2 HARTLEY WINTNEY FC CLUB HISTORY artley Wintney Football Club was founded in 1897 and played in an area adjacent to the village's golf and cricket clubs. In 1953, the club moved to its H present ground in Green Lane, known as 'The Memorial Ground'. A pavilion was erected and the team played in the Basingstoke League and, later, in the Aldershot League. In 1973, Glynn Howell was appointed Manager. In his six year reign, the team won the Aldershot Senior League three times in succession, and the Aldershot Senior Cup. After several seasons in the Aldershot Senior League, Hartley were admitted to the Combined Counties League, which replaced the Surrey Senior League. After the first couple of seasons and two changes of management, the club appointed Ian Bedford as Manager. Once again an influx of senior players brought Hartley success. Within his three years in management, they gained trophies including the League Title ( ) and Runners Up ( ), Aldershot Senior Cup Winners ( ), and George Allen Cup Winners ( ). They were also Runners Up in the League Cup ( ) and Aldershot Senior Cup ( ). During this period a new Clubhouse was opened. David Willoughby, the then Secretary & Treasurer, and Bill Mitchell, the then club Chairman and now President, devoted exceptional hours in the em- bryo stages of this venture. Further invest- ments around this time included floodlights, new changing rooms and covered seating. In under man- ager Mike Scott, the club gained promotion from Divi 1 of the Combined Counties League, but ended in relegation by a narrow margin. Under manager and assistant Pete Gray and John Condon, the first team rallied, finishing 5th in CCL Div 1 in Coach Louis King took the reigns as manager when Pete Gray stepped down, guiding the team to 7th in CCL Div 1 in A management team of ex-basingstoke Town and Oxford United striker, Neville Roach, Assistant Mick Wollen and Coach Scott Tarr took charge for and it was a notable season, with the club achieving promotion back to the Combined Counties League Premier Division. Hartley also had a fine FA Cup run that took them to the Third Qualifying Round, but the euphoria of the cup run and promotion was dampened even before the champagne bubbles had burst, when the coaching staff and almost the entire squad left for Thatcham Town. For the season, ex-millwall defender, Dave Tuttle, was given the summer to prepare a new squad. However, a string of poor results led to a second change in management in less than 4 months, with 24 year-old ex-basingstoke Town and Hartley striker, Ben Dillon, given his first managerial position. Once again there was an almost total outflow of players and Ben, with assistants Jason Minton and Joe Lawler, set about rebuilding the squad, but by this time with Hartley well and truly set adrift at the bottom of the table. Their enthusiasm, 2

3 PROUD HAMPSHIRE CLUB SINCE 1897 belief and the introduction of a talented group of players quickly restored the spirit around the club. In what became known as the season of the club's 'Great Escape', the Row s place in the CCL Premier was secured against all the odds after a truly remarkable second half of the season. Dillon further strengthened the squad, with Steve Saunders and Dan Brownlie brought in to the coaching setup alongside Jason and Joe. The season started well and there were wins in the FA Cup to setup a home tie in the 4th Qualifying Round for the first time in the club's history, losing out to an in-form Daventry Town in front of a crowd of over 1,000. The cup run took its toll on the league form but the club finished a creditable 7th in the CCL Premier Division. A new Club crest was commissioned ahead of the season, with a design that is modern but holds true to the traditions of a village club founded over 100 years ago. Designed by Philippa Bell, the current crest incorporates several elements of historical significance. With the village recorded in the 13th century under the name of Hertleye Wynteneye, meaning "the clearing in the forest where the deer graze by Winta's island", the crest shows a tree and a stag, as well as the rose emblem of the Club's home county, Hampshire. The Club's nickname of 'The Row' is taken from 'Hartley Row', a former hamlet within Hartley Wintney. The nickname and the year in which the Club was founded are also incorporated in the crest saw the club consolidate its place in the CCL Premier Division, finishing a comfortable 9th. Dillon stepped down at the end of the season and Dan Brownlie and Anthony Millerick were appointed as Joint First Team Managers for , with Joe Lawler remaining part of the coaching setup, and Luke Tuffs coming in as First Team Coach while continuing as Youth Team Manager. It was a very eventful After a memorable FA Cup win away at Merthyr Town in the Second Qualifying Round, Hartley battled back from 2-0 down to 2-2 away at Conference South Eastbourne