Imported product has gained distribution and imported Bartlett were in about 20% of retailers visited. Sizing ranges from count with retail prices the same or slightly higher than Northwest pears. Northwest pears remain the pear of choice with retailers both in advertising and space allocation. Quality continues to be good. The Pear Bureau has been contacting retailers and wholesalers reminding them of additional sales opportunities on all remaining varieties. Special emphasis on Red Anjou and Bosc is continuing to be discussed. "Mix and Match" ads and secondary displays to help generate extra sales to the category are a part of those discussions. "Share a pear" with an apple ad is also helping to keep pears active both in advertising and increased space allocation. Summer related items especially stone fruit, grapes and strawberries remain the top sales promotional items this period. Page 2

4 North Central and Canada Retailers (cont d.) Green Anjou and Bosc have been advertised regularly the last few weeks. Retails of.99 pound have been more prevalent on recorded ads in the US. Some discount banners in Eastern Canada have also been aggressive in advertising Green Anjou and Bosc. However, overall everyday retails remain high especially in Canada. Everyday retails are $ pound depending on locations across Canada. Space Allocation and location have been good overall but we are emphasizing this on all calls. These elements are so important for pears and getting those impulse sales going into the next few months. Cross merchandising options are also being addressed whenever possible. Updated crop information and availability is discussed on all calls. Season long and layered promotions are being reviewed to maximize funds for every promotion on pears. Top accounts are being targeted to help push and promote over the next few months. With the Pear Bureau "Display Challenge" promotion ending March 31st, all accounts and independent wholesalers are encouraged to have end of the month promotions and remind stores to send in display photos. The goal is to get additional displays and space allocation. Overall quality of Northwest pears is good. Some scald is showing up on Green Anjou as they ripen. Bosc ripen fast but quality is good. Red Anjou show some occasional scarring, some are dull maroon in color with a chalky look. Eating quality on all varieties is very good. Giant Eagle Pittsburg Colemans Markets Newfoundland Page 4
