2 The Manager s Thoughts Good Afternoon and welcome to Bartholomew way, in particular I would like to extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters from Old Hastonians Football Club for today s SCFA Intermediate cup fixture. We hope everyone enjoys their brief stay with us today and we wish you all a safe journey home. It has been a disappointing two weeks for Roffey FC on the back of our first defeat against Jarvis Brook. With the lads chomping at the bit to get straight back to our winning ways we then had our game called off and had to wait another week to face Alfold in the cup. Injury s, holidays and the wait for International Clearance reduced the squad down to just 12 players, so it was great to be able to call up Ed Barnes from the Reserves and young Alex Barker from the Under 17 s. Both were excellent so I would have no hesitation in calling them into the first team again. Frustratingly we suffered a 1-0 defeat to Alfold. After having, in my opinion, around 75% of the possession and numerous chances we failed to hit the back of the net. All credit to Alfold who defended in large numbers but it is a concern that we couldn t break them down. Too many players under-performed and they need to bounce back for us this week in a big way. Moving onto more positive news and I am delighted to announce that we signed Dom Ozga from East Grinstead Town FC. Dom s a quality player who will bring size, strength and experience. I m anticipating that his arrival will give us the edge we need to return to our winning form. Also we finally received International Clearance for Dave Major who had signed previously. Dave will also bring something special, particularly in transition phases, so I am excited to get him involved. A big few weeks for us now but I have confidence as we are finally shaping up to be a league-challenging squad. 4 ALFOLD 1-0 ROFFEY: DIVISION TWO CHALLENGE CUP 19/11/2016 After having their home SCFA Intermediate Cup fixture postponed last week Roffey were back in action away at Alfold in the league cup. With 8 of the first team squad missing through injury or holiday it meant reserve team player Ed Barnes and 16 year old Alex Barker were called up to the first team squad. A great opportunity for both. Alfold have a fantastic set up at the Recreation Ground and the pitch was in great condition. This suited Roffey and the game got underway with Roffey enjoying some neat and comfortable possession. It wasn't long into the game that Alfold's game plan became clear, once the ball was presented back to Roffey, Alfold turned to get behind the ball and basically asked the question could Roffey break them down? The short answer was no. Roffey had some good chances, Jamie Wanstall had 2 shots well saved, Liam coughlan had a free kick tipped past the post and Gavin Fowler and Harri Nourse missed chances a piece in the first half. Alfold kept Dan Hallett in the Roffey half and he done a brilliant job of occupying the back four. On the 34th minute from Hallett's good work and one of the few times Alfold entered the Roffey box the ball was half cleared straight to Dom Withers, who hit the ball well and with 2 slight deflections the ball flew into the bottom corner past Aaron Jeal. 1-0 first real site of goal for Alfold. A few more chances came Roffey's way but combined with some great saves from keeper Ryan Mathews and poor finishing the score at half time was 1-0 Alfold. Second half the same pattern of play emerged. Alfold had one breakaway which where a shot from Hallett was well saved from Jeal. However ultimately Roffey looked to break down a formation. Roffey had a lot of the ball in front of the 9 defenders and a few chances fell to Jamie Wanstall again missed and Nourse also struggled to get a clear sight on goal. Dan Dunster hit the cross bar from fully 25 yards - when that happens you know it may not be your day - and probably the best chance fell to Gav Fowler when after good work from Ben Chowney, Fowler found himself unmarked and inside the 6 yard box, opening up his foot too much the ball went back across the face of goal. One of a few let offs for Alfold. The longer the game went on it felt as if Roffey could be playing until next Saturday and were not going to score. Even when they got past the Alfold wall they were not clinical. 