2 Welcome to the SATA AIRLINES AZORES PRO 2013 AZORES PRO TRAVEL INFORMATION This document will provide you with a variety of information regarding the event, including dates, location, accommodation, transportation, local amenities and event contact details. Event Ratings and dates ASP Men s Prime Event [3 rd to 8 th September 2013] [USD 250,000 prize money] Event location The Azores Islands Pro will be staged at Ribeira Grande on São Miguel s north shore, the largest of nine islands that compose the Azores archipelago (Portugal). São Miguel, known as "the green island", is the largest and most populated island of the Azores as well as the home to the Presidency of the Autonomous Region of the Azores. It has a surface area of approximately 293 square miles (759 km2) with a population of inhabitants (aprox.). The Ponta Delgada Airport is located about 2 km from the city center. Surfing & Weather info Summer season: the north shore of São Miguel it s the most consistent all year round, with summer swells averaging 3/5 feet, reaching up to 15 feet during the winter season. Under the influence of the Gulf Stream, a warm water current that heads north east from the Gulf of Mexico, the Azores enjoy a mild temperate climate throughout the year. During the summer you can expect lovely warm sunny days with average outside temperatures of between 15 and 26 C, and mild water temperatures from 20º to 24º C. Being so far out in the Atlantic, the islands are prone to rainy days at any time of year, and without these showers of course, you could not enjoy the beautiful flora on the islands. 3 Getting there By plane only The Azores International airline, SATA INTERNATIONAL, is the official Azores Islands Pro airline. It operates direct non stop flights to the Azores Islands from Lisbon and Oporto in mainland Portugal. The approximate flight time to Ponta Delgada is about 2 hours. Azores main airports are: Ponta Delgada (PDL) in São Miguel; Terceira (TER) and Horta (HOR). A special air fare, from Lisbon to Ponta Delgada is available for reservations trough Takeoff Surf Travel, where you can choose your travel arrangements from flights only to a full travel package, combining flights, accommodation and car rental. August is main tourist season and planes get sold out easy. Important notice: there are daily flights available from Boston - USA to Ponta Delgada - Azores (Sao Miguel Island) with SATA International. Surfers coming from the US Open can fly from LA to Boston and then get this direct 4 hour flight to São Miguel Island (Ponta Delgada). Reservations available trough Takeoff Surf travel. There is also public transportation available as well as a reliable taxi service.
