3 page 3 BADGER BEACON CELEBRATING 25 YEARS Parents sought for Serve United progra H.E.L.P. It ight be a four-letter word, but it could be a life-saver for coaches and club directors looking for soe assistance to get the through the club volleyball season. When a parent asks, How can I help? coaches and club directors can direct the to the Badger Region s Serve United progra. The progra encourages adults (parents, friends, fans, etc.) to be part of the club volleyball experience and give their teas a hand throughout the season. What sort of hand is up to the coaches and club directors. But in the two years that the progra has existed, parents have contributed in soe of the following ways: Line judging Scoring or scorekeeping Shagging volleyballs Acting as a second referee Doing these types of things allow athletes ore tie to rest, recover, eat and re-hydrate between atches at tournaents. It gets the off their feet. And it gives parents soething to do during down tie. We feel that parents who have a strong opinion about the calls that are being ade on the court should try it theselves before they return to the bleachers where they often get glared at for their reactions to calls in the gae. Parents who coplete the requireents listed below will have their ebership and background screening fees reibursed by the Badger Region. They re doing their tea a favor, so we felt they should be rewarded. All participants in the progra also get a free t-shirt and other cool Badger Region swag. So, what are the requireents to be a part of the Badger Region s Serve United progra? Parents ust: Obtain a Chaperone ebership ($27) Get a background screening ($18) Coplete the SafeSport certification progra (free) Take a handful of officiating odules online (free) Once these are copleted, they will be sent a reiburseent check and a goodie bag full of Badger Region gear. Another positive of the progra should be very encouraging to parents of young athletes. The ore SafeSport-certified and background-screened adults that are at events, the better. That way, ore people are looking out for the safety of all the players in the gy. Over the course of the last two seasons, over 60 parents at close to 20 clubs have copleted the progra. For soe parents, getting that taste of officiating ade the want to get ore ref training. And since the progra started, soe parents have gone on to becoe ore involved in officiating with the Badger Region and other volleyball organizations reffing at high school, club and NCAA atches. If you have any questions about the Serve United progra and how to join, eail brian@badgervolleyball.org or call A check list can be found at serve-united-2 to help participants ake sure they have taken the proper steps to copleting all the progra s requireents. The deadline to becoe a Serve United parent is March 31 (the final day of the Badger Region Chapionships). The next tie you think you can H.E.L.P., think Serve United. God luck this season! Badger Region Power League to feature 190 teas In the first year of the progra, there will be 192 teas fro 30 clubs coing to the series. In all, there will be just over 3,400 atches for the Badger Region Power League. Clubs coitted to the 2019 Badger Region Power League include: * 360 Volleyball Acadey * 414 Milwaukee Elite * Adversity-Wisconsin * Balance VBC * Capital Volleyball Acadey * Eclipse VBC * Epic VBC * FC Elite * Fond du Lac Fusion * Fox Valley Perforance VBC * Ipact VBC * Jr Red Knight VBC * Midwest Penguins * Milwaukee Sting * Motion Volleyball Progra * Next Level VBC * One Wisconsin VBC * Revolution Volleyball Acadey * River City * Rolling Thunder VBC * Royal VBC * Southwest Milwaukee VBC * V-Hawk Extree * Club W * Wisconsin Blaze * Wisconsin Ice VBC * Wisconsin Juniors * Wisconsin Preier VBC Director of Operations Jen Arson-Dyer calls the Badger Region Power League a huge success, and it hasn t even started yet. 7 page 7 BADGER BEACON celebrating 25 years Shout outs, banners and headgear By Ji Mosen Badger Region Ref Chair Congratulations to Badger Region officials Julie Voeck, Ji Arts, Mark Beran, Lexi Sheldon, Scott Prox, Chris Haworth, and Ji Mosen! Voeck was selected to referee the first two rounds of the NCAA Woen s Division I Volleyball Chapionships at the University of Minnesota! Arts and Beran worked as the scorer/libero tracker tea during the first two rounds of the tournaent at Marquette University. Prox and Haworth worked as line judges at the University of Wisconsin. Sheldon line judged at Marquette, and Mosen was head referee at the NAIA Woen s Volleyball National Chapionships in Sioux City, Iowa. Great job, everyone! More Badger Region banners worth reading FROM THE REF STAND I stopped in the Badger Region this week and was given a preview of a couple new banners that will be displayed at Badger Region sponsored events (Qualifiers, Power League, and Chapionships). Thought I would share iages of