The Falcons (9-6, 0-2 MW) begin the first half of their two-week stint in Clune Arena with matches against Nevada (Sept. 29 at 5:00 p.m.) and San Diego State (Oct. 1 at 7:00 p.m.). FOLLOW ALONG FROM HOME Both matches will be streamed live on FalconVision and the Mountain West Network, with Jason Carter (Thursday/ Saturday) and George Egan (Thursday) on the call. San Diego St leads 34-5 Last Meeting AF won 3-2 SCOUTING THE WOLFPACK Nevada brings a 9-4 record to the Academy and holds a 0-1 mark in Mountain West action. The Wolfpack, which has one Colorado native on its roster in senior Madison Thorpe (Parker, Chaparral HS), opened the conference season with a 3-2 loss to Utah State in their only match of the week. Madison Morrell leads the conference in kills, with a 4.25 average, while the team is ranked second with a.263 hitting percentage. SCOUTING THE AZTECS San Diego State, which will face Boise State prior to its meeting with the Falcons, is 9-6 on the year and 1-0 in conference play. Paced by Deja Harris, who leads the Mountain West with a.436 hitting percentage, the Aztecs opened league play with a 3-2 victory over Utah State on Saturday. San Diego State, which also dropped a close non-mw match to seventh-ranked San Diego last week, is ranked among the Mountain West s top-five in assists (fourth, 12.21) and kills (fifth, 13.04). SERIES HISTORY Air Force leads the series with Nevada by a 5-4 margin, although the Wolfpack swept the Falcons last season to narrow the all-time gap. San Diego State holds a 34-5 advantage over the Falcons in the series, but Air Force has been victorious in the last three meetings. AROUND THE CONFERENCE Through the fifth week of the season, three Falcons are listed among the Mountain West leaders. Elizabeth Pennington is ranked fourth in kills (3.97) and fifth in points (4.34), while Abigail Miksch is ranked fifth in kills (3.90) and sixth in points (4.18). In addition, Sarah Hellman is ranked fifth in assists (10.10) and the team is ranked among the top half of the conference in aces (fourth, 1.37) and digs (fourth, 14.02). BY THE NUMBERS The Falcons completed the first 15 matches of the season with a 9-6 record a tally that includes the third-most wins during that span in Division I history. In addition, it marked just the fourth time since joining Division I that Air Force produced a winning record throughout its first 15 matches. NOW STARTING... The Falcons have used nine different starting lineups during the first half of the 2016 season. WHAT S ON DECK Air Force concludes its four-match homestand at Clune Arena next week, with confernece matches against Boise State (Oct. 4) and Utah State (Oct. 6). That record accounted for the program s second-best non-league winning percentage in Division I history (.692), while the nine victories are the most non-conference wins since 2003 and the third-most during a DI season. MAY I HELP YOU? Sarah Hellman accounted for a career-high 58 assists during the Falcons 3-1 victory over Southern Utah. That total a new Clune Arena record marked the fifth time this season that the sophomore has surpassed the 50-assist mark in a match. Hellman, who also broke that plateau against Jacksonville State (52), Grand Canyon (52), Cal State Fullerton (54) and Colgate (54), surpassed the 1300-assist mark for her career during the Southern Utah match. OFF TO THEIR BEST START With an 8-2 record to start the 2016 campaign, the Falcons equaled the best 10-match opening in Division I history. This current Air Force squad matched the 8-2 start that the 1999 and 2003 squads also produced. BUT WAIT... THERE S MORE The Falcons 8-2 start to the season also gives head coach Marc Swindle the program s best 10-match start to a coaching career since Ed Halik went 9-1 to start his Air Force coaching tenure at the Division II level in With the 8-2 slate, Swindle matched the mark that Bill Peer recorded the following year. BLOCK PARTY Savannah Banyai, Piper Heineck and Sarah Hellman combined for a triple block during the Falcons five-set victory over Colgate on Sept. 10, marking the first such feat in recent program history. STARTING OFF STRONG With a 5-1 record in its first six matches, Air Force is off to its best start in Division I history matching the 5-1 mark that the 1999 squad also produced. In