CODE OF CONDUCT Parents have an important role in the delivery and support of sporting activities for all children. With it comes a clear responsibility to act in a constructive and encouraging manner at all times. As part of this responsibility the following Codes of Behaviour have been adopted by the Yamba SLSC Junior Activities Group (Nippers): Parents, Caregivers & Spectators Code of Behaviour Children participate in sport for their own enjoyment and development, not yours. Encourage children to participate, do not force them. Focus on the child s efforts and performance rather than winning or losing. Encourage children to always play by the rules. Remember children learn best by example. Appreciate good performances and skillful plays by all participants, working to promote good sportsmanship. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from sporting activities. Respect officials, age managers and coaches decisions and teach children to do likewise. Show appreciation for age managers, administrators, coaches and officials. Without them, your child could not participate. Respect the rights, dignity and worth of others. Nipper s Code of Behaviour Participate for your own enjoyment and benefit, not just to please parents and coaches. Respect our Club house and the equipment you use, wash it and return it after use. Report any damage. Treat all participants as you would like to be treated. Do not bully, put other people down or throw sand. Co-operate with your age managers, water safety officers, team mates, coaches, officials and opponents. Without them there would be no nippers. Wear your nipper cap at all times during nippers and pink singlets for water activities. Be a good sport. Applaud all performances, encourage others and follow the rules. By joining the Yamba SLSC Junior Activities each Nipper, Parent or Caregiver acknowledges and accepts these Codes of Conduct. Photography Photos are taken each week at nippers by our Publicity Officer and used on Facebook, in the newspaper, in our newsletters and other promotional information. If you do not wish your child to be photographed, you must notify the Junior Activities Coordinator in writing. 3

NIPPER CO-ORDINATOR S MESSAGE Hi everyone and welcome back to a brand new Nippers season! I am sure you are all excited to get back into learning new skills, being part of a team, meeting new friends and for parents, volunteering on the BBQ, his season we will be showcasing the nippers lifesaving skills with Yamba Nippers Lifesaving Extravaganza being held at the end of the season. doing a course or the surf swim. There is always something for everyone. Nippers is also different from most other sports because it involves the parents as much as the children! To Now for a little about me, for those that don t know, I first joined the club in the run our weekly Nippers we must have Age Managers, Age Manager Assistants, Water Safety Personnel, 2004/5 season as a parent of three young Nippers and was thrown in the deep BBQ Helpers and people to assist with setting up and packing up the beach! So we really do need your end as a volunteer. I then put my hand up (as you do) to help and all of a support. sudden I was Junior Activities Coordinator? I had a fantastic time organising Kids love having their families involved in what they are doing and Yamba Surf Club is a great family and coordinating Nipper carnivals and social events with an equally crazy oriented club, where all family members are welcome. committee! It was and still is what I regard as one of the most fulfilling I look forward to another fantastic nipper season on our beautiful beach. experiences Kerry Lee of my life. And here I am again... Please JAC (Nippers) join me Co-Ordinator making the 2015/16 season the best ever for our Nippers and ensure their safety, success and enjoyment on our beautiful beach. Danielle Connolly JAC Director 2015/16 YAMBA NIPPERS Junior activities for our Club are the responsibility of our Junior Activities Committee (JAC), which is a subcommittee of Yamba SLSC. Children who join Nippers can look forward to having fun, meeting new friends and learning the importance of surf skills through a program developed by Surf Life Saving Australia. 4

Any child, boy or girl, may join Nippers once they have turned 5 years of age. To comply with Surf Life Saving Australia regulations, no surf club can accept membership of a child until they have reached the age of five. Children who turn 5 by October 1 st 2015 are able to join Yamba Nippers for the season. NEW nipper memberships for this current season will not be taken after February 1 st, 2016 unless approved by the Co-ordinator. This is to enable all participants to complete the necessary Surf Education program conducted each week. U6 and U7 nipper s activities are sand and shallow-water based. They do not engage in competition. U8 nippers participate in wade activities in waist deep water only and in beach activities. Surf swims and board activities commence from U9s up. Please note that Nippers does not teach children to swim but it does help build on their existing water skills and confidence. 5