Borough, only to be beaten by a goal struck deep into injury time. In the FA Vase, Hartley Wintney broke a longstanding club record by reaching the 5th Round Proper. In front of a sell-out 1,300 at Green Lane, eventual finalists Hereford proved too strong, but the Row went on to top the CCL Premier Division for most of the season and claimed the league title, finishing 10 points clear on 106 points, with a goal difference of +87 and having lost just four league games all season. Promotion, however, was denied due to ground grading issues. Faced with attempting to achieve back-to-back title wins and put in place the substantial ground improvements that would allow progression, the season under co-managers Dan Brownlie and Anthony Millerick, and coach Luke Tuffs, was extraordinary. The Row topped the Combined Counties League Premier Division for the entire season, reached the semi-finals of the Hampshire Senior County Cup and the final of the Aldershot Senior Cup, and secured the required ground grading to allow the Row to take their place in the Southern League South, making it to Step 4 of the football pyramid for the first time. And to top off a wonderful , Luke Tuffs Youth team won the Hampshire FA Youth Cup against a strong Aldershot Town U18. 3

4 HARTLEY WINTNEY FC CLUB HISTORY The team took life at Step 4 in their stride, helped by the consistency provided by an unchanged management team and settled squad, and the season was to prove even more remarkable than the previous campaign. The Row sat within the top four for much of the season, never dropping below 8th. They set down a marker in the FA Cup, beating local rivals Basingstoke Town in a replay at Green Lane. Town later responded by signing Hartley's top goalscorer and club captain, Sam Argent. Argent's departure was a huge setback, but the management team responded by bringing in Rowan Vine, the charasmatic ex-professional. Vine restored belief in both the team and the supporters; it was an inspired signing. The Row embarked on their first FA Trophy campaign, which included wins against Gosport Borough and Farnborough FC before going out 0-2 in the First Round Proper against eventual finalists, Bromley FC. Vine joined the management team at one of his former clubs battling relegation late in the season. Losing Rowan seemed a massive blow at a critical point, but again the management team made an inspired signing. Nic Ciardini joined from Farnborough and was instrumental in keeping the momentum going. Hugely important was also the strong central defensive partnership that had grown during the second half of the season between Jack Ball and Liam Eagle. A Play-Off place was secured and the Row won the semi-final against AFC Dunstable 2-0. Cambridge City had triumphed at Hayes & Yeading FC in the other semi. In front of a crowd of over 700 at Green Lane, a tense game was decided by a single goal scored by Ciardini and so the Row clinched promotion and made it to the Southern Premier at Step 3; a truly outstanding achievement. The final season highlight was in lifting the Aldershot Senior Cup with a 4-1 win against Eversley & California FC The Club heads into new territory in the Southern League once again as it takes its place proudly in the Evo-Stik League South, Premier South for this season, having negotiated the steep climb from Step 5 to Step 3 in just two seasons. A revised management team is at the helm, with Dan Turkington stepping in as co -manager alongside Anthony Millerick, and there is a new and experienced coaching setup under Head Coach Luke Tuffs, with Sam Rafique, Mark Hurst and Keith Benjamin joining the background team. We also welcome a new First Team Shirt Sponsor. 6 WELCOME TO HARTLEY WINTNEY FC EVO-STIK PREMIER SOUTH 1 st December 2018 vs Chesham United FC Kick Off: 3.00pm Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen and welcome to the Memorial Ground for this Evo-Stik League South, Premier South Division fixture. Our opponents today are Chesham United FC. To their players, officials and supporters we extend a warm welcome and hope you enjoy your short stay with us today. Our visitors, nicknamed 'The Generals', are currently 21st in the table with 12 points from 16 games, having had a difficult start to the season. However, they come to us on the back of two league wins out of three, including a 2-1 triumph over Frome Town and a very impressive 5-0 win away at Dorchester Town. With a new management team in place, stability appears to have been quickly restored. We return to home league action today after a mixed couple of weeks of results. After our defeat here against Met Police, the club forum pages were awash with questions of what was happening. It is good to see that people want to air their views and it is something we should actively encourage. The feeling being conveyed was that all was not well and that our performances left