The Falcons, who snapped a five-year conference losing streak last week, return to Falcon Court at East Gym to host TCU on Friday, Oct. 29. Air Force will close out its three-match homestand on Sunday, Oct. 31, when it takes on New Mexico in a nationally televised match. For the second time in three matches, the Falcons will be featured on national television. Air Force s Oct. 31 match against New Mexico will be broadcast live on CBS College Sports, as a part of a Mountain West Conference double-header. The match, scheduled to start at 4 p.m., will be called by Tammy Blackburn and Jeremy Knapp. OTHER WAYS TO FOLLOW THE FALCONS Live stats will be available for both matches, while video streaming will only be available for Friday s match against TCU. In addition, the Academy s cadet radio station, KAFA 97.7 FM, will broadcast live from Falcon Court at East Gym for both matches. Viewing and listening otions are available on the calendar page of GoAirForceFalcons.com. PROMOTIONS Friday s match against TCU is Family Friday, featuring four tickets for just $4.00. In addition, the first 200 fans in attendance will receive an Air Force stocking cap. Sunday s match will feature a Halloween Party. Fans wearing a costume will receive free admission to the match, while prizes will be awarded for the best costume. Fans will also receive Halloween treats and the first 200 adults will receive a free re-usable tote bag. COACHING CONNECTIONS Two thirds of the Falcons coaching staff has spent some time on the bench at the University of New Mexico. Marc Swindle spent the seasons as a volunteer coach with the Lobos, while Matt McShane served as an assistant at UNM from KURTZ CLAIMS CONFERENCE AWARD Caroline Kurtz became just the sixth Air Force volleyball player to be named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week and only the second since After averaging 6.00 kills, 3.25 digs and 6.00 points in the Falcons win over San Diego State, Kurtz shared the Oct. 25 honor with New Mexico s Lisa Meeter. Kurtz and fellow senior Nichole Stilwell (Sept ) are the only two Falcons since 2003 to be chosen as the league s top player. While Air Force ended a season-high seven-match losing streak on Oct. 21, several long-standing marks were also broken with that 3-1 victory over San Diego State. The Falcons snapped a 74-match losing streak against Mountain West Conference opponents, while defeating the Aztecs for the first time in 21 matches. HISTORY 101 Prior to the four-set victory over the Aztecs, Air Force last won a league contest on Nov. 7, 2005, when it swept TCU at home. The Oct. 21 win was just the second Mountain West Conference win by the Falcons since the conclusion of the 2003 season. The victory was also Air Force s second win ever over San Diego State. The 2010 Falcons joined the 1999 squad as the only teams to defeat the Aztecs. FALCONS ON FACEBOOK The volleyball team has joined Facebook! She added 13 digs to record her 20th career double-double. Her 24-kill performance was the most by a MWC player in a leauge match this season and the secondbest tally of the season in overall matches. It was also a personal improvement that bettered the 20 kills she set twice during five-set matches earlier this season. DID YOU KNOW? Caroline Kurtz became the third Division I Air Force player to record at least 20 double-doubles in a career. With her 20th such total on Oct. 21, Kurtz joins Delavane Diaz (29) and Kristin Huitt (27) on that elite list. TOTAL TEAM EFFORT Against SDSU, Air Force tallied season-best marks in hitting percentage (.248), kills (59) and assists (56). Backed by strong hitting in the first ( k-2e-32a) and third ( k-5e-31a) sets, the Falcons tallied an attack percentage that was nearly 30 points higher than the previous best outing (.218) against Bryant. Individually, six Falcons hit.250 or higher, including a.400 (2k-0e-5a) from setter Jessica Hellmann. BY THE NUMBERS Caroline Kurtz was one of three Falcons to record double-digit kill totals against San Diego State. Annalyse Schmitt collected a career-best 18 kills, while Nichole Stilwell added 10. Schmitt claimed two of the team s three service aces, while Stilwell put down the matchwinning kill, in addition to a pair of blocks. Jessica Hellmann collected a season-best 50 assists, while adding 13 digs for her fourth career double-double. GETTING TO 800 With her final kill against BYU