WHAT TO BRING? You will need your coloured nipper cap, pink hi-viz singlet (U8 s-14 s), goggles (if you like to wear them), sunscreen, a water bottle and a happy smile! Club swimmers are preferred and are available from the merchandise room during nippers or during office hours (please see the back page for office hours). It is advisable that all clothing and equipment be labelled with your child s name for easy return in case of loss. SKULL CAP POLICY All nippers must wear their coloured skull caps at all times during nippers. The wearing of skull caps is a legal requirement to comply with Surf Life Saving safety regulations. Any nipper without the correct coloured skull cap will not be able to participate at nippers. Yamba s gold and black skull caps must be worn whilst competing at surf carnivals. HIGH VISIBILITY SINGLETS Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Yulgilbar Station, all nippers who participate in water activities (Under 8 s up) will be given a Yamba Surf Club high visibility singlet free of charge. It is Yamba SLSC Nippers policy that high visibility singlets are mandatory for Nippers participating in all water activities. Children will not be allowed to participate in water events if they do not have their singlet on. Surf Lifesaving Australia regulations state that high visibility singlets MUST be worn when competing at all surf carnivals. PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT Parental involvement is important at any club. To be able to operate, Nippers must have qualified Age Managers (1 to every 10 children), Water Safety Personnel (1 to every 5 children in the water, except in calm conditions where it becomes 1:10), Age Manager Assistants, BBQ Helpers and people to set up and pack up the equipment. As you can see, parents are a vital part of Yamba Junior Activities. This junior activity is not a babysitting service but a place of learning in a fun atmosphere. There is an element of risk in this sport so all age managers will need assistance from other parents to ensure the safety of all children. * WATER SAFETY is important. Persons involved in water safety are required to have either a surf lifesaving Bronze Medallion Award or a Surf Rescue Certificate. The surf can be a dangerous place at times, if not treated with respect so, if water safety ratios are not met, water activities will be suspended for ALL age groups. Age Managers must have completed the Age Managers Award, either in person or online. We all know sickness strikes and family commitments come first, so it is important to have more than 2 qualified Age Managers per age group. So if there are no qualified Age Managers for an age group on any particular Nipper day, that age group will be cancelled for the day. Free courses are run each season for members to obtain their Age Managers Award, Surf Rescue Certificate, Bronze Medallion, First Aid Certificate, Advanced Resuscitation or Radio Operator s Certificate. These are advised via the monthly club newsletters. PLEASE offer your assistance, don t assume someone else will do it! 6

IMPORTANT INFORMATION Nippers is NOT for Learn to swim activities. Children need to be able to swim to participate at Nippers each week. (Learn to Swim classes are conducted at the Yamba Community Pool, Maclean Pool, South Grafton Indoor Pool, Grafton Pool and a number of private locations throughout the Clarence Valley). It is mandatory that at least one parent /guardian from each family must be either an Associate or Active (patrol/award/active reserve) member of Yamba SLSC. Each week nippers are required to participate in the Surf Life Saving Education Program. This is incorporated into the weekly activities and therefore it is important that children attend regularly. Age Managers are responsible for the supervision of children during nipper activity times only. Parents must sign their child in and out at the start and end of each session with the appropriate age manager. Age Managers must not sign anybody s child in or out of nippers Each activity day members will assemble at the Nippers control area on the beach ready to follow their Age Manager for activities. Please be on time and ready to start at the designated times. The designated age group coloured skull caps MUST be worn by all participating nippers. Participants must wear sunscreen and are encouraged to bring a water bottle. Parents are requested to assist on the beach wherever possible. Nippers are required to stay with their age group at all times. If your child needs to go to the toilet, the parent or guardian must accompany them. Nippers that wander off from their group will be asked to be signed out by their parent or caregiver. A BBQ is available after activities have finished each week. Parents are asked to help with the BBQ which will be rostered each week to a different age group. Children are not permitted in the clubhouse or board shed without an adult member. To gain their relevant Surf Education Award, it is anticipated that children attend a minimum of 66% of Nippers days throughout the season. 7

AGE MANAGERS Age Managers are responsible for the supervision, well-being and basic training of the nippers in their group. Most of all, the Age Manager is responsible for the promotion of enjoyment, sportsmanship and fun in all activities. Duties performed by the Age Manager include: Supervision of children, ensuring their safety and well-being at all junior activities. Being responsible for instruction of basic movement patterns and basic surf lifesaving skills such as running, wading, catching waves. Acting in a way that will positively influence the personality and social development of the children. Recording of participation and results in events conducted. Having a basic understanding of competition rules and regulations. Developing appropriate plans for others to follow in their absence. If you are interested in becoming an Age Manager there will be hands on training during the season. The position of Age Manager is of a voluntary nature. Assistance from parents on the beach each week is necessary. Yamba Nippers under the care of their Age Manager at a Surf Carnival Coloured skull caps distinguish the age groups at weekly Nipper activities 8