a lot to be desired. It was with this backdrop that I made the trip to Tiverton on Saturday and, if I m honest, I wasn t expecting us to get anything out of the game. How wrong I 6 was. The boys put in a marvellous team performance and thoroughly deserved to share the spoils. The team spirit was excellent and to a man they deserve a pat on the back for their efforts. Can't let the day pass without mentioning it was great to see Les Kinkaid, a star of Hartley past. This spirit and resilience from the Tiverton game was carried through to the midweek local derby against Basingstoke Town, and again the boys put in a marvellous performance and thoroughly deserved the three points. I don t recall us having beaten Basingstoke on their turf in any league or cup game in our history - Vinty can go back 50 years and he too couldn t recall it - so quite an achievement, though the most important thing was the three points on the night. The Reserves went down 3-2 in the league at home to Abbey Rangers in what sounds an exciting but ultimately frustrating encounter on Saturday. Our goals came from Gracious Musonda and Ricky Hogsden. Today they are away in the Suburban League at Leverstock Green. Excitement too for the A Team who kept up their 100% league record and notched their 9th win with victory at home to second placed Frimley Select. A nine goal thriller saw them win out 5-4, the goals coming from Ryan Thorpe (2), Aaron Jessavala, Tom Flanders and Harry Armstrong. Football admin and organisation-wise, we still need volunteers to help out the already beleaguered band of helpers, who I can assure you are stretched to almost breaking point! If you can help in any way then please step forward. Our survival rests on us all battling

8 VOICES FROM THE DUGOUT Afternoon all, and to all HWFC followers, thank you for your support and attendance at today s match. Also a warm welcome to our visitors, Chesham Utd. to our travelling squad last weekend. We would also like to thank those clubs, both Farnham Town and Knaphill, for assisting and being understanding. We are jubilant after convincingly beating our nearest neighbours Basingstoke Town on Tuesday night 3-1. This result came on the back of another good performance away at Tiverton last weekend, where we shared the spoils 1-1. This has certainly put a spring in our step and made our thoughts less morose after the dismal display vs Met Police last home outing. Form and a string of consistent performances were something we as a team had been missing over the last six weeks or so. This led us to really look deep into the mechanics and setup of our team. No one individual, or one certain area on the pitch, was to solely blame for this dip in form and results. A closer inspection into the methods that the players collectively use to obtain the style and characteristic of how we want them to play, was paramount to the hopeful turn around in performances and form. Early signs are positive and we are really hopeful to keep this going, onwards. However, we are not going to allow ourselves to over indulge in this early show of a return to the form we have come to expect. The playing squad has been stretched to its capacity of late and we had to recall loan players to cover injuries and knocks obtained in recent games and training. Notably Jayden Englefield from Farnham Town, who played the full 90 vs Tiverton and did really well. Thank you also to Kye Nash (also Farnham Town) and George Frise (Knaphill) who added 8 The knocks and niggles obtained were all minor with exception of the injury on Matty Evans, who will sadly miss the next few months with his. More news, sees us still looking to add a further few to our squad of players. We will keep you updated in due course. Please, though, welcome to the club Marley Ridge from Havant and Waterlooville. Marley played in the derby game on Tuesday vs Basingstoke Town and thoroughly impressed all around him. We love his energy and tenacity that he brings to the table. Another returning welcome is due to Steve Duff. You will all be familiar with Duffy and we all hope he can balance the work and play scenario that saw him unable to commit in pre-season. Let s hope for another positive performance from the lads today and a result to match. Is it too early to wish you all a Merry Christmas? Maybe, but thank you for your continued support of us and the lads. Turks and Millers