on Oct. 14, Nichole Stilwell recorded the 800th kill of her career. During that match, Stilwell moved from seventh to sixth on the program s all-time Division I list. During her first three seasons, she amassed single season kill totals of 188 (freshman), 189 (sophomore) and 249 (junior). MORE MAGIC NUMBERS Against Utah on Oct. 16, a pair of Falcons hit the 250 mark for their respective statistics during a single season. Caroline Kurtz collected her 250th kill of the year, while Josalynn Wise claimed her 250th seasonal assist. In addition, Kelly Spencer is just four digs away from reaching the 250 plateau in that stat category. FALCON COURT IS THE PLACE TO BE! The Falcons set a new East Gym attendance record on Oct. 9, as 1,284 fans packed into Falcon Court at East Gym to watch Air Force take on Wyoming. It is the second time in five home matches this season that Air Force has surpassed the 1000-fan mark. In fact, it marked the second-largest crowd ever to watch an Air Force volleyball match on Academy grounds. THIS MATCH WAS SPONSORED BY THE LETTER A Annalyse Schmitt stepped up big for the Falcons against Wyoming on Oct. 19, as she led all players with 14 kills. It was the fourth time that Schmitt had surpassed the 10-kill mark and the first time in a threeset match. Highlighting her outing was a stretch of five consecutive kills by Schmitt, as she helped the Falcons from a 9-8 deficit to a lead in the second set AIR FORCE VOLLEYBALL MOVING ON UP Bolstered by a team-high 13 digs against Wyoming on Oct. 9, Caroline Kurtz moved into third on the program s Division I list for career digs. NO ANSWER FOR FRICK Emily Frick hit a career-best.600 against 17th-ranked Colorado State, as she accounted for six kills on 10 attempts (no errors). That is the best percentage by any Air Force player this season. The performance helped the senior bump her season average up 213 points. MEETING THE MILESTONES Caroline Kurtz recorded her 200th kill of the year on Sept. 30. In her first 16 matches, Kurtz has already bettered her season totals from her freshman (203) and sophomore (105) seasons. Also during the Falcons road swing at New Mexico and TCU, Kelly Spencer cleared 200 digs, Jessica Hellmann went over 300 assists and Josalynn Wise bettered the 200-helper tally. JUST CAN T STOP HER Nichole Stilwell hit for a match-leading.533 at TCU on Oct. 2, as she scored on 10 of 15 attempts, while committing just two errors. Stilwell has led the Falcons in hitting percentage during 10 of the first 16 matches. During the third set, Stilwell accounted for three of the Falcons four kills during a mid-set run. HOME SWEET HOME Playing in her hometown of Albuquerque, N.M., for the final time, Caroline Kurtz had a stellar night. She paced the team with 12 kills, while adding 12 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. In addition, she recorded the Falcons lone service ace and hit for a team-best clip of.222 (12k-4e-36a). GETTING THE NAME OUT THERE Nichole Stilwell led the Falcons in several categories during the loss at UNLV on Sept. 24, as she collected 12 kills and a.346 hitting percentage. She also tied Julia Hansen and Preslee Maki with two blocks. DUO EARNS ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS Nichole Stilwell and Caroline Kurtz were named to the all-tournament team of the West Point Challenge, after combining for 91 kills and 23 blocks. Kurtz, who also earned all-tourney team honors at the Falcon Invitational and Memphis Invitational, let the team with 47 kills. Stilwell, claiming her first all-tournament selection of the year, added 44 kills while tying for the team-lead with 16 blocks (three solo, 13 assisted). FALCONS SNAP SKID, DOWN HOFSTRA IN FOUR Air Force snapped a five-match losing streak by defeating Hofstra in four sets in its final match of the West Point Challenge on Sept. 19. The Falcons won the first set 25-22, before falling by a close margin in the second set. Air Force won the final two games, 25-23, to claim the four set victory. IT S A BLOCK PARTY Air Force accumulated 65 total blocks during the West Point Challenge, including five solo stops. Nichole Stilwell and Preslee Maki tied for the team lead with 16 blocks apiece. Stilwell accounted for three solo and 13 assisted blocks, while Maki added one solo and 15 assisted stops. In addition, Cami Richan, Julia Hansen and Caroline Kurtz each tallied seven blocks.

