1 CONNECTICUT SKI COUNCIL skiclub.com December, 2017 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE COUNCIL MEETING: WELCOME SKI SEASON 2017/2018!!! We ushered in the season with a spectacularly successful Snowball on November 18 th! The Marriott has done a beautiful job on their facelift, and they were wonderful hosts for the CSC members lucky enough to attend. Council Ambassador Joy Dutra and our Vice President Marsha Baretta co-chaired a great evening with the help of Art Dutra (program), Dave Zuraw (raffle), THE SUPER VOLUNTEERS from the 16 clubs that had roles in providing decorations, security, raffle prizes and ticket sales, and Outstanding Member awards. A special and heartfelt Thank You to Bob and Kristine Kaczmarczyk for hosting the 11 club Ambassadors who competed to represent the Council for the coming year. All are winners and proud members of their clubs. Thank you to our judges that day: Jay Dougherty, General Manager of Mt. Southington; Courtney Zeiler, reporter at Channel 3; and Kim Meeker, Group Sales Manager of Mt. Snow. Thank you for giving us the day! Melissa Patterson from the New Haven Ski Club was chosen to be the CSC Ambassador for the coming year. Congratulations Melissa! We also had the opportunity to recognize Outstanding Members of 14 clubs who were offered recognition for the service that they have performed for their clubs over the past year. Having recognized all of the hard work done by these wonderful people, over 550 Council members danced the night away to the music of one of the most storied bands in the Northeast Eight to the Bar. The dance floor was packed from beginning to end, and several of the clubs had food and music in their hospitality rooms as well (work is that some were partying until 3 in the morning.) COMMITTEE REPORTS: SKI VOUCHERS Nancy Nolan (Southern tier) and Cheryl Parmalee and Mark Robitaille (Northern tier) performed a GREAT JOB!! In taking orders for pre-season ski tickets and getting the right tickets to the right clubs. They processed over $1,000,000 in ticket sales! AWARENESS DAYS John Filakovsky has worked diligently to complete the Awareness days schedule, and has replaced the Awareness Days left vacant by Stowe deciding not to support our Council with affordable skiing. Please support the mountains that care enough about keeping skiing affordable. CSC SNOWBALL Please see above! NATIONAL SKI COUNCIL FEDERATION Ben Tomszak reported on his trip to the NSCF meeting at our Nov. 14 Council business meeting. He came away from the trip to Sun Peaks, British Columbia, with a number of worthy ideas for our Council s consideration. His talk sparked a very spirited discussion about attracting and holding new members to out clubs. Based on that discussion, he will be forming a committee to put these ideas into action for the benefit of our member clubs. We look forward to hearing from this committee in the coming months. MONDAY NIGHT RACING Rob Dexter announced that the kick-off pizza party and registration night will be held at Mt. Southington on Monday, Dec. 18. There will be NO RACING that night, so come out, have some pizza, register, and be ready for the competition! Because of the way the holidays fall this year, the first night of real competition will be Jan. 8, DEC 12, 2017 NOTE LOCATION: The Back 9 at the Stanley Golf Course formerly the Whinstone Tavern) Following meeting: Jan. 9, 2018 Newsletter Deadline The next newsletter will be for January deadline is DEC. 17. I should have Mt. Sunapee bulk tickets soon, and will have them available to pick up at the December Council meeting. Please be sure your club sends a rep to pick them up. Not all mountains are open yet but are expected to do so by the beginning of December. Check their websites and ours for updates. Get your ski gear ready and have a great season! Questions?? 2 President s Message, continued KIDS DAY the Kids Day committee will meet to finalize plans for the kids learn to ski day at Mt. Southington. Jay Dougherty, General Manager at Mt Southington, has agreed to the event taking place on Sunday, Jan 28, Details to follow. ON SNOW WEEKEND As you probably know by now, we will be hosted by Okemo on March 2, 3 and 4, As mentioned at the beginning, the Snowball, as great as it was, was attended by only 16 clubs. It would be fantastic to have that number double for On Snow weekend. We will post more information on the website shortly, including lodging options. You do not have to race to have a great 3-ay Vermont On Snow weekend (CAST proved that at Loon)! CSC WEBSITE - MAKE SURE YOU TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE CSC WEBSITE TO POST YOUR CLUB TRIPS AND EVENTS! If you are trying to get out information about your club activities, such as ski trips, to our 30,000 Council members, and you have not posted it on the CSC website, you are not taking advantage of the single greatest marketing tool available to you. Bill Leuze will post your information just ask! REMEMBER the Council website has links to your club website, and your club s website should have a link to the Council s site. Also make sure your membership goes to the website regularly a lot of really good stuff on how to make your season bright! I wish you all a warm and fun-filled Thanksgiving, and look forward to seeing you at The BACK NINE at STANLEY GOLF COURSE at 7:30 pm on DECEMBER 12!! Jonathan PSIA Don Haringa, Dir. Thank you to everyone who came out to the 2017 Snowball on Nov. 18, 2017! Over 500 f you were present as we awarded over 220 prizes through Ambassador gifts, grand raffle prizes, door prize and the general raffle! You brought in almost $7000in raffle ticket sales, which is great! Those sales will help to sponsor our events through the year, including the Kids Instruction Day. Congratulations and good luck to our new CSC Ambassador, Melissa Patterson Meadders from New Haven Ski Club! Joy Dutra did a fabulous job of inspiring future Ambassadors and learning how to manage a big party for 500 of you! The team of Snowball committee volunteers worked diligently throughout the evening and the solicitation and the raffle committee folks did an incredible job! A huge thank you to Kim McLaughlin of Manchester and Annette Murphy of North Haven for storing and organizing the raffle gifts prior to the event, as well as bringing a team of volunteers from their clubs to distribute the prizes at the Ball! A very special thanks to our solicitors Robert Kot from New Britain Falcons, and Stephanie Evers from River Hills. Their diligence paid off as they solicited 55 prizes from ski related vendors in and out of our state, in addition to maintaining thorough and accurate records of all the donated prizes 222 in all! A huge debt of gratitude to Stephanie, especially as she fine-tune and resorted the database leading up to the Snowball (sometimes working a 24 hour day.) Then at the stroke of 10:00 pm she was the sole person to correlate the drawn raffle ticket numbers into the database of prizes. Incredible tenacity and diligence. Volunteers from other clubs include Torrington and Grumman, as they sold raffle tickets throughout the night. Norwich came on board to pre-rip tickets, and other members of Danbury, River Hills and New Britain Falcons did their share in the raffle room counting ticket sales returns and ripping tickets. What a great team! Special thanks also to Dave Zuraw who carried the torch for me while I was recuperating from shoulder surgery, and heading the raffle group during September and October. He uploaded the winning raffle ticket numbers onto the PowerPoint, and how about our Bill Leuze making use of technology and linking the winning numbers/gifts to our own CSC website! It is said that many hands make light work, and so many of you made it that much more enjoyable and rewarding for everyone! Great job all of you! Here s to 2018 with our new Ambassador, Melissa Patterson Meadders from New Haven! Marsha M. Baretta CSC Vice President