14 THE PAPERS SAID: MET POLICE Hartley Wintney v Met Police, Evo-Stik League South, Premier South. Tuesday 20th Nov '18 Report by David Graham Hartley Wintney lost their second home league match of the season, going down to a heavy defeat against a competent Metropolitan Police side. However, if law was applied to football then there would be a huge Court Appeal for injustice against the Met's first goal. The match started in cautious style but the first effort on target, on 18 minutes, resulted in a goal for the visitors. A free kick from Hartley into the Met's box saw a huge clearance up field. The assistant referee appeared frozen on the spot at the half way line, unaware that Max Blackmore was the only player in the Row half, with a 10 yard start on the Hartley defence. To everyone's amazement, the offside flag was not raised and Blackmore ran on and applied a cool finish. (0-1) However, if the first goal could be said to be injustice, the second one two minutes later was criminal. Hartley were guilty as charged with some extremely loose play in central midfield. This enabled Ethan Chislett room to fire a shot at goal. Adam Desbois in the Row goal pulled off a good save but Hartley were unable to fully clear their lines and, in the ensuing scramble around the goalmouth, Jack Mazzone shot home from close range. (0-2) Hartley came into the game and on 36 minutes were unlucky. A free kick from Josh Webb found the head of Jack Ball and his effort saw Met keeper, Charlie Burns, fingertip the ball onto the underside of the crossbar and away. The Row held an edge and on 42 minutes a precision pass from Josh Webb found Rowan Vine clear. Met 14 keeper Burns was quickly off his line and pulled off a good save. On the stroke of half time, the Met added a third. A very soft free kick was awarded some 25 yards from goal. The impressive Chislett took the kick and his effort found the net. (0-3) HT: Hartley 0 Met Police FC 3 The Row came out for the second half in slumber mode and immediately gave possession to Max Blackmore, who ran on and brought out a good save from Desbois. Within a minute, some loose play in defence gave the Met another chance and Mazzone's effort from the edge of the box found Desbois well positioned to save. Hartley improved but were unable to make any impression until the 57th minute. A run from midfield by Rowan Vine created a chance for Nathan Smart, whose effort deflected wide. Five minutes later, Josh Webb fed Ross Cook who shot well wide of target. On 71 minutes, Mazzone created a chance for himself and his parting shot went just past the post. Three minutes later the Row had a real let off when Nesta Guiness-Walker fashioned a shot and saw Desbois parry well. From the rebound, Blackmore shot over from point blank range. The fourth goal arrived on 82 minutes. A slick move down the left saw Chislett feed Mazzone, who in turn set up Luke Robertson and he scored with a shot from the edge of the box. (0-4) The latter stages of the match saw Hartley put together some decent moves. They were rewarded in added time with a good goal from the best move of the evening. Nick Hutchings fed Nic Ciardini down the left wing.

15 THE PAPERS SAID: TIVERTON TOWN Ciardini delivered a perfect cross and Liam Eagle headed in at the back post. An evening where the Row were beaten by a more polished team. Many Row players were simply not at the top of their game. [D Graham] FT: Hartley 1 Met Police FC 4 Attendance: 166 HARTLEY WINTNEY: Adam Desbois, Jacques Kpohomouh, Louie Paget, Jack Ball, Liam Eagle, Tyron Smith (c), Josh Webb, Rowan Vine, Nathan Smart. Subs: Samuel Williams, John Gilbert, Bayley Mummery, Oliver Knight, Tom Nyama David spoke with Dan Turkington. "We just did not perform well. The first goal was a real body blow, with the player looking well offside, but we didn't create enough chances this evening. "Our defending for a couple of the goals could and should have been much better." Tiverton Town v Hartley Wintney Evo-Stik League South, Premier South. Saturday 24th Nov 2018 Report by Kevin O'Byrne Hartley Wintney made the 260 mile round trip across to mid Devon for the second time this season, having suffered a heavy defeat at Tiverton in the 15 FA Trophy replay a few weeks earlier. The Row arrived on the back of a dip in form which had seen them pick up just three points from their last seven league games, with a particularly disappointing defeat coming last Tuesday at home to Met Police. The Hartley squad had an unfamiliar line-up; no new names but several absentees from the team defeated on Tuesday night. There was a start for exciting young winger, Jayden Englefield, with promising youngsters George Frise and Kye Nash on the bench. Striker Michael Campbell is still recovering from injury but was on the bench, and there was a welcome return to the squad for centre-back Steve Noakes. The first action, 3 minutes into the game, saw the Row's Tyron Smith deliver a free kick into the Tivvy box which was eventually cleared by rightback, Josh Key. At the other end, Row fullback Jacques Kpohomouh made a hash of his attempted clearance and the Row were fortunate that Tivvy centre-forward, Tom Bath, was unable to capitalise on the mistake. Row 'keeper, Adam Desbois, pulled off a superb save on 12 minutes when Cameron Allen picked out Tiverton's prolific goalscorer, Levi Landricombe, whose volley was tipped over the bar. The same two players combined five minutes later when Allen released Landricombe. He took it on himself but fired wide from the edge of the area. The visitors had to sustain some pressure but exerted some of their own. Nic Ciardini's cross was palmed away by Tivvy 'keeper, Liam Armstrong, and Englefield, following up, was unable to find the target. A good spell of Hartley pressure was eventually relieved, and when the home side won a corner on

