2 POSITIVE PRESSURE MANIFOLD MANUAL POSITIVE PRESSURE EXTRACTION OPERATION INSTRION Thery f Operatin 2 The Psitive Pressure Extractin Manifld (PPM) is a mechanical wrkstatin that is used t facilitate the prcess f sample preparatin using slid phase extractin (SPE) cartridges. The PPM utilizes pressurized gas (i.e. cmpressed nitrgen r air) t mve sample slvent thrugh SPE cartridges at a cntrlled rate f flw. The PPM has tw (2) adjustable regulatrs designed with restrictrs t allw a fine (lwer) (Regulated Flw) and a carse (higher) (Dry / Full Flw) adjustment during the extractin prcedure. SHIPPING CONTENTS (1) 4 x 12 psitin Psitive Pressure Manifld (1) Waste cllectin rack, stpcck and tubing (1) Elutin rack (16 mm r 13 mm cllectin tubes) (1) ¾ 4 x 12 psitin Slid Phase Extractin plate (Standard 10 ml/15 ml rack included with each system. See page 10 fr available adaptr plates). ACCESSORIES REQUIRED FOR OPERATION ¼ O.D. plastic rigid tubing rate fr a minimum f 80 t 100 psi. 3 DESCRIPTION OF PPM UNIT & CONTROLS Dimensins f unit: The psitive pressure manifld is wide, 13 deep, and 20 high. The Raise and Lwer switch is used t put the extractin rack int prper psitin during sample preparatin. The pressurized gas will mve the slid black plastic extractin rack up r dwn depending n the switch psitin. 3-Psitin Tggle Switch This switch is used t adjust the flw mechanism t ne f the three (3) desired psitins (Regulated, Off, r Dry/Full). By turning the knb t each psitin, the PPM will allw the rate f flw thrugh the manifld plate as adjusted and shwn n the pressure gauge. Regulated Flw Adjustment This gauge is cnsidered a fine adjustment because it has a restrictr, which will nt allw excessive flw thrugh the manifld plate. The adjustment knb is used t regulate the flw during the extractin prcedure. 3 T adjust, pull the knb ut and turn clckwise t increase and cunterclckwise t decrease the gas flw t the desired rate. Push the knb in t lck the adjustment knb int psitin. By turning the center tggle switch t Regulated Flw the gas will begin t flw at the rate in relatin t the pressure gauge under the adjustment dial. (It is recmmended t use psi gas flw frm the main gas surce t maximize the PPM efficiency. The regulated flw shuld be adjusted t apprximately psi t btain a rate f flw between 1-2 ml/ minute.) 4 POSITIVE PRESSURE MANIFOLD MANUAL Dry/ Full Flw Adjustment This gauge is used t maximize the amunt f gas flw thrugh the PPM and extractin tubes. There is a wider range flw restrictr assciated with this gauge that allws a larger vlume f gas t flw at a higher rate thrugh the PPM. This setting is used during the drying step r when higher flw rates are required fr samples due t sample matrix r prcedure requirements. The adjustment knb is used t regulate the flw during the extractin prcedure. T adjust, pull the knb ut and turn clckwise t increase and cunterclckwise t decrease the gas flw t the desired rate. Push the knb in t lck the adjustment knb int psitin. By turning the center tggle switch t Dry/ Full Flw the gas will begin t flw at the rate in relatin t the pressure gauge under the adjustment dial. 4 Rw Tggle Switches These switches are used t turn On/Off the flw t rws 2-4. The rws 2-4 can be turned On/Off as desired during the extractin prcedure. The switch fr rw 1 is munted n the back f the unit. This allws fr n / ff cntrl fr rw 1. The rws are cunted 1-4 starting frm frnt t back facing the PPM. The rate flw thrugh each rw is determined by the tggle switch set t Regulated, Dry/Full r Off Bartram Rd Bristl, PA USA

5 USING THE MANIFOLD FOR EXTRACTION After cnnecting the ¼ inch gas line t the back f the manifld (quick hse cnnect), adjust the pressure t between psi frm the gas surce. Befre putting n the manifld racks and plates, test the maniflds supprt arms by switching the Raise / Lwer tggle switch. The black supprt arms shuld raise and lwer as the tggle switch is adjusted. There will be a lw hissing sund frm the pneumatic pistn system. The manifld waste rack is fitted with a drain and stpcck / hse assembly t be used t cllect waste during the extractin prcedure.the waste cntainer has tw pin cnnects n the underside that fit int the tw screw tps n the manifld rack. This will ensure the stability f the waste rack when the rack is mved during the extractin prcess. The clumn plate (e.g. ¾ metal plate with 4 x 12 drilled penings) is placed n the tp prtin f the rack. These reversible plates are als pre-drilled t fit nt the tp f either the extractin r cllectin rack with the psitin pins. 5 With