that hold benefit dinners. I will be asking for a benefit dinner here in HMB. Planning is underway for PICYA s Fall Management Conference which will be Sat. Oct. 15 at Pittsburg Y.C. Here is an opportunity for us to go & learn. The day is filled with speakers on subjects of boating & especially club management. The event chair is planning on new speakers & new subjects. The bar at Pittsburg is not to be missed. It has a great view out onto the San Joaquin River. Ocean going freighters use Pittsburg YC as a turning marker going down river. Here is another chance to avail ourselves of a PICYA opportunity. Thank you so much for the chance to serve as your rep. Attendance is not limited to just me. All you have to do is get in a reservation. Next month we will be in Antioch at Bridge Marina Y.C. It is usually the 1 st Monday of the month, but due to 4 th of July this meeting will be on Monday July 11. The August meeting will be Monday Aug. 1 at San Rafael Y.C. I would enjoy company on the drive!! Delegate, Liz Allison
3 Page 3 SIGN UP FOR YOUTH SAILING CAMP NOW! We are in FULL SWING & LOVIN IT. Come down & sign your child up now to avoid disappointment. Why not sign them up with a friend! Registration forms are available on the website, or Lucy at sailing@hmbyc.org with any inquiries. Linger with Lucy THANK YOU TO KELLY & THE DOCK SQUAD What a slick operation, carried out with military precision! As you may have noticed, the finger docks were painted on Saturday & then assembled on Sunday in under an hour good work! Lucy & Patrick called upon the kids to help fix the dock Also, thanks to the other C15 sponsors Neil Merrilees, Rick Winans & Charlie Quest. It is great to see the boats in such good shape. We couldn t resist having a tes sail before docking them on the newly assembled finger dock ready for the summer! Lucy Gillies Sailing Chair Camp is like Christmas. You look forward to it every year, & don t want it to ever end. Chelsea (Counselor in Training) THANK YOU C15 SPONSORS CAL 20 SPONSORS RACE After many months of hard work, 4 Club C15 s were launched on Sunday, ready for camp to start on Monday phew! A big thank you to Patrick Melley for maintaining attention to detail & keeping the pace going!
4 OYRA Offshore Yacht Racing Association Sail & BBQ The OYRA sail in is one of the special events of the year. These big boats, some in excess of 80 feet, begin their race in front of the St. Francis Yacht Club under the auspices of the HMBYC Race Committee led by our own Richard & Heather. The boats come down from San Francisco Bay, almost flying with sails and spinnakers aloft to cross the HMBYC finish line located just outside Pillar Point Harbor entrance. The finish line Race committee, aboard La Boheme, a Catalina 36, will tally the finishers and toast each racer with an excellent libation from Terry s well-stocked wine cellar. The sailors make their way to the Clubhouse and Event Center for a hearty meal an grog, to see who has best bragging rights about the trip down. DINNER MENU: BBQ Sausages, Hamburgers, or Veggie Burgers Full Condiment Selection Cold Salad Bar Chef s Choice Dessert ALL for only $10.00 with reservation. Tickets at the door: $15.00 RSVP: eventscommittee@hmbyc.org. Richard & Heather HMB 4th of July PARADE with HMBYC. Charles Quest & Michelle Dragony are organizing the HMBYC 4th of July parade celebration. Join us at 8:00, downtown, to decorate the boats. Or, be there at 11:00 for the parade to throw candy & wave at everybody! Tying a Boat to the Dock For those skippers out there who don t sail too often, here is a reminder on how to tie up a boat to the dock. With the ferocious weather we had on Friday & Saturday, some of the Cal 20 s took a bit of a battering in the high winds & turbulent waters. Thank you to Jay Howell & Andy Michael for checking them over on Saturday & re-securing where necessary. Face the boat bow into the wind (where possible) Secure the boat to the Leeward side of the dock (where space permits) Tie 2 Fenders on the side of the boat nearest the dock See you on the water. Lucy Gillies Sailing Committee Chair Use a Bow Line, Ster Line AND Spring line.
