Bran+Luebbe PwerMn Chapter 3 System descriptin 25 3 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION 3.1 Overview This chapter cntains infrmatin abut General PwerMn applicatins (sectin 3.2) PwerMn Klrimeter/Silikmeter (sectin 3.3) Cnstructin and layut (sectin 3.4) Single-stream and multi-stream peratin (sectin 3.5) Sample value utputs (sectin 3.6) Technical specificatin (sectin 3.7) 3.2 Applicatins f PwerMn Analyzers PwerMn Klrimeter and Silikmeter belng t the On-line Mnitr series f Bran+Luebbe analyzers. These PwerMn analyzers perate fully autmatically with wet-chemical methds. They measure n-line trace cncentratin f different parameters in liquids, e.g. phsphate, nitrate, ammnia, chlrine, metals and silicate. Applicatin areas include pwer generatin, water treatment, chemical industry, chemical surface treatment, waste water. The mnitrs are used fr several purpses, including: Prcess Mnitring The change in analytical result is used as early warning f changes in a prductin prcess. It must be intervened t btain the desired values. Example: Change in cncentratin f metals r acids in galvanizatins- and pickling baths. Prcess Cntrl Here the analytical result is used in a clsed-lp cntrl system t initiate changes in reactin cnditins r raw material dsing.

26 Bran+Luebbe PwerMn Example: Change in cncentratin f phsphate in waste water t cntrl the dsing f precipitating agents. Prcess Registratin The analytical results must be recrded. These results are prbative fr the crrect functin f the plant r are the basis fr investigatin f pllutant emissins. Example: Cntent f nutrient parameters in the utlet f sewage plants. System Mnitring Here the change in cncentratin f an indicatr substance is used as an alarm trigger fr an errr cnditin. Example: The cncentratin f silicate in demineralized water. A rise indicates an exhaustin f the anin exchanger in pwer plants. System Supervisin Here the analysis values have t persist within a given tlerance t ensure that certain cmpnents f the system will nt be damaged. Example: Measurement f irn in biler feed water. Accrding t the type f applicatin, varius measuring methds are necessary. Bran+Luebbe Analyzers are available in different versins cvering many different applicatin fields: Bran+Luebbe PwerMn Klrimeter Bran+Luebbe PwerMn Silikmeter All PwerMn Analyzers have the fllwing perfrmance characteristics in cmmn: Shrt respnse time Lw sensitivity t interference Lw drift High mechanical reliability Operatin in harsh envirnment Easy peratin Lw peratin and maintenance csts Lw space requirement Lng life

Bran+Luebbe PwerMn Chapter 3 System descriptin PwerMn Klrimeter and Silikmeter The Klrimeter is a system fr the autmatic phtmetric measurement f substances disslved in water. Amng thers it is used fr measuring phsphate in municipal r industrial waste water. The Silikmeter is a Klrimeter that is specially designed fr the analysis f silica. The system is permanently cnnected t the prcess being mnitred and receives a cnstant sample feed. The peratin f the system is cyclic. Sample ant reagent(s) are delivered in predetermined prprtins by peristaltic pumps and mixed. The reagent(s) and the sample underg a chemical reactin that prduces a clred cmpund prprtinal t the sample cncentratin At the end f this reactin time the reactin mixture enters the phtmeter flw cell. Mnchrmatic light is passed thrugh it and the absrbance (light absrptin) is measured electrically. This reading is used t calculate the cncentratin. The mathematical basis f the cncentratin calculatin is described in Appendix C. 3.4 Cnstructin and layut f the PwerMn Each PwerMn cnsists f a munting panel (Analyzer sectin) which cntains all measuring cmpnents. The analyzer is wall-munted in a husing r n a rack. Danger: It is pssible that by blckage in the flexible tubing system hse cuplings cme lse. Dangerus liquids can thereby spray. If the analyzer is munted in a husing the peratr is prtected against splashes by the clsed dr. It shuld be checked thrugh the windw f the husing dr whether there is a leakage. If the analyzer is nt munted in a husing the peratr has t wear suitable prtective clthing and eye prtectin when wrking near the system. Please refer t the safety advices n the munting plate. The measures depend n the applicatin. Pay attentin t the reagents that are used and t the sample cnsistence. Analyzer sectin The analyzer sectin cntains the measuring cmpnents where the chemical reactin and the measurement take place. Furthermre the analyzer sectin cntains a Tuch Screen fr the display f measured values and messages, and manual inputs. The cmpnents f the analyzer are munted n a pivtable munting plate.

