Nichole Stilwell recorded her 200th block against La Salle and crossed the 700-kill mark the following day against Tennessee State. Also against La Salle, Caroline Kurtz tallied her 700th kill and Kelly Spencer collected her 600th dig. In the tournament finale against Memphis, Jessica Hellmann recorded her 1600th assist. They join select company, as only seven other Division I Falcons have surpassed the 700-kill mark, only three others have amassed more than 1600 assists and just four others have earned over 200 total blocks. AROUND THE MOUNTAIN Caroline Kurtz leads the Mountain West Conference in kills, with a per-game average of 3.81 and is ranked second in points, with a per-set average of In addition, Kelly Spencer is ranked fourth in the conference with 3.78 digs per set. As a squad, Air Force is ranked fourth in service aces (1.14 per set) and fifth in opponent hitting percentage (.197). ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM SELECTION Caroline Kurtz was named to the all-tournament team of the Memphis Invitational, based on a vote of tournament coaches. Over the three-match weekend, Kurtz tallied 37 kills (3.36 per set), four service aces and 22 digs. Her four-ace output against La Salle marked the best single-match output this season. She also tallied her fourth double-double of the season and the 16th of her career against Memphis, accounting for 15 kills and 10 digs. FALCONS ON FACEBOOK The volleyball team has joined Facebook! WHAT S ON DECK Still on its month-long road trip, the Air Force volleyball team opens Mountain West Conference play on Friday, Sept. 15, at UNLV. Norton, who had seen action in just one set this season, played in all 11 sets, recording 15 digs. THAT WAS QUICK It took just six matches into the 2010 season for Caroline Kurtz to amass 100 kills. Kelly Spencer crossed the 100-dig plateau (104), while both Jessica Hellmann and Josalynn Wise have accounted for more than 100 assists, with totals of 121 and 116, respectively. PLAYING CLOSE TO HOME Cami Richan recorded her first collegiate kill against Fresno State, but was playing the neutral-site match at Utah Valley, just minutes from her hometown of Highland. Richan added to her stat line the following night against the host Wolverines, tallying another kill. NOT MAKING IT EASY The Falcons are making their opponents work for their wins. Of the Falcons five losses, only one has been held to the minimum three games. Three have gone to four sets, while one has gone to five. In fact, the four non-sweep losses already mark the second best total for an Air Force team since THE FIRST MILESTONE It didn t take Matt McShane long to notch his first victory as a head coach. With a thrilling 3-2 victory over Long Island on Friday, Aug. 27, McShane earned his first win during his first match. It is the sixth time in the program s history that the Falcons mentor has won their coaching debut. SWEET CAROLINE Senior Caroline Kurtz was named to the all-tournament team of the 2010 Falcon Invitational, en route to being named Air Force s Athlete of the Week. For the three-match weekend, Kurtz tallied 55 kills, 30 digs and four service aces, while pacing the Falcons in kills during all three matches. She tallied the 13th doubledouble of her career in the Falcons win over Long Island, amassing 20 kills and 19 digs. AIR FORCE IN SEASON OPENERS With the victory over Long Island, Air Force improved to during the first match of the season. The win also bumped the Falcons over.500 in season openers since joining Division I (8-7). HOME SWEET HOME Air Force rededicated the Falcon Court at East Gym with a thrilling 3-2 win over Long Island in front of 1000 fans. WE RE NOT GOING DOWN QUIETLY Trailing 2-1 in the season-opener against Long Island, Air Force rallied to win the fourth and fifth sets, en route to the match victory. Even in their two losses, the Falcons kept their opponents from a sweep, winning the third set of each match. Against South Dakota State, Air Force held a six-point margin of victory in its winning set, while edging out a two-point win in the third game against Boise State. FRESHMAN FOCUS Annalyse Schmitt and Caitie Campbell earned a spot in the starting rotation of the Falcons season opener. Schmitt had a stellar debut, recording a double-double (13 kills-11 digs) against Long Island. For the weekend, she amassed 30 kills and 19 digs, while assisting on a pair of blocks. Campbell s defense was immediately felt, as she tallied six blocks in her first collegiate match, including a pair of solo stops. During the threematch tournament, Campbell claimed a team-best five solo stops and assisted on six others. A NEW DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY Long Island was the first of six teams Air Force will face this year that participated in the 2009 NCAA Tournament. Joining LIU on the non-conference slate is Northern Colorado and Army, while Colorado State, New Mexico and TCU all represented the Mountain West Conference at the national tournament. IT S A FAMILY AFFAIR Over half of the Air Force squad had some familial connection to the Air Force Academy prior to their appointment. The fathers of Preslee Maki, Jacqueline Norton, Victoria Perkins and Josalynn Wise all graduated from the Academy, while siblings of Caitie Campbell, Caroline Kurtz and Jamie Stewart are also in the Association of Graduates. In addition, Claire Bieber s sister is a junior at the Academy and Maiya Perich s brother is a senior. THE YOUNG WILL LEAD With seven freshmen on its roster, Air Force is ranked among the national leaders in terms of the size of its youngest class. Ranked eighth, Air Force is one of eight programs with seven true freshmen in its lineup. Penn State, San Diego State, South Carolina and UMBC hold the national lead with nine true freshmen. LEADING THE WAY For the first time in the 34-year history of the Air Force volleyball program, the Falcons will have three team captains, as seniors Julia Hansen, Jessica Hellmann and Caroline Kurtz will share the captaincy duties.