PROFICIENCY Surf Lifesaving Australia sets the minimum standards of water proficiency that each child must attain before being eligible to participate in club water activities, training or competition. Proficiency helps ensure the safety of participants as it gives age managers/committee members a gauge on how competent each child is in the water. *Preliminary Proficiency Evaluation will be held at Yamba Community Pool on Sunday, Sept 27 th from 10am 11.30am and Main Beach Pool during Nippers on Sunday, Oct 11 th from 9.30am. Every junior member is expected to achieve the relevant Surf Education Award for their age group. Completion of the age award is compulsory for nippers wishing to compete at Branch, Country and State Championships 9

BOARDS AND EQUIPMENT Training and competition equipment is expensive to purchase and repair. It is important that all equipment is handled and cared for correctly. Use of nipper boards is only permitted to current financial nippers. Under no circumstances can anyone else use club boards. Club boards are for use during nippers and organised training. Nippers wishing to use boards for 30 minutes after the completion of Nippers must ask permission and parents are responsible for their child and the board. Boards MUST be signed in and out of register inside board shed for accountability purposes. Foam nipper boards are for U9 s and U10 s only. Fibreglass nipper boards are for U11 s, U12 s and U13 s Long boards are for use by U14 s Boards will be carried, not dragged, and be laid fin side up on the sand. They will not be sat or stood on. Boards must be washed down and put away on the racks after use and not left lying in the sun. Parents are encouraged to purchase their own board if they would like their child to have exclusive use of a board. The Club gear steward s decisions on board use are to be respected. Any damage to boards or other equipment should be reported straight away to the gear Steward or the Coordinator so it can be repaired. Board and Swim Subsidies Some carnival competitors MAY be eligible for club subsidies for pool swimming training with an accredited coach or for the assisted purchase of a board (receipts needed). 11 SURF CARNIVALS Summary and Surf Carnival Day Information Yamba Surf Club is part of the Far North Coast Branch of Surf Lifesaving which runs from Yamba to Fingal near the Qld border. Branch carnivals usually begin at 8.30am and finish around 4pm. Parental assistance is required at Carnivals. Help is needed to erect and take down tents, carry gear from our gear trailer to the beach and return at the end of the day. The U8 to U14 nippers are able to compete at carnival level. Notice of competing in a carnival must be given to the JAC Coordinator the Sunday prior to the carnival. You cannot just turn up at a carnival. Nippers must participate in their Surf Education Award by attending a minimum 66% of regular nipper activity days to be eligible to compete at carnivals. Competitors must have passed the relevant Competitions Skills Proficiency before they can attend a carnival. This even applies to children who only want to compete in beach events. There is a ratio of competitors to water safety and officials. If this ratio is not met, children will not be able to compete, so parents or other family members must be willing to take on a role to enable their child to compete. Competitors must remain within the club tent area unless permission to leave from the Age Manager has been approved. Many events including Team events have been missed as a result of competitors wandering from the area. Yamba SLSC competition caps and Yamba club swimmers MUST be worn while competing. Pink hi-viz singlets are required for water events. No jewellery to be worn at any time. Parents, unless performing in uniform as officials, are NOT permitted in the competition arena. The JAC Co-ordinator or designated representative is the only person from our Club eligible to lodge a protest regarding any alleged infringement of the rules. The Carnival is under the direction of the Carnival Referee. The Referee can alter or even cancel a program if adverse surf, beach or weather conditions prevail. No Alcohol and no Smoking is permitted within the Carnival area. Most importantly, carnivals are all about participation and fun. At no time are children to be discouraged from having a go. COMPULSORY Have fun, support each other and be proud to be part of Yamba SLSC! Yamba Nippers Carnival Teams Selection Yamba SLSC supports the efforts of all its competitors. Team events are about sportsmanship as well as competition and all children are encouraged to have a go. Teams are selected prior to the carnival in collaboration with age managers, coaches and the JAC coordinator. All children are given the opportunity to participate in team events. Nippers compete in their respective age division and can only compete up an age group as a last resort to make up team numbers. Questions regarding teams and selections are to be addressed to the JAC Co-ordinator only. 11
