3 Good afternoon, and welcome to Walton Lane for today s Sussex County League Division Three match against Langney Wanderers. We extend a warm welcome to our visitors and their supporters who have made the 58 mile journey along the coast for this afternoon s game, and to match referee, Richard Sargeant, from Bognor Regis. We keptalive ourtitleambitionwitha3-1 home win against Billingshurst on a chilly Saturday last weekend, thanks to goals from Jake Lafferty, James Wilson (pen) andadavestoreyshotfrom30yards. However today's long awaited fixture against last season's Division 3 champions in Langney will surely represent one of our stiffest tasks of the campaign to date - with the return visit back to Eastbourne stillforustomake. Langney suffered a somewhat surprise defeat against Mid Sussex outfit, Cuckfield Rangers last week in the quarter finals of the Sussex Intermediate Cup which would have been a blow to a side who like ourselves, continue to chase honours in the League and Cup. Cuckfield themselves were on an unbeaten run in their League, so what the neutral sees on paper probably doesn't tell the full story. Langney have had a fairly meteoric rise since their formation in only 2010/11, growing from a Sunday League outfit to winning the County League Division 3 title last season. They have ambition to progress further on success this term, and subsequent erection of floodlights and a stand for which the club have received planning permission. Langney have a number of games in hand on ourselves with the only blot on their copy book an 5-1 reverse at Ifield in September. They also boast the goal scoring exploits of striker Shane Saunders - the former Peacehaven & Telscombe man is the Divisions' top marksman with 17 to his name this season. With Sidlesham to face both home and away while we host Sids next week (Feb 14) - it should make for an intriguing end to the campaign. We will be without Gaffa, Andy Probee this afternoon with our player/ boss servingouthisonematchban. Left back Graeme Dowden is also likely to be absent as he is tying up his transfer to our Division 1 neighbours, Chichester City. After a number of years service at Walton Lane - including being part of the 2009/10 Division 3 championship winning side - Dowd's has decided to test himself at the higher level and goes with both our blessing and thanks. He'll link-up once again with striker, Kieran Hartley, who left for Oaklands earlier in the season. Frank Antony's reserves visit Roffey this afternoon in the West Division, and may include Andrew McCrossan in the squad - who was set to complete histransfer from Wick& Barnham United this week. Meanwhile, John Stead's under 16's will try to go again tomorrow after the postponement of their Invitation Cup semi-final against Barnham Trojans Puma's at Aldingbourne. Kick off is 11am at Oliver's Meadows and all support is welcome! 5 SUSSEX COUNTY FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 3 By ALAN PRICE A fifteenth goal of the season from striker, Dave Storey, finally saw off a determined Billingshurst side at Walton Lane this week to extend the reds lead at the top of the Division Three standings with Langney Wanderers waiting in the wings for their visit on Saturday. On a bitterly cold afternoon, the game started quietly with few chances to speak of. The visitors were a young team, intent on making a statement against the league leaders and Bosham would need to be on top of their game if they were to get the result they craved. It took twenty minutes but eventually the reds made a period of pressure finally tell to take a deserved lead. Jake Lafferty took advantage of a somewhat lack lustre free kick from Marco Giambelardini, to sneak in a snap up the ball in front of keeper, Tom Betts, and fire strongly into the back of the net with Betts rooted to the spot. The half continued and the blues startedtofindtheirfeetandputsome pressure on the reds back line. Returning Nick Edgington was a rock atthebackandnothinggotthroughto threaten the Bosham goal and the reds went into the break with a deserved lead intact. IntothesecondhalfandBoshamwere caught cold early on as Billingshurst grabbed an equaliser to draw level in sensational style. JakeChadwickfiredinacrossfromthe right and Nathan Stepney produced a towering header at the back post to score in the corner. The blues tails were up but Bosham regrouped and came back strongly. Thequestionwascouldtheredsfinda way to win in what remained of the game and, strangely, Billingshurst gifted Bosham an opportunity when Edgingtonwasupendedintheboxand a penalty awarded by referee, Dave Barnard. James Wilson stepped up and comfortably beat Betts from the spot to restore the Bosham lead. With time running out and the blues tiring a third goal was, seemingly, coming and with minutes left it duly arrived from the right boot of top scorer Storey. Betts was forced wide of his box to clear theball but inhacking it out only found Storey around thirty yards out and he needed no second invitation to shoot, expertly, into the empty net. 21 By BOB PROBEE The Club s first eleven continued the campaign in the same vein as thepreviousseasonandinthefirsthalfof the season, the only points dropped were away to Sidlesham 3-4; and draws with Pagham 2-2 (the first match played on the host s new ground at Nyetimber Lane) and 3-3 at Batchmere. Local rivals Chidham were visitors in the first round of the Chichester Charity Cup and were beaten 6-1. Again the reserves enjoyed mixed fortunes. They did however create a record for the second string when they defeated Felpham Another high point was the first round Bognor Charity Cup 5-4 home victory against Aldingbourne, a dominant force in the Bognor League. The cup run was short-lived however as the reserves lost 1-4 at Sidlesham in the second round. After Christmas the first team renewed acquaintances with Selsey losing 4-7 on 10 th January. The following week saw their maintained presence in the Chichester Charity Cup by winning 5-2 at Whyke Villa in the second round. On 21 st February the Robins firsts created a record in defeating Southbourne by thirteen goals to one. Bosham were again defeated in the semifinal of the Chichester Charity Cup this time against South Bersted by 3-5 at the Police Ground in Chichester. The Chichester & District League, to commemerate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, were presented with the Bareham trophy by Mr W J Voke of Chichester City FC. Originally the trophy had been presented to Chichester City by Mr Bareham, former landlord of the Royal Arms(Punch House) and President of Chichester City for competition by invited clubs of not higher than West Sussex League status. However the league decided that there was insufficient time for all clubs to compete and restricted it to those clubs who had not won either their league or Charity cup. Therefore eight clubs including Bosham competed for the Coronation Cup at the end of the season. Research by Kevin Long
