5 WELCOME TO A very warm welcome to Godstone Road to all players, officials and supporters from Storrington F.C. for today s SCFL Division 1 encounter. Lingfield go into today s game after a 2-2 draw last Saturday at home to table topping Saltdean. Despite leading twice the Lingers couldn t hold on to take all three points and will rue a number of missed chances. Our reserves won again last Saturday, a 0-6 away victory at Midhurst & Easebourne sees them remain in second place two points behind Chichester City. Our u18s suffered their first league defeat of the season going down 4-3 to South Park but still remain top of the table four points ahead of Horley. They start their Surrey Floodlit Cup campaign on Monday with a tough away game to Walton & Hersham. The Sunday team were sadly eliminated from the Sunday cup but this enables them to concentrate on the league, they welcome table toppers Charlwood Village to Godstone Road on Sunday, 10.30am kick off, your support will be welcomed. Finally today we would like to welcome representatives from the Lingfield & Dormansland Fairtrade Group. They have kindly agreed to sponsor the club by providing us with Fairtrade training balls, these will be presented to the club before kick-off. The group was set up in 2004 and aims to spread the word about Fairtrade and encourage others in the community to use Fairtrade products and for local shops to have them available. The purchase of Fairtrade footballs will guarantee the workers who make them will receive a fairer deal, with safe and fair working conditions. Additionally they will benefit from Fairtrade Premiums, these are an extra amount paid per ball to local groups of Fairtrade football stitching workers and factory owners to improve their communities. This is a most worthwhile project and one which Lingfield FC is proud to be associated with. Enjoy the game today.

6 The top four in the Premier Division are separated by just three points after they all won their respective matches in the latest round of fixtures. After a midweek defeat at Horsham YMCA, Shoreham returned to winning ways at home to Newhaven. Jack Hartley gave the Mussels an early lead, which was then increased with George Gaskin and Rob O Toole on target late on in a 3-0 win. Haywards Heath, Pagham and Eastbourne United all kept within reach of the Musselmen with wins of their own. Scott Murfin, Kieron Pamment and Dale Hayes goals saw Pagham win 3-0 away at Crawley Down, whilst Callum Saunders got the only goal for Haywards Heath in a 1-0 win at home to Littlehampton Town. Hassocks returned to winning ways in style with a 5-0 win at Worthing United. Ben Bacon scored a hat-trick, with James Westlake and Harry Mills completing the scoring. After three league defeats in a row, Eastbourne Town also picked up three points with victory at Wick. Sean Ray opened the scoring, with Chris Cumming-Bart bagging two goals in the 4-0 win. Tyler Capon completed the scoring. Loxwood picked up their fourth win of the season in style at AFC Uckfield Town. Michael Wood scored twice, with further goals from Mark Cave, Toby House, Byron Napper and Clyde Jacques. Shaun Loft scored a late consolation for the hosts. Ollie Moore scored twice for Broadbridge Heath as they beat Hailsham Town, 4-0. Dean Wright and Jamie Robinson got the other goals. After beating Shoreham on Wednesday, Horsham YMCA fell to defeat at Chichester City. Josh Clack and Josh Case got the goals for hosts Chi as they won 2-1. In the division s other game, Ryan Waterman cancelled out Connor Wilkins opener as Lancing drew 1-1 away at Peacehaven. In the only Sussex FA Parafix Senior Cup tie, Wes Tate scored a hat-trick on his Little Common debut as they beat Selsey, 5-0. Lewis Hole scored the other two goals for Russell Eldridge s side. Mile Oak are a point behind Saltdean United at the top with a game in hand after they won and the Tigers could only draw at Lingfield. Samuel Bell twice put the Lingers ahead, but only for Rickie Mitchell and a late Matt Geard goal to earn Saltdean United a point. Enzo Benn scored in stoppage time as Mile Oak won 2-1 at home to Midhurst & Easebourne. Scott Dormer had earlier cancelled out Joe Benn s opener. Southwick picked up their second win in three games in style as they thrashed Langney Wanderers. Andy McDowell and Ross Myers both scored hat-tricks for the hosts, with Ben Presslie also on target in the 7-2 win. Nathan Crabb had given Wanderers an early lead, with Paul Rogers on target late on. Bexhill United are up to fourth after they beat Billingshurst, 5-1. Craig Ottley scored twice, with further goals from Matt Cunnington, Wayne Giles and Kev Barden. Jamie Buckett scored for Seaford Town as they earned a great point at home to East Preston with a 1-1 draw, whilst Iain Jarvie, Josh Warner, Russell Shoebridge and Matthew Searle scored for Storrington as they beat Ringmer, 4-1. In the division s other game, Oakwood came from 2-0 down to draw at AFC Varndeanians. Tariq Richards and Josh Newman put the hosts in charge at the Withdean Stadium. However, Gerald Manville and Mo Shuga a scored in the second half to earn the visitors a point.