16 THE PAPERS SAID: TIVERTON TOWN the half hour, it led to the opening goal. A Levi Landricombe free kick was headed away for a corner. Landricombe took the corner and Jamie Price's flicked header put Tiverton ahead on 31 minutes. [1-0] Hartley responded well, Jayden Englefield going on a terrific run and exchanging quick one-two passes with Romario Hart before unleashing a shot that flew narrowly wide. Just before the half-time whistle, Tivvy's Ben Mammola was booked for a foul on Hart, and captain Jamie Price was also cautioned for something he said. HT: Tiverton Town 1-0 Hartley Row 'keeper Desbois was the first called into action, three minutes into the second half. He rose well to palm away an Allen cross, but it fell into a dangerous area and the visitors were relieved to see Levi Landricombe fire wide. Hartley then had a good spell, winning three corners in succession, and although unable to make them count, their tenaciousness paid off on 63 minutes when, from another Ty Smith corner, Jack Ball stole in at the back post and chested the ball in from close range. [1-1] Hartley were now exerting good pressure and, minutes after the equaliser, Tivvy 'keeper Armstrong raced out to gather a risky back header and clattered into Romario Hart. Fortunately for the home side, the offence occurred on the edge of the area and the free kick came to nothing. The game was getting more stretched, with both sides pushing for the winner. Tivvy's Michael Landricombe, brother of Levi, played a great through ball, but Tom Bath failed to read the pass and Desbois was able to gather easily. Then on 79 minutes, Levi Landricombe's header towards goal was wayward but fell to Tivvy left back, Callum Hall, and he blazed over. Play was end to end going into the final minutes, with the Row looking the more likely to find a winner. Another Ty Smith corner caused Tiverton's defence Jack Ball scoring the equaliser at Tiverton Pic: Viv Curtis 16

17 THE PAPERS SAID: TIVERTON TOWN problems, but Jack Ball flicked his header just over the bar. Ben Mammola did very well to deal with a Louie Paget delivery, then play switched to the other end and Tom Bath played Levi Landricombe in on goal, but the usually dependable striker fired over with only Desbois to beat. As the game moved past the 90 minutes, there was still one last chance for Hartley to find the winner, but a free kick was curled wide. The final whistle saw the Row travel back with a much deserved point from a gritty, encouraging and spirited performance that will have helped them shrug off their recent dip in form. FT: Tiverton Town 1-1 Hartley Attendance: 211 Tiverton Town: Liam Armstrong, Josh Key, Callum Hall, Jamie Price (c), Ben Mammola, Tom Gardner, Scott Rogers, Michael Landricombe, Tom Bath, Levi Landricombe, Cameron Allen Subs: Jordan Rogers, Harrison Davis, Max Smallcombe, Josh Wadham, George Rogers Hartley Wintney: Adam Desbois, Jacques Kpohomouh, Louie Paget, Jack Ball, Nathan Smart, Tyron Smith, Jack French, Josh Webb, Romario Hart, Nic Ciardini (c), Jayden Englefield Subs: George Frise, Kye Nash, Michael Campbell, Steve Noakes 17

23 THE NLP COLUMN This week s NLP programme column was written by Adam Ellis Martin Gray found himself back in football at Ebac Northern League Division One side Shildon after his departure from York City earlier this season. Heads were turned by the 47-year-old s decision to make the drop three levels lower. The power of persuasion can be the basis for new beginnings. If a chairman s persuasive talents can wrap its arms around a manager or coach s gut feeling, as was the case with Gray, then who are we to argue against it? Here are three other instances of the past and present where managers have made moves few could have predicted. Kevin Nicholson Mousehole: From the National League with Torquay United last season, to the new surroundings of South West Peninsula League outfit Mousehole AFC. A drop from Step 1 to Step 7, but the Seagulls are a club who have no intentions of standing still, according to head of football operations, Adam Fletcher. UEFA A Licence-holder Nicholson has proved quite the catch for the fishing port town based in west Cornwall. Tony Adams - FK Gabala: This was no high and dry decision by the Arsenal great, who followed his sacking as Portsmouth manager with a move to the former Soviet Republic of Azerbaijan and top flight side FK Gabala. His arrival at the one-time champions of