2 Page 2 BUILD AN OPTIMIST PROJECT This season we are aiming to get 6 Optimists in time for Summer Sailing Camp. The ultimate goal is 12 (with a couple good enough to compete in races on the bay!) Each Boat will cost approximately $1200 each. The sailing budget will fund some of this project, but we need your help with the balance. Here is what things cost... I have a bit of time available till the end of January. There is a learning curve to it. This prevents you from damaging the hulls more than necessary and not using more soda blasting media than is necessary to get the job done. Things to keep in mind are that it is dusty work. A pair of coveralls would be best that you can take off and shake out before going home. It is a bit slow and tedious but not hard work. Just takes a bit of time but it isn't going to make you break a sweat. So far we found that a team of 3 works pretty well giving each person 15 minutes blasting then a break while the other 2 take their turn. We have 3 good dust respirators for all to use. If you don't wish to use the club respirators buy your own. Harbor Freight has them for less than $20. A paper dust mask is not acceptable. Remember that the bottom paint is coming off as well. You can wipe down the mask with rubbing alcohol or vodka or whiskey if you like. Better to breath a germ than old bottom paint. SHOPPER NEEDED" Have you ever wanted to shop until you drop? Your Port Captain Natalie It is best done during the week when there is less activity around the club. The wind carries most of the spent soda media dust away so a north west wind takes it over the bay. It is only baking soda and not much of that. The paint is heavy and falls to the ground around the boat as it would with sanding or scraping. It doesn't throw much grit back at you like sand blasting does since the soda breaks apart in to It fine dust. Less activity means less cars in the area which might get dust on them. I would rather avoid that. You cannot blast when it is raining or wet. The soda will help prevent the weeds in the yard as well so we won't have to pull so many. I have the new water based paint as well. It is white. We will put on 3 thin coats after the bottoms are cleaned and any imperfections filled and sanded smooth. We will add 1 or 2 more coats at the waterline. The boats I am planning on getting blasted and the order are Uranus, Happy Hour, Vahine, Pluto,& Knot Now. Once one or two of those goes into the water we will pull Venus and Argo out and do Venus as well. Argo and Ominne will use up the rest of our copper based bottom paint this season and be blasted next season Interiors of Pluto and Ominne need to be cleaned and painted as well. One coat of the primer sealer and one coat of gloss whiteterry Ramseyer and crew built a heavy duty roll around table and saw horse of the same height for the boat yard. Mark and Katrin recently moved to Half Moon Bay from Los Alamos, New Mexico. After being landlocked for several years, they are delighted to finally be back near the coast and have the opportunity to sail again! Katrin first learned to sail at a summer camp in Germany in her teens, hopping around the islands in the North Sea. Since then her sailing excursions have been mostly on small lakes in New Jersey. The evening meal will highlight more unique tastes of the Big Easy from crawfish to shrimp tocrab in many presentations, followed by special Cafe du Monde coffees and desert selections. Any empty boxes need to be broken down and disposed of properly. In cleaning up after events, check to see that all the party decorations have been removed. Tide pool Ecology Saturday January 21st, 2pm Join us for an introduction to the coastal intertidal zone of the central California coast. Learn about one of the most dynamic habitats on earth and creatures adapted to a life of crashing waves and exposure to the air twice a day. A short lecture will be followed by a two hour tour of tide pools near Pescadero. Bring warm jackets and boots or spare shoes for getting wet. Larry Miller is professional oceanographer with the U. S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park. Larry Miller lives in El Granada and is a member of the Pescadero Conservation Alliance. 7 Yoga: It s not what you think! For starters, it s good for sailors and kayackers. Most of us don t think of yoga as a muscle-building activity, but those downward dog postures really strengthen arms and shoulders. Yoga also helps protect and strengthen the back and relieve stress from the neck and shoulders all useful for those of us exerting ourselves on or in the water, as well as for those of us working at computers. Malinda has focused on yoga as therapeutic, and she found that it helped heal her own low back pain. This led her to Loyola Marymount University, where she became certified in advanced yoga therapy. Several of us from the yacht club have taken her classes at Joy of Being in Moss Beach, and we asked her to talk to the club about how yoga can be helpful in our activities. She s low-key, safety-oriented and not at all preachy She ll talk and answer questions from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday night, Feb. 25, and dinner will follow at 7. And while yoga may not be what you think, the meal will be. We can t help it if we love Indian food. Both enjoy being in and on the water; Alec sailed when he was young and Kristen has been learning to sail. They spent time sailing in the bay and did a bareboat charter in the BVI. They recently bought a Hobie Wave and are looking forward to bringing it coast-side to Kristen has been learning to enjoy.
