3 Good afternoon, and welcome to Walton Lane for this afternoon s Sussex County FA Intermediate Cup 3 rd Round tie against Bexhill United under 21 s. We extend a warm welcome to our visitors players, officials and supporters who have made the long journey along the coast for this afternoon s game, in addition to today s match referee, Mark Spencer from Wick - and hope they all enjoy their short stay here at Walton Lane. It had been a long time coming, but after month on the sidelines owing to two match postponements and two walkovers we finally got back in action on Saturday, although left Ferring with our first Division 2 defeat since Westfield on August 29. It was a game played out in difficult conditions, with Ben Blanshard levelling prior to Richard Ghent s winner. It s a dent in an otherwise impressive run of form, and we re well placed with the official Division 2 table still to show our anticipated three points from Ifield s no-show a fortnight ago, in what is becoming quite a bunched top-six - which is sure to take on many more twists and turns. It didn t take long for the mood to change however, with the club Christmas Party on Saturday evening at club sponsors, The Woodmancote Pub who we would like to thank for accommodating us, and making for another enjoyable evening. Am sure Andy s squad will be keen to put last week s blip in form quickly behind them with cup progress today the Intermediate Cup is one we ve never won, having been beaten twice in the final, so it s fair to say a run is on the list of season priorities. With today s game switched owing to two previous postponements at Bexhill, it s a great opportunity to progress into the last 16. Off the field, Life President, Dick Doncaster, has been nominated for a Chichester Observer Community Award in recognition of his 40 years service to the club a thoroughly deserved nomination, As many of you will know, Dick and his wife, Gerry have been long standing servants to the club, and seen us through some tough times for which we have much to thank them for. We hope they enjoy their evening at the finalists ceremony at Butlins, Bognor Regis, on December 14. We are delighted to welcome our new Sports Therapy team, Lee Jones and Scott Everley to the club. Both are currently studying at Portsmouth University Scott has experience in the Southern League with Uxbridge, and Lee brings sports massage and taping qualifications. We are extremely grateful to the University for answering our need. More good news in that the club has been successful in gaining 750 as part of Sussex FA s Growth Fund in lieu of our FA Charter Standard Status, development and retention of youth teams atunder 15 and 18 levels. In addition, a further 250 from the UK Power Networks sports fund has been gained to put towards training equipment for the under 15 s. Being voluntary run, this is all of course fantastic news - and alongside our valued local business sponsors, will go a long way in continuing a longer term sustainable model, with youth development at our core. The u15 s recently saw England u21 s 3-1 victory against Switzerland at the Amex Stadium, Brighton made possible through our FA Charter Standard status a great experience for the guys, who are the future of our club. Remember the clubhouse and bar is open, with hot and cold food/ drink and scores on the TV. Enjoy the game,

5 Southern Combination Football League Division 2 By Alan Price Bosham slipped to a disappointing defeat this week at a very blustery Glebelands, against a Ferring side in search of points to try and move away from the bottom half of the table and leave the reds management frustrated at how this one got away. The conditions were terrible with a very heavy pitch and a strong wind for both sides to contend with, but Bosham started brightly in their first game for several weeks, thanks to the recent inclement weather. Marco Giambelardini got through on goal after only six minutes but with keeper to beat, scooped his effort over the bar. Ferring took heart and a couple of minutes later, albeit against the run of play, sneaked into the lead in surprising circumstances. Piotor Szczepaniuk hit a speculative ball towards the Robins penalty area and the effort was suddenly ripped by a gust of wind and flew over the stunned, Kieran Magee, and into the back of the net. This was a real setback for the reds but to their credit they got straight back up from the blow and came back strongly to let Ferring know that Bosham weren t out of the tie just yet. The conditions were making things tough for both sides and Bosham were finding things increasingly awkward to make this tick and saw numerous opportunites to test keeper, Nick Taylor, go by time after time. Rossi Kay and Richard Ghent looked sharp for the blues and their pace was making life nervy for the reds defence and several good chances came and went before the break but with only one goal to show for their efforts Ferring went in content but still a little frustrated whereas Bosham could feel confident that things could change for the better in the second half. Indeed the reds got back level just ten minutes in when Ben Blanshard headed in from a Graham Dowden free kick. It was a deserved equaliser as the reds had started really strongly, now with the wind at their backs but, sadly, that was as good as it got for the robins as the Ferring went on a smash and grab raid to come away with the points. Late in the half Ghent saw a free kick somehow avoid all attention and nestle in the bottom corner leaving Bosham players aghast at what had just happened. Bosham threw everything but the kitchen sink at Ferring in the time remaining but the blues held on for a rain soaked three points. Ironically Bosham are still well placed in the table with only six points separating the top six as it stands. 13 by Tony Incenzo of talksport Radio IN THE BEGINNING I ve been watching Non-League football on a regular basis since I was 10 years old. What I like most is that the players, club officials and supporters are there for the love of the game. The true spirit of football exists at Non-League level. I grew up in North-West London and I was taken by my family to see my local club QPR as a child in the 1970 s. I ve always supported the R s, but when they were playing away from home I started going to see my local Non-League clubs Hendon primarily, but also Finchley, Barnet and Edgware Town. GROUNDHOPPER From there, I decided to visit every Non- League club in London as my groundhopping bug began. By the time I was 17, I had visited all 92 Football League grounds and I visited all the Scottish League grounds whilst still a teenager. Since then, I ve continued travelling all around the country to visit Non-League clubs. Earlier this season, I chalked up my 2,000th ground at FC United of Manchester. WORLD RECORD One of the best groundhops was being part of a world record in March I joined 250 other groundhoppers to watch five matches at five different football grounds in one day in the Central Midlands League. This is listed in the Guinness Book of Records and we received certificates confirming the world record at the end of the fifth game. INSIDE PRISON! In December 2011, I set about watching a match inside Feltham Prison in Middlesex. This featured a team called Phoenix FC, who had to play all their fixtures at home (for obvious reasons!) as inmates of the Young Offender Institution at Feltham. I received special permission by to attend a fixture, but I was told not to bring a phone or a camera with me. I was instructed to arrive in the main car park along with the match referee and the visiting players from Hanworth Villa Vets. We were met by members of the prison staff who escorted us all in together via an airport-style metal detector, a body search, numerous locked gates and along a path to the changing rooms. This process took 45 minutes. After the players and ref got changed, we were then accompanied through more locked gates out to the playing area. A high mesh fence with barbed wire on top surrounded the football pitch. There were dug-outs along one touchline and I watched the match from there as the only spectator. THE FUTURE By going to FC United, I re-completed visits to the top 16 divisions of English football down to Non-League step 4. Then at step 5 I need 30 grounds and another 81 at step 6. There are endless possibilities at step 7 and below. Also, I ve been to 35 European countries plus the USA for football so it would be nice to visit more countries.