16 year old Alex Barker replaced Ben Simester, Luke Macgregor replaced Ben Gardiner and Ed Barnes replaced Phil Awcock and Roffey also changed formation maybe a little too late but couldn't find a break through. Even keeper Jeal who was a spectator for most of the 90 minutes came up for corners and had a chance but missed. Time ebbed away and the full time whistle went. Roffey knocked disappointingly out. Ultimately Roffey had more than enough chances to win this game comfortably and are really disappointed to be out of the League Cup. Dunster, Coughlan and Macgregor when he came on dictated the game, but a sucker punch first half was to be the decider. Not to take anything away from Alfold, a great defensive performance, one a certain Mr Mourinho would of been proud of. They defended outstandingly well all afternoon and the game went without any incident. It does ask the question as to why in the league they sit near the bottom and can't produce this performance week in week out which they are clearly capable of! We wish them luck in the next round of the cup and for the rest of the season we are due there first game of 2017 where hopefully Roffey can improve their luck! As for Roffey a second defeat in two, however a reasonable performance with so many missing. They have to improve if they want to compete at the top of this league. Roffey are at home next in SCFA Intermediate Cup re arranged fixture against Old Hastonians. 5 ROFFEY UNDER 18 S RESULTS AND TABLE RECENT RESULTS JARVIS BROOK 4 3 ROFFEY SOUTHERN COMBINATION FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION TWO 05/11/2016 After 14 games without defeat so far this season Roffey finally gave up their unbeaten run which stretched back as far as April in the league to a very good and very physical Jarvis Brook side. Roffey went in to the game knowing Brook would be up for it as they were when they drew 4-4 with 10 man Roffey in August. Roffey will be disappointed in their showing but a 4-3 loss to a side that not many will take points off this season shows Roffey can compete even on off days. The game started all Brook as they constantly hit balls long down the never ending slope on their pitch to try and catch Roffey out over the top. To be honest this was dealt with quite well and it was actually a set piece that Brook got their breakthrough on 21 minutes. A poor free kick was deflected into the Roffey penalty area straight to the feet of Brook number 4 Anderson who couldn't miss. That sparked a bit of life into Roffey and they began to cope with the up hill task of getting back in the game (literally). Some great play from ben Chowney down the left meant he played a one two with Luke Macgregor and then Chowney was up ended in the box by a Brook centre half. A ridiculous tackle a clear foul but as every decision against Brook all afternoon was the referee was surrounded and heated disagreement followed. However the ref surprisingly gave the penalty which Harri Nourse dispatched 1-1 and momentum shift to Roffey. Adam Wicking then had a great effort saved and Gav Fowler hit the post. In what proved to be crucial right on half time another low cross was put into the Roffey box. Duncan Hirschfield who was excellent all afternoon got their first and put the ball past his own keeper in attempt to clear. 2-1 Brook half time. Roffey knew they'd under performed and started the second half running down the slope to attack and started winning second balls as attacking downhill was giving them the advantage as it had Brook. However Brook kept 3 players up top all afternoon and in a counter attack where a foul on a Roffey player went unpunished yet again by the referee, the ball was fired across the goal and tapped in at the back post for 3-1. Game over? Roffey introduced Liam Coughlan for Macgregor for his debut and went back to having possession and attacking Brook. A goal came from Jamie Wanstall after a Coughlan free kick, Wanstall headed into the far corner. Roffey with 10 minutes left sensed they good get something from the game and created some more chances. The best falling to Harri Nourse with the Brook goalkeeper pulling off a fantastic save. However with the 3 attackers still so high Roffey were vulnerable to a counter attack. Brooks 4th goal and ultimately the points came when yet another long ball was put up towards Roffey's defence. After a mistake defensively the ball rolled into the path of Brook number 9 30 yards from goal he accepted the gift and put the ball past Aaron Jeal Roffey had time to make it 4-3 after great play from Wanstall and Coughlan meant Coughlan scored on his debut. There was even chance to draw level but a header put agonisingly wide in the last moments of the game. 4-3 full time. Roffey didn't perform well in the first half and ultimately that cost them. Defensive mistakes have cost them in recent weeks also but this weekend they couldn't recover and it meant a first defeat of the season. Jarvis Brook will no doubt be in title mix up let alone the promotion places. They're organised, have a potent strike force and are very physical. But with Bosham, Sidlesham, Westfield, Lancing and Upper Beeding also involved in the battle for promotion places Roffey cannot afford too many more performances like this. Roffey now have a two week break from league action which again will mean they could find themselves well off the pace by the time they play Lancing United at home at the end of the month. Next up is East Sussex Premier League side Old Hastonians in the Sussex County Intermediate Cup.