7 Marco Giambelardini scored twice for Bosham as they made it 8 wins from 8 at Rustington. Jake Lafferty and Bradley Miles completed the scoring in a 4-0 win. Roffey are up to second after they beat Rottingdean, 5-0. Harri Nourse scored a hat-trick, with Ben Chowney and Luke MacGregor also on target. Ferring s struggles continue after they were beaten 12-1 by Lancing United. Dan Meason scored twice, with Josie Stakim scoring a hat-trick. Tom Donnelly and Bradley Hunt also scored braces, with further goals from Grant Thetford, Sam Gunn and Mark Dixon. Nick Boutal scored a hat-trick for Montpelier Villa as they won 5-1 at Alfold. Okwi Momah and Wayne Bashford also got on the scoresheet. Nigel Smith denied Jarvis Brook all three points at Cowfold. Sam Saunders effort looked to give Brook all three points, but Smith struck in the third minute of added time to earn the hosts a point. Tom Bayley and John Phillips goals earned Sidlesham a point at home to Worthing Town Leisure. Chris Wiseman had put the visitors ahead, before the Sids turned it around. However, Steve Kirkham struck for Town to earn them a 2-2 draw. In the division s other game, James Rowland and Fraser Lawrence scored late in each half to earn Upper Beeding a 2-0 win at Clymping. 8 Money. I am sitting in front of Sky Sports News on Transfer Deadline Day, and I am baffled how transfers worked out in the twentieth century. Over one billion pounds has been spent by Premier League clubs over the summer. Am I the only one putting my hand up and saying that I wouldn t mind just 0.01% of that? That figure is only one hundred thousand pounds but what that sort of money can do for everyday people, who don t have the ability to knock a football into a net, is staggering. Indeed, each week Cristiano Ronaldo earns a breath-taking 274,000, which is an incredible 1,631 per hour 45p per second. That means that in an hour, the Portuguese star earns an average UK worker s monthly wage. Look at Rooney, he s netting 250k a week for running around a field but can these salaries be justified? Yet if you look at the kind of money that s drawn into the game, you might also understand how these figures become comprehendible. BskyB recently signed a deal with The FA worth 3.4bn, this finding its way to the clubs notwithstanding the millions generated from sponsorship for those clubs, the merchandise and then there s ticket revenue, so it s not too long before these figures begin to make some sense. After all, the players are the spectacle the fans come to see when all s said and done, right? Leicester City received less prize money than four other Premier League sides, despite finishing the season 10 points clear at the top of the table as champions. Arsenal, who leapfrogged rivals Tottenham to finish the season second in the league, are the highest earners thanks to being shown on TV more than any other side. The Gunners will receive 101m from the TV deal last season while Claudio Ranieri's Leicester side will take 93.3m despite their stunning campaign producing arguably the most fascinating season in English football history. Every Premier League side takes a flat 55m from the TV deal which is then boosted by merit payments for where they finish in the league plus money for every time they've been appeared on either BT Sport or Sky Sports. Each league position is worth 1,236,083, meaning Leicester collected 25m for winning the title with Arsenal scooping 23.7m. Every time a club is shown on TV they receive 750,000 plus a small additional revenue for being shown on Match of the Day. Leicester appeared on screen 15 times over the course of the season, providing them with 12.8m to take their total earnings to 93.3m. Arsenal however were screened live a staggering 27 times to boost their income by 21.8m to take their total earnings to 101m. Indeed, even Aston Villa - who finished bottom of the table - were given 66.2 million in prize money - the fact you are rewarded for having that sort of season remains a mystery. Some people, I for one, get tired of the FA coming out and telling the world how much of a great job they are doing at supporting the grassroots level of the sport. Why then, did a football club have to close its doors after 92 years after losing its Step Six status because it lacked a lock on a toilet door?

9 Rochdale Town were booted out of the North West Counties League in August and folded months later after an appeal to the FA was thrown out. It is incidents like these that let the game down, and whilst money does play quite a large role in football, in the end, the game itself is still at the forefront of the sport, and that is the part that should be supported. There are far too many volunteers who don t get enough recognition all over the country, so it s all good applauding Ronaldo as lifted the Euro 2016 trophy aloft in the summer, but we also need to take a moment to thank the gateman at a club playing in front of a few dozen people. Football is a community, and whilst they are at complete opposite ends of the spectrum they still represent the same cause doing their best. Many of the teams at the top level could very well play to an empty stadium and still make money, there indeed is a reason football at the top is so profitable. However, a club in the Southern Combination Football League would struggle to cope with the costs of paying officials and providing hospitality without its trusted fans. The beauty of the game itself and the way it captivates an audience is what makes it so special. Without the game, there would be no money to be made. The fact of the matter is, fans can stomach the massive amounts of money spent and earned in the sport when they witness the results. While owners invest in clubs as a business, it is hard to believe that they too are not captivated by the play they witness every week. Money may be the god to football s religion, but the fans are the followers, and if there is no faith in the game, than there is no money to be made. Thus in the end, the game itself is all that really matters. By Anthony Scott
