1 EOHS Persnal Prtective Equipment Intrductin Purpse In sme wrk envirnments Persnal Prtective Equipment (PPE) must be prvided and used t prtect persnnel against hazards capable f causing injury, illness, r impairment. It is the plicy f UWI Mna t prvide apprpriate PPE t emplyees wh may be subjected t a hazardus envirnmental cnditin. Persnal Prtective Equipment (PPE) shall be selected, cnstructed, used and maintained in accrdance with the requirements cntained in r incrprated by reference in this chapter. Whenever feasible, hazards must be eliminated thrugh engineering r supervisry cntrls, prir t resrting t the use f PPE. Persnal prtective equipment (PPE) is used t prtect an individual frm hazards assciated with his/her wrk tasks r envirnment. Specific types f persnal prtective equipment include prtective clthing, eyewear, respiratry devices, prtective shields, glves, and hearing prtectin. Persnal prtective equipment is nt a substitute fr engineering cntrls such as chemical fume hds and bisafety cabinets, r fr administrative cntrls and gd wrk practices. PPE is used in cnjunctin with these cntrls t prvide safety and maintain health. The EOHS ffice is available t assess areas r tasks t identify hazards, t select r advise n the apprpriate PPE fr identified hazards, and t prvide training in the prper care, maintenance, use, and dispsal f PPE. Definitins Respnsibilities 1. Respnsibilities Regarding Persnal Prtective Equipment 1.1 The University thrugh faculty and supervisrs is respnsible fr: Selecting PPE that fits each affected faculty, staff and student; Supplying PPE during the executin f jb duties and experimentatin that have been pre-determined t have ptential hazards; Assuring the adequacy f any emplyee-wned PPE; Prviding training t each PPE user n hazards and required PPE. 1.2 The EOHS ffice is respnsible fr: Assessing wrk areas t identify hazards which necessitate the use f PPE Maintaining recrds f all hazard assessments Assisting in training n the prper use, care, and maintenance f apprved PPE EOHS01-011: Persnal Prtective Equipment Page 1 f 10

2 Prviding guidance n the selectin f PPE Evaluating the verall effectiveness f the PPE 1.3 Supervisrs are directly respnsible fr: Ensuring that the affected faculty, staff and students wrking in their respective areas receive the apprpriate PPE; Ensuring that the affected faculty, staff and students wrking in their respective areas receive apprpriate training fr the use, care, and maintenance f PPE; Ensuring that the affected faculty, staff and students wrking in their respective areas use PPE prperly during their activities; Seeking assistance frm EOHS t evaluate and identify wrkplace hazards and t select apprpriate PPE; Ntifying EOHS when new hazards are intrduced int wrk areas r when hazardus prcesses are added r altered; Ensuring defective r damaged PPE is immediately replaced r repaired. 1.4 PPE users are respnsible fr: Attending training fr the prper use f PPE; Maintaining PPE in a sanitary and reliable cnditin; Using PPE prperly; Infrming their supervisr r advisr f the need t re-evaluate PPE. Prcedures 2. Care and Maintenance f PPE PPE must nt be shared between users unless it has been prperly sanitized. It is als imprtant t ensure that used r cntaminated PPE that cannt be prperly decntaminated is dispsed accrding t University waste dispsal prcedures. Dispsable r single use PPE must never be re-used withut apprval f EOHS. 3. Hand Prtectin Faculty, staff and students are required t use apprpriate hand prtectin when their hands are expsed t hazards, such as: skin absrptin frm harmful substances; cuts, laceratins r abrasins; chemical expsure; thermal burns and/r temperature extremes ptentially infectius material. 3 3.1 The selectin f apprpriate hand prtectin shuld be based n the characteristics f the glves relative t the task being perfrmed, the cnditins present, the duratin f use, and the identified ptential hazards General Purpse Wrk Glves: Leather r fabric glves used t reduce the effects f using tls ver extended perids f time (generally nt suitable fr prtectin frm liquids r chemicals) High temperature glves: Leather glves with heat reflective aluminized cating, wl lining, heat resistant acetate lining in cuff; Lw temperature r refrigeratr glves: Leather glves with, insulated wl lining and knit wrist; Cut/Puncture/Abrasin Resistant Glves: high strength synthetic fibers Chemical Resistant Glves Neprene glves prtect against acids, caustics, ils, greases, mst slvents; Vinyl cated glves prvide abrasin