2 Page 2 Tell Tales Hey Sponsors, Racers & Wantabees! This Saturday the 10th is the September Keelboat Sponsors Races. Come on out and enjoy a day of racing even if you never have, we keep it fun and enjoyable, not intimidating. Well, for the most part! Competition does bring it out in some people. All are welcome to attend. The sponsors have first rights to the boats in exchange for all their hard work keeping the fleet available for all. Last month we had 4 lasers out with the Cal 20s, and we welcome all fleets to come and enjoy the day. 10am is the skippers meeting. Plan on being on the dock to riggem & racem by 11am. We generally get 3 races in before we stop for a short lunch and restroom break. Then, back on the water for 3 more. Just about time for the bar to open. Dave Slater, Dale Ross & Clive Jones are targeted to be dethroned by other sponsors, with Peggy Ruse & Lori Rhodes riding close behind their wake in points standings. I plan on being at the club between 3 and 4pm on Friday to pull boats to shore & scrub bottoms, if anyone wants to assist. Or, make sure I don t tie a bucket to your keel...now there is some incentive to help out! Even if you can t do the whole day, come enjoy what you can. We are very accommodating. See you this week-end! Dave Morris Oh, What a Hoot! Ray, I wanted to say how well I thought the Labor Day events on Sunday went. I know you & lots of other YC staff worked your butts off, but as I observed it, the visiting sailors all had a good time, enjoyed a very fine meal, loved the band, & had a good time in spite of the famous fog & the surging ferry. Just to make sure someone lets you know it was appreciated, let me say that you guys deserve a lot of thanks for putting on such a good event. Mike (Michael B. Day) Yes, it was a fine feast & foot stomping hoot!! Carol & Jeff wanted to thank the following people, without which, it couldn t be done: Laurie Dunston, Carliana Johnston, Terry Lahey, Gayle Pietras, Natalie Sturm, Lucy Gillies, Kay Burns, Phyllis Smith, Todd Wright, Gary Namen, Margie Gator, Stephen Kelly, Terry Ramseyer, Cynthia Ramseyer, Neal Wehtje, Bernice Marshall, Ellen Clark, Chris Dobie, Sandra Scowen, Jay Howell, Judy McCarthy, Leslie O Brian, Barry Lifland, Dale Ross, Diane Ross, Denis & Margrit Pichou, Barb Walt, Barb Dinnsen, Mike Madden, Greg Smith, Liz Allison, Beth Lee, Clarke Simm, Paul & Ginger Minoletti & Dan Ambrosi. Please accept our apologies if we ve missed anyone, or spelled their name incorrectly. I too want to thank Carol Smith & Jeff Hume at this time for their unrelenting work & hours upon hours of service as Co-Chairs of the Events Committee. Bravo!!! Editor, Natalie

4 LASER SAIL OFF Labor Day Wow - what a day! There were 11 Lasers on the water (thanks Patrick, Charlie and Karen for all your hard work to get so many boats race ready!). The wind was strong and gusty - providing really challenging conditions for racing! Kent ran the races from the end of the dock and set a course that enabled good viewing from shore - so I hope that the audience appreciated the entertainment being provided by the racing, capsizing and near misses! Each race saw at least a couple of boats capsize, but I think Marcus wins the prize for the most dips! Gybing proved a bit challenging on the downwind leg - with this stretch seeing the most action. Mike adopted a very sensible approach by tacking at the gybe mark. On occasion this allowed an adventurous boat to capitalize on an opportunity for a quick rounding of the mark - but it did at least mean that he remained upright and dry! Thanks Kent for running the races and taking such great photos and video footage - these will be posted on the HMBYC gallery shortly for your viewing pleasure! Rick was the winner of the day, teaching us all that a good start is an essential race tactic. Another good lesson learnt the hard way TWICE - was how important it is to have a stopper knot in the end of the mainsheet - thanks Charlie! Thanks everyone for taking part, it made for a really fun days racing and great way to end a busy weekend. Hopefully the bruises, bumps and scrapes heal soon so we can get out there for more fun soon! Final Scores after 7 gruelling races 1st - Rick Winnans 12 points 2nd - Jay Howell 16 points 3rd - Lucy Gillies 19 points 4th - Karen Flick 22 points 5th - Charlie Quest 27 points 6th - Patrick Melley 32 points 7th - Neil Merreles 32 points 8th - Marcus Choy 45 points 9th - Mike Mann 50 points 10th - Hunter Gillies 58 points 11th - Richard Hector 69 points Lucy Gillies Chair Sailing Committee Ooops... Oktoberfest Frauen...we need YOU! Tryouts & workouts for the Who can carry the most filled beer steins without spilling any competition will be Wednesday, September 14 at 6:00pm. Ages 21 to 91 may enter...the older, the mightier!! Pot supper will be provided. This will be a snap! Madchen, gehen!!