Azerbaijan was heralded as a landmark moment to boost the Azerbaijan Premier League s reputation, but results didn t come consistently as Gabala were left to bide their time with mid-table finishes. After leaving the club, Adams then returned in 2014 as sporting director and his recruitment saw the team post the their biggest points total in eight years 23 when they finished third. For the next two seasons, Gabala couldn t crack the glass ceiling and would saddle consecutive third-place finishes with cup runs which fell at the final hurdle. Adams was appointed as manager of La Liga side Granada with the objective of staving off relegation. But the damage had already been done as Adams defensive nous wasn t enough to overturn a minus 45 goal difference. Sven Goran Eriksson Notts Co.: A year after managing Manchester City, backed by the mega wealth of Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed, the former England boss was lured to League Two Notts County as sporting director. In one of British football s most extreme cases of shady ownership, the takeover would become part of a wider investigation into the legitimacy of businessman Russell King. Proclaiming to have bought the rights to North Korea s gold, coal and iron ore mining operations, King was the head of a company worth $2trillion: all the money in the world to help Sven take the Magpies from League Two to the Premier League. And the Swede was totally sold on the idea he could do just that, reportedly travelling to Pyongyang to visit North Korean dignitaries. But all was not as it seemed and King was embroiled in the investigation for fraud, the club ran up debts of 7million before being sold for 1 to local businessman Ray Tew. Eriksson s 7 months at the club were at an end and the Swede later admitted the vanishing act had left him stewing in

28 CHESHAM UNITED FC CLUB HISTORY The year 2017 marked the centenary of the formation of Chesham United Football Club, following the merger of Chesham Town FC (who were founder members of the Southern League in 1894 when still known as just Chesham FC) and Chesham Generals (who took their name from the General Baptist Church in Chesham Broadway). Relative success in the following years paled into insignificance following the FA Amateur Cup run of 1967/68 when, against all the odds, little Chesham United went all the way from the Preliminary Round to the final of the FA Amateur Cup, finally losing 1-0 to Leytonstone in front of a 54,000 Wembley crowd. At a time when the population of Chesham was just 18,000 people, the club sold 22,000 tickets. The club went into turmoil on May 3rd 1983 when the main stand burned down. A new stand was officially opened with the visit of a Graham Taylor Watford side in Season 1987/88 marked the centenary year of non-league football in the town of Chesham, an achievement commemorated with a match against a full strength Arsenal side on 18th August In 1991 the club won the Isthmian League Division One title, and also reached the final of the inaugural Loctite Cup but lost to Bishops Stortford on penalties. In October 1992, the club went to the very top of the Isthmian league after a famous win at Enfield, and stayed ahead of the pack until the end of the season, being crowned Champions on the last day after a 4-0 win over Dulwich Hamlet. Witnessed by an average home gate of just short of 1,000, the season also saw the arrival of ex-liverpool star Mark Lawrenson. However the season ended in disappointment when promotion to the Conference National was denied because 28 the club could not afford the necessary ground improvements. Since those days the club has been through many managers, including ex- England Internationals Graham Roberts and Luther Blissett, and literally hundreds of players, including a stint with Bruce Grobbelaar between the sticks. In the early 2000s the club again had an eye on promotion to the Conference as Bob Dowie led a strong Chesham side to 6th in the Ryman Premier, possibly an under achievement when considering the resources at his disposal. The team that year included Wayne Andrews and Fitz Hall, both of whom went on to enjoy professional careers in the higher echelons of football. Two years later and the club were once again relegated back to Division One. With re-structuring on the horizon, the 2003/04 season was all about finishing in the top six. After an indifferent start, the team climbed up the table to eventually take 4th spot in the Ryman Division One (North) and earn a place in the Southern League Premier Division. United's first year in the Southern League was certainly adventurous. At times they looked title contenders, then flirted with relegation and in the end were happy to finish in mid-table. The following summer the true price of years of over-achieving came to light. Nearly two decades of wealthy Chairmen helping to fund the club was over and it was time for the Generals to stand on their own feet, a task that proved too much. By February 2006 the club was truly on its knees. The front pages of local papers were highlighting the sorry plight of the club that had seen so much. A public meeting was called at the Town Hall to "Save Chesham United" - it was a last desperate throw of the dice

