Commodore s Ball Pre-Reception We wanted this year s Commodore s Ball to be more inclusive, to give those who are not attending the Ball an opportunity to share in the celebration. So, a free pre-reception will begin on the Club deck at 4:00 PM. The deck will be covered to protect you from possible rain. Light hors d oeuvres will be served, guitarist Stevan Pasero will entertain and a pleasant afternoon will be enjoyed by all, at What s Happening This Week?? no cost for appetizers. As always, the bar in the Old Clubhouse will remain open throughout the evening, serving at normal bar prices. At around 5:30, Ball guests will begin arriving and you can critique their tropical elegance attire and continue to join in the fun. At 6:30, Ball guests will sit down to dinner in the New Building and reemerge at 8:00 to dance to the Music of Sweet Thursday, November 3, 6-9pm ~ Knit Happens Talk, until 10:00. You can also participate in that part of the Ball. It s our way of saying to all of our members, Thanks for supporting the Club throughout the year! We hope to see you there. 2 Page 2 Tell Tales Last Gasp Regatta Saturday, November 5. Come out and enjoy some "lowkey, high-fun" racing around the bouys before the Cal 20 fleet gets put away for the winter, and Daylight Savings time ends with a "fall back" to Dayl i g h t S t a n d a r d t i m e. (Remember to set your clocks back one hour at 0200 hrs on Sunday!) All HMBYC and member owned boats are welcome to participate. Skippers Meeting at 1000 hrs, with the first race scheduled for 1100 hrs. No races will start after 1300 hrs. Start and finish off the dock in front of the Club. Please "bring-your-ownlunch" to enjoy ashore immediately following the racing. No entry fee, and no awards, except for bragging rights for winners of what might be the final regatta of the 2011 season. Weather permitting. Forecasts of rain or excessive wind speeds may result in a cancellation. Questions? Kent Arndt Pumpkin Roundup On Saturday the club hosted the annual Pumpkin Roundup. 14 boats participated all with full crews and a few with more than a full crew. Pumpkins, Ghosts (water balloons), Frodo's ring, axes and a Golden Gourd were all scattered about for the boats to retrieve to deduct from their time around the race course. Strategies varied from run hard and fast with minimal gathering to slow and through gathering. Minimal crew to maximum body count stuffed in the bilge. The winner of the day went to Pluto with a full boat and the slowest time but the maximum points of deductions. Weather was perfect with just enough wind to make it exciting but not too much to be a problem. Youngest crew were the Reynolds kids 11 and 12. Oldest crew well we won't go there. Best costumed crew went to Uranus and the crew of Gilligan's Island. I couldn't figure why anyone would wade in the water to the ferry in high heels and a white dress till I saw the rest of the story...etched wine glasses were awarded to the winners. Smiles were awarded to all. A fun and memorable day for all who were present. If you would like to see the pictures go to perdave.morris/ ?authke y=gv1srgcif96lptzo3towe download what you like or I can you the picture if needed. Many thanks to Flo's sister Laura for the many beautiful photo's and judging our best costume winner. Many thanks to all participants for making this another fun event. 3 Page 3 A Christmas Carol HMBYC Night at Coastal Rep Returns! A new season of Coastal Rep productions is starting and HMBYC is continuing our pre-show festivities on the first Saturday night of each show. Join your fellow yacht club members for the holiday classic A Christmas Carol at our local theater. On Saturday November 19th at 6:30 pm we will meet at a member's home for potluck heavy hors d'oeuvres and drinks then con- tinue on to the theater for the 8 pm curtain. Get your tickets by ing tickets@coastalrep.com or calling Coastal Rep directly at (650) and then DebKessler@comcast.net or LBNassar@yahoo.com to let us know you will be participating. Your Theatre Coordinators Deb Kessler Leann Nassar The Palais Garnier Comes to the Water s Edge at HMBYC Liz Allison Richard Calabrese, & Terry Ramseyer Present: A Night at the Opera Gaetano Dinizetti s La Fille du Regiment (The Daughter of the Regiment) On Saturday November 19 this intrepid group will offer an Italian themed dinner as well as a wonderful performance of Donizetti s opera, La Filled du Regiment. This delightful comedic romp starring Natalie Dessay and Juan Diego Florez should offer a non intimidating introduction to the art form for those who are new comers as well as an enjoyable experience for seasoned opera fans. In this offering no one dies and love conquers all in the end. Ms Dessay s performance is particularly brilliant with a lot of physical comedy (think Lucy Gilles here) and magnificent singing. I have been assured by the women who have seen this production that our tenor, Juan Diego Florez is at least as handsome as Jay Howell and has a voice to match. We plan to serve dinner at 6:00 and start the performance in a dinner theater format. This being a two act work, there will be one intermission when our sinfully good lo cal (he he he) cream filled fruit tarts will be served. The planned menu will include chicken plicate, risotto, mozzarella sticks, green peas, bread, and the above mentioned dessert. The dinner cost will be $ Reservations are appreciated so that we can shop and prepare accordingly. See you at the Opera!!! Gaetano Dinizetti

5 November 2, 2011 He Said What!? So there I was with my stalwart crew, trying to get the boat rigged. First the skipper said to Bend your Main. Then he told me to start with my clew at the gooseneck! He told me my topping lift worked better than my crutch. Then I slapped him! After the dust settled and my Skipper came around, he said: It s obvious that you need a little nomenclature in your life. Here, let me sketch you a sail and attach all the occlusions and accruements for your edification. So he did. Here it is. I now know what he means when he says my telltale is hanging down. Then he said my hank was pulling on my headstay. I slapped him again! P.S. I still don t know what bending a sail is! Someone at the Club should know. I ll ask around this Friday night.