resistance and prtectin against slvents, ammnia, alchls, and mst rganic acids. Ideal fr petrchemical peratins; Butyl glves prvide permeatin resistance t mst gas r water vaprs and are ideal fr prtectin against aldehydes, ketnes, esters. They prvide greater prtectin than neprene, nitrile, and natural rubber fr certain classes f chemicals Latex rubber glves prvide liquid resistance fr fd handling and labratry wrk, and prtectin frm expsure t ptentially infectius material; Nitrile glves prvide prtectin against a wide range f chemicals including armatic, petrleum and chlrinated slvents, and ffers liquid barrier prtectin fr ptentially infectius materials. These are ideal fr faculty, staff and students with a dcumented sensitivity t latex. 3.2 Care and Use f Hand Prtectin T preserve the useful life f glves, wash chemicals r materials frm reusable glves after each use; Stre glves away frm the cntaminating area r hazard t reduce deteriratin; Prperly discard dispsable r cmprmised glves; EOHS01-011: Persnal Prtective Equipment Page 3 f 10

4 3.2.4 Check glves prir t dnning and peridically fr signs f wear r deteriratin, and replace as necessary; 4. Bdy Prtectin Certain activities require prtective apparel t minimize the ptential fr expsure t skin. This sectin is intended t prvide faculty, staff and students with general guidelines fr identifying activities that require prtective apparel and selecting apprpriate bdy prtectin fr the assciated hazards. 4.1 Chemical Resistant Clthing: Prtective apparel designed t prvide a barrier against a variety f chemical hazards. Chemical resistive clthing may be required fr tasks where chemical splashing is anticipated r large vlume transfers are cnducted. Prir t selectin f chemical resistant clthing, EOHS shuld be cnsulted; 4.2 Labratry Apparel and Scrub Suits: A wide variety f styles and materials are available t prtect emplyees during labratry peratins. The selected type f lab cat r ther apparel is designed t prtect the wearer against accidental splashes r day-t-day handling f chemicals; 4.3 Cleanrm Apparel: Cleanrm apparel is designed and classified t meet OSHA requirements fr the cntrl f airbrne particles Care and Use f Bdy Prtectin: Bdy prtectin is specifically designed and designated as reusable r dispsable When using dispsable apparel, a new garment shuld be used fr each peratin, and the used garment shuld be prperly discarded after each use When utilizing reusable prtective apparel, it is imprtant t fllw the manufacturer s cleaning instructins. Imprper cleaning may cmprmise the integrity f the garment and reduce it s capability fr bdy prtectin r prtectin f clean rm envirnments. 5. Ear and Hearing Prtectin Ear plugs and muffs are available fr any emplyee ptentially expsed t nise levels at r abve 85 dba 6. Eye and Face Prtectin Apprved eye prtectin must be wrn by all University faculty, staff, students, and visitrs that engage in hazardus activities r are expsed t identified eye hazards within University buildings r n University prperty. Prtective eye wear des nt prvide unlimited prtectin and is nt intended as a substitute fr engineering cntrls, such as equipment shields, and peratinal cntrls. 5 6.1 University faculty, staff and students that wear prescriptin eyeglasses while engaged in peratins that invlve eye hazards must wear prtective eye wear that incrprates the prescriptin lens in the design r fits prperly ver the prescriptin eyeglasses; 6.2 Wearers f cntact lenses must wear apprpriate eye and face prtectin devices in hazardus envirnments. 6.3 Safety gggles and/r a face shield must be used when there is a significant hazard frm chemical splashes r frm prjectile hazards such as fragments, chips, r flying particles; 6.4 Equipment fitted with apprpriate filter lenses must be used t prtect against light radiatin. Filter lenses must have a shade number that is apprpriate fr the wrk being perfrmed. See the Laser Safety sectin f this manual fr mre infrmatin. 6.5 All prtective eye and face equipment must cmply with ANSI Z , American Natinal Standard fr Occupatinal and Educatinal Eye and Face Prtectin; 6.6 Care and Use f Eye and Face Prtectin Clean eyewear after each shift r wrk activity. Use antifgging agents t reduce r eliminate fgging Replace scratched r damaged eyewear Thrughly disinfect eyewear that was used by ther emplyees with warm water and sap r a recmmended disinfectant Stre eyewear in a bag, drawer r prtective case t prevent scratching, damage r cntaminatin; EOHS01-011: Persnal Prtective Equipment Page 5 f 10