29 CHESHAM UNITED FC CLUB HISTORY The sorry tale had a happy ending. A local businessman, Charles Manchester, read the stories, visited The Meadow, showed an interest and helped get the club back on its feet. His intention was always to hand over the club to its supporters and he gradually brought more members of the Chesham United Supporters' Trust onto the main club board. Fittingly, after four years at the helm, he was able to stand down at the end of the 2009/10 season with promotion back to the Southern League Premier Division secured and the club on a stable footing. The club's financial position was further improved following a takeover of the club by businessman Roger Payne in This takeover has allowed Chesham to consistently challenge for promotion. Following relegation to the Southern League South & West Division in 2006, Chesham were transferred to the Midlands Division after a single season. In 2007/08 United finished 6th and missed out on the play-offs on goal difference, but in 2008/09 finished 5th, but lost in the play-off semi-finals to two late goals at Nuneaton Town, having led for much of the game. In 2009/10 a fourth place finish was enough to reach the play-offs again. A 1-0 victory away at Burnham set up a final against Slough Town with a crowd of 1,115 witnessing a 4-0 victory at the Meadow to secure promotion. Consolidation in the Southern Premier was the main aim for 2010/11, but Chesham finished 6th, having been in the play-off race for much of the campaign. They achieved a 4th place finish in the 2011/12 season, losing in the play-off semi-finals to AFC Totton. In the 2012/13 season Chesham reached the FA Trophy Second Round, whilst in the league were unbeaten in their last 17 league games to finish 3rd, before losing to Hemel Hempstead Town in the play-offs. The club were able to build on this in 2013/14, pushing eventual champions Hemel Hempstead Town all the way in the title race, but ultimately had to settle for a place in the play-offs. After beating Stourbridge 2-1 at The Meadow in the 29 play-off semi-final, Chesham lost 3-1 to St Albans City in front of a crowd of 2,960, the largest seen at The Meadow for many years. However a number of players left the club in the following close season, and a revamped squad finished 11th. The 2015/16 season saw history made as Chesham knocked a Football League team out of the FA Cup for the first time, beating Bristol Rovers 1-0 on their own ground in the first round proper. This led to a trip to Bradford City's Valley Parade ground in the second round, when two late goals gave the home team a flattering 4-0 win. In 2016/17 Chesham again reached the FA Cup first round proper, losing 2-1 to Peterborough United at London Road. This resulted in a fixture backlog which led to the club finishing 11th in the league for the third season running. 2017/18 saw Jon Meakes take charge of the team after a decade as assistant to Andy Leese. A new-look squad took time to settle, but a strong run saw the team briefly threaten the play-off places before finishing a creditable eighth.

32 HARTLEY WINTNEY JUNIOR FC Junior Football Club Update The Juniors have enjoyed a great start to the season, from U7s all the way up to our Youth team. We are, and have been for a number of years, an FA Charter Standard club - this season we are looking to go one stage further and, for the very first time, achieve the next grade of FA Charter Standard Development Club. At U7 level we have gone from two to three teams - this is fantastic news as it really gives the club a solid base moving forward. And in being able to do this there's a big shout out needed to all of the U7 coaching staff - Ollie S, Steve C, Craig M, and Dean B. Not only have they given up time to manage the teams, but they have also been busy doing their FA Level 1 Coaching badges. Results are not published in development football - that's the U7 to U11 - but they are just starting a first set of Tournaments and we're hoping to bring exciting news as these tournaments progress to their finals. In the U12 to Youth age groups, we entered a team into the Hampshire Cup at every age group this year - there's no better way to see how our teams shape up against the best teams in the County. Going into the third round stage - with matches to be played next Saturday, 8th December - we have the U12 Hawks as our sole remaining representatives. They play a Basingstoke Town team and we wish the U12 Hawks all the very best of luck. 34 THE PAPERS SAID: BASINGSTOKE TOWN Basingstoke Town v