4 MAKI MAGIC Entering the West Point Challenge, Preslee Maki had recorded seven blocks (one solo, six assisted). Following the tournament, Maki s total increased to 23 (two solo, 21 assisted). From the front line, Maki posted the team lead in blocks against Buffalo (five) and Bryant (six), while sharing part of the lead against Army (two). Her six blocks against the Bulldogs are tied for the second-best single-match output of the season. RICHAN HAS STELLAR WEEKEND IN STARTING LINE Cami Richan had a stellar weekend at the West Point Challenge, earning her first start of the season against Bryant. Over the four matches, Richan accounted for 20 kills and a team-best.333 hitting percentage. Richan hit an impressive.538 against Bryant, connecting on eight of 13 attempts while committing just one error. That is the best hitting by any member of the Air Force squad all season. Richan, who recorded her first dig and block of the season over the weekend, finished with four digs and seven assisted blocks. HITTING 100 Annalyse Schmitt recorded her 100th kill of the season in the win over Hofstra on Sept. 19. The kill, which put Air Force up 20-18, came during the fourth set of the Falcons 3-1 win. ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM SELECTION Caroline Kurtz was named to the all-tournament team of the Memphis Invitational. Over the three-match weekend, Kurtz tallied 37 kills (3.36 per set), four aces and 22 digs. Her four-ace output against La Salle marked the best single-match output this season. GETTING THE NOD Jacqueline Norton received her first collegiate start against La Salle on Sept. 10 and tallied her first service ace during that match. Norton, who had seen action in just one set prior to the match against the Explorers, played in all 11 sets, recording 15 digs. IN SELECT COMPANY Over Sept , four Falcons crossed significant milestones. Nichole Stilwell recorded her 200th block against LaSalle and crossed the 700-kill mark the following day against Tennessee State. Also against LaSalle, Caroline Kurtz tallied her 700th kill and Kelly Spencer collected her 600th dig. In the finale against Memphis, Jessica Hellmann recorded her 1600th assist. They join select company, as only seven other Division I Falcons have surpassed the 700-kill mark, only three have amassed more than 1600 assists and just four have earned over 200 blocks. THAT WAS QUICK It took just six matches into the 2010 season for Caroline Kurtz to amass 100 kills. Kelly Spencer crossed the 100-dig plateau (104), while both Jessica Hellmann and Josalynn Wise have accounted for more than 100 assists, with totals of 121 and 116, respectively. PLAYING CLOSE TO HOME Cami Richan recorded her first collegiate kill against Fresno State, but was playing the neutralsite match at Utah Valley, just minutes from her hometown of Highland. Richan added to her stat line the following night against the host Wolverines, tallying another kill. NOT MAKING IT EASY The Falcons are making their opponents work for their wins. Of the Falcons five losses, only one has been held to the minimum three games. Three have gone to four sets, while one has gone to five. In fact, the four non-sweep losses already mark the second best total for an Air Force team since THE FIRST MILESTONE It didn t take Matt McShane long to notch his first victory as a head coach. With a thrilling 3-2 victory over NCAA Tournament-team Long Island on Aug. 27, McShane claimed his first win. It is the sixth time in the program s history that the Falcons mentor has won their debut. IT S TOURNEY TIME! Caroline Kurtz was named to the all-tournament team of the Falcon Invitational, en route to being named Air Force s Athlete of the Week. For the three-match weekend, Kurtz tallied 55 kills, 30 digs and four aces, while pacing the Falcons in kills. She tallied the 13th double-double of her career in the Falcons win over Long Island, amassing 20 kills and 19 digs. HAPPY HOMECOMING NEWS The Falcons 3-2 win over Long Island on Aug. 27 marked Air Force s first win at home since Sept. 13, In fact, it was just the Falcons seventh home win since the start of the 2006 season (matches were played at Clune Arena). 5 AIR FORCE IN SEASON OPENERS With the victory over Long Island, Air Force improved to in season openers. The win also bumped the Falcons over.500 in openers since joining Division I AIR FORCE VOLLEYBALL HOME SWEET HOME Air Force rededicated Falcon Court at East Gym with a thrilling 3-2 win over Long Island in front of 1000 fans. That is the fifth-highest attendance ever for an Air Force home volleyball match and the third highest ever in the Cadet East Gymnasium. WE RE NOT GOING DOWN QUIETLY Trailing 2-1 in the season-opener against Long Island, Air Force rallied to win the fourth and fifth sets, en route to the match victory. Even in their two losses, the Falcons kept their opponents from a sweep, winning the third set of each match. A NEW DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY Long Island was the first of six teams Air Force will face this year that participated in the 2009 NCAA Tournament. Joining LIU on the non-league slate is Northern Colorado and Army, while Colorado State, New Mexico and TCU all represented the Mountain West Conference at the national tournament. FRESHMAN FOCUS Annalyse Schmitt and Caitie Campbell earned a spot in the starting rotation of the Falcons season opener. Schmitt had a stellar debut, recording a double-double (13 kills-11 digs) against Long Island. For the weekend, she amassed 30 kills and 19 digs, while assisting on a pair of blocks. Campbell s defense was immediately felt, as she tallied six blocks in her first match, including a pair of solo stops. During the three-match tournament, Campbell claimed a five solo stops and assisted on six. IT S A FAMILY AFFAIR Over half of the Air Force squad had some familial connection to the Air Force Academy prior to their appointments. The fathers of Preslee Maki, Jacqueline Norton, Victoria Perkins and Josalynn Wise all graduated from the Academy, while siblings of Caroline Kurtz and Jamie Stewart are also in the Association of Graduates. In addition, Claire Bieber s sister is a junior and Maiya Perich s brother is a senior. THE YOUNG WILL LEAD With seven freshmen on its roster, Air Force is ranked among the national leaders in terms of the size of its youngest class. Ranked eighth, Air Force is one of eight programs with seven true freshmen in its lineup. Penn State, San Diego State, South Carolina and UMBC hold the national lead with nine true freshmen. LEADING THE WAY For the first time in the 34-year history of the Air Force volleyball program, the Fal cons will have three team captains, as seniors Julia Hansen, Jessica Hellmann and Caroline Kurtz will share the captaincy duties. It is just the 12th time ever that more than one player has held the captain s position.
