The new slate of officers have been installed. (see article on page 2) The Board of Directors has approved three transfers of new members into our club. Jack and Gloria Smith are transferring from Everett and Anne Ashford from Northgate/Lake City. Car seats have been delivered to Stevens Hospital. Lynnwood High Key Club is off to a great start with Billie Swengel as advisor and Mountlake Terrace High now has a Key Club almost ready to submit their charter with Tania Cook as the advisor. We participated in a special celebration for Monroe's 80th anniversary and installation of officers for all five Division 22 clubs. We held a special Admin fundraising event, a Mardi Gras Murder Mystery progressive dinner hosted by Cindy and Mel Barber, Larry and Ginger Merwin and Nancy and Barry Keating. (see article on page 3) We have had a couple of outstanding programs brought to us by program chair, Buz Eddy. Dave Golden principal at Lynnwood High talked with us about the new school being built and the moving plans for Lynnwood High. (to Bothell??) Lynnwood Mayor, Don Gough spoke to us about recent community participation in strategic planning for our community. Planned upcoming events include our annual food drive to be held Saturday, November 8 and Saturday, November 15 and the Special Olympics bowling is set for November 9 at Brunswick Lanes. The Auction Committee chaired this year by Billie Swengel has begun holding planning meetings for the big event set for May 2, Plans are also being proposed to the Board to hold a craft event at the Lynnwood Lights event to be held at the Lynnwood Convention Center on December 4. An artificial Christmas tree to would be provided by us and decorated and donated to a nursing home or similar community location. As you can see we are busy and we have great need for the support of all of our membership at the many events planned and at the weekly meetings of our club. We are off to an amazing start and looking to have a great year ahead. Plan to support and participate as best you can. The rewards are great. As Sir Winston Churchill said "We make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we give."

2 Monroe Celebrates 80 Years of Service and Division 22 Installs Club Officers and Board On Friday, October 17 ten members of Lynnwood Kiwanis and seven family members attended the grand celebration of Monroe Kiwanis 80th anniversary and the installation of the officers and board members of the five clubs in Division 22. Those who set aside the time to attend and support our incoming officers were rewarded with a wonderful evening. Kiwanis International Vice President Sylvester Neal and Immediate Past Governor Rich Jensen each addressed the crowd of over 100. Monroe Kiwanis had five new members installed by Sylvester. Sadly, George Stocker, long time member of Monroe Kiwanis and the main planner behind the event, was at home recovering from a serious stomach bacterial infection but the event was recorded so he could see it. Our own 56 year member of Kiwanis, Jay Rust, had a fall and was in some pain and also unable to attend. As Division 22 Lt. Governor, I had the honor of installing the officers and board members. It was somewhat confusing with five clubs at once but seemed to go well. Congratulations to Lynnwood's new leadership team: President Tania Cook, VP Bill Temple, Secretary Billie Swengel and Treasurer Dave Dubois. All in all it was a nice evening of celebration and fellowship with Kiwanis friends from all five clubs plus several visitors from Division 21 as well. 3 3 I Mardi Gras Mystery - Admin Fundraiser On Friday, October 24 a fun group of Lynnwood Kiwanians and spouses and family gathered for a special event to benefit the Lynnwood Kiwanis Administration Fund. Decked out in special character costumes and wearing Mardi Gras beads and/or masks, the group began their evening at the home of Cindy and Mel Barber. Along with a great variety of delicious appetizers, the group began a Mardi Gras Murder Mystery event. After the initial introduction of the eight main characters the first chapter of the mystery unfolded. The next stop was at the home of Ginger and Larry Merwin for the main course. Larry pulled out all his favorite New Orleans decorations and music and Ginger took a vacation day from work and spent it all preparing a dinner of jambalaya and gumbo and cornbread and fruit punch. Another couple of chapters were disclosed and some clues shared regarding a murder at Chateau DuPre. Soon it was time to move on to the dessert course with a variety of delicious treats provided by Nancy and Barry Keating. The final chapters and clues were covered and the group tried hard to determine the guilty party. As one might expect, the lawyer did it. In this case the lawyer was none other than immediate past president Dave Dubois (J. Stephen Peek). It was a wonderful evening of fellowship, food and some very talented characters getting into their roles and having lots of fun. Just look at what happens when our club sends three of its young ladies off to Tri Cities as convention delegates. They stayed awake most of one night planning and scheming events for the year ahead. Thank you Tania for putting this night together and thanks to all the hosts and hostesses, actors and supporting actors. I am sure if you ask any of the eighteen in attendance they will tell you it was a wonderful evening. New members Jack and Gloria Smith were in attendance and Gloria thinks it is just great that they have joined a club that has so much fun. Tania says she has plans for a quarterly Kiwanis Social Event so be looking for the next one and plan to help support our Admin Fund and have a good time as well.

4 The students at Mountlake Terrace High have elected their officers and planned the first couple of service projects. They will be pairing up with another school group to collect food at Albertsons in Mountlake Terrace and later they will be collecting funds for the Heifer Project. They are close to submitting their paperwork for chartering as a new Key Club. The MLTHS Key Club meets the second and fourth Wednesday of the month. Lynnwood High Key Club has started off their year and has service project plans as well. They will be assisting Lynnwood Kiwanis at our annual food drive November 8 and 15. 5 Hello all! Welcome to the new Kiwanis year! I'd like to thank everyone for a great first month tv we're off to a great start with a wonderful Installation Banquet and Fall Social. Both events were well-attended and LOTSof fun! We've had some great programs at our meetings, and our club has grown by 3! WELCOMEto Jack and Gloria Smith and Anne Ashford, we're happy to have you! Some of my goals for this year: 1. That everyone would find their "nitch", whether it be through existing projects or new ideas for service. I would love to hear some new ideas! My goal is to increase our hands-on service opportunities. It's great to give money to worthy organizations, but it's the physical doing of a project that gets our hearts involved. A side benefit is that being out in the community doing things gives us more visibility, which equates to more club growth! 2. That brings me to my second goal: club growth! Not just growth for the sake of growth, but so that we can provide more service. New members mean new ideas, and more hands to do the work of Kiwanis. 3. And last but not least, I hope to provide more opportunities for fellowship for our club members. The Murder Mystery Party on Oct. 24 was a fabulous start! THANK YOU to our wonderful hosts: Cindy and Mel Barber, Ginger and Larry Merwin, and Nancy and Barry Keating. They provided delicious food in their beautiful homes, and a great time was had by all! My hope is that we will have a fellowship opportunity of some sort quarterly. Please let me know if you have any ideas, and if you're willing to host! I hope that you are all as excited about the upcoming year as I am! If you are one of our members who isn't able to attend meetings regularly due to work schedules, please, join us when you can, and be sure to jump in on projects and events! Your ideas and input are very valuable and we'd love to see you whenever we can. For those who are able to come regularly, give some thought to filling a need...