Hartley Wintney, Evo-Stik League South, Premier South. Tuesday 27th November 2018 Report by David Graham Hartley Wintney made the short journey to Basingstoke looking for a first win since late September '18 in the league. For Basingstoke Town this was the first local league derby since Easter 1971 when they played Thorneycrofts. Initial play was scrappy but the game came to life on 5 minutes with a goal from Hartley. Loose defensive play around the right side of the 'stoke penalty box saw Romario Hart gain possession and he scored with a low shot past Colm McAdden in the Basingstoke goal. (0-1) Basingstoke responded well and good interpassing in midfield gave Ben Wright a chance, which he fired over from the edge of the box. A minute later the Row defence were all at sea when a long clearance found Sam Argent in the clear, with a one-on-one with Row 'keeper, Adam Desbois. The young Hartley keeper pulled off a good save from Argent's shot. In another minute play moved to the other end and a fluent move down the left ended with a Nic Ciardini shot being deflected over the bar. Chances were coming thick and fast. Just a minute later, Sam Argent made good progress down the right and his cross saw Ben Wright's effort blocked. Then it was Hartley's turn. A long free kick from Josh Webb almost found the head of Jack Ball as the ball just eluded the back post. 34 On seventeen minutes, a crisp move by Hartley culminated in a good cross from Louie Paget which Nic Ciardini just missed at the back post. Ross Cook was soon to come on for Ciardini, who picked up an injury. Basingstoke pulled level on 29 minutes. They gained possession on the left and a clever turn from Ben Wright gave himself a shooting chance. Desbois managed to parry the shot but the ball spun across the goal and Sam Deadfield managed to squeeze his shot home at the back post. (1-1) It almost got better for 'stoke a minute later when a good build up saw Jack McKnight fire in a shot which went just over the crossbar. The Row managed to get an edge in the latter part of the half but without creating a clear opening. However, on 44 minutes a good move down the left involving several players gave Rowan Vine a chance, which he fired wildly over. HT: BASINGSTOKE 1 HARTLEY 1 The 'stoke started the half on the front foot and some good play on the right saw a cross which enabled Ben Wright and Jack McKnight to combine to set up Sam Argent. Desbois was quickly off his line and just managed to deflect the former Row striker's effort wide. The Row started to take a firm grip on the game and it was no surprise when they took the lead on 58 minutes. 'Stoke had chances to clear but a miscue gave the Row the chance and Ross Cook turned and fired home. (1-2)

35 THE PAPERS SAID: BASINGSTOKE TOWN Four minutes later, the dangerous Cook almost added another but fired wide after a good Hartley move. Basingstoke came into the game approaching the mid point of the second half and, on 66 minutes, a corner from McKnight saw a header pushed over by Desbois. On 76 minutes, after being on top for a spell, the Row clinched the match with an excellent goal. Good play down the right saw a cross field ball to Louie Paget. The young defender took aim and fired in an unstoppable shot from around 25 yards. (1-3) Basingstoke finished strongly and a dangerous corner resulted in an effort from Argent which was blocked. The final whistle confirmed a deserved win for the Row after a sparkling performance. Basingstoke were good in parts - especially in midfield - but overall seemed to struggle with the desire of the villagers. [D Graham] FT: BASINGSTOKE 1 HARTLEY 3 BASINGSTOKE TOWN: Colm McAdden, Zidan Akers, Robert Gerrard, Charlie Kennedy, Harry Philby, Dan Baylis, Dean Stow, Jack McKnight, Sam Argent, Sam Deadfield, Ben Wright. Subs: Shane Hollamby, Mitchell Parker, Jim Orvis, Liam Hunt, Cameron Kennedy. HARTLEY WINTNEY: Adam Desbois, Jacques Kpohomouh, Louie Paget, Jack Ball, Nathan Smart, Jack French, Romario Hart, Josh Webb, Rowan Vine, Nic Ciardini, Marley Ridge. 35 Subs: Tyron Smith, Steven Duff, Steve Noakes, Ross Cook, Michael Campbell. After the game, David spoke with Hartley Wintney's joint first team manager, Dan Turkington. "We are delighted and really proud of our team. They had a clear plan and they executed it well. It's always good to win a local derby and the entire team, plus substitutes, played well, with a good, crafted display. "I was also delighted that Romario Hart got his first goal for the club; he looked threatening all night. And Louie Paget will rarely hit a shot as good as that one for the third goal. All in all a great night for the Row." Anthony Millerick later added: It was a fantastic result for us and we need to take this momentum forward now. Full steam ahead for the Chesham game - same attitude, same work rate and same desire. If we do that we ll continue to get good results.
