Cairns Photographic Society Inc..P.O.Box 5028 Cairns. Qld N e w s l e t t e r April 2007 April Meeting CRG Exhibition A great presentation by Rachel Whymark on Photography Techniques, which will hopefully inspire you with your entry for the Cairns Regional Gallery Exhibition in November. Plans are in place to have some of those great tips on our website. Rob Harris was our guest judge for the evening, one of several who have agreed to judge our monthly competition during the year. This will give members a diverse range in judges and their preferences, and as always provide a great learning tool. If you have never entered our competition before this, it is a good way to learn about photography. The competition running now ends in June, so there are a few months to prepare for next year s competition that runs from July 2007 to June Members voted to have the weekend outing in August to Undara, there will be more information given out regarding choices of accommodation etc at a later date. This will be on the 18th and 19th August which could possibly be a little cool!! The first selection of photos for the Cairns Regional Gallery Exhibition will take place at our August meeting, so this is just another reminder to put your creative thoughts together. As everyone should appreciate, photos that are to be hung in the gallery are to be the best and it will also be an opportunity to sell your entry. Members of CPS in previous years tried very hard to have an exhibition at the Gallery, without success, and now the Gallery has invited us to be there, so please give your support with your photo of Faded Glory. Our Book - Our Backyard Our application for funding from RADF has been submitted and received favourable comment, so now we have to wait to see if we are successful. If we are successful the time constraints will be tight if the book is to be launched at the Gallery. We have to allow 9 weeks for printing so photos have to be selected, prepared and handed to the printers by the 31st August. We would like to see all of our members have a go providing photos that show, as our submission says, Cairns lifestyle, culture and geographic location and also shows that Cairns has the best backyard in Australia.
Page 2 Outings PSQ Convention April outing is this coming Sunday to the Birds of Prey at Atherton. It is next to the Chinese temple just out of town on the Herberton road. Entry is $10 for members so please have your membership card with you. The show starts at 2pm and we will be meeting outside at May outing on the 20th is to Cairns Wildlife Safari Reserve at Kuranda. Admission for members is $22.50 and again you must have your membership card. It has been recommended that we be there for the opening, as the Hippos are fed first and that will be the only opportunity to photograph them, as they disappear into the water for the rest of the day. The zoo opens at 9am. Details of our June outing to Innisfail will be discussed at our next meeting. Just received this from John Edwards of PSQ regarding their upcoming convention. This is the first we have heard about it, as there has been no communication from PSQ since the middle of last year. Very sorry for the delay but we hope it means you are even more excited about joining us at the Kindilan Conference Centre at Redland Bay ( just around the corner from the Sirromet Winery - Mt Cotton) over the Queens Birthday Long Weekend in June If we are able to find out more information about it, we will let you know. (Have just heard they will be sending out registration forms this week) New Member Welcome to Fiona Middleton, we hope you enjoy being part of the Cairns Photographic Society family. Supporters of Cairns Photographic Society Inc Battery World 297 Mulgrave Road Cairns Ph Join us at our monthly meetings on the first Tuesday of every month, Cominos House, 27 Greenslopes St., Edge Hill from 7.00pm. Visitors are always welcome. Secretary: Rachel Whymark Newsletter Editor: Dell Deed delld1@bigpond.com

Page 4 Paronella Park Outing Last Year This Year A great recovery from Cyclone Larry, it is amazing how quickly the rainforest regenerates and what a great job Mark & Judy Evans have done with Paronella s restoration. All of the walkways are now re-opened and they have added the Indigenous experience that Joan Leach, Ellen Baynard, Robyn Chellingworth and myself enjoyed. After this I promise I wont sound like a broken record that keeps saying not many members turned up, but those that did, enjoyed the outing and of course the weather was fine!!! No rain! even though it was raining in Cairns when we left. The Mena Creek Falls were flowing very fast and furious, so fast in fact they had knocked out the connection to the fountain, so there was no water flowing to it. But the fast flowing waterfall didn t deter our mermaid, Jeannette McInnes who enjoyed her snorkelling in the creek. That s her feet circled, as they disappear into the water. I believe that the Eels were a bit nippier this time. No one wanted to stay for the night shoot so we all returned home late afternoon. The waterfalls are now lit at night and I know that a few members will be returning for those photos..
Page 5 Paronella Park - cont. These photos are courtesy of our new member, Hans Schmidt who has said he and his family had a very enjoyable day out to Paronella Park. And this one is from Ellen Baynard, who caught Robyn Chellingworth and myself photographing at the waterfall. Thank you again to those who came along.

Page 8 Cairns Show Plans are in progress for the Show, to be held on the 18th, 19th and 20th July. The Show Society has a new manager this year and a new computer system, which will make life a lot easier for checking in the entries and recording the judging results Cairns Photographic Society are the stewards again, with Joan Leach and Ray Gibson being Chief Stewards, We are looking for volunteers to help out during the show but also on the Saturday before, after all the entries have been accepted they have to be put up on the wall, ready for judging on the Sunday. If you can help, please contact Joan on or Ray on , We need to know as soon as possible, so that passes can be organised. There was a piece in our newsletter in August last year that told the story of what happens at the show, so you can check our website out to read it, but this was part of it:- Once all the entries are in, they have to be put up on the wall. With over 200 entries, that means there are over 800 large thumb tacks that have to be pushed into the wall to hold the photos up. So if you think that results in a very sore thumb, then be assured, it does. Club Competition Rules Entry fee of $1 per member for up to three (3) photos. All photos must have been taken within the last twelve (12) months. Photos entered in the 2006 competition MUST NOT have been exhibited during the year 2007 and financial members only are eligible to enter. Up to three photos per member can be submitted, the size is 5 x 7 or 5 x 8 - no smaller and no larger, not matted. not manipulated and also no white borders Digital photos can be enhanced only as much as film photos can Your name must be on a separate piece of paper and attached to the back of the photo NOT written on the photo. Unidentified photos will not be entitled to judging Please take note of these rules as the judges will disqualify photos that do not comply with them Junior Division Photos can be any subject and the size is 6x4. Entry is 50c for up to 3 photos. Name and information to be attached to back of photo. Up ladders, down ladders, sitting on the floor, trying to work out how they will all fit in the space that is available. So if you can help, it would be appreciated, especially on the Saturday, if we can have six sets of sore thumbs on the Saturday, instead of two, that would be great!!!