the with you. The first addresses Spectator/ Parent Sportsanship. The second addresses sportsanship and the need for officials (this is an iage of the proof) Headgear? A question cae to us regarding a player wearing headgear (saple iage below). After reviewing USAV Rule which states, It is forbidden to wear hats or casts (even if padded). Not being sure if this was considered a hat, I sent the question to Bill Stanley, USAV Rules Interpreter. Stanley replied, Rule when it refers to even if padded, is referring to a cast that is padded, not the hat. Or, if it did refer to a hat, it was not eant to refer to a protective helet. This falls under protective gear, like knee pads or knee braces. It does not require a waiver and is allowed. As long as it does not create a danger to the player or teaates, it s good to go. They are ok to use it. Our casebook does have a scenario that touches on this. We do have in there that USAV is not liable for concussions. Wear at their own risk. If you have any ore rules, unifor, or situational questions, please eail the to brian@ badgervolleyball.org. Thank you again for all of your efforts to ake volleyball better and ore enjoyable! AVCA, Badger Region partner for club season The Aerican Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) has reached an agreeent with 12 Regional Volleyball Associations to enter an affiliate partner relationship for the season. The AVCA-Region Affiliate Partner Progra (AVCA-RAPP) is designed to link college and youth volleyball by providing regions with inforation on colleges in their area, failiarizing the with various recruiting rules, providing opportunities for engageent and recognition, and sharing educational aterials. The 12 inaugural AVCA-RAPP ebers are Badger, Chesapeake, Delta, Florida, Garden Epire, Great Lakes, Heart of Aerica, Iowa, North Country, Paletto, Pioneer and Rocky Mountain. The AVCA will correspond with region coissioners and staff who will disseinate the inforation to their clubs and ebers. We are thrilled for the opportunity to serve these 12 regions, said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. Our goals are to fortify the region brand, educate and engage their constituency by sharing our expertise, and build a collective sense of counity. I excited for the failies and clubs of Badger Region about our new partnership with the AVCA, said Badger Region Director of Operations Jen Arson-Dyer. I glad we re on the leading edge of working with an organization full of college coaches to help bridge the inforational gap. This partnership will also allow us to recognize those region club coaches and directors who are coitted to their craft and help their players and failies grow and flourish, both on the court and in future endeavors. This new partnership between the AVCA and the regions of USA Volleyball is a great idea, said Steve Bishop, president of the Florida Region. This progra will help to better connect our club volleyball coaches with the AVCA s college coach ebers. As our sport continues to grow across the country, anything we can do to help connect our clubs to ore educational opportunities and networking is a plus. I look forward to rolling out the various educational, networking and recognition opportunities in the coing onths and I applaud the AVCA for their work in our sport. Other benefits of the AV- CA-RAPP are a region-specific ap of college progras, general inforation on recruiting rules and terinology, a college coaches panel, educational aterials for club coaches, and options to participate in AVCA awards progras. Most of the engageent between the AVCA and Region Affiliates will take place during the club season fro January thru April.

10 page 10 BADGER BEACON celebrating 25 years How is the Badger Region Board structured? The Badger Region Volleyball Association is governed by a Board of Directors that ust be elected by ebers on a regular basis. Area reps serve three-year ters, while ebers of the executive board serve fouryear ters. Mebers, whether they are players, coaches, parents, directors, athletic trainers or officials, are encouraged to counicate with their respective representative if they think policies or financial decision in the Region need to be changed. Soe policies enforced by Badger Region coe fro USA Volleyball, our sport s national governing body, so those can t be changed. But any others can. The Board is advised by a 11 chairpersons (or experts) in various parts of the gae, and five staff ebers (soe of which have ultiple responsibilities). The state is divided into five parts geographically for representation. Plus, there are two at-large board ebers who you can approach if you don t feel cofortable with your current rep. And there is a rep dedicated just to issues that surround our Junior volleyball clubs and athletes. You ll be hearing fro each Board eber twice a year in the for of a colun in the Badger Beacon.