28 Bran+Luebbe PwerMn Cntrl sectin The cntrl sectin is lcated at the rear f the pivtable plate. The cntrl sectin regulates the peratin f pumps and valves, calculates results and utputs data t the display r external cmputer. The cntrl sectin is prtected by an additinal cver where the micrprcessr, pwer supply, etc. are lcated. The analyzer and the cntrl sectin will be described in mre details in the fllwing Analyzer sectin The analyzer sectin cntains all cmpnents used fr the chemical measuring prcess, including pumps, valves, reagents, waste cnnectins, lw-sample detectr and a phtmeter. Fig. 3.1 shws a typical example f the analyzer sectin fr a Silikmeter. The figure shws a multi-stream system. Depending n the applicatin, the analyzer sectin can cntain further elements, such as reductrs, heating elements r mixers. The quantity f pumps and valves depends n the number f measuring pints and the applicatin. A detailed descriptin f yur specific system is shwn in the Flw Diagram and the Tubing Diagram f the Methd Descriptin in Appendix C. The Flw Diagram cntains a schematic plan f all cmpnents necessary fr the chemical analysis. The table belw the Diagram lists the specific cmpnents fr yur system. The Tubing Diagram shws details f the analyzer cnstructin, including details f materials, dimensins and tubing dispsitin. The fllwing figure shws a PwerMn analyzer sectin.

USB Interface The analyzer sectin nrmally cnsists f fllwing cmpnents: Phtmeter In the phtmeter the light absrptin f the reactin mixture is measured. The cncentratin f the measured cmpnent is calculated frm the absrbance. Peristaltic pumps Peristaltic pumps are used t meter the sample, reagents and calibratin slutins. The pumps cnsist f a cntrlled mtr, gearbx, rtr, tube-bed and dsing tube. They are triggered by the sequence prgram. Different dsage vlumes are realized by the usage f a specific dsing tube and the pump speed. Slenid valves Slenid valves switch between different sample streams, calibratin slutins, etc.. They are cntrlled by the sequence prgram in the built-in cmputer.

30 Bran+Luebbe PwerMn Lw-sample and lw-dilutin water detectr (if applicable) Sensrs determine the presence r absence f sample and, if required, dilutin water. These sensrs are ptelectrical elements which detect the presence f liquids within the feeding tubes at a specific time. If an adjustable threshld value is exceeded in a certain time interval, the switch respnds. If the sample runs shrt the system displays a suitable errr message. Lw-reagent detectr (ptin) Optinal up t 5 reagent-lines can be cntrlled. The sensrs wrk like the lwsample detectr. Bttles fr reagents and calibratin slutins These slutins are kept in bttles. By means f extractin pipes they are cnnected with the respective pumps and valves. Optinal a reagent cabinet can be placed belw the PwerMn husing. This cabinet can include up t 6 x 5 L bttles Cntrl sectin The cntrl sectin cntains all cmpnents used fr system cntrl, signal prductin and data handling. The cntrl sectin is lcated at the rear f the pivtable plate and is prtected by an additinal cver. Fig. 3.2 shws the cntrl sectin and its cmpnents withut cver. Danger: This system cntains electrical circuits and cmpnents perating under dangerusly high vltages. Cntact may result in electric shck and severe r fatal injury. The cntrl sectin may nly be pened by a qualified electrician. The system has t be made zer-ptential first.