the waste cntainer and tp plate in place, psitin the rack n tp f these black supprt arms and easily slide int and ut f the wrking manifld psitin. There are als tw pins n the frnt f the black supprt arms. These pins are psitined s as t nt allw the rack t cme ff the supprt arms during the extractin prcedure. An imprtant pint regarding the manifld rack: There are handles n either side f the extractin / cllectin rack fr gripping the racks fr psitining and remval. These racks will nly fit prperly int the wrking manifld if the handle psitins are frward t the frnt f the manifld. It becmes bvius if it is incrrectly placed n the black supprt arms because the 4 x 12 frit penings n the underside f the chassis will nt align prperly with the extractin clumns Bartram Rd Bristl, PA USA

6 POSITIVE PRESSURE MANIFOLD MANUAL MAINTENANCE OF MANIFOLD The manifld requires regular upkeep t preserve the full functinality f the unit. Daily cleaning f any slvent r spills (as needed) n any f the manifld surfaces is suggested. Use slvents such as Methanl, Water, r Is-prpanl t wash the surface f the manifld. It is recmmended t use water first fllwed by an alchl t help dry the unit. Ensuring clean air (free f il, water, and particulates) is imprtant t the maniflds prper functin. The in line air filter (Part Number VMFPPMRAF) attached t the back f the manifld shuld be mnitred fr cndensatin r ther cntaminatin issues. If the filter lks wrn r filled with water, replacement may be required. The brwn rubber gaskets (VMFPPMGSKBL) n the underside f the manifld are recmmended t be replaced at least tw (2) times a year. (A) 6 (B) T replace these gaskets simply peel back the ld gasket frm the bttm f the manifld. Then cntinue by remving the plastic peel frm the bttm f the gasket and attaching the gasket t the bttm f the frit plate. (A) (B) If any psitin n the manifld becmes clgged it may be necessary t replace the restrictr plate. T replace the restrictr plate, turn the manifld upside dwn and remve the base plate. Peel back the brwn gasket frm the frit plate. Lsen the 12 screws with a Phillips screw driver r pwer drill. Remve the restrictr plate by simply pulling it ff f the manifld. (Nte it may be necessary t use a flat head screw driver t pry up the plate if it is nt separating frm the manifld). Replace the range gasket n the tp f the new restrictr plate. Clean as much f the remaining adhesive with a razr t get a gd seal f the range gasket. It is best t attach this directly t the frit plate befre re-securing it t the manifld. Place the restrictr plate back n the unit by replacing the 12 screws. (D nt ver tighten screws). Replace the brwn rubber gasket n the bttm f the restrictr plate making sure the hles n the gasket line up with the hles n the manifld. If the lift arms are hesitating r nt mving freely, lubricate the pistn inside the back f the unit with either silicne grease, r sme ther type f metal lubricant. If there is significant restricted flw t any f the sample psitins, the plate will be cleaned and re-tested. The pistn s lubricatin will be checked t insure prper peratin. The gaskets will be examined fr wear r fracturing. The individual plates will be inspected fr any lse screws hlding the plates t the bdy f the manifld. Any additinal maintenance r repair beynd the scpe f this agreement will be charged at the discretin f, LLC. RETURN POLICY Our Quality Manager will handle all returns. Befre returning merchandise, please call t btain a return authrizatin number frm the quality manager. We will need t knw the reasn fr the return, date f purchase, purchase rder number and invice number in rder t issue a return authrizatin number. Return merchandise must be received befre a credit can be issued. Returns will nt be accepted after 90 days. A restcking fee f 25% f the price paid, r a minimum f $25.00 (whichever is greater) will be charged n all returns. SAFETY This equipment, when used prperly, is safe. Prper PPE, as determined by yur rganizatin, shuld be wrn at all times while using this equipment. Prper handling techniques fr chemicals and bilgical agents shuld be fllwed at all times. Cmpressed gas r nitrgen is used t perate the equipment. Cmpressed gas r nitrgen tubing shuld be securely fitted and lcked int the equipment t prevent the cmpressed gas r nitrgen tubing frm lsening and ptentially striking the peratr. Cmpressed gasses and equipment shuld be handled under prper ventilatin t prevent xygen displacement r txic atmspheres. Operatrs f this equipment must be aware f the pssible pinch pints.
