Graffiti remval can be hazardus due t the wrk situatin (wrking at heights, in clse prximity t rads) and the equipment used (high pressure water, chemicals). This SWMS des nt cver hazardus chemicals, hazardus manual tasks, traffic management, wrking at heights r nise cntrl in sufficient detail. Dedicated SWMS shuld be develped fr these tasks, and fr any risks nt cvered in this SWMS. Persnal Prtective Equipment (PPE) Ensure all PPE meets relevant Australian Standards. Inspect, and replace PPE as needed. Ft Prtectin AS Safety signs fr the ccupatinal envirnment reprduced with permissin frm SAI Glbal under licence 1210-c062. Standards may be purchased at Hearing Prtectin High Visibility Eye Prtectin Face Prtectin Hand Prtectin Prtective Clthing Breathing Prtectin Sun Prtectin Brad brimmed hat, UV rated clthing, SPF 30+ sunscreen, tinted safety glasses with adequate UV prtectin) Rings, watches, jewellery that may becme entangled in machines must nt be wrn. Lng and lse hair must be tied back. Safety ftwear, hearing prtectin, high visibility shirt r vest, eye prtectin (gggles), face prtectin, hand prtectin (chemical resistant glves), lng sleeves/pants/water prf gear, breathing prtectin (respiratrs as required). Dangerus Gds / Hazardus Chemicals Expsure t graffiti remval chemicals may cause respiratry damage, asthma, and skin and eye damage. Selleys Ferrpr Muck-ff Graffiti Remver: Nt classified as Dangerus Gds by the criteria f the Australian Dangerus Gds Cde (ADG Cde) fr transprt by Rad and Rail; NON- DANGEROUS GOODS. This material is hazardus accrding t Safe Wrk Australia; HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCE. Classified as a C1 (COMBUSTIBLE LIQUID) fr the purpse f strage and handling, in accrdance with the requirements f relevant Australian Standard. Refer t State Regulatins fr strage and transprt requirements. This material is a Scheduled Pisn S6 and must be stred, maintained and used in accrdance with the relevant regulatins. There are five basic types f chemical graffiti remvers, which cme in a variety f frms including gels, creams, and liquids: Slvents cntaining chlrinated hydrcarbns; slvents cntaining mnglycl ethers and glycl acetates; slvents cntaining diglycl ethers; slvents cntaining plar slvents; slvents cntaining miscellaneus slvents. When using any chemical remver, keep in mind wh will be using the prduct, the safety precautins t fllw, and any training required fr the prduct user. Obtain a safety data sheet (SDS) frm the distributr f any hazardus chemical. The SDS will shw chemical make-up and any health and safety risks assciated with use. Fur additinal factrs shuld be cnsidered prir t purchase f a prduct:
3 Page 3 f Specialised equipment; When wrking with varius chemical slvents, skin and eye prtectin is necessary. Safety gggles, rubber glves, and prtective clthing shuld always be wrn. Adequate ventilatin is required when using many chemicals. If adequate ventilatin cannt be prvided, wear a Natinal Institute f Occupatinal Safety and Health (NIOSH) apprved respiratr. Chemical remvers have the ptential t pse dangerus safety risks fr wrkers. 2. Envirnmental cnsideratins; VOC (vlatile rganic cmpund) refers t the level f fumes emitted int the air. When wrking with chemical remvers, VOC s shuld be kept as lw as pssible, and, f curse, prper clean-up and dispsal is critical. The ptential fr damaging envirnmental impacts is high when using and dispsing f chemicals. 3. Emplyee r peratrs health risk as recrded n SDS sheet; When wrking with untrained vlunteers, it is recmmended that yu use nthing mre than a "Health (2) rating Flammable (2) rating" as indicated n the SDS sheet. This is the Natinal Fire Prtectin Assciatin hazard rating system fr indicating health, flammability, reactivity, and special hazards fr cmmn chemicals. The end user t fllw the safety precautins as written n the SDS sheet. Prducts that tend t be safer will wrk mre slwly. They may als require agitatin r multiple applicatins depending n the surface and type f graffiti being cleaned alng with the prsity f the substrate. 4. Accessibility t the wall r surface; Walls lcated in precarius places, that are difficult t get t, r are enclsed increase the ptential dangers f wrking with chemical remvers. In such circumstances, these prducts shuld nt be cnsidered. Envirnmental Risk, Graffiti remval chemical: Envirnmental risks may include damage t waterways and water catchment areas due t incrrect dispsal f, r frm run-ff f hazardus chemicals during spills r clean up. Avid cntaminating waterways. Hazards - What can cause harm? Risks - What can happen?
