I m not talking about bad roads or a change in our wardrobes. What I am talking about is the effect the cold brings to our skin and nails. As a nail tech I see this on a daily basis. Our feet take a huge hit, and this may be the most noticeable change for us; but the one that many may not feel a change is in your nail plate. It s an extremely subtle change so unless you know what to watch for, you will be like me where I had no idea for the longest time that the atmosphere can really change something as small as the way your nails take to polish. Let me break it down for you on how this works, in Colorado we are in a naturally dry climate; but we do have changes that bring some humidity. The summer is where we will see that the most. So when winter comes I m sure you can all feel the much drier sense in the air. Feet: When the air changes towards the winter months your feet may do a couple of things. You might just feel them become extremely dry and almost chalky like. You might feel the calluses are building up faster and thicker than they normally do. Or in the worst case you may notice that you are developing cracks that become irritated, sore, and for some the may end up bleeding. But don t feel like this means there is no hope for your feet during the winter months! There is plenty you can do to try and help ease the pain, and symptoms of the coldest time of the year. Here are a couple tips you can do to keep things at bay: I do suggest getting pedicures still during the winter. As much as your toes aren t showing, it s still huge that you keep up regular pedicures. It may seem counterproductive, but trust me when I say you will thank yourself when your feet don t feel as dry and crack as easily. When you are at home use a pumice stone or a pedicure file. One thing I need to specify, is try to NOT use it everyday. Pick one day a week where you aren t as busy and then either soak in the tub and use the file then, or after you take a shower use the file then. If you are someone that can sleep with socks on, find a think cream that is free of a lot fragrance and parabens (watch out carefully for those parabens! This is something you really want to avoid in ANY of your products! And definitely avoid petroleum jellies! They wont do you any good), lather it up good without fully rubbing it in, put on some cotton socks and sleep letting that all do the work for you. But if you aren t someone who can sleep with socks on a quick fix for that is to watch a movie with a heating pad on your feet after putting the lotion and the socks on. The heat will speed up the process. If you want to treat yourself, you can always go in for a paraffin treatment. Paraffin is not necessarily a Luxury treatment. The wax has all kinds of essential oils that penetrate deeply into the skin because of heat opening your pores. So don t feel like it s just strictly a little splurge you add to your service, but see it as something that will actually improve your pedicure and see more results from it. 12
13 SPA Hands: This will actually be the area that you may not notice as much. Some of use deal with cracks still happening on our fingertips. I am one that deals with this after days in water and all kinds of drying chemicals. But the area that most people don t see or feel is the effect on the nail plates. In Colorado, we have a constant change of weather where it will be warm in the morning and then next thing you know it s a blizzard by bedtime. It is because of this drastic change that your nails will take a heavy hit. Moisture in the air can make the nail plate expand, so as the humidity becomes less in the winter the nail plate will retract back to a smaller tighter knit weave. So when the weather goes from cold to warm drastically this will actually affect the way polish, gel, or even artificial will last on your nails during the winter. One thing you may see happens more frequently especially if you aren t one that is prone to it is that there may be more of a chance of lifting/chipping. This is just unfortunately one of the things that happens when we have those very drastic changes in the weather, but here are a few things that you can do to help: If you are someone that has been down in the Spa recently I m sure you have heard us all talk about cuticle creams/oils. This is truer more than ever when it comes to giving your manicure more longevity. The best time of day to do this is in the evening if you can only apply it once. But the best way to see results is by applying the cream or oil more than once. Creams are heavier and better for night applications, whereas oils rub in faster and can penetrate deeper faster. Make sure you make an effort to put on lotion daily and multiply times per day. Especially after washing your hands. The more you hydrate your skin the better your nails/hands health will be. If you can try and put a thick cream on you hands and put on some cotton gloves over night. If that is something that isn t comfortable like socks, then do the same thing and watch a movie with a heating pad on your hands to open your pores allowing the moisture to penetrate deeper. Try to keep up with the regular manicure as well. Since it is difficult to care for your own cuticles, keeping up with a nail tech who can push back and trim off the dead skin will do wonders for your nails! If you suffer from cracks in the fingers, one of the best ways to take care of that is something very simple. Everyone should have a bottle of Vitamin E capsules for all kinds of burns, scratches, and scar fading. But most importantly, it heals cuts and cracks in the skin faster. If you feel your skin beginning to crack all you really need to do is just pop a capsule open and apply a few drops and keep a band-aid on your finger if you can. Another little trick is to do a paraffin treatment on your hands as well. It really does great things for your hands as it does your feet. The heat and essential oils help to ease the dry, cracking, almost stretched sensation on your skin. I have used this as a way to heal my own dry skin any number of times. It gets to that point some times where even lotion seems to hurt as you try to heal your skin. But the paraffin always does the trick! There s always more than just these few things that can help the winter woes for our hand and feet, but these are just a few that I hope may change your skin and nails until we hit the warmer weather with some more humidity in the air. Until then, I wish you all happy fingers and happy toes all winter long! 13