fact, the Falcons five wins in six matches marks just the fifth time in DI history that the squad has been.500 or better six matches into a campaign. TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS! Air Force won the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic team title after posting a perfect 3-0 record, with victories over Nicholls State (3-1), Louisiana (3-2) and Alabama A&M (3-1). It is the Falcons first tournament title since winning the Air Force Invitational in 2014 and just the second in the last decade. PENNINGTON NAMED MVP, MIKSCH EARNS ALL-TOURNAMENT SELECTION Elizabeth Pennington was selected as the MVP of the Sawyer Camillo Classic, while Abigail Miksch joined her on the all-tournament team. It is the second straight week that the pair has earned all-tourney status. REACHING A MILESTONE Sarah Hellman recorded the 1000th assist of her career against Alabama A&M on Sept. 3, becoming Air Force s eighth Division I player to reach the 1K milestone in career assists. The sophomore, who entered the season with 740 helpers, has already amassed 281 during the first six matches. FALCONS TAKE TWO OF THREE ON OPENING WEEKEND The 2-1 start to the season is the best opening three-match record for the Falcons since MIKSCH, PENNINGTON NAMED TO ASMC ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Following standout performances during the Falcons season-opening tournament, Abigail Miksch and Elizabeth Pennington were named to the all-tournament team of the Amy Svoboda Memorial Classic. CLUNE RECORDS FALL IN ARENA RETURN Four Clune Arena records fell during the Falcons return on Aug Abigail Miksch and Elizabeth Pennington set a new venue record with 23 kills against Jacksonville State and Montana State, respectively, while Sarah Hellman posted an arena-record 52 assists against both Jacksonville State and Grand Canyon. In addition, the 63 team assists against JSU and the 90 total digs against MSU are also new Arena records. THE FIVE-SET FALCONS The Falcons accounted for the sixth-highest point total in Academy history (111) during its five set thriller with Jacksonville State on Aug. 26 and followed that with the eighth-highest total (109) during its five-set comeback over Montana State on Aug. 27. THE EFFECT Combining for 44 kills against Jacksonville State, Abigail Miksch (23) and Elizabeth Peninington (21) are the first pair of teammates in program history to break the 20-kill mark in the same match. SWINDLE NABS FIRST VICTORY IN COACHING DEBUT With the Falcons thrilling 25-21, 25-19, 23-25, 23-25, win over Jacksonville State on Aug. 26, Marc Swindle became the seventh straight Air Force coach to win their coaching debut. AIR FORCE IN SEASON OPENERS With a 3-2 win over Jacksonville State, the Falcons improved to all-time in openers. WELCOME TO THE SHOW The Falcons added one sophomore (Erin Sagisi: Redondo Beach, Calif.) and three freshmen (Denise Ssozi: Johnston, Iowa; Alina Vanecek: Albuquerque, N.M.; Bianca Walker: Roswell, N.M.) to their roster for 2016.

4 HAPPY ANNIVERSARY The volleyball team is celebrating its 40th season in HOME SWEET HOME The Falcons will play 15 matches at the Academy s Clune Arena in 2016, including the Amy Svoboda Memorial Classic (Aug ), three additional non-conference matches (Sept ) and nine Mountain West contests. THE YOUNG WILL LEAD A young squad will take to the floor this season, as Air Force returns just one starter (Sarah Hellman) and only three (Hellman, Shanleigh Conlan, Elizabeth Pennington) that played in more than 45 sets last year. ON THE SIDELINES Air Force s 2016 squad is under the direction of first-year head coach Marc Swindle, who took over the program in April after spending the previous six seasons as an assistant coach on the Falcons staff. Swindle will be joined on the sideline by Keith Barnett, Elysse Richardson and cadet coach Raquel Rosas. THE WOMAN BEHIND THE AMY SVOBODA MEMORIAL CLASSIC The Falcons annual season-opening tournament is named after Amy Svoboda, a 1989 Academy graduate and four-year letterwinner on the Air Force volleyball team, who was killed during an A-10 training accident in Svoboda, who earned MVP honors during her senior season with the Falcons, was one of the first 14 female fighter pilots in the Air Force... and one of the first six to fly the A-10.
